i find it a bit ironic that the last chapter i posted was before hiatus for shows was over, and this chapter is being posted after midseason finales. i didn't plan on that, but i guess that's just the way it worked out! thank you for your continued support, and I hope you haven't given up on me! i don't own NCISLA, but i do hope that you enjoy this chapter!
Chapter 38
Kensi Blye was a badass. No one would argue that fact. She'd chased down criminals and been in more gun fights than she could count. All of this was done with little to no fear, because Kensi didn't get afraid or nervous easily.
Apparently, weddings made Kensi nervous.
Nell had woken the bride and groom to be up early that morning, banging on their apartment door. The redhead was frustrated, but couldn't help smile at the couple as they said goodbye for the day; Nell had drug her away to prepare her for the wedding.
The maid of honor had called it "preparing", the bride had called it "torture".
Kensi had to sit still while her mother and Nell fussed over her makeup, her nails, and her hair; that alone had taken two hours, and Kensi was ready to just pull it all out in frustration. All she wanted was to be married to Deeks; she hated all this primping the other women were making her endure to accomplish that.
Finally after four hours, Kensi had a moment alone; her mother and Nell had left to go check on everything being set up. The bride to be stood on the balcony in the hotel room she was in, breathing slowly to calm her nerves.
The wedding was going to be out on the beach at sunset, with the reception being inside the hotel in one of the ballrooms. Kensi and Deeks both thought that having the actual wedding out on the sand fit them well; their family of three had spent a lot of time out there, and many memories were of out there. Deeks, ever the shaggy surfer, was over the moon about getting married on the beach.
Kensi glanced over her shoulder, looking at her wedding dress laid out on the bed. The dress was perfect; strapless, not too poofy or gaudy, exactly what Kensi had always wanted. An excited smile grew on her face as she finally felt the stress that the other women had created for her vanish.
A knock on the door broke her from her wedding dress trance, and Kensi groaned. Please don't let that be Nell or Mom. She thought silently, moving to open the door. Standing there was Leo, wearing black dress pants, a light blue button down shirt, suspenders, and a grin.
"Hi Mommy." He giggled.
Kensi couldn't help but beam back at the boy. "Leo you look so handsome!" She cooed.
"Oh tanks." Leo laughed again.
"What are you doing here, huh?" Kensi asked.
"Daddy gibe this to you, Mommy." Leo told her, handing her a red rose and an envelope.
The woman's heart melted at the serious look on the little boy's face, and the rose her very soon to be husband sent her. She opened the envelope and saw a card with Deeks's unique scribble on it, and her heart melted even more.
Never thought I'd be lucky enough to be waiting for you at the end of the aisle. I'll be the handsome shaggy one. I love you, Deeks.
"Thank you, Leo." She kissed his cheek, and Leo beamed, obviously proud of himself.
"I wike your dwess, Mommy!" He exclaimed.
Kensi looked down at the white bathrobe she was in and laughed. "No, baby. This isn't my wedding dress, it's just a robe. You want to see my real dress?"
"Oh yeah!" Leo nodded quickly.
Kensi lifted the boy into her arms and shut the door, then took him over to the bed where her dress was. "See? Now this is a wedding dress."
"It still should be bwoo. But it's pwetty too!" Leo said excitedly.
"Thank you! How's your daddy?" Kensi asked.
"He keeps walkin' in a line, I no know why." Leo shook his head, confused.
The woman laughed, she could just see Deeks pacing back and forth with anticipation. "Well, you should probably get back to him, the wedding is going to start soon and I have to finish up." Kensi told him.
"Otay, Mommy." Leo pressed a kiss to her cheek and wiggled out of her arms.
"Did someone walk you up here?" Kensi asked.
Suddenly, there was another knock on the door. She walked over to it and opened it, before she laughed lightly. Standing there now was Deeks, his hand clasped over his eyes and a grin on his face. He wore the exact same outfit as Leo, even the suspenders. Kensi pressed a hand to her mouth, hiding her grin as a swarm of butterflies fluttered in her belly.
"Hi." She whispered.
If possible, his grin grew even bigger. "Hey, baby. I came to get Leo back, was starting to get worried he'd run off. He still in there?" His voice was soft, full of emotion.
"Yeah, he's looking at my wedding dress. Thank you, for the rose and the note." Kensi smiled, cupping his scruffy jaw with her hand.
"What? He gets to look, but I don't!" Deeks chuckled.
"It's pwetty Daddy!" Leo called from inside the room.
The man chuckled again. "Oh, I'm sure it is, Little Man. But I'd bet Mommy is way prettier than the dress." He said softly.
Kensi tugged him closer, his hand falling from his eyes but keeping them closed. He rested his forehead against hers and took a shaky breath. Kensi felt a bit calmer knowing he felt anxious too. She closed her eyes and reveled in the excitement and peace she felt in that moment.
The anticipation was absolutely going to kill him before he even made it to the aisle. Early that morning Nell had stolen Kensi from him, claiming she needed to get ready for her big day. Deeks couldn't help but think that it was their big day. His and Kensi's. Not Nell's. And on his big day, he wanted Kensi to spend the day with him and not with the maid of honor.
Deeks had spent most of the day playing with Leo in the sand, or sitting around the hotel with Callen, Sam, and Eric. While he enjoyed his friends' company, he really just wanted to be around Kensi. He was nervous; what if she changed her mind?
This thought made him pace incessantly. He walked the floor of the hotel room reserved for the men to get showered and dressed in. The others had went off to grab something to eat, or maybe it was something to drink? Deeks couldn't really remember.
"Daddy, why is you walkin' in a line?" Leo finally asked, breaking Deeks from his thoughts.
Deeks laughed nervously, rubbing at his scruff. "Uh, I guess I'm nervous buddy." He admitted.
"Why?" Leo asked.
"Well, today is a really important day, remember? Daddy's gonna marry Mommy." Hopefully. He couldn't help but add silently in his head. "And then we're gonna officially be a family."
"Oh yeah, I 'member now." Leo nodded, before turning back to the toys he'd brought with him.
Deeks went back to pacing. He had to talk to Kensi. He knew he wasn't supposed to see her before the wedding –another stupid tradition- but he just had to talk to her. Know she wasn't going to pull a runaway bride on him. Finally, an idea struck him, and he picked up the hotel phone.
"Front desk." A lady answered.
"Yeah, hi. I'm the groom of the wedding being held today, and I need a favor. I need you to send one of the single red roses being used for the table center pieces, surely they won't miss one. Oh, and a blank card up to my hotel room immediately." Deeks said excitedly.
The woman on the other end seemed to share his excitement. "Oh yes sir, right away! And congratulations."
"Thanks." He replied before hanging up.
Deeks went back to pacing as he waited for his plan to take action. Finally, someone arrived with the rose and card, and Deeks could focus on something other than being nervous.
He thought for a moment about what to say, and quickly wrote it out, sealing the envelope. He glanced over at Leo, who'd begun to look bored. "Hey, Leo. You wanna help Daddy with something?"
The boy immediately perked up. "Oh yeah! What is it, Daddy?" He asked.
"We're gonna take this to Mommy, but I need you to do it, okay?" Deeks explained.
"But Nelly said that we're not s'posed to see Mommy 'till the wedding." Leo tilted his head at his father.
Deeks laughed. "I'm not supposed to, but I'm not going to see her. I'm going to show you where she's hiding, and then you'll give this to her okay? It's gonna make her smile. He told the boy.
Leo loved when Kensi smiled. "Oh, otay then! Let's go!" He said excitedly.
Deeks grinned and the two Deeks boys quickly made their way to the room where the bride and her ladies were getting ready. They turned towards the hallway, but Deeks's eyes widened as he saw Nell and Kensi's mother leaving the room. He quickly tugged Leo back around the corner and turned away from the hall, hiding their faces.
"What are we doin'?" Leo asked.
"Shh, buddy. We gotta be real quite." Deeks whispered. If they got busted sneaking down to see Kensi, Nell would definitely have his head. The only reason she didn't blow up about Deeks and Kensi spending the night together last night was because Kensi was the one that snuck out.
Deeks shuddered to think what the redhead would've done if he'd been the one to break the rule.
"I didn't think we'd ever get her all done up." He heard Nell sigh.
"She is stubborn that one." Kensi's mother laughed lightly.
"Kensi almost hit me when I suggested we try a different hair style! I mean, we only spent an hour on that one, we still have time!" Nell exclaimed.
Deeks bit his lip to keep from laughing; that sounded just like his Kensalina. He was a bit sorry for her mother and Nell for having to go through all that with Kensi. But then again, Nell did steal her away from him this morning, so he didn't feel that bad. He heard the ladies chatting grow farther and farther away as they walked down the hall and away from him and Leo, and knew they were safe.
Leo was covering his mouth, trying to hold in his giggles. "That was silly, Daddy." He told him.
"I know. You ready to see Mommy?" Deeks grinned.
"Yeah!" Leo nodded excitedly.
Deeks hand him the card and the flower, and bent down to his level. "Keep those behind your back when she opens the door okay? Then you surprise her with them. Got it?"
"Got it." Leo replied.
Deeks walked him over to Kensi's door and knocked, before turning and quickly headed back to his hiding spot. He could barely hear Kensi talking softly to him, but he smiled at the thought of her being surprised. Then, he heard the door shut.
Deeks poked his head out and looked around. Leo was nowhere in sight. Did he walk off somewhere? Or did Kensi take him into the room? A moment of panic flew through him, and he finally decided to just knock on the door and check. He pressed a hand over his eyes to keep the tradition in place, but smiled as he heard her open the door.
"Hi." He heard her say softly; her voice was so soothing for his nerves. Deeks's body immediately relaxed at hearing her.
"Hey, baby. I came to get Leo back, was starting to get worried he'd run off. He still in there?" Deeks asked quietly.
"Yeah, he's looking at my wedding dress. Thank you, for the rose and the note." Deeks could hear the smile on her face, and his grew a bit wider. Her voice was filled with emotion, and Deeks was pretty sure his was as well. Suddenly, he felt her hand on his jaw, rubbing against his scruff lightly. Deeks knew she liked it, so he didn't shave it for the wedding.
Her words suddenly clicked in his head and he laughed. "What? He gets to look, but I don't!"
"It's pwetty Daddy!" Leo called from inside the room.
Deeks laughed lightly again. The thought of Kensi in a wedding dress tugged greatly at his heart. "Oh, I'm sure it is, Little Man. But I'd bet Mommy is way prettier than the dress."
He suddenly felt Kensi tugged him closer and he let his hand fall away from his eyes, still keeping them closed. He rested his forehead against hers, and the breath he took was filled with nerves that were still present, even with her comfort. Deeks felt Kensi relax a bit as she pressed her forehead back against his.
The man wrapped his arms around her waist and tugged her just a bit closer. "I'm gonna marry you, Blye." Deeks said softly.
"I look forward to it, Shaggy." Kensi chuckled.
"Well isn't this a cute scene?" Sam's voice broke through their moment.
Deeks jumped a bit, making Sam and Callen laugh. Kensi chuckled lightly, but he could tell it was forced.
"Just be glad that it's not Nell catching you two lovebirds." Callen smirked.
Deeks kept his eyes closed until he turned towards their teammates' voices. "Very funny boys. Interrupt the nice moment between the bride and groom."
Sam snorted. "You're not even supposed to be near this hallway."
The shaggy man shrugged, a grin growing on his lips. "Yet here I am."
"Ray's here, that's why we came looking for you." Callen explained.
"Not that it was hard. We checked the room, you were gone. We immediately figured out where you'd went." Sam added.
"You'd better go see Ray, Deeks." Kensi laughed.
Deeks grabbed her hand a pressed a kiss two it, still not looking at her. "Don't keep me waitin' Fern. I love you." He said softly.
"I love you too." Kensi replied.
"Leo! Let's roll, Little Man!" Deeks called.
Tiny feet could be heard running towards him, before he felt his son wrap around his legs. "Hi Daddy."
"Hey buddy. Let's go see a friend of Daddy's, okay?" Deeks looked down at him.
"Otay!" Leo nodded.
Deeks released Kensi's hand and grabbed Leo's, then walked past the senior agents, headed to see his lifetime friend before he married the love of his life.
Deeks found Ray waiting for him back in his room. The man looked a lot better than he had the last time Deeks had seen him; he seemed happier, more free.
"Marty!" He yelled, rushing over to embrace the groom.
"Ray! I'm so glad you could be here!" Deeks grinned, slapping the man on the back.
"Oh my God." Ray said suddenly.
The shaggy many pulled back. "What? What is it?" He asked nervously.
Ray nodded towards Leo, who had climbed back up onto the bed where his toys had been left. "He looks exactly like you did as a kid." He laughed.
Deeks smiled again, shoving his hands into the pockets of his slacks. "Doesn't he though?" Then he turned to Leo. "Hey Leo, this your Uncle Ray. He's been like a brother to Daddy his whole life."
Ray smiled at Deeks before turning to the boy. "Hey little dude, it's nice to meet you."
"Hi Uncle Way!" Leo waved at the man.
"How old is he?" Ray asked.
"He'll be four soon."
Ray's voice lowered. "And, his mother?"
Deeks sighed and scratched his jaw. "Is no longer in the picture. But Kensi is in the process of adopting him. Papers should be finalized soon."
"Really? Well how about that. She's a good woman, I knew you were crazy about her." Ray grinned.
The mood changed back to the light heartedness it'd been moments before. "Yeah, you knew right away." Deeks smiled fondly.
At sunset, Deeks's anticipation was finally eased. He stood at the alter as Kensi walked towards him, looking absolutely beautiful. Her hair was pulled up into an elegant updo, and she had a long veil billowing behind her. Deeks was absolutely stunned. His heart was lodged in his throat, he couldn't even breathe.
He felt a nudge in his back, but couldn't turn his eyes away from his beautiful bride grinning at him. "Deeks, you gotta breathe man." Eric's amused voice filled his ears, but Deeks took no note.
"Mommy's pwetty." Leo said quietly from his spot in front of Deeks. He was the ring bearer, and he proudly held the pillow Nell insisted the rings had to be on.
"She's beautiful." Deeks replied as she reached the end of the aisle, standing in front of him now.
Her eyes were sparkling, and a faint blush rose on her cheeks at his softly spoke words. Deeks let out a shaky breath as he held his hands out for her to take. She quickly handed her bouquet to Nell and grabbed his hands tightly.
"You ready for this, Fern?" He asked, grinning.
"Are you?" She shot back, smirking.
Deeks laughed lightly as the officiant began talking. The words started to fade as he just stared into her eyes, completely enraptured.
"And now, Marty and Kensi would like to exchange the vows they've written." The man announced, breaking Deeks from his trance. He knew Kensi insisted he go first, so he took another breath.
"Well normally it's ladies first, but Kens is too chicken to abide by that." Deeks cracked a joke, and the small wedding party laughed. Kensi tried to hold hers in, but he could see the laughter in her eyes.
"I uh… I knew the moment you walked into that gym that you were something special. There was just something about you that has always drawn me in. I couldn't fight it, and I didn't want to. You, however, took a little convincing." He grinned, getting another laugh. "You are, the most amazing woman. You're my partner in crime-fighting and in raising Leo. I promise to always be by your side, whether you want me there or not." Kensi's eyes filled with tears, distracting Deeks for a moment. "I promise to enable your caffeine and sugar habits. I promise you I will irritate you every day until you wonder why you agreed to marry me." Kensi laughed at this, knowing this was true. "And then I promise to make you smile, so you say Ah, that's why I married this goof. I promise to never give you a reason to doubt me. And I promise to love you every day for the rest of our lives, no matter what." Deeks swallowed, his own tears pooling in his eyes.
"Kensi." The officiant urged.
Kensi shook her head, trying to keep the tears at bay. "Deeks. When I think about you one of the first things that comes to my mind is that you're my partner. You've been my partner in the field for years. Then I was your partner in helping with Leo. Then I was your partner in a complete different aspect of our lives. And today we become even stronger partners. I promise that I won't let you face anything alone, that I'll always be there for you and for Leo. I promise to love you both with all of my heart, for all of my days. I promise I will get frustrated beyond belief, and that I will probably make you just as frustrated." Deeks smiled at that. "But I promise we'll work through it. I promise to laugh at your ridiculous jokes." She teased.
"You love my jokes." He said softly.
"I promise to be all in, no more games, no more hiding. I promise to be all in every day for the rest of our lives." Kensi smiled, a few of her tears escaping.
"Don't cry Mommy!" Leo whispered dramatically.
The audience laughed and Deeks whipped the tears away carefully. "May we have the rings?" The officiant asked Leo.
"Here you go!" Leo grinned holding the pillow up.
Deeks placed the ring on Kensi's finger. "Marty, do you take this woman to be your wife?"
"I do." Deeks grinned.
Kensi put the ring on Deeks's finger and smiled up at him. "Kensi, do you take this man to be your husband?"
"I do." She whispered.
"I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride." The officiant smiled.
Deeks grinned. "C'mere, Wifey."
Kensi laughed as he pressed his lips to hers, and their family and friends all clapped and cheered.
"Yay!" Leo clapped excitedly.
The newly weds laughed lightly at Leo's antics, before smiling at each other again. "You just married me, do you realize that?" Deeks grinned.
"Oh no, did I really?" Kensi teased.
"Kensi Deeks, you can't deny you love me anymore. That ring on your finger proves it." Deeks said softly.
"I don't wanna deny it. I do love you, Deeks." Kensi smiled.
"I do love the sound of that." He beamed again, pulling her close to kiss her again.
