Chapter 19: Her Little Secret

"What are you doing in my sister's room?" I asked Damon disapprovingly and he gave me a light smirk.

"Nessie, we got a lead. Stefan's in Chicago," Elena told me quickly and I nodded at her.

"Yeah, I know," I said briefly, not wanting to tell her that it was Katherine who told me. And based on Damon's face, she told him too.

"Before I forgot, Miss Vanessa," Damon said lightly in a mocking manner and I raised an eyebrow at him. "I need to talk to you about your…plan in helping out a certain someone," he said and jutted his chin towards the door.

"What? Now?" I asked, holding on to the towel that wrapped around my body tightly. "Well, let me dress first." I shot him a look and he smirked at me before going out of Elena's room.

"What was he talking about?" Elena asked as I walked up to her dresser.

"I'm gonna need to borrow something…" I trailed off, looking through her bracelets and necklace.

"What are you doing?" Elena asked and I pursed my lip, picking up a blue hair clip with butterfly on it.

"Pretty," I commented and grabbed her soft pink lipstick. Before she could ask anything else, I headed out of her room. I put on a dark blue sundress with floral prints and carefully curled my hair. It needed to be slightly curly but then again, who cares? Klaus wouldn't really know about Cassandra and Vanessa hairstyle. I put on a gold bangle and put on a few rings. I touched up my makeup, making sure it looked more feminine and matured and headed to Jenna's room to borrow her high heels.

"Well, look at you, Cass," Damon said wryly when I walked into the living room. I rolled my eyes before smirking.

"Pretty convincing, huh?" I asked, giving him a twirl.

"Can I ask you why you are doing this?" he asked me sternly and I looked away with a sigh.

"It's not just for Katherine," I said in a hushed whisper, glancing at the stairs and back to Damon. "I'm curious. I wanna know what happened to her as well."

"It's Klaus. You didn't even fool Elijah, remember?"

"Hey! He was fooled, okay? Even if it was just for a few minutes," I said grudgingly and listened as Elena closed the door. "She can't know. You won't tell her," I stated fiercely and looked up at Elena with a smile. And she eyed me suspiciously.

"Let's go, then," Damon said and we followed him to the car.

We arrived at an old, poor looking flat and I grimaced in distaste. And Elena shared my opinion as well.

"Stefan could live anywhere in Chicago and he chose this?" Elena asked.

"There used to be an all-girls' high school around the corner, but it shut down for attendance issues," Damon explained.

"Huh, I wonder why," I muttered dryly.

"If you're trying to scare me into giving up and going back, it's not going to work," Elena said stubbornly and Damon shushed her. He broke the locked easily and opened the door.

"Here we are. Stefan's second personality home," he said as we entered.

"He obviously hasn't been here," Elena said, brushing her hand on the dusty couch. It wasn't that bad, the apartment.

"Tour is not over yet," Damon told and led us toward a wall with a rack of tableware before opening a hidden door.

"Stefan hid his alcohol. What a monster," Elena said sarcastically and I rolled my eyes. She wasn't seeing what I was seeing.

"Look harder," Damon said simply.

"It's a list of names," I told her. Elena came closer to the wall and saw the names written on the wall.

"These are all of his victims?" Elena asked aloud as I examined the names. The first name was Giuseppe Salvatore, his father. And there were hundreds of his other victims.

"Still handling it?" Damon asked Elena meaningfully, before leaving the room.

"What kind of person wrote names of his victims on a wall?" I asked, frowning and ignored the glare that Elena sent to me.

"What were you doing in the 1920s? Paving the way for women's liberation?" Elena asked Damon, her voice seemed angry.

"I was around. Chicago's a big city. Stefan was a cocky ripper douche. But I could avoid him and still indulge in a few Daisy Buchanans of my own," Damon said, shrugging and I rolled my eyes.

"Where are you going?" Elena asked suddenly as Damon made his move to leave.

"His old stomping ground," Damon said.

"I'm coming with you!" She exclaimed hurriedly.

"No. You two stay here and whip up an actual plan. I'll come back when I find him," he said before leaving us.

I shook my head as I texted the number that Katherine had given me.

I'm here - V

It took her a few seconds before she replied.

Where are you exactly? -K

At Stefan's old apartment. Do you know where it is? -V

Give me ten minutes -K

"Who are you texting?" Elena asked and I looked at her, with a raised eyebrow.

"Caroline. Why?" I lied without missing a beat.

"All summer while I tried to find Stefan, you discouraged me just like Damon did. Why now?"

"I saw his victims, Elena," I said bitterly. "The person who did that, wasn't Stefan that I-that we know," I told her, trying not to be harsh.

"He's not-"

"I don't want you to get more broken hearted than you need when you find out he doesn't want you," I said and watched as her eyes flared in anger and her face reddened. "Right now," I quickly added before sighing.

"I expect more from you. You are my sister! The least you could do is support me!" she said and I pursed my lips, fixing her with a stern look.

"You're not a vampire. You don't get it," I said and luckily Katherine texted me just in time.

"What's that supposed to mean?" Elena asked demandingly and I took a deep breath. I didn't want to lose control again, especially to Elena. I didn't know why Elena had become such an annoyance to me, especially lately.

"It's annoying," I blurted out and I looked up at her, getting on to my feet. "Klaus said he'll return Stefan to us once he's done helping him. All you need to do is wait instead of coming close to Klaus. Who knows what he'll do if he finds you still alive," I said, going out of the apartment without another word. Once I wasn't in the same room with Elena, the air became less stuffy and I breathed in relief. I massaged my temples, feeling the stress and thought to myself. I hope Stefan would return quickly, so that he could control Elena's annoying behavior.

Turn right

A text came in and I turned right, facing a small café. I walked inside and saw Katherine's signature curly brown hair and walked to her. I slipped into a seat across her, and she looked up at me with a smile.

"Thanks for coming," she said and I lifted an eyebrow at her.

"Was I supposed not to come?" I asked and she gave me a smile.

"Don't tell me you aren't in the slightest curious about my sister and her relationships with the Original brothers," she said and I rolled my eyes. Katherine smirked lightly and placed a white paper bag in front of me.

"Well you better run now," I said. "Don't want Klaus to catch you."

"He doesn't want to catch me," she said and I frowned at her. "Just like he doesn't want to catch her," Katherine told and grinned at me before leaving the cafe. I waited a few moments, calming myself down before walking back to the apartment. Elena jumped when I opened the door.

"Where did you go?" she asked and I spared her a glance as I walked further into the apartment to find a bathroom. My mum always said to hold my tongue when I was angry. I was just trying to do as she said with ignoring Elena. I locked the door, and examined everything that was in the paper bag. Katherine was the best at executing this terrible idea. She planned the whole thing carefully, and it was just up to me whether I could carry it out.

There was a small perfume, a bunch of bracelets and rings but what caught my eye was an old looking lapis lazuli necklace that belonged to my doppelganger. It wouldn't work on me, but we had planned to carry the plan at night. I placed it carefully inside the paper bag when I heard the door opened and caught two familiar voices. My heart beat faster and I realized I was slightly shaking and leaned myself against the wall, trying to calm myself.

"Do you feel that? Is anybody here?" Klaus, British accented voice asked. Shit. Elena.

"It's been vacant for decades. People must break in all the time. Why'd you bring me here?" I heard Stefan asked.

"Your friend, Liam Grant, the one who drank his wife's blood...I never could figure out why you wanted his name. And then you told me your little secret. It was all part of your special little ritual," Klaus told.

"To write it down," Stefan said.

"And relive the kill...Over and over again," Klaus said. I heard a door creaked opened and believed Klaus had opened the hidden door. I hoped Elena wasn't hiding in there.

"You believe me now?" he asked. Everything was quiet now but then I heard Klaus's footsteps. Shit. If Klaus was observant, he could see some places were dusty and some were not. But I hoped Klaus had better things to do than examining the furniture.

"Look what I found!" I heard Stefan called out and Klaus walked over to him. I sighed in relief. "1918. Single malt."

"My favorite. Let's go and find someone to pair it with," I heard Klaus said and they finally left. I waited for a few minutes, and trust me, patience wasn't one of my virtues.

"Elena?" I called out when I stepped out of the bathroom. She finally came out and based on her face, I knew she had seen Stefan. And he had seen her.

"Finally! I called you an hour ago!" Elena said in frustration as Damon walked in. She placed the vervain dart down and caught the bag that Damon threw at her. We didn't talk about what happened, instead I let her rethink everything collect her thoughts.

"Make yourself presentable. I know where Stefan's going to be tonight," Damon said.

"I told you that I was practically discovered by Klaus and you're worried about what I'm wearing?" Elena asked in disbelief. I became irritated at her words and decided to ignore that. We couldn't 24/7 worried about her, can we?

"I had an hour to realize what a bad idea it was to leave you here alone, process it, and move on," Damon said and looked at Elena. "Are you okay?" he decided to add that and Elena nodded.

"Yeah."

"Okay, good. Get dressed. You're all road-trippy and gross," Damon said and I rolled my eyes.

"So you know where he's going to be?" Elena asked.

"Yes, with Klaus. So I'll distract Klaus and you deal with Stefan," Damon said and Elena turned to me.

"What about you?" she asked, confused. I pursed my lips and nodded at Damon.

"Just tell her," I said. "No! Wait," I said as Damon opened his mouth. "If Damon goes in there, you don't have much time to talk with Stefan," I began.

"Thanks, Cassidy," Damon said dryly and I gave him a smile.

"What?" Elena asked, confused.

"I have things to discuss with Klaus, and I think you'll have more than five minutes if I go in there," I told Elena.

"No, you-you can't!" Elena said and I glared at her. Another Elena Gilbert's trait that ticked me off.

"You don't have to try and protect me, Elena. I know what I can do. I know the risk. I do whatever I want," I told her harshly, and felt my anger bubbling in the surface. "Now why don't you go and get dress," I said with a smile and she stared at me.

"You knew?" she asked Damon and I groaned in frustration.

"Don't worry," Damon said, a little annoyed now too. "If anything happens, I'll be there."

"It's you who we're worried about," I told her and she looked at me. "Can you do this?"

"I can do this," she said.

"Well, get dress," I said.

"Do I look like her?" I asked Damon when we arrived at the bar.

"You might not want to look that nervous," he said and I rolled my eyes.

"I'm not nervous, I'd done this before," I said and took a deep breath. I turned to look at Elena who was hugging herself. "Wish me luck, Elena," I said, slipping into Cassandra's mode.

"You ready?" Damon asked and I smiled gently.

"Yeah," I said. I saw Stefan's and Klaus's backs, having a few drinks and telling stories. Interesting. I held up my hand at Damon, asking him to wait.

"So I'm confused. If we were such great friends, then why do I only know you as the hybrid dick who sacrificed my girlfriend on an altar of fire?" I heard Stefan asked, and smiled a little.

"All good things must come to an end," Klaus said and launched a story in the 20's.

"You compelled me to forget?" Stefan asked.

"It was time for Rebekah and I to move on. Better to have a clean slate," Klaus said.

"But why? You shouldn't have to cover your tracks. Unless you're running from someone," Stefan said smartly.

"Story time's over," Klaus said and I looked at Damon and he nodded at me. I walked into the bar, my high heels clicked on the pavement, announcing my arrival. Both Stefan and Klaus turned around and Stefan straightened up when he saw me.

"Hello Stefan, Niklaus," I said, meeting his blue eyes. My voice was soft, imitating my doppelganger. Stefan narrowed his eyes at me, slightly confused. "Never thought I would see you as a ripper again," I added and he seemed to catch on. This wasn't Vanessa.

"Cassidy?" He questioned.

"My, my, look what have we here," Klaus, accented voice washed over me and I calmed myself, looking up into his blue eyes as he walked over to me. Stefan trailed behind him, like the good wingman he was.

"I've heard that you broke the curse," I said, and let a small smile escaped my lips. I placed a hand on Stefan's arm gently.

"Do you mind if I speak with him for a moment?" I asked him, so un-Vanessa-like and he looked at Klaus.

"Leave us," he ordered and Stefan left the bar to see Damon and Elena.

"It's been a while, love," Klaus said, gesturing me to the stool. I slid next to him and he poured me a glass of scotch.

"You broke the curse," I said carefully, and he smiled, showing me his dimples. How could such a heartless man look so angelic?

"I did," he said simply. I racked my mind, trying to find ways to get him to talk.

"I assume Elijah should be with you," I said softly, averting my eyes from his. He gave me a smile and my heart beat faster. "I heard he was in Mystic Falls," I added.

"He's…a little preoccupied at the moment," Klaus said with a smile and I sent him a knowing look. "Did you miss him?" he asked, placing his large hand on my thigh. I turned to look at him and sucked in a deep breath. He knew.

"Every day," I said softly, barely a whisper.

"Do you know why I didn't kill you?" he asked, leaning to my ear.

"Why?" I asked breathlessly and felt his smirk.

"Because I don't want to," he said and I felt my hair stood, at the chillness of his voice. I remained frozen when he slid from his seat and felt his hand traveled up to my waist, holding me close.

"Why is that?" I asked, trying not to panic.

"You're always so fun to play with," he said, leaning away to meet my eyes. "Isn't that right, Vanessa?"

I remained blank for a moment. I tried to read his eyes, he didn't seem to be angry. He seemed amused.

"What gave me away?" I snapped a little, slipping back into Vanessa. His smile returned.

"Your fear," he said and I narrowed my eyes into slit.

"I'm not afraid of you," I told him.

"Is that so?" he challenged me and I forced myself to keep my eyes on him, not backing away.

"Yes," I answered and he brought his hand to caress my face.

"Whenever I touch you, you jump," he said, an amused smile plastered on his lips.

"Who wouldn't?" I asked, raising an eyebrow at him and he laughed.

"Why are you here, love?" he asked.

"You didn't kill Cassandra," I stated and he smiled.

"No, I didn't," he said and I looked at him pointedly. "What's wrong, love? Felt threatened by Elijah's old lover?" he asked mockingly and I scowled.

"I don't have anything for Elijah," I said.

"I'm sorry for what happened between you two…" he said, not looking sorry at all and I rolled my eyes.

"You made Elijah believed that Cassandra was dead. Why is that?"

"He left me," Klaus shrugged. "Cassandra was his leverage but she is too valuable to be killed that soon. Although I assume I have another one now," he said casually as if he was speaking about the weather.

"I'm not anyone's leverage," I said and quickly leaned back when his hand reached out to my face. Klaus laughed at that and at that moment, I couldn't believe he was the man who killed my aunt.

Aunt Jenna…

I pushed her away from my mind, focusing on him and on my task now. How could I be sitting down, having a drink and talking with my aunt's killer? The man who killed my sister just to break free from a curse? The same man who daggered Elijah without a second thought.

"Oh, relax, love," he said, his laughter had reduced to a large grin. "I just wanted to show you something," he said.

"Open your mind," he said, as he placed his large hand on the side of my head. This was the second time he did this to me and I found it to be rather intimate. Even Elijah never did this to me.

Winds were blowing and fire was everywhere. It was the night of the sacrifice. Klaus's screams reached my ears and I remembered my screams as well. They were painful and filled with agony, echoing like Klaus's. Elijah emerged from the shadows and I felt my heart stopped.

"Elijah," Klaus breathed.

"Hello brother," Elijah said coldly. A moment passed, before Elijah dug into Klaus's chest forcefully, grabbing a hold of his heart. "In the name of our family, Niklaus…"

"I didn't bury them in the sea!" Klaus said as Elijah twisted his heart.

"What?" Elijah asked, taken aback at this new information.

"Their bodies are safe. If you kill me, you'll never find them," Klaus said, trying to bargain for his life.

"Elijah! Don't listen to him!" Stefan shouted, seeing the danger of Elijah backing down from killing his supposed brother.

"Elijah, I can take you to them. I gave you my word…brother," Klaus managed. I watched as Elijah's eyes flickered with hope and I knew he was going to spare him. His family meant the world to him.

"Elijah! You promised us!" Stefan growled and Elijah closed his eyes, taking a deep breath. When he opened his eyes, a look of determination flared in his eyes and Klaus gasped as he felt his heart being pulled as slowly as possible.

Klaus mustered all of his strength and gripped on Elijah's wrist tightly. "If you kill me, you'll kill her," Klaus said, barely a whisper that Elijah almost didn't hear him. But he did and his face paled. He didn't need to be told who it was. Me.

"She's linked to me," Klaus said and Elijah's grip on his heart loosened. A smug smile escaped his lips and he felt himself at ease. He had won. Always be one step-two steps ahead of your enemies.

Elijah turned to look at Stefan and Bonnie. "I'm sorry," he said, before fleeing with Klaus.

I breathed slowly as I tried to comprehend what I had just seen and known. I thought Elijah spared Klaus because he was fool enough to trust him to bring him to his family. I didn't know that he knew I was linked to him.

"Elijah had always kept his word, love. Trust me, he had never broken his promises until that night," Klaus told me and I looked up at him into his blue eyes. His hand was still on my face and we were very close that I could see my reflection in his eyes. He looked so sincere, as if he regretted shoving a dagger into Elijah's heart. Or he regretted doing what he had done. "Love is vampire's greatest weakness," he told me and I felt a bitter smile escaped my lips.

"Yes, it is," I said and I saw the surprised in his face at my agreement. I took a deep breath and looked away, and he retracted his hand. I felt the lump in my throat at the thought of Elijah, my first love. After everything that happened, how can I still love him? I felt betrayed, I didn't think I could trust him again, I hated him, but that feelings remained.

"He never stopped loving her," I said after a moment and I saw Klaus smiled a bitter smile from the corner of my eyes. He reached for the scotch and filled my glass.

"We lived for many centuries, Vanessa," Klaus said and I turned to him, surprised at how he called my name. It was usually 'love' or 'sweetheart' but never my name. "Elijah had held affection for many women, but love was a rare thing," Klaus told.

"What about you?" I asked before I could stop myself and Klaus froze before he downed his drink.

"If you don't love, you don't have leverage. As simple as that," he said and met my eyes. So someone had used the woman he loved as his leverage. And since she wasn't here, I assumed she was dead. Because of him.

"I'm sorry," I offered and he looked at me deeply.

"Now tell me, love," he said, his voice rose in a dangerous tone. "Why are you here?"

"I told you," I said, seeing that he didn't believe me in the first place. I guess the Originals really didn't trust anyone easily. "Katherine asked me a favor. After knowing you didn't kill her sister, she wanted to know what happened."

"Since you asked me so nicely, sure sweetheart," he said with a light smile. He filled his empty again and took a sip. His eyes narrowed into slits, thinking of the past memories. "In 1864, while we were living in New Orleans, a familiar face showed up in our home; Cassandra Petrova or also known as Cassidy Pierce at that time," Klaus said and I narrowed my eyes. Katherine and Cassidy were in Mystic Falls at that time.

"She came to me with valuable information in exchange of her freedom," he told me. "Can you guess what it is?"

A thought came to my mind but I pushed it away. That didn't seem like what Cassidy would have done. That was more of Katherine's famous move. I shook my head.

"In exchange of her freedom, she told me…" Klaus paused for a more dramatic feeling and I refrained myself from rolling my eyes. "of Katerina's whereabouts. I sent my man to Mystic Falls and what she said was true. Katerina was living as Katherine Pierce, under the same roof as my dear rippah," he said and I looked at him, trying to see if he was telling the truth.

"However, as I arrived in Mystic Falls, I found out that she was dead! That vampires were rounded up and burned in a church. How convenient!" Klaus said and gave me a grin. "Little Cassandra said she knew nothing about it and trust me, love. Cassandra wasn't a good actress as you are, so I believed her. She was devastated about her sister's death but she and Elijah had got their happily ever after."

"Let me guess, let me guess!" I feigned enthusiasm and Klaus's lips curled into an amused smile. "They decided to run off together, so as a warning, you killed her."

"More or less," Klaus shrugged.

"There's more to it," I said, narrowing my eyes and Klaus smiled.

"Whenever I did something, everyone believes I did that for myself. But believe me, Cassandra was a poison to Elijah and I merely wanted to cut her off," he said.

"Why didn't you kill her then?" I asked him casually and cringed at how Klaus-like I sounded. "Right, leverage," I muttered to myself.

"You're quite good," he said and I gave him a mocking smile.

"Thanks, I learned from the best," I said, taking a sip of my drink and he chuckled. I gasped when he pushed me against the bar, the glass slipped from my hand and shattered against the floor. I choked as his hand tightened around my neck, cutting my air supply.

"I didn't even realize you were stalling me. Good job, love!" he said darkly and I gasped for air. I was beyond terrified. Like seriously. I helplessly tried to pry his hand off me but it was no use.

"Hands off, mate," I heard Damon said before Klaus was pulled away from me. I fell on my knees and breathed in relief but panicked instantly as things turned ugly. However, a dark-skinned witch interfered, burning the stake that Klaus was about to plunge into Damon's heart.

"Really?" Klaus asked, annoyed.

"Not in my bar. You take it outside," she told him sternly. She then turned to me and looked at me with interest and I gulped, raising to my feet.

"You don't have to negotiate your brother's freedom. When I'm done with him, he won't want to go back," Klaus told Damon and I felt my heart sank. He let go of Damon and turned to me. He looked like he wanted to say something but decided against it and moved further back into the bar.

"Come on," Damon said and I followed him outside. Elena was already in the car, looking sad and depressed. "You okay?" I heard Damon asked as we entered the car.

"Just drive," she said.

When we reached home, I was tired both mentally and physically. Jeremy was watching TV and he craned his neck to look at us. Elena went straight upstairs while I headed to the kitchen.

"Back so soon?" Jeremy asked and I rolled my eyes.

"I had a long day, okay?" I snapped and he narrowed his eyes at me, looking confused.

"No, I'm serious," he said and I could see that he wasn't joking. I closed the fridge door and looked at him.

"What?"

"You said you were going out. Why did you return so soon?" he asked and my jaw dropped.

"What's wrong?" he asked.

"Oh shit! Oh shit!" I muttered and flashed to the front door. Everything was quiet out there and there was nothing that said my doppelganger was here. Except for my brother.

And he had invited her in.

What are your thoughts? I seriously want to hear what you guys really think. Pleaseeeee :)
