A/N: Okay, so I was busy with my tests and I'm so sorry for not updating. And things aren't going that great here. The weather is really hot and dry plus the haze and my cat is sick. His kidneys are swollen and he wouldn't eat anything. And I don't know if you've heard this, but our plane MH370 went missing without a trace and it's been five days. I sincerely ask you readers to pray for the safety of the passengers and the crews and hope that the plane will return home soon.
On a lighter note, I was really impressed by the latest episode of both TVD and TO. Elijah's vampire face is just super amazing, don't you think? And did anyone see Nate's (Kol) Instagram update with Dr Wes? And Nate in PLL with an American accent?! Haha, alright. Enough with this, I hope you enjoy the chapter! Warning: VanessaxRebekah! JK ^^
Chapter 21: Smells Like Teen Spirit
"No, Katherine. I can't ditch the first day of school just to meet the famous vampire hunter," I told her as I applied my lipstick.
"I'm bored," she drawled. I could hear the boredom in her voice even from the speaker of my phone and I rolled my eyes.
"And stupid," I added as I fixed my hair.
"I'm sorry, what was that?" she asked.
"Oh come on, you want to wake a vampire that hunts vampires?" I asked her and grabbed my phone to check on the time.
"He will kill Klaus," Katherine said. "Although I doubt that now," she said with a sigh and I raised an eyebrow at her although she couldn't see it.
"Why?" I asked and pursed my lips when I noticed my red cardigan. "Red cardigan with blue top. Sounds better?" I asked her as I compared it with my white cardigan.
"Yeah, go with that," she told and I slipped the white cardigan off of me before tossing it on the bed.
"What's wrong with Mikael? He's not Van Helsing enough?" I asked, getting back on the topic as I put on the red cardigan. "Red really does look good on me," I said aloud and I could see Katherine rolling her eyes at me.
"Did you even finish reading the book?" she asked and I laughed.
"I did, okay? You gave it to me like what, last year?" I asked and narrowed my eyes as I tried to remember.
"You said it was boring," she interjected and I gasped.
"No, I did not!" I denied. "It got really interesting after Lucy fell sick," I said and shook my head. "Okay, we're straying from the topic. Again," I said sternly and she chuckled.
"How's Stefan?" she asked and I pursed my lips.
"I'll pay him a visit before school," I told her and slung my bag over my shoulder before heading downstairs. "Klaus skipped town, wait-I told you that already."
"As soon as I wake Van Helsing, I'll come back, Klaus will come back too, and Mikael will kill him," she said and before sighing for the umpteenth time. I remembered something and cleared my throat.
"Hey, did you…find out? About your sister?" I asked her carefully. She fell silent for a while and I waited patiently for her answer.
"She was in New Orleans, yeah," Katherine replied and I bit my lower lip.
"But Klaus could be lying, you know?" I said. "He just wants you to feel betrayed."
"Whatever," she said, asking me silently to drop the subject.
"I still don't think it's a good idea that we wake Mikael up," I told her.
"He's supposed to be able to kill Klaus, and I'm sure he will. This is our best shot," she said.
"He's a vampire hunter," I said, desperately trying to emphasize my point. "And guess what? We are vampires!" My hands flew up in frustration.
"I know that," she said and I rolled my eyes. I heard Jeremy's footsteps coming down and turned my attention back to Katherine.
"Hey, I need to go," I said and she hummed. I quickly hung up my phone and turned to Jeremy. "You okay?"
"I'm fine," he said and I pursed my lips, displeased.
"I'm gonna kill Damon," I told him and he laughed slightly. But his laughter wasn't directed to me. "Is Anna here?" I asked, and he tensed. I raised an eyebrow at him, asking him to tell me. His eyes darted behind me for a second before they returned to mine again.
"No, she's not-yeah, she's here," he said and shook his head, trying to clear his head. Even when we were kids, Jeremy could never lie to me. Not when I'm looking at him like a hawk.
"Morning Anna," I said, glancing over my shoulder and smile at the air.
"She said hi back," Jeremy stated awkwardly and I smiled at him. I had never seen him with Anna, hell, I'd never met Anna but I could see he still loves her. She died, and they didn't break up. I felt sorry for him. I bit back a sigh, wondering which side to take. Your brother or your friend?
"Hey, talk to me if you need me, okay?" I asked him softly and he nodded.
"Sure, I'll see you later, okay?"
"Bye," I called out and sighed. "Ah shit," I said as I remembered I actually wanted to ask him more about ghosts and how can they interact with us. There was certainly a ghost trying to help us from letting Klaus kill Elena. I wondered who and why. Perhaps it was Isobel. I thought of Elijah out of the blue and laughed darkly to myself. "Always and forever," I said and shook my head, grabbing my bag as I walked to the Salvatore Boarding House.
I certainly didn't expect to see what I was seeing. Stefan was relaxing on the couch with a bunch of sluts sorority girls were on the floor, playing Twisters.
"Hey, the two brunettes on the staircase owe me a Persian rug," Damon said and I rolled my eyes. Damon was the only guy that I met to really care about his house. He was just as worse as my mum.
"You mean, they owe us a Persian rug? It's my house, too, brother," Stefan said coolly. "Oh! Would you like a spin?" he asked and I cleared my throat.
"Am I interrupting?" I asked, still couldn't hide my disbelief at the scene in front of me.
"Not at all, care to join us?" Stefan asked cheerfully and I pursed my lips in distaste.
"No but thank you," I said dryly. This made him chuckled and I turned to Damon, asking him to explain what the hell was going on.
"So this is what Klaus had in mind when he compelled you to protect Elena?" Damon asked and I turned to look at Stefan.
"These ladies are helping me be all that I can be," he replied simply and I rolled my eyes. Someone knocked on the door and I prayed it wasn't Elena. She certainly didn't need to see this.
"Where's Stefan?" a familiar female voice said. I turned around to see Rebekah walked in with shopping bags in her hands.
"Who the hell are you?" Damon asked.
"That's Rebekah," I piped up and she whipped her head at me.
"Vanessa, right?" she asked and I nodded my head. She then noticed Stefan and complained. "He left me here. My brother actually left me here."
"Oh, I'm sorry. Your tone implies that I'm actually supposed to care," Stefan said.
"You're Klaus's sister?" Damon asked, having missed the entire party last night.
"Pleasure, I'm sure. Which one's my room?" she asked.
"You're not staying here," Stefan told her. She then turned to Damon and he didn't say anything.
"Rude. Both of you. I'll see to it myself," she said haughtily and went upstairs.
"So I guess she's staying here," Stefan said with a chuckle and Damon nodded, although not looking slightly amused with the situation.
When I arrived at school, I quickly tried to spot my sister or my friends and I saw them entering the restroom with Tyler. Frowning, I followed them inside.
"What's going on?" I asked, almost tensely.
"Chill out. It was just a blood bag," Tyler said, trying to calm everyone in there.
"From where?" Caroline asked.
"Rebekah hooked me up," he told.
"Rebekah? And what are you even talking to her for?" Caroline asked, and I could see she was both jealous and disturbed that her boyfriend was talking to the female Original.
"Klaus told her to keep a watch on me. Protect his new asset," Tyler said, amused.
"His what? Why are you amused by this?" Caroline asked frustrated.
"Easy care," I said and Tyler grinned at me.
"I'm his first successful hybrid, Caroline. Don't you think that's the tiniest bit awesome?" he asked and I raised an eyebrow at him.
"Oh, wow! I cannot believe you just said that!" Caroline remarked in disbelief and Elena looked at me pointedly.
"So, we're going to go," she said and I nodded.
"Yeah, good luck!" I said and followed her trail out of the restroom. She stopped in her tracks and with my super reflex I stopped myself from bumping into her.
"Hello Elena," Stefan said with a smile and turned to me. "Vanessa," he acknowledged and I narrowed my eyes at him.
"What are you doing here?" Elena asked, clearly surprised.
"What do you mean? I'm going back to school. Go Timberwolves!" he mocked and I rolled my eyes.
"What? Why?" Elena questioned and I shut my eyes. Did she really have to ask that? She knew she didn't want to hear the answer.
"Klaus wants me to keep an eye on you. I'm just doing what I'm told," he said indifferently.
"Okay, that's enough," I said, watching as Elena's face fell. "We're gonna be late," I said, shooting death glares at Stefan as I led Elena away. Stefan grabbed her arm and I turned around.
"Class is this way," he said with a smirk.
"Let go of me, Stefan," Elena said.
"Elena, do you think I want to be a senior for the hundredth time? No. But if I don't have a choice in the matter, then neither do you," he said.
"Let her go, Stefan," I told him warningly and he looked up at me.
"Or what?" he asked, clearly challenging me. If everyone wasn't looking at us right now, I might have attacked him. Alaric suddenly stepped in and to my surprise, no-humanity Stefan pushed Ric against the locker without a second thought.
"You're not gonna want to get in my way. Okay Ric?" he asked, and smiled threateningly. "I will see you guys in history," he said, before leaving.
"You okay?" I asked Ric as we ignored the students and headed to his classroom.
"What the hell is he doing here?" Alaric asked.
"Klaus compelled him to watch over me. Apparently I'm one of Klaus's assets now that my blood is the only way to create a hybrid," Elena explained.
"Now he's a bodyguard?" he asked.
"Apparently so," I muttered and Elena looked at me.
"Whatever he is, he's not Stefan," she said. The bell rang and we held back a sigh. "Look, his being here is not good for any of us. We have to do something."
Students came pouring in and I followed Elena to our seats. I watched as Stefan walked in and went to the seat next to Elena.
"You're in my seat," he said and I rolled my eyes. He gave Elena a smile as he sat next to her and I shook my head. This was so not Stefan.
"Welcome back, seniors. Let's turn our brains back on, starting with this country's original founders...the Native Americans," Alaric began. An unexpected blonde walked in and I stared at her, clearly surprised.
"What about the Vikings?" Rebekah interrupted and took a seat.
"There's no evidence that Viking explorers actually settled in the United States. Who are you?" Alaric asked.
"My name's Rebekah. I'm new. And history's my favorite subject," Rebekah said charmingly and I suppressed a groan. You'd got to be kidding me.
"Has anyone seen Dana?" Blair asked as she noticed her absence and the image of Stefan ripping her throat out flashed in my mind.
"Nope," I said to her and continued to stretch.
"Sounds like you have an opening on the squad," Rebekah said, standing between Caroline and I and began stretching.
"It's for teenage girls, sweetheart," I retorted and she smirked at me, amused.
"You speak like Nik," she commented and I fell quiet, realizing it as well.
"What are you doing?" Caroline asked, trying not to make a scene. Rebekah ignored her completely and I almost laughed, watching their exchange. "Hey, Hey! You can't just come here and infiltrate all of our lives."
"I'm only interested in yours. Your spunk, your popularity," Rebekah said, pushing Caroline's buttons. She whipped her head to look at the boys practicing football and turned her attention back to Caroline. "Maybe even your boyfriend."
"Okay," I said loudly, getting in between Caroline and Rebekah. "Let's start!" I shouted to the ladies. I noticed Caroline left and turned my attention back to Rebekah. She made a few impressive cartwheels before ending it with a split. The girls cheered for her and I noticed Caroline glaring from afar.
"How was I?" Rebekah asked proudly as she walked to me and I made an impressed face.
"How do you do that after being in a coffin for 90 years?" I asked and she looked at me, her brows furrowed in confusion.
"Who told you that?" she asked, not angrily but surprised that I knew the detail. My mood went down instantly as I thought of him. Elijah.
That night we grouped in Alaric's classroom, getting through the plan to take Stefan down.
"I'll lure Stefan away from the bonfire. Then when he's distracted..." Elena turned to Alaric who nodded.
"I'll shoot him," he said with confidence.
"Can't Bonnie just ju-ju him or something?" Damon asked.
"I'm trying to keep Bonnie out of this. I don't trust that Stefan won't hurt her," Elena said and turned to Caroline. "Caroline, are you covered?" she asked.
"Yes! I will make sure that the old Forbes jail cell is prepped and ready," Caroline said.
"We're forgetting a key player here. Rebekah? Wherever Stefan goes, the blond ponytail tends to follow," Damon said dryly.
"Which is why it's your job to keep her away," Elena told.
"How? She's an Original. Last time I checked, we're out of daggers," Damon retorted.
"So then preoccupy her with your charm," Elena said.
"Might have better luck finding the dagger," Ric interjected and both Caroline and I laughed.
"Which is why I'll be there," I said and Damon narrowed his eyes at me. "In case your charms won't work," I said and he rolled his eyes at me.
"What can you do, huh?" he asked and I laughed, knowing that I had hurt his ego.
"She's lonely, maybe she needs a friend more than…" I trailed off, not really knowing how to phrase it. Damon smirked and I rolled my eyes.
"Sorry I'm late. What's going on?" Tyler asked as he arrived.
"We need you to raid your mom's vervain supply. Enough to keep Stefan down for a while," Elena told.
"You can't do that to Stefan," he said and I looked at him.
"What?"
"Why not?" Caroline asked.
"Trust me, Tyler. It's in his best interest," Elena said.
"Yeah, it's not in Klaus's," he said and I straightened up.
"But Klaus is the bad guy, Tyler," Caroline said, a little dumbfounded at her boyfriend's behavior. "You know, why are you acting like some freaky, hybrid, slave minion?"
"Uh-oh," Damon said as he slid down the desk.
"What?" Ric snapped but Damon ignored him, watching Tyler intently.
"Klaus made me who I am, Caroline. I owe him everything," Tyler said, defending Klaus.
"Oh boy," Damon groaned.
"Okay, can we cool it on the commentary, please?" Caroline asked, clearly annoyed.
"I'm just going to go," Tyler said and turned around. Damon flashed towards him and stabbed him with vervain dart and Tyler fell to the floor, unconscious.
"What are you doing?!" Caroline asked hysterically.
"He's been sired," Damon stated.
"Sired?" I asked, having heard of the word for the first time.
"He feels loyal to Klaus because Klaus's blood created him," Damon explained.
"Loyal how?" Elena asked.
"He'll seek acceptance from his master. It's really rare. But maybe not so much in hybrids," he said.
"So how do I fix him?" Caroline asked worriedly.
"Get a new boyfriend," he replied simply.
I watched Rebekah and Damon from afar, keeping an eye out on everyone. Elena was doing a great job with Stefan and I was just having a couple of drinks. Who would have thought life could change that easily? Last year, I was just a normal, popular, cheerleader and most importantly, human. Then I died and became a vampire. And fell in love with an Original, tried to stop Klaus from killing Elena, and now we were having a bonfire with his sister.
"Hi." I turned around to see one of guys in football team, smiling at me. I flashed him a smile and tilted my head to the side. I didn't even have to go and find someone for dinner, I thought, amused. "I'm Dan," he said and I rolled my eyes, a smile escaped my lips.
"I know who you are," I said flirtatiously and he grinned. Not wanting to waste more time, I looked into his eyes, compelling him, "You're not going to feel any pain, just the pleasure of it."
He looked at me blankly and I pushed him against the tree and tiptoed to meet his lips. Nothing. There wasn't even lust or pleasure there. I felt nothing as I kissed one of the hottest guys in the school. My kiss with Elijah flared in my mind and I growled softly, remembering how passionate both of us were. It was upsetting, how I still thought of him. How I missed his touch and longed for his kiss. I trailed my lips down his neck, Elijah's neck, and felt my fangs lowered and my face changed. I bit his neck, careful not to make a mess out of it and drank.
Blood from vein tasted completely different than blood bags. And I appreciated the warmth, the life and the sweet taste of blood as I let it flowed in my mouth. Ryan? Jake? What was his name again? He moaned as I pressed myself against him, his hands stroked my thigh and upper body, lost in ecstasy from the compulsion. I imagined it was Elijah's rough hand that was gripping my thigh, that it was his body that was pressed against mine, that it was his touch that burned into my skin and I moaned, reliving that one night.
"Drinking from humans, out in the open!" Rebekah said cheerfully and I felt her presence behind me. I shut my eyes in annoyance at the interruption and reluctantly, I pulled away from the human's neck. I looked at her, wiping my lips from the blood.
"What do you want?" I asked and tried to keep my tone anything but hostile, and she smiled warningly at me.
"What are you lots up to?" Rebekah asked, crossing her arms defensively. I raised an eyebrow at her, before turning to look at the spot where she and Damon were sitting a couple minutes ago. Sure enough, Damon was on the ground, groaning.
"What do you mean?" I asked casually and she narrowed her eyes at me. "I'm on vervain, so don't waste your time," I said as soon as I saw the look on her face. The same look the Originals had before they tried to compel people. "Damon's just being Damon. Flirting with new girl isn't exactly a new thing," I said with a shrug.
"Why are you not with your sister?" she asked accusingly. What? Am I her bodyguard or something? Thought it was Stefan's job, I thought sarcastically. Instead I turned around to look at the guy pointedly to answer her question. Rebekah pursed her lips, displeased at how I managed to dismiss her accusation.
"Wanna have a bite?" I asked her and she stood straighter, her blue eyes looking at me sharply.
"No," she replied and I rolled my eyes, although I laughed at her.
"You Originals, always think others have ulterior motives against you," I said.
"I don't trust any of you," she said and I tilted my head to the side.
"Look Rebekah, you're new, you don't know anyone. High school without friends? Sucks," I said and looked at her, keeping my gaze open and honest, that she could trust me. She looked down to her nails, considering my words and my intentions.
"I've always preferred you over your sister," she said, trying to sound indifferent at what I had just offered her. I rolled my eyes and looked at Rebekah. She didn't seem that bad. She seemed arrogant, hell, perhaps she was. But I saw the walls and façade she put to keep everyone out because…because she had been hurt too many times.
"First rule of friendship, don't compare your friend with her doppelgangers," I told her and she gave me an innocent smile.
"Alright, sorry," she apologized lightly and I rolled my eyes. "No, actually I am sorry," she told me seriously and I raised an eyebrow questioningly at her as I sipped on the beer. "You and my brother…didn't you-"
"Let's not talk about him," I cut her off and downed the rest of my beer.
"Alright, sorry," Rebekah said and I looked at her. She was actually truly sorry and I knew that perhaps, in that her long life, she had been compared by her lovers once or twice. I pushed any thoughts that had Elijah in it, but it was too late. He cared for me, perhaps, but it was only because I looked like her. And damn, it hurt.
"I never know you could apologize," I joked, and Rebekah rolled her eyes, slipping back into the cold, indifferent, bitchy Rebekah.
"I'm not Nik," she said and I laughed.
"Tell me, what's it like to have a brother like him?" I asked, trying to strike a conversation that had nothing to do with Elijah. Rebekah snorted in response, making me laughed slightly.
"He's a pain in the arse, very controlling and manipulative…but he's my brother," she said and I smiled.
"That's sweet," I told her and she narrowed her eyes at me, trying to see if I was actually ridiculing her.
"You know, I'd watched you for a short time," she said, sipping on the beer before meeting my eyes again. "I can read you easily, know your likes and dislikes," she said.
"And…?"
"I just never thought you would go for Elijah," she said and I threw my head back, groaning. Well I can read you easily too, Rebekah. You are a very nosy person. Really.
"Unlike you I haven't lived for that long," I said. "So I guess this is just nothing. This feeling that I felt is just nothing and over time, it would disappear," I said aloud, and realized what a terrible liar I was. Damn, since when did I lie so badly?
"It's not that easy," she said and I smiled sadly at her.
"I'm a realist. I know and aware that Elijah's…affection was only because of Cassandra. I'm not that stupid to cling onto that small affection that he had over me."
Rebekah stared at me for a while, although her eyes were far away, reminiscing something else. "Elijah," Rebekah said and stopped for a moment. "He's a good man, noble-"
"That's where everybody got it wrong," I told her. "Everyone thinks I love-loved him because he's the good and noble one but it's not. Elijah betrayed me, twice, broke his word, attempted to kill me, tortured me for information," I said and watched as Rebekah's blue eyes widened slightly in surprise. "I'd seen his dark side and I fell in love with it. It's infuriating and-" I stopped and sighed, realizing I was actually pouring all my frustration out. "I guess I had too many beers," I said, creating an excuse.
"Okay, how long has that blonde dating Tyler?" Rebekah asked, changing the topic and I laughed.
"Forget him, Rebekah," I said, still laughing. "He's with Caroline," I said, and refrained myself from asking her about sire bond. Rebekah scoffed and glanced around.
"Then suggest me a guy," she said and I looked at her, in disbelief.
"Um, alright," I said, flushing slightly as I realized she was serious and what she meant by suggesting. "I guess you could take him," I nodded at Dan who was holding his neck, his green eyes blank. It wasn't bleeding severely but I could still smell the blood. "Or that guy, his name is Trent," I said, pointing at the handsome black haired guy with great physical body.
"Hmph," Rebekah said, unimpressed.
"Well, sex with humans isn't as good as with vampires," I commented.
"Oh," she said, her blue eyes gleaming in excitement as she looked at me. "Did you sleep with Damon? Or was it Stefan?"
"Ew! That's very, very gross!" I exclaimed, shuddering at the thought. "Ugh," I shook my head. "Both of them are in love with my sister, so no. Not planning to," I said, and shuddered again. I glanced at her and pursed my lips. "I suppose you could try Damon, although I doubt he'll sleep with you after you stabbed him with a marshmallow stick."
"Did you sleep with my brother?" Rebekah asked, raising her eyebrow suggestively.
"No!" I said and shook my head at her incredulously.
"Oh really?" she asked and I rolled my eyes.
"Although we did make out a little, it was good," I said to her and her jaw dropped.
"I did not have to hear that!" she groaned and I laughed.
"You asked for it," I told her and she shuddered. I looked at her, and realized that I was actually having fun. It'd been a while, really. Since all summer Caroline was with Tyler and I didn't hang out with Bonnie that much and my sister was busy trying to find her boyfriend. It was really nice to have a new girl friend.
"Alright then," she said, glancing at Trent. "I'll see you back at the Salvatore's," she said and I raised an eyebrow questioningly at her. "There's no way you're finishing it at home," she said, nodding at Dan, and raked his body with such a deep thought. I watched as she dipped her fingers at his bleeding neck and tasted it before turning to look at me. "Perhaps I'll join you," she said with a smirk and I chuckled.
"I'll be waiting," I replied without missing a beat and heard Rebekah laughed as she walked over to Trent and his friends.
