I own nothing
Matthew went over to a nearby rock and sat down on it while Alfred moved so he would be propped up against the tree. The younger twin sighed.
"Alfred, what are we going to do?" he asked, tears coming to his eyes. "Nobody knows we're out here and our horses are gone. Also, we're injured. How are we going to get home?"
Alfred sighed and closed his eyes.
"I don't know Mattie," he said. "The only thing I can think of is waiting here until it gets to be morning."
"Same here," Matthew agreed, coming to the same conclusion, tears running down his cheeks.
Then, a blanket of silence covered the twin brothers.
Alfred took a deep breath, feeling his own tears come to his eyes, and looked his little brother in the eye.
"Mattie, I'm so sorry," said Alfred, as the tears began to run down his face. "I'm so sorry that I got us into this mess."
Then, he began to sob, muttering apologies to his brother. Matthew got up and went over to Alfred before sitting down and giving his brother a one armed hug.
"We're going to be alright," whispered Matthew, still crying. "Dad and Papa are going to find us."
The younger twin continued to say that to his brother in hopes to comfort him. Including himself.
"Ok, does everyone have their flashlights and walkie talkies?" Gilbert asked, holding up the items mentioned.
He heard the word 'yes' among the officers.
"Ok everyone," he said, turning on the flashlight. "Let's go."
Suddenly, the officers could hear hooves and neighing. Soon, they saw two horses race from the woods, neighing loudly. The officers jumped out of the way to let them through. Upon hearing the neighing, Arthur and Francis raced from the house to the spooked horses. Freedom and Maple Leaf reared and the two men stepped in front of them, saying calming words to them. Arthur took Maple Leaf's reins.
"Easy girl, easy," he told her, gently petting her.
Francis was saying the same soothing words to Alfred's horse Freedom. Arthur turned to his husband with a worried look.
"The boys usually can keep the horses calm if something spooks them," he said with concern.
"I know," said Francis with concern as well.
'Something went wrong,' thought the French man. 'I hope they're ok.'
"Take the horses inside," Francis ordered gently. "I'll be in to help in a minute."
Arthur nodded, taking Freedom's reigns and began to lead the horses to the stable while Francis went over to Gilbert.
"Gil, I…" he started.
Gilbert raised a hand to stop him.
"Say no more," he told him. "I'll make sure we find the boys and bring them back to you safe and sound."
Francis gave a slightly relieved but still worried smile.
"Thank you, mon ami," he said.
Then, he turned and started to walk back towards the stable.
"Oh Francis," Gilbert called.
The French man stopped and turned to his friend.
"We will find them," said Gilbert in very serious tone. "I will not leave this forest until they are found."
Those words made Francis feel better.
"Thank you," Francis repeated.
Then, he turned back around and began walking towards the stable.
'Please be ok boys,' he thought. 'Please be ok.'
