Chapter 14: The 60's Decade Dance
That morning I woke up with terrible headache. How did I even end up back in my room? The pounding in my head got louder and I groaned, rolling over and moaned in pain. The last night event had got me drinking and vampires hardly get drunk. After a few minutes lying down, I finally managed to get on my feet.
Walking past the mirror, I had to look at my reflection twice. I was still in yesterday's clothes but the left sleeve was ripped opened. The dress itself was stained with dry blood and I frowned. Taking it off, I examined the dress, making sure the stains was indeed, human blood.
"I can't believe I actually blacked out," I muttered, massaging my temples as I headed into the bathroom. After I showered and drank my coffee, I headed to the Salvatore Boarding House. Damon and Stefan had agreed to give the deed to Elena for the time being, creating a safe house. As much as I hated living under the same roof with John, I decided I would still stay there. Someone had to be there for Jeremy.
"Do you think he killed her?" I heard Damon asked as I approached the house.
"Katherine? Probably," Stefan replied solemnly. Although the two hated the brunette bitch, the thought of Klaus killing her somehow made them feel a little sick. After all, Damon and Stefan had been in love with her even though that was a long time ago.
"I don't think so," I said, joining them. "He'd probably torture her for centuries until he gets bored," I said.
"Hmm, it's not like she didn't have it coming," Damon said after a while and I nodded.
"Are you…okay?" Stefan asked. I looked up at him questioningly before I remembered yesterday's event. I was really close with Isobel and Katherine to the extent that I thought of them as a family. And having the two of them stabbing me in the back in one day was outrageous. But I had stopped caring. I was angry, betrayed but above all, I was fine.
"Yeah," I said nonchalantly. "Why wouldn't I be?" I asked. The two brothers shared a look and Damon shook his head silently. "What?" I asked and luckily, the topic was dropped as the door opened. We walked toward the house, giving the lawyer a smile. I bumped into Damon as he stopped in his tracks suddenly and I glared at him.
"I'm sorry, I completely forgot," Elena said bashfully and walked to us. "Stefan, Vanessa. Would you like to come inside my house?" she asked playfully and I laughed.
"I would love to," Stefan said, entering the house.
"Thank you," I chirped, patting Damon on his back harshly as I entered Elena's new house. Elena dropped her smile and gave Damon a look.
"What are we? 12?" Damon asked, shooting her an incredulous look.
"One of us is," Elena said dryly and I snickered. "If I let you in, do you promise to obey the owner of this house?" she asked as Damon glared at Stefan and I who were holding back our laughter.
"No," he said.
"Seriously, Damon. My way. You promised. I call the shots. No lies, no secret agendas. Remember?" Elena insisted and I smirked.
"Yes, Elena. Sure," he finally said.
"Then please, come in," Elena said and Damon finally entered the house. "Shut up," he said to Stefan and I who were smirking.
"Thanks," Elena said as Bonnie handed her, her jacket.
"Wait, where are you going?" Stefan asked.
"School," Elena replied, putting on her jacket.
"Huh?" Stefan asked dumbly, hearing her answer.
"No, no, no. We didn't create a safe house for you to leave it," Damon protested.
"Yeah, guys, Klaus is out there. We know that," Stefan said.
"Right. But where? No one knows. Look, I really appreciate what you guys are doing. And I'll be able to sleep at night knowing that I'll be safe here, but I'm not going to be a prisoner," Elena said determinedly.
"Your way, Elena," Damon said dryly.
"Don't worry, I'm ready. If he shows his face, I can take him. I know how," Bonnie said and I nodded.
"The way I see it, next to Bonnie is the safest place that I can be," Elena said, taking the witch hand. I raised my eyebrows at her words, slightly offended. "Come on," she said to Bonnie. Damon and Stefan shared a look and I beckoned the younger Salvatore to come with us.
"Wait, um, coming!" he said and followed us outside.
In the classroom, Elena had excitedly waved the 60's decade dance poster to Stefan who shook his head no. She pouted and looked at me who was just about to sit next to Stefan and I nodded with a grin. She smiled, turning to Bonnie and showed her the poster. Bonnie nodded too, and Elena turned back to Stefan and grinned smugly. Stefan shot me a glare for agreeing with Elena and I smirked.
"What? It's been a while for me," I remarked and he rolled his eyes. It was true though, it's been more than a year since I went to this dance with Elena. We liked to dress up and mom would take lots of pictures of us.
"Hello class!" Alaric said loudly, announcing his arrival as he entered the class. He cleared his throat and flipped his book open, almost clumsily. "What…are we learning today?" he asked to himself.
"With the decade dance tonight, we've been covering the sixties all week," Dana answered.
"Right. The sixties," Ric said and stared at the class. I frowned, noticing how weird he was being. I guess his breakup with Jenna was eating him inside out. "The, uh…ahem," Ric wrote on the board.
"The sixties. I wish there was something good I could say about the sixties, but... Actually, they kind of suck. Except for the Beatles, of course. They made it bearable. Uh, what else was there? The Cuban missile thing, the... we walked on the moon. There was Watergate," I frowned as Ric looked totally lost.
"Watergate was the seventies, Ric. I-I mean, Mr. Saltzman," I said spontaneously and corrected myself bashfully.
"Right. It all kind of mushes together up here, the sixties, seventies. Thank you, Vanessa," he said with a smile and I nodded, embarrassed. Ric however, wasn't being himself for the entire class. When the class was over, I waited for a while before walking up to Ric.
"Hey, you okay?" I asked him gingerly.
"Yeah, yeah," he replied and gave me a smile. He looked somehow distracted.
"Okay then…" I trailed off, as he stared at me for a while.
"How about you? With Isobel…and Katherine?" he asked and I shrugged.
"I'm good. I don't know, I have other things to think about," I told him. "Like the dance tonight," I added excitedly and he chuckled. "Things with Jenna, it'll work out," I said and he stared at me before nodding.
"Yeah, I know. She just need some time," he said and I nodded.
"I should go," I said and he nodded.
"Sure, I'll see you," he said and I waved, heading to the cafeteria.
"Hi, what's up?" I asked, Jeremy who was walking off from Bonnie and Elena quite angrily. He just gave me a glance and continued stalking off. "What's up with him?" I asked Bonnie and Elena, slipping into the seat across to Bonnie.
"Bonnie was just telling him to dress up for tonight," Elena said and I laughed. I knew how Jeremy hated this kind of events.
"Hey, Elena, there you are!" Dana said as she approached us. "Okay. This is going to sound freaky, but this totally hot guy just asked me to ask you if you're going to the dance tonight," she said excitedly and I snorted.
"Tell him she has a boyfriend," I said taking a sip of my water.
"You could at least meet him. He'll be at the dance tonight. Look for him. His name is Klaus," Dana said and I choked on my drink. Elena looked stunned and shared me a nervous look.
"I'm sorry, what did you just say?" she asked Dana nervously.
"His name's Klaus. I know the name's stupid, but I swear he's hot," Dana said and the memories from our encounter flooded my mind.
"Damn right," I muttered under my breath, glancing around to see if he was actually there, watching us.
"Where is he? Is he here?" Bonnie asked her.
"I don't know," Dana answered blankly.
"She's being compelled," Bonnie said.
"But he wants to know if you'll save him the last dance. How cute is that?" Dana said.
"Very cute," I muttered dryly. Glancing over at Elena, I reached out to grasp her hand and squeezed it. Everything will be fine.
"So we go to the dance, we find him," Damon said simply.
"Really? How are we going to do that?" Stefan challenged him. "We don't even know what he looks like."
"Something tells me he's not going to be 16 and pimply," Damon remarked and I rolled my eyes.
"Vanessa?" Elena asked and I sighed. Having the only one to have actually met the mighty Original, I thanked him for not wiping my memories.
"I had actually tried to sketch him, but since I was stabbed in the back yesterday, I didn't really have the time to finish it," I said, digging my back for that sketch. "He's tall, around 5'11, curled blond hair and blue eyes," I said, handing Stefan the sketch. "I suggest we double our intake on vervain," I said, and Stefan nodded as he passed the sketch to Damon.
"He could be anywhere at any time. He compelled somebody at school," Stefan said and sent us girls a look. "I guess it's not as safe as you guys thought, huh?" he said, rubbing it on us and I rolled my eyes. Lucky for us, Alaric knocked on the door before entering the house.
"There you are," Damon said.
"Sorry I'm late," he said, joining us.
"Hey, I need you to put me down as a chaperone at the dance tonight. Klaus made his first move," Damon told him.
"Okay, so we find him and then what, hmm? What's our plan of attack?" Elena asked.
"Me. I'm the plan. He has no idea how much power I can channel. If you can find him, I can kill him," Bonnie said with full confidence.
"That's not going to be that easy. I mean, he is the biggest, baddest vampire around," Alaric said and I raised an eyebrow at his tone. If I didn't know better, it seemed like he was praising Klaus.
"Alaric has a point. I mean, what if he..." Damon suddenly charged on Bonnie before he was sent flying backwards and knocked on some books on the table. A playful grin appeared on my lips and I restrained myself from high-fiving Bonnie.
"Well, I was impressed," Stefan commented and I smirked.
"It doesn't matter if he's an Original. I can take down anyone who comes at me. I can kill him, Elena. I know I can," she said reassuring Elena and Elena gave Bonnie a smile. She was glad.
"Wow, you picked me up," I said, surprised to see his blue convertible Camaro parked in front of my house.
"I'm your date, of course I'll pick you up," Damon said with a light smirk. Damon had settled from being a chaperone to my date since I didn't have one. What a sad life. The drive was silent and when we reached the school we saw Bonnie and Jeremy. Damon stopped me from walking over to them and we listen to their conversation.
"Just because a bunch of dead witches gave me a warning doesn't mean I'm going to die," Bonnie told Jeremy. I frowned and looked at Damon.
"So you're saying there's a 50-50 shot you won't? Look, I'm sorry. But...you know I don't have the best luck in the girlfriend department," Jeremy said sadly.
"Hey, listen, I...I can't explain it. But I can feel them. I'm empowered, Jeremy, I can do this. I know I can. I'm strong enough," she said confidently, trying to convince him. They hugged, and Damon motioned me to walk with him.
"Damon," Bonnie said, slightly panicking when she saw him. I gave her a look, scolding her for not telling me.
"Evening," Damon greeted with a smirk and led me inside.
"Evening?" I asked him disbelievingly and he just chuckled. "We just found out that Bonnie might die in her attempt to kill Klaus!" I hissed under my breath and he gave me a look to not worry. "They have to be other ways," I muttered.
"Vanessa, we only have one shot at this," he said.
"So you're going to let her die?" I asked and he shushed me when we saw the rest walking over.
"Are you good?" I asked Elena and she nodded nervously, tightening her hold on Stefan's hand. We moved through the crowd when Dana said she had a special shout-out and we stopped. It couldn't be Klaus, could it?
"This is for Elena, from Klaus," Dana said and everyone started cheering. I looked around instantly, trying to spot him.
"That was a lame, cheap shot. He's just trying to bait us," Damon commented snidely.
"I know everyone here," Elena said, looking around.
"He's not here," I confirmed.
"Maybe he just wants us to believe that he's here," Stefan said, trying to comfort Elena.
"It's a party, people. Blend. Let him come to us," Damon said casually.
"Good idea," Bonnie said as she dragged Jeremy to the dance floor and I smirked.
"No, no. I really don't feel like dancing," Jeremy protested.
"Too bad," I heard Bonnie replied.
"There's Ric. I'll be back," he said to me and I scoffed, coming with him.
"I want to dance," I whined slightly and Damon ignored me.
"Special dedication, huh? This guy's a little twisted," Alaric remarked when we reached him.
"I'm not impressed," Damon said and I watched as Alaric seemed surprised.
"No?" he asked and I narrowed my eyes at him.
"That was kinda lame," I said, trying to get a reaction out of him and watched as something flickered in his eyes.
"Let me know if you see anything out of whack," Damon said before leading me to the dance floor.
"See you around, Ric," I waved casually and followed Damon. I let out a surprise gasp when Damon twirled me around and pulled me to him.
"You're good," I said surprised and Damon laughed.
"I'm awesome," he said and I chuckled.
"So what are we going to do?" I asked him, regarding Bonnie's suicide mission.
"She said it herself she can kill him. Relax, Vanessa," Damon said and I rolled my eyes.
"We can't just let her die," I told and he just nodded.
"I'm thinking of something," he said. We danced for a while until Damon said he had to dance with Elena. I saw Stefan going over to Caroline and split up with Damon. I went over to get some drinks and smiled at Alaric.
"Hey," Alaric approached me and he got some drink too. "How are you doing?" He asked and I shrugged.
"Just fine," I said, unsure of what he was really asking.
"Not shaken that Klaus's here?" he asked and I looked at him quizzically.
"Not really," I replied.
"You've met him," Ric stated and I nodded.
"Yeah," I said simply. "Are you okay?" I asked Ric. He didn't seem to be himself today.
"Yeah, it's just Jenna…and the stress," he said and I continued to stare at him. Lies. "Is Bonnie okay? Can she do this?" he asked changing the topic.
"I hope so. We're just worried, you know. Jeremy said channeling that much power can kill her," I told him.
"Hmm," he said.
"I'm gonna go to Bonnie," I told, and walked over to Bonnie who was standing alone without Jeremy.
"Have you seen Damon? Oh, never mind," I said when I saw him enjoying himself as he danced with the two girls. "Where's Jeremy?" I asked.
"Not here," she said.
"About that," I said seriously and she looked at me.
"You can't tell Elena," Bonnie said and I nodded.
"I know. I…" I trailed off, not sure of what to say. Elena suddenly came over and grasped Bonnie's arm.
"I need to talk to you," she said fiercely and Bonnie looked at me. Stefan who was behind her walked to Damon and I followed suit.
"Come here, come here, come here," Stefan said, anger radiating through his body as he pulled Damon away. "Please tell me you didn't know that Bonnie was on a suicide mission."
"Oh, great. Jeremy told you and of course you told Elena," Damon said.
"Yeah, I told her. You promised her no more secrets," Stefan said through his gritted teeth.
"I changed my mind," Damon said simply and I rolled my eyes.
"Did you know?" Stefan asked me and I nodded. "And you're not going to do anything?" he asked me angrily and I glared at him.
"What can I do about that, huh?" I asked him, pushing his chest harshly.
"Where's Elena?" Damon asked, changing the subject.
"Great," I muttered under my breath. We went to look for them when I heard noises in the hallway. I saw three guys beating Jeremy up and felt my face changed. I ripped one of the guys away from Jeremy and slammed him to the lockers.
"Not my little brother, asshole," I snarled, pulling his hair and angled his neck when a sharp pain shot at my back making me fell to my knees. I heard Damon groaned as he was staked as well.
"Let me guess, Klaus says hi," he said and pulled on the stake and attacked one guy. The guy that I attacked had pulled out a gun which I assumed had wooden bullets in it. Slapping the gun away, I pulled him to the floor and kicked him hard in the stomach.
"No, no, no, no, don't kill him. He's compelled," Stefan said quickly when Damon was about to kill the human.
"So?" he shot back angrily.
"So, the whole thing's a distraction. Go find Bonnie and Elena. I got this. Go," Stefan said to us. Damon threw the guy to the locker and pulled the stake from my back. I groaned in pain but Damon urged me to hurry up. We headed out quickly, searching for Elena.
"Damn it, where's she?" Damon slammed the locker as we failed to find them.
"Ric…" I muttered in realization.
"What?" Damon asked and I looked at him. Everything fell perfectly together.
"We have to find him. He has Elena!" I said, going back to the dance floor and scanned for Alaric.
"What are you talking about?" Damon asked and I held my hand up for him to shut up.
"He's not here," I said, going back inside, looking for every classroom. "Ric has been acting strange the whole day. He wasn't being himself. And where did those guys get the weapons? I doubt that Klaus has crossbows and stakes. Those are Ric's," I told Damon.
"That doesn't make sense," he said although he knew what I said could be right. "Nessa!" he called, opening the door and I sighed in relief at the sight of Bonnie and Elena.
"What happened?" Damon asked.
"Klaus is in Alaric's body," Elena said and if it wasn't a serious situation I'd have said 'I told you so' to Damon.
"He is possessing it or something," Bonnie said.
"Go find Stefan, now," he said to Elena.
"Okay," Elena said, still standing there.
"Now," Damon ordered. "You go with her," he said to me and I grabbed Elena's hand.
"Come on," I urged and we headed back to the dance floor.
"Hey, are you okay?" Caroline asked us.
"Um…yeah," Elena said when Matt approached us. "I'm just…I'm looking for Stefan," she said.
"Seriously, what's wrong?" Caroline asked.
"Uh just um…just stay with Matt, okay?" Elena said.
"Lena!" I took her hand when I saw Stefan coming in, searching for her too.
"There you are," Damon said once he found us.
"What are you doing? Where's Bonnie?" Elena asked, scared for her friend.
"She's doing what she has to do," Damon answered and Elena looked at him.
"What?" Elena asked in disbelief.
"Where is she?" I asked and he gave me that look. They had planned something.
"Let her do this," Damon said annoyingly calmed.
"Damn it, Damon! Where is she?" Stefan asked angrily. Bonnie was fighting with Alaric/Klaus and Elena was panicking. Looking at Damon, I grabbed him and pulled him a couple of feet away from them.
"What did you do?" I asked him lowly.
"Nothing," Damon said.
"Damn it, just tell me," I hissed and he sighed.
"Bonnie will fake her death, and Klaus will think she's dead," Damon said simply and I looked at him in awe.
"He'll have no idea what's coming for him," I said and he smirked.
"Brilliant," I told him, patting his back.
"Hey, I need you to act like you don't know, okay?" he said and I rolled my eyes.
"I fooled you people that I was Cassidy," I reminded him smugly, before joining Elena and Stefan. When I entered the already quiet room, I didn't have to act. Seeing Bonnie lied there in Elena's arms, lifeless brought tears to my eyes. Elena was crying and I felt hot tears welled up in my eyes. I can't see Elena like that.
"Elena," I said softly, stroking her back. "Shh, everything will be fine," I said and she cried harder. I heard Damon walked in.
"Stefan, get Elena out of here. I'll deal with the body," Damon said, all business like.
"What do you mean, 'deal with it'?" Elena asked.
"The sheriff can't know about this. Last thing we need is another mysterious death," Damon said.
"This is Bonnie!" Elena screamed.
"Get her home. Now. So I can clean this up," Damon said, shooting me a look.
"Hey, hey, hey," Stefan comforted Elena, as he helped her up.
"No. Jeremy. Oh, my God, Jeremy. What about Jeremy?" Elena questioned.
"I'll find him," I said, squeezing her hand comfortingly. Once Stefan and Elena left, Damon closed Bonnie's eyes.
"What if…it didn't work?" I asked him, slightly anxious. I mean, there was no heartbeat and to me, Bonnie actually seemed dead.
"Have a little faith," Damon said, taking Bonnie into his arms. We placed Bonnie's body in the trunk when Jeremy finally arrived.
"Damon! Vanessa! Hey, I got your message, I can't find anyone. Where's Elena, where's Bonnie?" he asked and Damon and I shared a look.
"We need to have a little talk," Damon said and I gave Jeremy a grim smile. Then his eyes widened.
"You," Jeremy said, pointing at me and I raised an eyebrow at him.
"What?" I asked.
"You're a vampire," he said and I remembered me attacking the guys that beat him up.
"Right…" I said awkwardly, glancing at Damon before turning to Jeremy. "Did I…forget…to tell you?" I asked him innocently and he looked at me in disbelief. All I could do was gave my little brother a charming smile.
