Chapter 5

We Need To Get Used To Each Other

Max

We've been in school for already 2 weeks and I'm sick of it.

Fang and I don't really participate in basic conversation,we have but not really, and only exchanging a few words here and they're mainly involving school work. He's texted me too, but they're literally 5 minutes long, and again, are only about school work.

I'm kind of glad though. I do not need to talk to him any longer than I should. Albeit has been like 3 years, I'm still very heartbroken guys. My heart feels a pinch of pain everytime my phone lights up with his name on my screen. But you learn to deal with it you know? Just plain old deal with it.

I'm sitting in music, eating a snack. The school lunch today wasn't very appetizing, so I skipped it and bought a few things from the vending machine.

I was munching away at my cereal bar, when I felt a presence to my left. I looked, and it was Fang. I really need to stop calling him that.

"Hey Nick. Uhm, what's up?"

"Well, I got bored of playing so I came here because you're the only one I know. So, what'cha eating?"

"Cereal Bar, mystery meat in the cafeteria looked like it was moving, so I settled for this."

"Ew really?" He laughed a little.

"I moved a solid 3 inches!" I said through laughs.

This was nice. It was progress.

"This was probably the first time we've had a conversation in a while", I said.

"Well, it was either speaking to one of the dweebs or you. So I settle for you." I didn't know whether or not to take that as a compliment or an insult, so i just sighed.

"Listen Nick, despite our history -"

"Blah, blah, blah, get to the point Maximum."

"- We need to get used to each other. We literally have 7 out of the 8 classes we get together, not my choice, not my fault."

He sighed. He knows I'm right. "You're right, but I'm just not comfortable because of the tension and the history we have with one another, you know? I just don't know how to cope."

"I understand, I get you, we both need work. Can we just agree to at least be friends until we graduate? That way our Senior year isn't complete and utter bullshit?" I stook my hand out, waiting for him to shake it.

He smiled, that same smile that I had fallen in love with way back when. He shook my hand, saying the word, "Deal", and we continued our conversation. Just asking normal questions. Exchanging jokes and gossip with one another.

I'm home now, just waiting for my mom to finish her cooking. It's around 6, and the smell of her meat loaf surrounds the house, and my heart. I love it when my mom makes meat loaf.

"MooooOOOM! How long until dinner is ready?!"

"Like now!" I smiled and ran down stairs.

Mom set the table for me her, and we ate in peace. After dinner, mom asked me the basic mom questions. The how was my day, are you liking your teacher, etc. etc. I gladly answered them, that is until she asked the last one.

"I heard Nick was in most of your classes. How're you holding up?"

I sighed.

"I'm actually doing fine mom. Today we became friends, only to make the year better for us."

"Well, I guess that's smart. Just be careful okay?"

"Okay." I smiled and hugged her. I did the dishes and made my up to my room. I did my homework. The whole 2 sheets worth of it, and got into bed. I really didn't want to think about Nick right now, usually because I tend to remember what had happened, and I prefer not to.

I closed my eyes for what felt like 5 minutes, but was awoken by a knock on my window. Now I know what you're all thinking.

Max, do not be the classic blonde and actually go toward scary noise.

My window didn't have blinds on it. I had ordered new ones about a week in advance and they should be coming in soon. I wanted a curtain, not the plastic blinds.

Anyways, I digress.

I turned my head a little to make it look like I wasn't actually awake, just incase there was murderer outside. But it wasn't.

It was Nick.

Just. Fucking. Peachy.

I got up and opened my window.

"Why are you here?" I said surprised. My house is the last house he should be at right now, especially considering our situation.

"I needed to talk to someone. I couldn't sleep and everyone else I knew was asleep, you're my last resort."

"Nick, go home." For real though why?

It was quiet for a moment. He looked around.

"The last time I did this, I was 15." I nodded my head. Awkwardddd.

"You need to get out of here before my mom figures you out. She's still upset about the whole ordeal."

"Wow okay. I guess I'll leave then." He made his way down, and started to walk home.

"Hey Nick!" I called out. He turned around, and waited for my words.

"If you really need someone to talk to, I'm here! But only if you really need me, okay?"

He smiled and gave me a thumbs up.

"Thanks Ride!"

I waved him a goodbye, and got back into bed.
