"It's Aria" Callie finally said the words and watched the blonde's eyes go from hurt to concern.

The air in their bedroom became tense for a second but it was punctured by crying from down the hall. Without thinking, the brunette moved to her daughter's room. She found Sofia sat on the edge of the bed with tears streaming down her face and immediately pulled her into her arms.

"Mommy." Came the cry, muffled by Callie's chest.

"What's wrong mija?" She asked as she sat down, not letting go of the girl. "Did you have a nightmare?"

The only response was a nod against her pyjama top.

"It's okay. You're okay." Callie soothed, rubbing circles across her daughter's back. Looking up she saw Arizona in the doorway and watched as she settled down next to them and wrapped her arms around them both.

"We're here Sofia." She reassured before kissing the three year old's head.

When she had calmed down, the surgeon spoke again.

"Do you think you can go back to bed now Sofia?"

The girl's head suddenly sprung up from where it was resting on Callie's chest and she clung a little tighter to the woman.

"Don't leave Mommy!"

"Hey," She soothed. "I'll stay till you go back to sleep okay?"

"Mommy had a long day and she needs to sleep too okay baby girl?" Arizona explained.

Sofia nodded.

The blonde kissed them both goodnight and shut the door behind her. Callie lay down with the girl still in her arms. She would honestly never let her go if Sofia needed her. In the quiet and still darkness she braved a whispered question.

"What happened in your nightmare mija?"

The words that came back broke her already fragile heart.

"You never came home Mommy."

She woke up in her daughter's bed and found the three year old sleeping soundly next to her. Standing and leaving the room without waking her, Callie stretched her muscles and cracked a few bones. Sleeping in such a confined space had not been wise.

When she got back to her room it was empty and a quick check of the clock showed it was way past the time her wife would have left for work. She decided to take the chance that Sofia would sleep a little longer and take a shower.

She was right. Clearly exhausted, she didn't wake up at all and Callie had to try to raise her. Eventually the promise of pancakes did the trick.

Arizona didn't make it home until after dinner time.

In fact the unusual quiet when she came through the door meant that Sofia must be in bed. She found Callie clearing up from dinner in the kitchen.

Something made her stay on the opposite side of the island to her partner.

"Hey." It was almost a question from Callie's lips. "Have you eaten? Me and Sofia made lasagne."

"I'm fine."

"Arizona, the baby needs…"

"The baby is fine. I'm fine. You never came back to bed." She'd had a long day and wanted to get to the point.

"I guess I crashed. Sofia isn't asleep yet. She's had her story but I said she could wait ten minutes to see if you came back." The brunette said as she went back to washing up.

Rubbing her tired eyes Arizona moved to the stairs. Her daughter was lying in bed discussing something important with her teddy but stopped when she went in and knelt by the bed.

"Momma"

"Hey baby girl. Have a good day with Mommy?" Years of working as a paediatric surgeon made this part easy. Pretending she wasn't worried like hell about her wife.

"Yeah. She made pancakes. And then we went park. And then market so we could make dinner. Mommy said it's your favourite."

"Yeah?"

"Yeah. Said she missed you."

Arizona smiled a genuine smile.

"I missed her too Sof. So you helped cook?"

"Mommy said not to tell you." Sofia said looking guilty.

"Why?"

"Said you worry."

Leaning down the blonde kissed her forehead.

"Was Mommy with you the whole time?" When she got a vigorous nod in response she continued. "Then how can I worry?" Sofia smiled. "Now, time to go to sleep, okay."

After another kiss she left the girl to rest.

Callie was sat on Tuesday Evening in her office at The Acorn when the door opened suddenly.

"Knocking!" She said in frustration without looking up from her laptop.

"Why, worried you're gonna get caught?"

She looked up to find her wife smiling at her. She didn't take her eyes off of her the whole time Arizona came to sit next to her on the sofa.

"I thought you were someone annoying." The brunette explained before kissing her.

"Well, I'm glad you don't find me annoying yet."

"Give it a few more years." She shrugged, receiving a slap on the arm in response, before going back to her laptop screen.

"Working too hard again?"

Closing her eyes she savoured the feel of Arizona's lips on her shoulder.

"Well?" Her partner pushed.

"I'm thinking of selling."

The blonde's head shot up and they made eye contact.

"Not everything. I'd keep The Avenue, Acorn, Gregory's and Amber's but everything else. I wouldn't even sell. I'd hand it over to Jonathon tomorrow."

"He's not gonna let you do that."

"I know. What do you think though? Of me scaling back."

Arizona placed her hand on the other woman's knee.

"I've never interfered with your business stuff Calliope."

"Darling, this would be a big deal and you're my wife. I mean it would be a loss of income for one thing."

The blonde laughed. "Yeah I bet you'll really be struggling."

"Okay I'll be doing more at the centre."

"Which would make you endlessly happy." Arizona smiled and licked her lips. "Actually, you having time on your hands might be a good thing in the future." She couldn't stop smiling. She couldn't believe she'd held onto the news for as long as she had. Her heart felt like it was going to burst out of her chest.

"Wait." Callie had clearly caught on. "Are you saying it worked?"

"Yes." She replied breathlessly and watched her wife's face. Arizona could remember the last time she'd seen her Calliope speechless. It was when she had proposed.

"How long…. How long have you known?"

"I found out today."

That was it. The brunette started to cry.

Arizona straddled her hips and kissed away her tears before kissing her lips. The most important person in her life was flying but she would keep her grounded.

"We're having a baby Calliope."

Returning downstairs from kissing her daughter goodnight, Arizona found her partner in the living room staring at a wall.

"I wish you'd tell me what's going on in that head of yours." The frustration was seeping in.

"I was actually thinking about when you told me that you were pregnant with Sofia."

"Well for her sake then!" She suddenly yelled, prompting Callie to stand up to match her stance. "You've not mentioned Aria in five years." The surgeon spoke calmer. "Did something happen in Miami? Is that why you're struggling? Aria does something to you."

Callie's head started to spin and she brought her hands to her eyes. She was having the onset of a panic attack.

"I can't believe you thought I was gonna do anything… violent."

"You have a temper."

"You thought I was gonna hurt Arizona."

"Aria does something to you Cal, she always has."

"Calliope, baby." Arizona tried to make a move towards her wife.

"No!" She yelled before remembering who was upstairs but still made it clear that she wanted space. "You said that we didn't have to talk about it."

"That was if you were okay. You are clearly not okay." The surgeon pleaded. "Please. I love you."

Callie looked deep into her partner's eyes, still struggling to control her breathing. She felt an inexplicable sense of anger.

"Maybe I don't want you to know every fucking screw up."

With that she walked out.

Out the room.

Out the house.

Arizona collapsed on the sofa and burst into tears but reached for her phone on autopilot and text the only person she knew would have a clue.
