Chapter 39

Marty Deeks was many things, a father, a crime fighter, a surfer, and for three amazing months he'd been a husband. Even though he'd been a federal agent for quite some time, at heart, Deeks was still a detective. He was intelligent, and could see things that other people sometimes looked over.

So when Kensi's morning sickness really became routine, when she became overly emotional at random times, and when she tried the strangest combination of foods Deeks secretly switched her to decaf coffee. By the time her clothes started being a bit snug, he'd already started thinking about baby names.

He watched her behavior, and Deeks could tell that his beautiful wife had not keyed into the fact that she was eating for two now; somehow, she'd remained absolutely clueless. Deeks thoroughly enjoyed being the only person to know that their little family of three was turning into a family of four, and he was curious how long it would take for Kensi to realize she was pregnant.

Several weeks ago

Deeks woke up when she wasn't in bed next to him; her warmth was gone, and all he found as he reached out blindly for her was not warm sheets. He frowned at this thought, realizing that this was the third day in a row that this had occurred. Right on cue, he heard the unmistakable sound of throwing up coming from their bathroom. Deeks immediately threw the covers back and jumped out of bed, rushing to her.

"Kens..." Deeks murmured softly as he sat in the floor behind her, pulling her hair back away from her face. He heard her start to protest, but she stopped suddenly to tuck her head back to the toilet.

It tugged at his heart to see her like this; her slight whimpers made him want to wrap her in his arms and take all the pain away. Deeks knew he would if only he could. His eyes furrowed as he thought about how many days this had occurred.

He rubbed his hand up and down her back soothingly. "Wifey," he'd taken to calling her that every chance he got after their wedding, "this is the third day in a row you've been sick. We should really get you to a doctor." Deeks stressed.

Kensi groaned at the thought, sitting up and glaring at him. "Deeks, I am fine. I must have just eaten something bad. Probably that stupid fish taco you insisted on." She turned a bit green at the thought, and ducked her head back to the toilet.

"There was nothing wrong with that taco, and I ate one too. So if that were the case, then I'd be just as sick as you." Deeks frowned.

"Well maybe I got some bug or something. I'll be fine, Deeks. Really. It settles down after a while." Kensi insisted stubbornly.

"Yeah, until you start to think about food later in the day and suddenly have to throw up again. I know you don't want to think about this, but you may really need to see a doctor." Deeks could be stubborn too, especially when it came to her health.

Everything he'd said was true; she'd thrown up every morning for three days in a row, and every afternoon when she thought about lunch, and sometimes even in the evenings. It was almost as if she had…

Morning sickness.

Deeks's eyes widened at the thought. It's only been three days, he thought, don't jump to conclusions like that. But, the thought that she had morning sickness had taken root, and he began looking for other signs that she may be pregnant.

Deeks had mentioned to Hetty that Kensi had been throwing up frequently; he left out when she was doing this, however, so to keep her suspensions down. Deeks didn't want the little woman to think Kensi was pregnant if she really wasn't. However, if Kensi was Deeks wanted her chained to the desk immediately, not allowed in the field.

"Do you think something is wrong, Mr. Deeks?" Hetty had inquired.

Just the opposite, if I'm right. Deeks thought. "Yeah, no, no. It's just it might be better for her and Nell to switch roles until whatever this is chills out." He suggested.

Hetty considered him, and the man felt as if she saw right through him. "Very well, Mr. Deeks. Nell will accompany you out into the field while Ms. Blye-"

"Mrs. Deeks." He smirked slightly. Hetty had been slow to adjust to the name change.

"Excuse me, Mrs. Deeks, stays in OPS with Eric." She nodded slowly.

"Thank you, Hetty." Deeks smiled.

When his partner found out, however, the smile quickly vanished.

Kensi had been a storm of emotions when Hetty announced Nell was going to take her place. She shot Deeks a look of anger, before turning to Hetty. "Why exactly am I being replaced?" She demanded.

"Kens, baby, I asked her to do this." Deeks quickly stepped in.

"Didn't know you had a death wish, Deeks." Sam chuckled, promptly leaving the room.
"Good luck with that." Callen shook his head, following his partner.

Kensi's eyes narrowed and she shoved him. "Why would you do that? We're partners! I am not going to sit here while you guys are out there looking for these guys! And who says you get to decide what I do and don't do, huh? If you think just because we're married now that you have that kind of control and power over me you are dead wrong, asshole." Kensi snapped harshly.

Deeks's eyebrows rose, surprised. He chanced a glance over at Nell and Eric, who had wisely turned away and pretended they couldn't hear a word that was said. He took a slow breath before turning back to Kensi, who know looked utterly devastated as tears filled her eyes.

"Do you not want me out there with you? Am I not good enough to be your partner anymore?" She asked, the tears threatening to overflow.

"Kensi, no! That's not it at all! I'm just worried about you and this bug you've got." Deeks quickly explained, wrapping his arms around her.

"I can still be out there with you though." She mumbled sadly against his neck.

This swift change in her moods about killed Deeks. Kensi was hot as hell, and dangerous to boot, when she was angry; when she was sad like this though, it practically tore Deeks's heart out. He ran a hand through her hair and kissed her head.

"I know you can. I just pity whoever gets in your way, they're probably gonna get puked on and really, Fern, who deserves that?" He teased, trying desperately to make her smile.

She immediately burst into giggles, throwing her head back. "C-can you imagine?" She snorted, a brilliant smile on her face.

Nell and Eric had looks of complete confusion on their faces, and Deeks could only shrug. He smiled at her laugh, but was at a loss of what do to now. "I gotta go, okay?" He told her.

She was still laughing, so she just nodded her consent.

Mood swings. Deeks thought as he walked out. A grin grew on his face as the evidence started to pile up.

The family of three (soon to be four, Deeks suspected) had moved into the new house shortly after the wedding. It had a large living room that was perfect for making a blanket fort and watching movies. Leo was in charge of picking the movie out, with Deeks put the finishing touches on the fort and Kensi got snacks.

"Sugar Bear! Where's that food at? We're waitin' on ya!" Deeks called throughout the house as he and Leo crawled into the fort.

"Yeah, Mommy! We waitin'!" Leo added.

"I'm right here, boys! So impatient." She teased, her arms full of food. Kensi carefully sat down outside the fort as she placed the food down.

Deeks arched an eyebrow at the array of snacks she'd gathered: marshmallows, pickles, peanut butter, hot chips, and ice cream. "What happened to the popcorn and juice boxes?" He teased.

Kensi crunched up some of the hot chips and dumped them into her bowl of ice cream. "Eh," she shrugged, "this sounded better."

"Dat's gwoss, Mommy." Leo scrunched his nose up as Kensi dipped a pickle into the peanut butter and ate it.

She froze and looked between Leo and her snacks, tears filling her eyes. Oh God, Deeks thought, not again. "I… I just thought it'd taste good." She said softly.

"I bet it does, Fern! Don't you Leo?" Deeks said firmly to the boy.

Leo's eyebrows furrowed. "Maybe." He said hesitantly.

But their answers were good enough to stop the tears. Kensi immediately smiled and crawled into the fort. "You guys want some?" She asked.

"Nah, I'm actually not all that hungry. I'll let you have it." Deeks smiled at her.

"Aww, you're so sweet." Kensi smiled back.

"You're both gwoss." Leo shook his head, completely confused.

Weird food combinations. Deeks checked off in his mind, positive he was right. But it seemed Kensi still had no clue.

"Uck! Who made this coffee? It's terrible!" Kensi yelled through the bullpen.

"I made it, darling." Deeks called over his shoulder, before turning back to the guys.

Callen had made a cup but hadn't taken a drink yet, and eyed his cautiously. "You don't usually make horrible coffee." He said suspiciously.

"Has anyone seen where I put that jar of peanut butter?" Kensi asked, looking throw all the cabinets at their little coffee area.

"Nope!" They called back.
"Maybe Eric has it." Kensi mumbled, heading upstairs.

"Why is she putting peanut butter on everything?" Callen shook his head.

Sam looked at Deeks with a smirk. "You do know she's pregnant, right?" He asked.

Deeks sat back in his chair, grinning proudly. "Of course I do." He said, spreading his hands out widely. He guessed he wasn't the only one to know now. But then again, Sam had seen his wife be pregnant twice now, Deeks thought, it made sense that she figured it out.

Sam seemed surprised at his response. "Oh, you really do know."
"Wait, what?" Callen grinned. "No way!"

"Boys, there are a few things I do know. I know my wife better than anyone on this planet. I know when she starts acting weird. I also know what a pregnant woman goes through. Didn't take me long to connect the dots." Deeks explained.

"Does Kensi know?" Callen asked, still in disbelief.

"As far as I can tell, she has no clue." He replied.

Callen shook his head and took a sip of his coffee, before rearing his head back and scrunching his nose. "Ugh. Really, decaf?" He asked Deeks.

The shaggy man chuckled. "Well, as much as she drinks coffee I figured it'd be best to try and cut that caffeine. I've switched all our coffee to decaf, but kept it in the regular containers so she doesn't get suspicious. I'm trying to ease her into realizing what's happening." Deeks explained.

Truthfully, the reason why Deeks was so hesitant to fill Kensi in on the pregnancy was that he wasn't completely sure how she'd respond. They'd talked about having kids, and were in favor of it, but actually realizing it was happening was something totally different. Kensi had the habit of running whenever things got scary, and Deeks didn't want that to happen. But, he realized, she'd have to face it sooner or later.

Present

Deeks couldn't believe that his little boy turned four-years-old today. It seemed like a lifetime ago that he was born. So much had changed, and for the much, much better. They were having a party for him at their new house, with the entire team, Mr. Jason, Kensi's mother, and a few of Leo's friends from the preschool he'd started going to.

The whole backyard had been decorated with balloons and superhero logos, per Leo's request. Nell had given him a red cape perfect for his height the day before the party so he could wear it all day, and Leo refused to take it off. The fact that Nell had given it to him added to the wow factor.

The team had arrived a bit early, eager to see the boy on his special day. They'd gone outside and made themselves comfortable while Deeks checked on everything in the kitchen. Kensi was supposed to be downstairs helping him, but she'd yet to leave their room.

"Nell! Can you double check everything before Leo's friends get here? I'm gonna check on Kensi." Deeks called as he saw the redhead walk passed.

"Sure!" She smiled, immediately scanning the cupcakes.

Deeks hurried upstairs and walked into their bedroom, closing the door behind him. The sight that met him made him froze, his heart beating wildly. Kensi stood in the middle of their room in her panties and bra, glaring at the outfit she'd laid on the bed.

"You know, it's supposed to be Leo's birthday but I feel like I'm the one getting a present." Deeks teased.

She jumped slightly and turned towards him, wrapping her arms around herself. His eyes immediately narrowed suspiciously; this act of self-consciousness didn't suit her. Deeks carefully walked towards her, eyes raking up and down her gorgeous body.

"What's wrong?" He asked quietly.

"It doesn't fit." She shook her head.
Deeks's head tilted in confusion at that. "What doesn't fit?"

"The dress! My perfect dress that never makes me look fat or too skinny, the red one!" Kensi exclaimed, tears filling her eyes. Frustration rolled off her in waves, but there was something underneath it, she was nervous.

"So maybe it's getting old, shrunk in the dryer." Deeks shrugged.

He wasn't stupid; he knew exactly why the dress didn't fit. It was all Emma's fault…or maybe Madison… it could be a boy, he thought. Daniel? Deeks couldn't help but think of names, he was excited. He saw Kensi rub a hand down her stomach, and he smiled.

Her body had started changing, and she'd put a few pounds on. Deeks absolutely loved it; her curves were filling out more, and she had that "glow" that everyone always talked about. He could barely keep his hands off her lately.

"No, no I don't think it's the dress, Deeks. I'm getting fat!" She cried. "I just wanted wear my nice dress that I always look good in since I've felt like shit for weeks! We got married and now I'm fat!"

Deeks wanted to laugh. It was hard not to when she was being so dramatic. "So it's all my fault?" He asked.

"Yes!" Kensi exclaimed.

Well, it was partly my fault, Deeks thought with a smirk. He shoved his hands in his pockets to keep from grabbing her and pulling her body to his. "You sure you don't think anything's going on?" He asked softly.

Kensi looked up at him hesitantly. "Like what?"

Deeks got a tender look on his face as he tilted his head at her, leaning against one of the bed posts. "Well, uh, you've been getting sick in the mornings, and your sense of taste and smell are all bugged out. Your mood shifts real easy now. And your body is…" Deeks's eyes glazed over a bit. "Amazing. Your boobs are bigger, your ass." He smirked.

He watched as her eyes lit up as she realized what he was saying. "I…" She shook her head.

"Uh-huh." Deeks nodded.

"You mean that I'm…that we…" Kensi said slowly.

"Kensi, my love, that's exactly what I mean." He grinned.

Her eye filled with tears and she pressed her hands to her mouth. "I'm pregnant, aren't I?" She said, her voice laced with excitement.

Deeks filled with joy at hearing her say the words. "I'm positive you are, but there's a test in the bathroom if you need some more proof."

"Just to be sure." Kensi said quickly, turning and rushing towards the bathroom.

Deeks chuckled, rubbing his hands together. He'd known for weeks, but now it felt more real. A few minutes later, Kensi squealed and rushed towards him, throwing her arms around his neck. "It's positive. I'm pregnant." She beamed.

He grinned up at her before pressing his lips to hers. She smiled against his lips, and he was over the moon. Apparently, she wasn't running from this at all.

The doorbell rang, and broke the couple apart. Kensi gasped. "Oh! The party! We're supposed to be down there!" She left his embrace and rushed over to the closet, pulling a shirt and a pair of jeans out and tugging them on quickly. Deeks watched her, completely mesmerized.

"Deeks! What are you doing?" Kensi asked. "Go downstairs and host the party!"

"My pregnant wife is walking around practically naked, you expect me to leave this room?" He grinned.

Kensi's face flushed and she shook her head. "You are ridiculous. Get out. It is our son's birthday, and this is his party. Go play host." She demanded, but a smile still played on her lips.

"Yes ma'am." He winked at her, before turning.

Leo was over the moon. There were superhero signs everywhere, and lots of balloons which were just really cool. And his Nelly had gotten him this really cool cape, and it flew behind him when he ran. So he ran a lot. All his uncles were at his party, and Mr. Jason, and even his grandmommy; he didn't see her very often, but she was apparently Mommy's mommy.

His head hurt trying to remember all of this.

Today was his birthday and this was his party, and Leo felt really awesome. He'd snuck a cupcake when his Nelly wasn't looking, and it'd been fantastic. His friends had brought him these cool boxes with bows on them, and Leo was pretty sure they'd make good forts.

Mommy and Daddy had come to the party when his friends showed up, and they played lots of games and ran around in circles and Leo found out that the cool thing about the boxes was what was inside them. It was genius. Mommy and Daddy looked really happy, and Leo decided it must have been because today was his birthday. The sun finally went into hiding, and the moon came out to find it, but it was really hard because it got dark. Then his friends left, and his grandmommy, and Mr. Jason, but they'd given him extra hugs so it was okay.

Suddenly, Leo felt tired. He crawled up into Daddy's lap and rested his head on his shoulder. He felt the man chuckle, and it felt silly against his cheek. The grown-ups were talking, but they weren't making sense.

"We're so excited for you two!" Nelly said happily.
"Congratulations." Uncle Sam smiled.

The others said things like that, but it didn't make sense to Leo. "What's goin' on?" He asked.

Daddy looked at Mommy before smiling down at Leo. "We uh, Leo, Mommy's having a baby. That means you're gonna be a big brother, and will have a little brother or sister." He said slowly.

How does one have a baby? Leo asked himself. But the thought of having someone else to play with made Leo happy. He smiled real big. "That's cool!" He exclaimed.

The grown-ups all laughed, and Daddy held him tighter. "Yeah, buddy," he said softly. "It is."

Leo's eyes slowly closed, because it was his birthday and he'd played a lot, so it was okay to be tired. Besides, he didn't want to be cranky when his new baby got there. They'd have a lot of fun playing.

Leo couldn't wait.
