Chapter 31

Saturday -given no case needed immediate attention- was a good day for the small family. Breakfast was cooked, cartoons were watched, no one rushed to get somewhere, and the day was theirs for the taking. Deeks loved Saturdays with his family. Especially warm, sunny days with perfect waves for surfing. A quick look at the weather, and shaggy surfer could not ignore the strong call to be in the ocean.

He practically ran into Leo's room where the boy and Kensi were hanging out. "Who's up for a beach day?" Deeks inquired.

"Nooo!" Leo frowned, looking sad.

Deeks's heart immediately dropped. "Well that wasn't the reaction I was looking for…"

"Oh. Deeks, Leo and I were just talking about how great today would be for going to the park. I told him we could go!" Kensi grimaced.

"Well we can go to the park!" Deeks insisted. "Who needs the beach?" He jokes it off.

"Yay!" Leo exclaimed before turning his attention back to his toys.

"Sounds good." Deeks smiled before ducking out of the room and headed to the master bedroom. Kensi followed right behind him.

"Hey, Deeks I'm sorry." She apologized, leaning against the bedroom door. She watched as he put the wet suit he'd already gotten from the closet back up.

"Oh, Kens it's alright! I'm flexible, whatever Leo wants I'm okay with!" The man smiled at her.

"I could tell you really want to go to the beach though." Kensi said softly.

Deeks looked at her fondly. "I want Leo to be happy, and I don't mind if I don't get to go to the beach if it makes him happy."

"Well I want you to be happy. You've been so amazing after the whole Rachel drama, and made sure Leo, and me too, were both okay. Maybe you should you just take a day to yourself. Go surf." Kensi insisted.

The man shifted on his feet and shoved his hands in his pockets; Kensi could see that he wanted to take her up on the offer. "Yeah, no, I can't." Deeks shook his head.

Kensi walked over to him and placed her hands on his shoulders, shaking lightly. "Deeks, you are an amazing father, an amazing boyfriend, and an amazing agent. You deserve to take a break today." She told him softly, but firmly.

Her partner smiled at her and his eyes sparkled. "You sure you don't mind?" He asked hopefully.

"Of course not!" Kensi smirked, knowing she'd won.

Deeks wrapped his arms around her and kissed her lips. "I love you." He told her. Kensi grinned.

"Leo and I will have a great time at the park, and you have the whole day to yourself. Enjoy it." She told him.

Nothing cleared Deeks's mind like being in the ocean; the sun beaming down on his skin, the smell of salt in the air, the waves beneath his board. For the first time in the month after Rachel left town, Deeks relaxed. He'd been worried about how Leo would do after his biological mother showed up and disappeared in such a short span. He'd worried about how Kensi would deal with having such horrible thoughts shoved in her face. Not once had Deeks stopped to process how he himself was doing.

Now that he thought about it, Deeks realized that dealing with a Rachel episode was different. There was a sense of finality that had never been there before. Deeks felt for the first time in his life that the whole charade with Rachel was, finally, over; it was time to move on with his life, and his family.

The thought filled him with peace; he so badly wanted a life with Kensi and Leo, and moving forward with that was exciting for Deeks. He knew what he wanted: to get married to Kensi, to get a bigger place with her, and maybe someday have another child. The last thought tugged at his heart the most; he and Kensi had already talked about marriage, and it seemed so obvious that that would happen one day. And soon if Deeks had his way. But what he wasn't sure about was if Kensi wanted to have a baby with him.

Maybe she just wanted Leo.

If that was the case, Deeks knew he'd be happy with it just being the three of them; he would never push her into something she didn't want. Deeks knew he'd be happy with it just being the three of them; he would never push her into something she didn't want.

He knew they would love their kids equally, and the thought of a little girl with Kensi's curls and maybe his eyes. Someday, he thought, if Kensi wants.

After an hour of running around, pushing swings, and going down slides, Kensi Blye took a seat on the ground at the edge of the playground.

She was not, however, tired. She chased criminals on a daily basis, she could handle a day at the park without getting tired.

Or at least, that was what Kensi was going to tell Deeks.

Leo was having a great time; he hadn't stopped smiling since they'd arrived. Now he was playing in the sandbox, reminding her of his father's love of the sand.

"Has your little one worn you out as well?" A soft voice inquired from behind her.

The agent quickly turned and saw a pregnant woman sitting at a table close to her, one hand resting on her belly.

"Umm… yea, a little bit." Kensi admitted.

The woman smiled, adjusting her red hair into a pony tail. "My son is five, and is full of energy. And then we've got this little one coming soon." She explained.

"Wow… sounds like a lot to handle…" Kensi replied.

"Well, it is and it isn't. I'm nowhere near as stressed as I was for my son. And I know that if I can handle him, I can handle this little girl.

"You're expecting a girl?" Kensi smiled.

The woman's smile grew bigger and brighter. Kensi couldn't help but notice that with that smile, you could hardly see how tired her eyes looked. "Oh yes! My husband is a wreck, too. He's worried about her dating, and getting her period, but I'm just so excited! It'll be so nice to have another girl in the house" She explained.

"I think I'd have a hard time connecting to a girl. I've always been a tomboy and girly things aren't really my style." Kensi found herself admitting.

"See, I thought I'd have that problem with my son. I've always been a girly girl. But you're still their mother, and you'll find something to connect to." The woman explained.

Kensi nodded, deep in thought. "Yeah..."

The woman looked at her watch. "Oh! I didn't realize it was already after lunch! I've got to go meet with the movers to make sure everything is all set! With this little one coming we just had to have more space!"

Kensi stood quickly as the woman went to get up, hovering as she made sure the pregnant woman was okay.

"Thank you, sweetie! It was so nice talking to you!" She smiled.

"You too." Kensi smiled back.

As the woman waddled away, Kensi looked over at Leo, playing quietly by himself. She couldn't stop herself from imagining a small brunette playing with him. Kensi smiled.

That night, Kensi and Deeks lie cuddled up on the couch watching a movie. Leo was in his room playing with Monty, but neither suspected he would be up for much longer; the little boy had almost worn himself completely out at the park, but the constant smile on his face told them it was well worth it.

Deeks lie on his back, Kensi practically on top of him, and was slowly running his fingers through her hair. He loved being with her like this: calm, no pressure, just them. On their little movies nights, the man paid more attention to his partner than to whatever she'd chosen to watch.

As Kensi shifted again, she was constantly moving, Deeks couldn't stop the smile that spread across his face. He felt so lucky to have her. If he listened close enough, Deeks could hear the sound of Leo giggling when Monty barked. He wasn't sure what he'd done to deserve such perfection, but he was thankful he'd done it.

Suddenly the shrill ringing of a phone drew Deeks from his thoughts. "Oh, that's mine." Kensi announced, starting to draw away from him.

"No! Don't leave me, Fern!" Deeks exclaimed dramatically, reaching for her.

Kensi laughed. "Deeks I need to take this call! It might be important!"

"I'm important, Kensalina. Don't you wanna pay attention to me instead of that stupid phone?" He inquired, grinning.

Kensi rolled her eyes, but smiled nonetheless. As she pressed a quick kiss to his lips, she answered her call and quickly scooted away to the living room. "FERN!" Deeks called cheekily, but received no answer.

"KIKI!" He tried again. Kensi poked her head in the kitchen doorway and narrowed her eyes playfully. Deeks shot her a wink and grinned when she rolled her eyes and walked off. Deeks sighed and relaxed back into the couch. The best part was, he knew she was coming straight back into his arms the moment she was done. Perfect. He thought with a smile.

Early the next morning, as the sun had just started to rise, Deeks rolled over, half awake. He expected to be met with dark hair, and Kensi's outstretched body; instead he found only warm sheets.

He immediately sat up and ran a hand over his face. "Kens?" He mumbled sleepily. As he was met with silence, the shaggy man threw the covers off himself and made his way into the rest of the apartment.

Deeks quietly nudged Leo's door open; the little boy was curled up in his covers, sleeping peacefully. The men smiled before pulling the door almost closed.

He found his partner standing in the kitchen, looking out the window. Deeks smiled at the sight; Kensi in one of his t-shirts, bathed in soft light of the morning, standing peacefully with a coffee mug in her hand, lost in thought.

He quietly made his way to her and wrapped his arms around her. Kensi shifted slightly, and a small gasp escaped her. Deeks smiled at bit at her reaction to him.

"You're up early." He commented softly.
"Couldn't sleep, I've been thinking." She replied.

"What about?" Deeks inquired.
"My landlord called last night." Kensi said.

"Is that why you left me all alone on the couch?" He asked jokingly.

"I was only gone for five minutes!" Kensi objected.

"Five lonely-"
"Oh please, Deeks-"
"Cold-"
"We live in LA! It was not cold!"
"Heart wrenching minutes!" Deeks grinned.

Kensi couldn't help but laugh at his antics. "Anyway, my lease is up after next month."

Deeks was quiet for a moment. "You still have the lease? I never even thought of that... well you're not gonna resign are you?" He inquired.

"Well no, but I've been thinking..." Kensi replied, turning to face him. "Maybe we could..." She trailed off.

"We can what?" Deeks asked softly.

"Nell and I were talking about Leo's birthday and I was thinking about a party. But this place may be a little small for a party..."

"Are you... you're saying you wanna move?" Deeks asked, surprised.

Kensi shifted in his arms. "Well...yeah. Sometimes I still catch myself thinking this is your apartment. And we need more space. Plus, I don't like that Rachel could just show up here and start drama." Kensi explained.

"Well I'm pretty sure that was taken care of." Deeks smirked.

Kensi could help but smile. "And I just... I want us to move forward, y'know?"

"Are you ready for that? I mean, yea, no. I know what i want. But I don't want to rush into anything..." Deeks told her.

"I'm not! We're already living together, it'll just be in a different house. One that's ours." Kensi explained.

"Part of you and part of me." Deeks mused quietly.

Kensi tensed a bit and her eyes widened. "I meant a house, not a kid."

Deeks's eyebrows rose. "Umm... well I meant a house. Wha-where you thinking of a baby?" He inquired.

"What? Uh, no!" Kensi lied.

"You were! You totally were." Deeks said softly, almost in awe.

"There was this woman at the park that had a little boy and she was pregnant and it just stuck with me." Kensi explained in a rush.

"There's nothing wrong with thinking about it." Deeks said gently.

"Do you thinking about it?" Kensi inquired.

Deeks's eyes got a soft look, and it took Kensi's breath away. "Yea... yea I do." He admitted.

Kensi was surprised by his answer. "But you know I only want that if you do. I'd never push you into something you're not ready for, or don't want." Deeks added.

She nodded taking in his words. "I don't think I'm ready for that just yet... but I might be someday."

Deeks grinned at her. "I'll wait. As long as it takes." He promised.

Kensi couldn't think of words that would even compare to his, so she kissed him and hugged him close. Deeks didn't need her to say the words, he could feel that she meant them.
