There was a minute. Well less than a minute. It was probably five seconds. Callie just tried to breath. Neither moved. Neither dared to blink. Arizona spoke again.
"Calliope?"
"Yes." The brunette finally spoke.
"Yes?"
Callie let out a small laugh as her smile grew impossibly large.
"Of course."
Arizona stood up and wrapped her arms around her. Again somebody had pressed pause. Callie's arms were around her waste. The side of their faces were pressed against one another.
"Yes." Callie repeated.
When they pulled apart Arizona slid the ring on her partner's finger. Looking down she saw just how beautiful it was. A gold band encrusted with diamonds. Lots of them.
"Its beautiful. "
"It was my grandmother's."
"Arizona..."
"I lied to you." The surgeon suddenly revealed. "I was only in Africa for two weeks. Then I flew to Miami to visit your parents."
"You asked for their permission?" Callie asked in disbelief.
"Hey your parents are the type of people that you should get a blessing from before proposing to their daughter."
"I guess." She responded as she tried to imagine the scene. "What would you have done if they'd said no?"
"Asked you anyway... And then fled the country."
Callie burst out laughing and then moved her hands to grip her lover's hips.
"What? Your parents are scary."
"Okay then what happened?"
"I flew to California to ask my parents about the ring. Your Dad insisted that I use his plane."
"Obviously."
"The ring was my grandmother's. Tim was supposed to use it to propose to his soul mate. She'd even written that in the will." Arizona's eyes changed the way they always did when she spoke of her brother. A mix of happy and sad that can only be expressive of loss. Callie responded by pulling her closer and kissing her forehead. The blonde continued.
"He never got the chance to meet his soul mate but I found mine so I asked my Dad if I could use his mother's ring."
There were tears now in Arizona's eyes. She tried to stop them but they fell anyway.
"He didn't even take a second to respond. He just nodded and said 'absolutely'. I'm sorry I lied..." She began before Callie leaned forwards to close the small distance and kiss her.
She was kissing her fiancé and it was perfect.
"I don't care that you lied Arizona." She smiled.
"I just wanted it to be a surprise."
"This is..." She made a point of making eye contact but it only lasted a few seconds before she looked away again. The surgeon knew she had something important to say. Arizona stepped out of the other woman's hold and moved behind the bar. She pressed a few buttons on the sound system. The speakers suddenly blared out 'Do you remember the twenty first night in September?'
The brunette laughed again and walked to meet her partner close to the bar. They soon wrapped themselves around one another and danced together. Callie span the blonde around and stopped her so that she pressed her front into her back. Their hips met and Arizona moved to her partner's rhythm, hands guiding her too. Towards the end of the track Arizona turned back around and Callie put her head on the surgeon's shoulder. As the music stopped Arizona spoke.
"I wanted it to be just like our first night. I could get hit by a bus tomorrow and I have the most beautiful human being in my heart and I want her to know."
"I know. I know now. I think I have been waiting for you to walk away."
"Still?"
"I'm sorry."
"Don't be. I knew I wasn't going anywhere Calliope. What could I find that would be better than this? Than you?"
"I know. I didn't realise until now. How I feel right now. I feel like I've... I don't know. Settled. Finally."
Arizona kissed her before whispering:
"I love you so much."
"I love you too."
After that the kissing grew more intense. More desperate. Both almost trying to burn all of their emotional fuel through this physical action.
As Callie's hands began to wonder down her lover's back, over her hips, stopping on her ass, Arizona suddenly opened her eyes and found her own fingers underneath the neckline of the brunettes dress.
"We can't do this."
"Why?" Callie asked whilst planting her lips on Arizona's neck, seeking out that spot.
"Our parents will be here in like ten minutes."
"What they're in Seattle?" She said against her fiancé's pulse point.
"Yeah."
"Why?"
"Engagement party."
"Not a welcome home party?"
"Correct."
"That was very presumptuous."
"Not really."
Callie lifted her head and the blonde continued.
"We practically agreed to getting married months ago."
"I still could have said no." She joked.
"And I would've texted Teddy to cancel but I didn't so a whole load of people will be here in five minutes so you'll have to hold on baby."
Feeling a little cruel, Arizona bit her lip and leant in close to Callie's ear. She trailed her hand down her lover's chest and squeezed her breast ever so lightly.
"Just hold on for me baby. Think you can do that for me?."
