Chapter 4: Mourning a friend and Operation Easter

The remaining three guardians held a little ceremony in Sandy's honor after informing her of her guardian status. The elves and yetis joined in as well, and although no one said anything, they all knew what the other was thinking: Sandy will be missed greatly and that his memories will live on in their hearts. Hailey watched from a wooden beam up in the ceiling her arms wrapped up in bandages as well as her legs. She was reflecting on her thoughts the nightmares pitch had planted in her head didn't help either, but nothing hurt more than Sandy's death. she looked over at the others taking in the atmosphere she wiped her eyes and looked at jack who looked more depressed than herself and the others…. she knew she had to do something…. anything to snap him out of it… he would have done the same for her.

After it was over she floated over where Jack was. Using his frost powers, he drew a small slightly cartoonish picture of Sandy on the window. She knew that Sandy's demise affected him the most, seeing as he was pretty close to the dream spirit.

Hailey quietly sat herself next to him watching over him, he seemed as if he was deep in thought like she was earlier, since he didn't notice that she was even there until she gently and soothingly wrapped her arms around his waist and laid her head on his shoulder.

"Hm?" he mumbled/asked.

"I miss him too Jack. I'm sorry." Jack placed a hand over both of her's hearing her sniffle slightly.

"It wasn't your fault Hails."

"It wasn't yours either Jack." Jack sighed as he wiped her eyes.

"Hailey listen, I don't want you fighting with us." Hailey unwrapped her arms from his body and sat up.

"What are you saying, I am a Guardian too Jack?" Jack turned around, now facing her. "Please tell me why?"

"You should go help the kids, it would better for you to be there then here fighting pitch trapped you and hurt you last time." Jack slightly ranted looking at her bandages.

"Jack, I want to help, Pitch needs to pay for what he did to Sandy and he needs to be stopped." she replied firmly but with a soft tone.

"I thought I lost you….." He told her what happened at Tooth's Palace where He had her tiara twirling around his finger.

"Jack, I'm fine and I can handle myself I am not weak." Jack surprised Hailey by wrapping his arms around her and holding her close to him as she felt more tears run down her cheeks.

"J-J-Jack?" she stuttered

"And I can't risk losing you either or again," he said, burying his face in her shoulder, "you were the first person to ever see me and put up with me for three hundred years we've known each other Hailey, you honestly have no idea how happy I was the night that we met." Hailey's heart pounded hard against her rib cage, slowly she wrapped her arms around him returned Jack's hug with one of her own. "I was happy too Jack."

They held each other like that for a while, they later let go of each other. Jack pulled out and set Hailey's bronze tiara back in between her fuzzy ears he looked her in her eyes and spoke.

"And even though it was reckless, thank you for Trying protecting me while in that Cage earlier, seeing you risk yourself like that for me, I think that's what brought that spark out of me, I wanted nothing but to save and keep you from getting hurt, trapped or worse."

"Oh you're welcome, I guess you're not the only one who can be reckless, huh Jack?" he chuckled warmly at her comment while she grinned cutely but looked down rubbing the back of her neck, "Although I have to admit it was a really stupid move."

"Stupid," Jack reached out, brushing her hair out of her face to get a good look at her eyes, giving her a smile, "But it was brave." Hailey blushed pure red uncontrollably, Jack's hand traveled down past her cheek down to her chin lifting it gently to get a better look in her eyes. They both gazed into each other's eyes loving way. Before Hailey's mind could register it for her, he was slowly leaning his face closer to hers.

'I-Is he going to!?' Hailey saw Jack close his eyes as his face inched closer to hers. H-he is! OH MY GOD' Swallowing nervously, Hailey slowly closed her eyes slowly moving closer as Jack's lips were only mere centimeters away from touching hers . . . .

"Ahem!" Jack quickly pulled away as North's voice, facing the window to hide his blush.

"Um . . . h-hi North," Hailey said her face pure red as she looked the other way.

"Hello. Jack, are you alright?" Feeling that his face has gone back to normal, Jack looked at North as he answered, "I just uh . . . I wish I could've done something."

"Done something? Jack, you stood up to Pitch, you saved us all."

"But Sandy-" Jack started.

"Would be proud of what you did," North finished. Jack pulled back his hood and stood up, digging his hands into his hoodie's pocket.

"I don't know who you were in your past life, but in this life, you are guardian," North looked down at Hailey who was still sitting next to the window and close to Jack, "Same goes for you nemnogo osen' tsvetok (1)."

"But, how can we know who we are until we find out who we were?" Jack asked looking at North with a look of curiosity.

"You will. I feel it, in my belly," North said, patting his large belly making it wiggle a bit. Hailey let out a small giggle in amusement while Jack just smiled.

They walked back to where everyone was, but then noticed something going on with the globe. The lights were going out at an alarming rate!

"Look how fast they're going out!" Tooth said with a look of worry on her face.

Jack flew up next to the globe, "its fear . . ."

"Hey, buck up you sad sacks," Bunny said, hopping in front of everyone, "we can still turn this around. Easter is tomorrow, and I need your help. I say we pull out all the stuffs, and we get those lights flickering again. Everyone! Follow me!" They all followed North to the elevator.

"Bunny's right! As much as it pains me to say it old friend, this time Easter is," he kicked the door open, "more important than Christmas." Bunny had shock written all over his face.

"Hey! Did everyone hear that!?" Bunny asked in Disbelief and Excitement.

"Yeah Bunny we did." Hailey replied with a small smile. "He finally acknowledged your hard work."

"We must hurry to the Warren. Everyone, to the sleigh!" North shouted.

"Really?! We're going on the sleigh?!" Hailey asked with a bright look in her eyes.

"Oh no mate," Bunny said hopping in front of everybody, "My Warren, my rules. Buckle up." He tapped the floor twice and a hole big enough for all of them opened up while a smirk played on his lips.

North said something in Russian that Hailey didn't understand before everyone fell in. She let her wind steady herself as she slid next to Jack and laughing while doing that he pulled her up on to her feet and held her hand as they slid on their feet down the tunnel.

They all eventually made it to Bunny's Warren. North landed on his back, and he chuckled sarcastically, "Haha, 'buckle up,' is very funny."

"Welcome to the Warren!" Bunny greeted but his happy Demeanor fell very quickly. "Something's up," he added looking into one of his tunnel's exits.

A sound was heard on the wind, it sounded like screeching. Bunny drew his boomerang, North his twin blades, Tooth's wings flapped harder, Jack held his staff at the ready, and Hailey brought up some vines to protect them all. Everyone let out a war cry and charged. Out came Sophie holding some unpainted eggs. She looked up at them with surprise in her eyes.

"Sophie?" Jack and Hailey asked confused.

Everyone chuckled nervously as they backed down and put their weapons away. She noticed the elf that had come with them and dropped the eggs, giving it chase.

"Elf!" she cried happily and giggling as she chased it.

"What is she doing here!?" Bunny asked no one in particular feeling very dumbfounded with the fact that Sophie found a way into his Warren in the first place.

North patted himself down, realizing that his snow globe that opened portals wasn't with him he looked nervous. "Ah, snow globe…."

"Cricky! Someone do something!" Bunny Snapped looking at Jack and Hailey.

"Don't look at us," Jack said with Hailey beside him, speaking for the both of them and waving his hands in form of him, "We're invisible, remember?"

"Sorry Bunny." Hailey apologized.

Sophie managed to catch the elf and was now dragging it around by its' hat while she giggled, which it wasn't enjoying it at all.

"Don't worry bunny," Tooth said, flying around Sophie, catching her attention, "I bet she's a fairy fan." She struck a pose and with a motherly tone stated. "It's ok little one."

"Pretty," Sophie commented her eyes sparkling with amazement as she looked at Tooth.

"Oooh, you know what? I got something for you." Tooth cupped her hand together then unraveled them, "here it is." It was teeth, "Look at all the pretty teeth! With little blood and gum on them." Sophie looked at her, then cried out screaming and crying, running away.

Jack walked by Tooth, "Blood and gums?" he asked, chuckling which earned him an elbow to his side from Hailey as she floated to keep Sophie from hurting herself. He flew and sat on top of an egg column, "When was the last time you guys actually hung out with kids?"

"We are very busy bringing joy to children! We don't have time-" Sophie laughed cutely as she ran by the three guardians, chasing some butterflies and catching North's attention for a second, "for children . . . ." North then realized that didn't sound right for even a second.

"If one little kid can ruin Easter," Jack said, twirling a snowflake he created around his hand, "you're in worse shape than I thought." The snowflake floated from Jack's hand and glided over to Bunny, hitting him on the nose.

Bunny blinked a few times before a smile appeared on his face. He led Sophie to a flower that was closed and just about to open. When it did, a plain, white egg hopped off it with two little legs.

"Wanna make some eggs? Yeah?" Bunny asked Sophie in a way that a father would speak to his daughter when they played.

"Okay!" Sophie cheered. In no time, there what appeared to be a huge army of eggs walking around, getting ready to be painted. Hailey watched them from a high rock while painting a few of the eggs herself.

"That's a lot of eggs," she said.

"Uhh, how much time do we have?" Jack asked, perched on his staff. His question remained unanswered.

Bunny got Sophie on his back and gave her a ride around the unpainted eggs that were passing by some Lilies of the Valley. The flowers suddenly shot out color, painting the eggs with a base color which ranged from green, blue, purple, yellow, all the colors that would represent spring. Hailey eyed the flowers and looked back at Jack, a silly smirk appearing on her face.

Hailey turned and quietly snuck up to jack holding a few the lilies over his head before she made them poof out a variety of colors poofing on to his head changing the color of hit hair from white to a Rainbow.

"Whoa!" He looked back, seeing Hailey holding some flowers and Hailey giggling. "Oh god what did you do now?"

She continued to giggle before she started laughing her butt off.

"Hey! What's gotten into you!?" he asked with confusion laced in his voice.

"J-J-Jack! You-your hair!" Hailey squeaked between laughs.

"Huh? What about it?" He looked up and only saw the tips of his bangs.

Curious about why it was causing her to laugh so much he looked in to some clean water seeing the prank Hailey had pulled on him.

"Very funny," Jack said as he cleaned his hair.

He then noticed a running river in the color shining purple. The eggs jumped in and came out in beautiful, shining multicolor, the same happened to the elf who was pushed in by the marching eggs, although he seemed to enjoy the fact that he was very colorful.

Jack Smirked as he walked over to Hailey and grabbed her lifting her over his head.

"Jack! Hey! Put me down!" she Squealed.

"Nope! I get my revenge first!" he laughed.

Wait wha-!" Jack dropped her into the river and stood by the edge, ready to see the results.

A few moments passed and Hailey stood up in of the river climbing out covered in a shimmering colors, her ears perked up as she heard Jack laughing.

"Jack, you didn't have to dunk me into the ri-" she saw her arm, which was in many different colors. Her eyes widened and she gave jack a dirty look.

"Oh man! Where's a camera when you need it!?" Hailey was now covered in every color of spring, from her hair, to her dress, to her limbs.

"Jack Frost!" Hailey Flew out and grabbed Jack by the collar of his hoodie. "Your turn!"

"What!? Ahhh!" With a strong tug, Hailey pulled Jack into the river with her, not that it mattered since she was already colorful. Both spirits pulled themselves up onto the bank of the river. Jack examined himself, he was now colorful like Hailey.

"Oi you two!" Bunny shouted. "Stop goofing around!"

"Sorry Bunnymund!" Hailey replied as Jack and she followed Bunny who led Sophie to the egg tunnels where all the eggs go to be brought out into the world. The place was surrounded by lilacs and trees. They all watched as the eggs walked through the tunnels, ready for Easter.

"Wow, they're all beautiful," Hailey said with joy, sitting to the left of Bunny.

"Not bad," Jack agreed, squatting down to Bunny's right. Sophie was in Bunny's arms, slowly falling asleep from all the excitement she had.

"Not bad yourself," Bunny said back at Jack.

"Look, I'm sorry about the whole . . . you know, the 'kangaroo' thing," Jack apologized.

"It's the accident, isn't it?" Bunny asked. Jack chuckled. Bunny then looked down at Sophie, who was very close to sleep. North and Tooth soon came by.

"Aw poor little ankle-biter, look at her, all tuckered out."

"I love her," Tooth said lovingly. Sophie sighed sleepily before sleep

Overtook her, "I think it's time to get her home." Tooth began to take Sophie into her arms.

"How bout I take her home?" Jack offered.

"Jack no. Pitch is-"

"No match for this," Jack interrupted, holding out his staff.

"Which is why we need you here with us," Bunny said.

"Trust me, I'll be quick as a bunny."

"Well, ok," Tooth handed Sophie to Jack.

"What if I go with Jack?" Hailey asked.

"Hailey you're the last person we want out there in the open. Who knows what Pitch will do to ya he gets his hands on you again," Bunny said, resting his paw on her shoulder. Hailey touched his paw gently, "Don't worry, I'll be fine. I trust Jack with my life and I will make sure pitch will not lay a finger on me."

"Well, ok then," Bunny eyed Jack dangerously, "you better take care of her mate."

"Sure thing!" Jack said, unaffected by Bunny's dangerous stare. Baby Tooth flew around the two, indicating that she wanted to come along as well.

Hailey smiled and nodded as Baby tooth flew close to them.

"Well, the more the merrier as they say."
