Chapter 28
Deeks never thought he'd be as relieved as he was when Kensi returned to work. Part of him had enjoyed knowing she wasn't in any danger at home after being shot. The other part of him worried about what she would get up to while she was supposed to be in bed resting; his Kick-Ass Kensi was known for many things -sitting at home and resting was not one of them.
But as he walked through the tunnel with Kensi by his side, going on about how they could've been earlier if he would just drive faster, Deeks realized just how much he had missed her at work. Missed her being next to him.
There had been an uneasy feeling with Kensi by his side; Deeks had been anxious and more withdrawn without her. He'd be going about his day quietly, and then she'd send him a text or he'd pull up her picture on his phone and the uneasy feeling would leave.
And when he got home and she was waiting there for him every drop of anxiety Deeks had been feeling through the day would vanish-replaced instead by that warm, comfortable feeling he got from being with Kensi.
Deeks had sat at his desk without consciously realizing it; he'd been basking in Kensi' poorly hidden happiness and excitement of being back at OSP. She tried to act like she was all irritated about his driving -and maybe even irritated at him in general, Deeks thought with a smirk- but Deeks could tell Kensi was happy.
He was happy.
"Deeks, would you please stop giving Kensi googly-heart eyes?" Sam interrupted Kensi's rant, glaring teasingly at Deeks.
The female agent looked over at him, surprised; she'd been so absorbed in her rant she hadn't noticed the adoring way Deeks was currently looking at her.
"Yea, Deeks, you're grossing me out." Callen commented.
"I don't need or want to see your I-wanna-kiss-you face." Sam grinned.
Leo looked up from his superhero toys. "Ewww." He said, scrunching his nose up cutely.
With his head propped up and a smirk on his face, Deeks looked at his son with an eyebrow raised. "Hey now, you're on my team, little man."
Leo giggled. "Oh yeah, sowwy Daddy."
Deeks shot him a wink and turned back to the adults. "Now, back to you all. I don't stop you and Callen from your level four bromance-married-ness. All I'm doing is sitting here quietly." The shaggy man smiled.
"Whilst staring." Callen commented.
"At me." Kensi smiled.
"Lovingly." Sam teased.
"Adoringly." Callen added.
"You're like the stupid princes in the Disney movies." Sam chuckled.
"What I'm hearing is that I am a Disney prince; handsome, loved by all, and most important gets the girl." Deeks grinned.
"Oh gosh, he'll never let that go. I'll hear about that for weeks." Kensi groaned, but hiding a smile.
"Hey, you live with him." Callen shrugged simply.
Sam's eyebrows rose. "Still?" He inquired.
"Yup." The female agent replied as she took a sip of coffee.
"Wait, what do you mean still?" Deeks stuttered.
Suddenly Eric's whistle broke through the conversation. "Mistress Hetty demands your presence at once!" He exclaimed in a poor accent.
"I can't believe you can still put up with him, Kens." Sam chuckled as they rose from their chairs.
"You couldn't pay me enough to live with him." Callen said teasingly.
"Yeah, hey guys I'm still right here." Deeks deadpanned.
"Well G, that's because you don't actually buy anything. Hence your empty house! Which I'm sure Kensi would probably trade for." The SEAL laughed as they walked up the stairs, Kensi right behind.
The shaggy man scratched his neck and turned to his son. "Leo, stay right there, okay? Don't get into trouble." He told him.
"Otay, Daddy!" Leo replied happily.
Deeks quickly made his way up the stairs, only to find Kensi standing there, following him with her eyes.
He arched an eyebrow at her and chuckled. "What?" Deeks inquired.
"You're just going to leave Leo there? Deeks what if he wanders off and gets into something? Finds a file with pictures of dead bodies or something!" Kensi demanded.
Deeks smirked. "Well then I guess I'll have to tell him that those aren't really pictures of dead bodies; just people pretending."
Kensi looked horrified. "Deeks!" She exclaimed.
The man snorted in response. "Oh please, Fern, give me some credit. I've got two people down there with instructions to watch him."
Her face relaxed and she switched on her feet. "Oh..."
Deeks chuckled half-heartedly and stuffed his hands in his pockets. "You guys were just playin', right?" He asked suddenly.
Kensi seemed surprised. "Yeah, Deeks. Of course we were! Don't worry." She smiled, grabbing his arm and dragging him into OPS.
Since Mr. Jason was unavailable for babysitting services that day, Leo was stuck at his daddy's office-place. Not that he minded that much, his daddy's office-place had lots of stuff to look at, a tiny lady that talked funny and had even funnier stuff to drink, plus it had his daddy and his Kens!
Not to mention his Nelly was also here.
She smelled so pretty, and she was just pretty! Leo thought. Her hair looked like fire; Leo had once asked his daddy if her head was on fire, because he was really sure that would not be good for his Nelly.
His daddy had laughed and told him her hair was just that color. He'd then said something about Velma. Leo wasn't sure why his daddy had said that, his Nelly was way cooler and prettier than that girlie on TV.
As Leo sat playing with his toys, looking around, he noticed Ms. Hetty had some flowers on her desk. His daddy had brought his Kensi some flowers the other day and Kensi had been so smiley she'd given his daddy a kiss.
Would Nelly give Leo a kiss too if he gave her some flowers? She's been really happy the first he had given her a flower, and he'd gotten a hug. Would she give him a kiss too this time? The thought sent a giggle through Leo and he decided he really had to see if she would.
Leo gently placed his Batman on the floor before tossing Superman next to it- one did not simply mistreat Batman. Then he took off running towards Ms. Hetty's desk.
Suddenly, two arms lifted Leo off his feet, putting a stop to his pursuit of the flowers and making his Nelly be all smiley. He released a shriek of terror at this unexpected development.
"No, no, Leo." An unfamiliar lady said in that really annoying voice grown-ups used when talking to kids.
"What is you doin?!" Leo exclaimed, attempting to wiggle away from this lady; however she just held him tighter and carried him back to his toys, and away from Nelly's flowers.
"Your daddy wants to be a good boy and stay right here, Leo." She told him.
Leo remembered people told Monty he was a good boy when he did something they wanted. It puzzled him why grown-ups talked to him and Monty the same way.
"But dah fwowers!" Leo told her, as if that should explain everything.
"Just play here." She told him, giving Leo a smile he didn't like. This lady wasn't pretty like Nelly and Kens.
As she walked off, Leo huffed. He may have to try a different way.
Leo was a genius, he decided. Like that boy on that TV show, Jimmy New...something. Leo wasn't sure what his name is. But he did know that he was a genius for this idea.
Leo had found a blanket on the couch by his daddy's desk, and had placed it over his little body. Now on one could see him! After he'd bumped into a few walls and fell over once, Leo was sure he had the hang of it.
He started walking in the direction he was sure would take him to the flowers. He giggled as he walked, until he bumped into yet another object. This one wasn't as hard as the wall, however.
"Leo." A man's voice said.
"Nuh-uh." Leo responded.
"I know you're under there." The man told him.
What? How could he possibly know it was him! This blanket completely covered Leo!
Suddenly the blanket was gone and a man shorter than his daddy stood in front of him." Leo, you're supposed to stay over there." He told him.
"But I not wanna! I gots stuff to do!" Leo exclaimed.
"So do I." The man replied, grabbing his hand and taking Leo back to his area.
Leo sat with his arms crossed and his lips pouting. He stared at the flowers on the desk; they just sat there, making fun of him. His Nelly would love him forever and ever if Leo gave her those flowers. But all these grown-ups in this place were teamed up against him, Leo just knew it.
Leo decided that one more try would get him the flowers; so he very carefully planned it all out. This time it had to work.
He'd brought his big fire truck -the one that rolled really well and made noise and had lights; his daddy had bought it for him and they often played with it, even though Kensi didn't like the noise.
Leo took his fire truck, turned the lights and noises on, and with all his might he shoved the truck in the opposite direction of the flowers. The lady and man who'd foiled his other plans jumped up and raced after it, thinking he'd gone with the truck.
He grinned and quickly ran to the flowers; victory was his! No one could stop him now! Leo made it all the way to the office, but just as he reached for it two familiar arms lifted him up.
"Whoa there, little man!" His daddy exclaimed, throwing him over his shoulder.
Leo groaned in despair. "Daddy, nooooo!"
Deeks lowered Leo down and set him on top of his own feet, taking his hands and walking the boy around in a circle. "What are you doing, little man? We've talked about Ms. Hetty's office, you're supposed to stay away unless she tells you otherwise, remember?" The man told the boy.
"But Daddy dah fwowers." Leo whined sadly.
Deeks arched an eyebrow at him before glancing at the vase on Hetty's desk. "What about them?"
"I need dem! To gibe to Nelly!" Leo told him very seriously.
His daddy burst out laughing. "Oh, little man. Like father like son." Deeks smiled, picking Leo into his arms and walking off.
"Aww…" Leo sighed sadly, wrapping his arms around his daddy's neck.
Maybe Leo was not as big of a genius as he thought.
"Well, Ms. Hetty does not take kindly to people taking her things. So how about we grab one of the flowers by the fountain outside and give to Nell?" Deeks suggested.
Leo perked up immediately. "Weally?" He asked excitedly.
His daddy laughed again. "Yea, buddy. Really."
Deeks watched as Leo ran up to Nell in OPS with a bright red flower.
"Nelly I got dis fo' you!" Leo said excitedly.
Nell turned away from her computer and a smile broke out across her face. "Aww! Thank you Leo! You are so sweet!" She cooed.
Kensi appeared by Deeks and snorted. "He's starting early." She laughed.
"Ah, he's got a crush. What can you do?" The shaggy man shrugged.
Nell accepted the flower and kissed Leo on the cheek. The boy immediately broke out in giggles and his face turned red.
"She is completely eating out of her hands." Kensi said, surprised.
"Well he did give her a flower." Deeks smiled at her.
"Well he is three and completely adorable." Kensi shot back.
"And he gave her a flower. Those tend to make the ladies happy." The man smirked.
"Mhm." Kensi snorted.
"What, you don't think so? Because just this week I gave you flowers and I got a kiss." He grinned.
"Well that was different." She objected.
"Oh is it?" Deeks challenged playfully.
"Yup." Kensi nodded.
"So if I gave you a flower right now you completely wouldn't get all mushy and have a great big smile on your face?" Deeks clarified.
"Nope. I would totally keep my composure." Kensi replied confidently.
"Let's test that then, shall we" Deeks said cheekily, pulling a blue flower from behind his back and extending it towards her.
Kensi's eyes lit up in surprise and a smile started to grow on her face. "Huh, it that a smile I see, Blye?" Deeks asked softly, stepping closer to her.
Her eyes narrowed slightly. "That one's for me?" She asked.
"It is. Found it while Leo was searching for a red one to give to Nell. It reminded me of my beautiful, badass Blye." Deeks replied, still using that soft tone.
Kensi's yes softened as she accepted the flower. "Thank you, Deeks." She said before turning and walking out of OPS.
"Wait, no kiss?" Deeks yelled after her, smiling ear to ear. He knew she wanted to kiss him; that's why she was running out.
"Not this time, Shaggy!" Kensi shot a smile at him over her shoulder.
Since bringing a small child to investigate murder is typically frowned upon, Deeks and Kensi were stuck at OSP looking through files and any new evidence Callen and Sam found out in the field.
The senior agents caught the bad guy of the day and returned to OSP late in the evening. The younger partners were antsy from sitting around all day and were eager to leave.
"It's not like you two actually did any of the heavy lifting." Sam teased as they all got ready to head out.
"Hey! We are the ones who figured out where the dude would be next!" Deeks objected.
"Ah, details." Callen chuckled.
Sam's phone rang and he quickly pulled it out of his pocket. "Hey Michelle! Yea, I'll be home for dinner. Yes. I'll be there soon… ye-no I don't know exactly when. Y-Michelle… Michelle yes baby, I know you work hard on dinner." Sam rolled his eyes, making the rest of the team laugh. "Baby I'm leaving right now, bye." He finished, finally hanging up.
"I'm gonna tell her you rolled your eyes at her." Callen grinned mischievously.
Sam's eyes widened a bit. "G…G we're friends. Partners. I've killed people for you, man."
Callen calmly put his bag over his shoulder and walked towards the door. "Michelle always likes to talk to me too. I'm sure she'll be glad to hear what I've to say." He added over his shoulder.
Sam looked at the two younger agents and ran out, yelling at Callen about Bro-Code.
"So!" Deeks exclaimed, drawing Kensi's attention. "I think we should celebrate your first day back." He announced.
"Oh? How so?" Kensi inquired, leaning against her desk.
"Dinner. You, and me-"
"And me!" Leo interrupted excitedly.
"Of course, little man. And Leo. Together. I think dinner for three sounds good." Deeks said happily, running a hand through Leo's hair.
"Or maybe you just don't wanna cook tonight." She teased.
The shaggy man couldn't help but laugh. "Or, maybe I wanna have a nice night out with my two favorite people." He smiled softly.
"Okay, sounds good." Kensi smiled.
"Can we habe Mac-nonalds?" Leo asked.
"Leo we've had McDonalds three times this week!" Kensi laughed.
"He just wants the Batman toys that are currently in the Happy Meals." Deeks informed her, laughing as well.
"Nuh uh." Leo giggled.
"Yeah-huh!" Deeks exclaimed, picking the boy up and tossing him in the air while Kensi told him to be careful, but still laughed.
For once, Kensi and Deeks successfully outvoted Leo and talked him into going to the beach and eating food from the stands at the boardwalk.
There was a lot going on at the boardwalk; merchants and food stands and street performers lined the walkway. Leo's attention was being commanded by two dancers in completely outrageous costumes.
Kensi had made some comment and Deeks was laughing, tugging her closer to him. Their hands were linked but for him she couldn't be close enough. The two were enjoying the atmosphere and Leo's excitement, until Deeks completely froze.
Kensi's head snapped towards him, concerned with the sudden change in him. "Deeks? Deeks what's wrong?" She asked.
"Rachel?" Deeks whispered, looking at the woman walking straight towards them purposely.
my bro demanded Rachel. that's all I've heard about since the first few chapters. he should be happy XD
what about you? Are you happy with this chapter? Lemme know! i'd love to hear your lovely thoughts :]
