Shattered ones.

Enigma was a nervous person, but she had never been this nervous before.

She stood awkwardly in the middle of her father's control room, staring at the many computers that hung around the central computer, all showing parts of the city or challenge rooms, some of them were already being built while others had wiring that needed to be fixed up and plans to measure out.

Suddenly she heard his footsteps again and she turned to face him, he still held that icy look on his face.

"This is… wow…" she whispered looking back at the room.

A smirk slid on his face. "Well, of course it is. Would you expect anything less of me?"

"No… no I wouldn't," Enigma gave a small smile before walking around the room like she was in a dream.

Edward watched her as she ran her fingers over the keyboards, over the table and the mouse before pushing a strand of her hair out of her face.

"Do you like it?" he questioned.

"I… it's amazing, I never imagined anything like this…" she gestured to the room around, her eyes wide and round.

He chuckled slightly. "Really? I must admit, I expected your reaction to all this to be different."

"Oh I had my hissy fit at Jessica… oh god, oh god!"

"What is it?"

"Jessica, Strange has got her!"

"You wouldn't be talking about Jessica Turner?"

She gave a slow nod.

"Oh god."

"Yeah! Strange said he wanted to talk to her, give her therapy session or something because she'd had a mental brake!"

"If anything, he'll make it worse."

It was dark in the room, quiet and peaceful, except for the light drips of water and the small cackles of laughter from the corner of the room.

"Miss Turner?"

The laughter stopped. "Jester, Strange. Get it right… I'd hate to spell check you, drawing the dotted line is a real pain when the words are said in mid air."

There was a long pause. "You will be placed in Arkham City now."

"Oh goody, I do so love murder and chaos. Hey, maybe I'll see Eddie!"

"I doubt that Miss Turner, no one has seen the Mister Nigma since he was placed in there."

"Doesn't mean I won't see him and it's Jester, Strange!" she jumped at the door and glared at him. "You need to get it right."

"Guards, seize Miss Turner and place her in Arkham City," Strange said as he walked away, allowing the guards to reach her and take her to Arkham City.

As she was being dragged Jester stared up at the ceiling smiling as she watched the world shoot past her, all the lights where a blur as she was dragged and she soon burst out into laughter.

"Be quiet, prisoner."

"Does anybody know my name in this place? I am really beginning to think they don't."

The doors where opened and she was shoved into the cold air of Arkham City, she sighed and let the air blow her wild black and white hair around. Since being relaxed from Arkham she'd let it grow from the pixie cut to give herself a softer look, but in Arkham City, soft was not called for.

She wrapped her arms around herself to keep her warm before she began to treck through the streets towards a place that would be safe, she knew Park Row fairly well and the court house wasn't too far from here.

She'd bet her money that was where Two Face would take over when he was brought in here, but he wasn't yet. In fact, a lot of the inmates still had to be realised into the city.

She suddenly began to laugh at the absurdity of it all.

She was the daughter of the very man she hated more then anything in the world.

Did he know it was his own daughter he was pushing into that vat? Did he know and not care?

She stopped laughing and frowned.

If he had, then he was not a very good dad, in fact he would need a few parenting courses, though, either way, this whole thing was a pretty good joke on her.

She burst out laughing as she stumbled into the court house, still laughing.

The she stopped.

"Thirty days has September, April, June and November….. little Jester," Julian Day stood in front of her and smiled. "How nice to see you again."

"You killed my mother."

"M is for the murderous look she gave me, O meant she was only weak and old, T is for her tears as she fought me, H is for her heart that I now hold, E is for eyes swiftly dimming, R is for rot and rotting she will be. Put them together and they spell 'Mother' a words that means only death to me."

"You destroyed my childhood!" Jester screamed.

Julian smiled. "Your mother fought bravely little girl. She protected both you and your sister rather well. Not that I was going to kill you, it wasn't the right date-,"

"Shut up about dates!"

"They are important."

"Only to you, Day," Jester snarled. "They're worthless little numbers to everyone else, a way to give people a sense of order over chaos of days and arrangement, that's all a date is! It's nothing but a number on a page!"

"You do not understand the importance of dates, but I shall teach you."

"Come anywhere near me and my boss, my father and my big brother will be after you! I suggest you don't!"

"Is this fear little girl? And so close to Christmas too. Are you forgetting, Halloween is the date you are supposed to be afraid. It is a pity the Scarecrow will not be here to celebrate it this year, he always did the day justice."

Jester growled and turned away from him, marching towards the door. "If I see you again, I'll kill you."

"Don't kill me on my birthday."

Jester slammed the door and ran away.

Her chest felt heavy, her head hurt and she couldn't stop laughing.

She found it funny. She found all of it to be the most hilarious thing she had ever come across.

"Stupid little freak! What the hell are you doing here?!"

Jester grinned at the thug before picking up a bottle from a dumpster. "Well, didn't you know? I'm a little off my rocker. It's not good at all, but to quote a friend of mine, we're all mad here!"

In a lightning flash movement she'd broken the bottle and launched herself at the thug, tackling him to the ground before ramming the broken bottle in his face and then jammed it in his neck, giggling before stopping and getting off him.

She stared at her scarlet covered hands, the blood soaked them as much as it soaked the body.

She stared at them before she burst into laughter and then she saw her reflection and she paused.

She looked like an idiot, she didn't look like Jester.

Jester grabbed the broken bottle, before she grabbed at her hair and held it taught, then she began to hack at her hair with the bottle, the white stands becoming stained crimson as she cut at her hair.

When she was done she jammed the bottle back in his throat before she began to laugh again.

Then there was a shadow over her.

"Jester," there was a deep rooted sigh and Jester giggled even more before turning to see Two Face, the grin that split her face was predatory and evil, the blood and ragged hair only made it worse. "What have you done?" he whispered.

"Harvey? It's so good to see you, how've you been?" Jester asked brightly.

"We've been good Jester, what about you?"

Jester giggled. "Been better, where are you off to?"

"Court House."

"I wouldn't go there, Calendar man is there."

"We know. We're taking it from him."

Jester burst into a fit of laughter. "Oh to be the fly on the wall when that happens, well I wish I could be there Harv' but I better get going, gotta make sure boss j man is okay, ya know what I mean?"

"No."

Jester smirked before skipping away. "Yeah didn't think you would somehow."

Edward didn't worry. Oh no he didn't worry at all, because there was nothing to worry about, obviously. Edward wasn't worried in slightest.

He paused in his pacing and glared at nothing.

Edward was very worried and this annoyed him.

He was worried over the brat of black and white Dalmatian looking kid who couldn't spell or write to save her life.

Why was he worried? He never worried about anyones wellbeing other then his own. Maybe Mist's wellbeing could be put in there too…. and Enigma of course… maybe even Jonathan..?

Okay that was going too far.

He stood still for a moment tapping his chin thought. Where would the brat go? Presumably she didn't talk with Joker anymore, not after what happened at the Asylum. Plus Jester was a sane citizen, she shouldn't even be here in the first place.

There was a groan from the couch next to him and Edward's gaze shifted to the figure that was lying on it asleep.

He frowned slightly and wondered over taking in the sight of Enigma curled up and asleep.

Enigma wasn't supposed to be here either.

What was Strange up to? He couldn't just bring in whoever he wanted and place them in Arkham City… could he?

Edward shook his head. The thought was ludicrous. No one could do that, you'd have to be crazy to even think you could…

Then again Strange wasn't in his right mind now was he?

"Have you found her?"

Edward gave an undignified yelp and span around to see Enigma sitting up, staring at him with hopeful eyes.

He knew who she was talking about.

"No. Are you certain Strange still has her?"

Enigma frowned. "I don't know anymore. She was taken away and I was knocked unconscious."

"Well, at least you're here and safe. I won't have to worry about your mother," Edward muttered as he walked back to his computers.

Enigma folded him, a confused expression on her face. "My mother?"

Edward sighed and nodded.

"Why would you be scared of my mother?"

"Hell hath no fury then a woman's scorn."

"That didn't answer my question."

"You want the honest truth? You're mother is a very scary woman when she is angry."

Enigma laughed. "Mum's not that scary when she's angry."

Edward turned to his daughter's smirking face. "You obviously haven't made er angry, merely slightly annoyed."

He turned back to his computers and his eyes scanned over all the screens till he suddenly stopped on one that was just outside the entrance to the Joker's headquarters.

It was Jest- Jessica, she was sneaking inside with a smirk pulling at her face.

"What are you up to my little agent of chaos?" Edward murmured as he began to tap at the keys.

"Have you found her?"

"Yes… but she appears to be up to something…" Edward trailed off as she wondered towards one of his challenge rooms, dressed in her costume carrying weapons as she wondered over to a gargoyle before she paused and looked right at the camera.

"Hey Eddie," she said with a wave. "Mind giving me a work out?" she contented as she hooked a thumb towards the challenge room where some of his men were wondering around with guns, all poised for the bat… but he wasn't here now.

It wouldn't hurt to entertain the child, make sure she was up to it.

A smirk crossed his face and he sat down at his seat and grabbed the microphone.

This was going to be… interesting.

"What's black and white and dead all over?" he announced causing the thugs to look slightly panicked at the sound of his voice. "Listen closely cretins, it seems my little sister has come to play. Prove to her I'm better."

The thugs seemed to be laughing amongst themselves at the thought of a child trying to beat them.

"Is she really his sister?" one of them muttered as he strutted.. yes he was strutting across the walk way already full of confidence.

"Heaven forbid if she really was my real sister. I would of killed myself years ago," Edward murmured and Enigma laughed before she took a seat next to him.

"That little brat's had this coming from the start," another one growled. Obviously Jester had done something to him previously which meant this was going to be far more exciting.

"Jester? Seriously?" one giggled as he paused next to a wall that had obviously seen better days. "She's just a kid playing dress up."

Suddenly there was an explosion and thug who had stated that snide remark against the girl was sent flying.

Edward sighed and rubbed the bridge of his nose in exasperation. "Try not to make too much of a mess Jester. Do you know how hard it is to clean henchmen off walls?"

The thugs began to panic a little.

They scattered out after finding the body of their previous compandre and where now running around, guns aimed at every direction.

"How'd she do it? I thought she was just a kid."

"Look we can't worry about that, we need to find her!" another shouted back at him.

"Was, was that meant to scare me?"

Edward watched with amusement as Jester took out a thug as silently as a summer's breeze and then she disappeared in the shadows

"Really? That's the best you could do Jester? I expected more flare from a miniature Joker," Edward chuckled as he watched the thugs panic there was only four of them left now, no wonder they were panicking.

Edward wasn't sure if it was because of what he had said or if Jester was bored because she then jumped out of no where, used her yo-yo to wrap around the guys neck before she pulled him towards her and spin kicked, knocking him out and then she off to the shadows once more, hiding in a grate.

Edward glared at the image of the unconscious thug on the ground and he grabbed the micro phone in frustration.

"She's taking you fools out like it's nothing but a light work out! Find her!"

He watched as the grate lifted and a pair of jade green eyes looked up at the camera followed by a smile which the cheshire cat would be envious of.

A thug wondered near the grate and Jester leaped out smashing his head against the wall before she ran off once again towards the stairs and climbed up to the ladder and hid behind a box.

"So, you two are the only ones left? How unfortunate for me to have to rely on such fools to end a girl, who's clearly more intellectually gifted then yourselves."

"She's good," Enigma muttered.

"Yes she is but…" Edward frowned slightly.

"What is it?"

"There's something off. She doesn't seem… quite like herself."

Jester smacked the last one down and pulled the metal pipe from him sacking it down on top of the thug as many times before exhaustion took over and she stumbled away from the body of the thug, leaning heavily against the wall.

"Is she okay?" Enigma muttered.

"I don't think she is."

They watched as Jester sank to her knees with her back against the wall breathing heavily before she grabbed at her skull and shook her head many times.

Something was seriously wrong.

"We need to help her!" Enigma shouted.

"And do what?" Edward questioned the girl. "Niether you nor I could help her, even if we wanted to. We do not know how to help."

"Well let's find out."

"Patience, Enigma."

"Patience!" Enigma screamed as she glared at him. "This isn't patience, this is staling because you don't really want to help! You don't want your pride to be hurt so you'll risk probably the only friend you have left's life to protect it!"

"Don't be absurbed!" Edward growled. "It is foolish to even think you have friends in this game, Enigma! You don't. Both myself and Jester understand that if the chance was given to us, we would sell each other out the first chance we got. Our… friendship as you call it, is non existent! There is no such thing as friendship in this life."

"Only favours. That is all this is. I owe the child and I always give what I owe to my companions."

Enigma gave him glare. "You do have a friendship!" she snarled. "No matter what you say. Your friendship is different to most, it's…" she paused before smiling slightly. "It's shattered, because you both are shattered people. Your reflections are broken, you both are made of broken parts and you understand that about each other so you became friends. You formed a shattered friendship, a broken friendship."

"Be quiet girl. You do not understand this, but how could you? I presume you've had a nice childhood correct?"

Enigma nodded.

"I and Jester did not. Our childhood was broken, a waist of space, it was not really needed since we never had it, in other words, Enigma," Edward growled as he stood before the girl. "I have no meaning for the word 'childhood' no such thing exists for myself." he laughed bitterly. "You say Jester and I are shattered but what you fail to understand is… all of us rogues are 'shattered' as you put it."

"You gave in," Enigma whispered. "You took the easier way out."

"It was easier to hate the world and punish it after what happened to me, I'll admit that," Edward whispered.

"And here I thought you liked a challenge," Enigma bit out glaring at him.

"When I was younger I did or at least I think I did. So hard to remember what I truly wanted back then. But at the time it all seemed so clear but I suppose… I've lost who I was."

"Why?"

"What?"

"Why do you this now, what's reason?"

Edward span around and glared at her before turning back to the computers.

Enigma gave a small smile. "That's what I thought. There is no reason, it's just easier to hate everyone and blame them for the pain then except the fact that the reason it's still hurting you is because you're not letting it go. In other words, it's your fault you're still hurting."

"It's all their fault!" Edward roared and glaring down at his daughter. "If they had listened to me, if they had been nice, appreciated me then I wouldn't of-!"

"So my mother wasn't good enough?"

"No!" Edward snapped at her. "You're taking this the wrong way!"

"I'm taking it the right way which is non of this is enough! You have no reason to do any of this!"

"There is a reason!"

"But you can't tell it me because you don't know yourself! You've lost your way!"

"Because I can't see past the darkness, Enigma!"

Enigma paused and blinked at him.

"It's dark in my head, in my imagination. There is no light. Except a green light hidden in places where the darkness can not touch."

"Green is the colour of envy," Enigma straightened herself and gave him her best glare. "A fitting colour for you."

"Maybe it is," Edward gave a breath laugh. "Maybe it is…"

"Is that why you tried to save Jester from it?"

Edward gave a small smile. "I don't know. I guess I felt sorry for the girl. Not that it matters now. She's lost, always has been."

"Hope remains. She sees you as her hope, I can tell."

"Forgive me, Enigma. But I am hardly a symbol of hope," Edward chuckled, twirling his cain.

"Maybe not to you, but you are to her," Enigma glanced at the screen. "She needs you, Dad. I'll be fine here, you know it and I know it. It's Jester who needs your help."

Edward glanced back at the screen to look at the girl who sat in the corner staring at the ceiling.

"I suppose, you are right," he huffed and grabbed his cain walking towards the exit. "And Enigma, don't touch anything while I'm gone."
