No honour among thieves.
Jester let the wind blow through her hair as she sat on a gargoyle waiting for her… friend to come. Was Nightmare really her friend?
She frowned at the question.
Was Nightmare anyone's friend.. now that was a better question.
"Jester?"
She jumped to her feet and span around to see Nightmare stepping out of the darkness, a creepy smile was on his face as he observed her.
"Take a picture it'll last ya longer," she giggled making Nightmare blink in confusion.
"What?"
"Ya never heard that saying before?"
"No."
"What?! Where'd they been keeping ya'? In a basement or something?" Jester joked but Nightmare didn't answer before he sighed.
"Yes, actually."
Jester frowned but chose to not continue with questioning. "So… what do ya want to know?"
"Well… everything you can tell me."
She laughed hysterically holding onto her sides before falling to the floor laughing. "Oh boy!" she giggled. "You are not going to like what I have ta offer… ya see I know nothing!"
Nightmare frowned. "What?" he bit out.
Jester got to her feet and skipped over to him. "I told ya frightmare I don't know anything, I adapt and over come… ya know what I'm saying?"
"Your head says differently."
The smirk that fell on Jester's lips was predatory as she placed her hand on his chest and leaned in close making Nightmare blink in confusion, leaning back a little. "Kid… if you can just look in my head and find out anything ya want ta know… why not save yourself the hassle and do that? kay?" she pushed him back and walked away to the gargoyle again staring down at the ground. "Besides I got business ta do…tidy a few things up like Strange."
Nightmare glared at her a little and placed a finger to his temple, narrowing his eyes at Jester and smirked as he waited. But nothing happened.
"Yo buddy… ya mind not giving me a migrain?"
He blinked in confusion. "What?"
Jester sighed and turned to him with a frown. "Step away from the brain," she cried pointing at her head before smirking as she pulled out the pin from the grenande she'd been carrying. "It'll get ya hurt."
Then she tossed it and jumped off the building. Nightmare ran past the grenade and jumped off the roof too before his eyes widened at the prospect he wasn't going to be able to stop himself, but then a hand grabbed him and he frowned looking up to see Jester holding onto the ledge of the building grinning at him.
"Pull me up!"
"Cool it kid… I'm thinking."
"You're thinking about doing what?!" yelled Gecko as he stared at Conner in disbelieve.
Conner sighed. "I'm going to kill Whisper. You got a problem with that?"
"Problem with ya killing him? no. The problem with you doing it on your own? Yes, I have a problem, a real big problem."
Conner glared at him slightly, an odd sight truth be told before he turned to look out at Arkham City once again. "You're not my mother."
"Yeah and if she was here she'd be saying the same thing ya nut job!"
Conner laughed slightly. Maybe he was nuts.
"Sorry Gecko, but I have to do this," then he was out of the window running through the streets and over buildings, heading towards Wonder City.
He knew that's where he would find him. He knew that.
It didn't take him long to get to Wonder City and climbed up to rest on one of the buildings. He was glad he'd stopped off at Deadshot's supply, he'd taken some more ammo and a sniper rifle, setting it up he lay down and waited, his eyes through the eye piece glaring down at the door way.
He watched as the doors opened and in came Whisper and his father… there was a woman with them and a bunch of assassins.
Target frowned when he saw Whisper's face, he didn't even know he had a scar leading from his left eye down the side of his face, like a blade.
His target was on Whisper before it shifted and he aimed at one of the assassin guards taking a calming breath he focussed and blocked everything else out, before firing.
The assassin dropped like a sack of spuds, the others looked alert, even Whisper, then the next assassin was down.
Now they drew their blades and Target smirked. Wouldn't stop him, not today.
He aimed and fired, the third one went down now only one guard left… not anymore.
He smirked and fired a shot at Whisper's feet causing the boy to back up and look around in… was that fear? Funny, he never thought he'd see that on his face.
Target climbed down and walked out in front of Whisper, his father and the woman.
Ras seemed shocked to see him as did Whisper.
He watched as Whisper's eyes landed on Target's metal arm before they looked back at his face.
Target smirked slightly. "Yeah I know… got myself an upgrade," he loaded his wrist guns and glared at Whisper. "We never did finish that fight did we?"
Whisper narrowed his eyes and folded his arms. "I will not fight you."
"You seemed pretty keen earlier!"
Whisper growled. "Don't you get it?! I only did that to save your life!"
Target scoffed. "Cutting someone's arm off to save their life when you could of just let them go? Yeah that's a new one on me!"
"Seems getting an upgrade on your arm wasn't the only thing that changed."
"Injuries like that change a man, Whisp! You should know that by now," Target snarled before he began to fire, Whisper dodged the bullets and ran towards one of the buildings before he climbed up the side and stood at the top.
"Higher ground isn't going to help you!" Target cried as he ran and flipped up the building and swung his fist out to hit Whisper who dodged the blows and kicked him back.
Conner, not to be discouraged began to fire at him again, but Whisper dodged him and Conner struck out once more with fists.
From a distance you would of mistaken it for a dance, their movements were so fluid and timed to perfection, until Whisper kicked Target back and he lost his balance falling backwards.
"Conner!" he shouted and jumped grabbing his arm so he wouldn't fall to the never ending bottomless fall into the sewers. "Hold on, I'm going to pull you up!"
Conner glared at him. "Why?!" he yelled. "Why the hell are you saving me now?!"
"Don't you get it?" Whisper snarled as he pulled him up towards the top, grabbing his waist he hoisted the much smaller and younger boy to the top. "If I wanted to kill you, you would already be dead."
Conner frowned and looked at the floor. "But… you cut my arm off, are you expecting me to walk away from this?!"
Whisper sighed and shook his head. "No… of course not. I'm sorry it came to this I really am, I… I never wanted to hurt you… why do you think I told you to stay away?!"
Target frowned and shuffled his feet. "You… you didn't want to do it?"
"No of course I didn't!"
There was a pause as Conner looked him in the eyes and seemed to be studying them, his arms crossed across his chest and Whisper couldn't help but sigh.
"I… understand that you don't want me to be your friend anymore…" he placed his hand on his shoulder and shook it a little. "You were my best friend… my brother… goodbye…" he sighed before a smile twitched at his lips. "scarlet bullet."
Target's eyes winded in shock. He knew Whisper only gave you a title if he respected you, that was why he called Luna 'shadow bender' it was mark of respect.
Whisper… he respected him?
Conner let a smile cross his lips before he glanced over at Whisper who was about to jump down.
"You should leave the bandages off."
Whisper paused and turned his head a little. "What?"
"The bandages," Conner said with a shrug as he picked up the sniper rifle. "You should keep them off… not that you'd listen to my fashion advice… what do I know after all?"
Whisper turned to him and stared at Target for a long time. This was the olive branch… the deciding point… Conner was offering him forgiveness… even after what he did.
He turned back to his father who was staring at him intently.
"You look tougher without them," Conner continued. "And stick with the armour… it makes you look way cooler."
Whisper rolled his eyes before he waved at his father who stared at him in shock.
"Whisper!" he roared but Whisper was leaving, he walked over to Conner and nudged him a little as he walked past him.
"You never knew anything on fashion."
Conner frowned before smirking. "Yeah well… I can try can't I?"
"Yeah… you can. Come on."
The two boys smirked as they ran and jumped across the gap and landed on the floor.
Whisper glanced at Target who'd stuffed his hands in his pockets and he was now whistling to himself as they carried on through the sewers.
"I can't believe you've forgiven me…" he muttered as he turned away before he looked back at Target.
The scarlet haired boy smirked. "Hey it's not me you have to worry about, it's Gecko."
"Gecko?"
"Yeah… ya know… big scaly kid, likes to eat those who tick him off… sticks to walls."
"Target, I know who Gecko is… why is he angry… stupid question."
"Yes, yes it was."
Whisper turned to him before he pulled a phone out and handed it back to Conner.
"My phone!" he cried in shock taking it and observing it. "Why'd you have it?"
"I texted help."
"You… texted?" Conner frowned before smirking slightly. "Who'd you text?"
"Jester."
Conner held a blank expression and stared at his friend. "Jester. You texted Jester?!"
Whisper folded his arms and raised an eyebrow. "Is there a problem?"
"Oh no… no just…. she is nuts and might of thought it funny to not help!" Conner cried waving his arms around in the air.
Whisper tilted his head to the side. "Are you alive?"
"Well… yes but-."
"Then I am struggling to see what the annoyance is about."
"Oh okay you're going back to the blunt and to the point thing… well two can play at that game my friend.'
"Yes but not you, now calm down. You're alive, she got help and now you have a metal arm which has appeared to have increased your confidence," Whisper tilted his head to the side. "Shall I remove the other so you get an even bigger boost?"
Conner blinked and put his phone away before focusing on Whisper again. "Ya know what's scary… I can't tell if you're joking or not."
"I would do it as a favour," Whisper continued before he hopped up on top of one of the trains, helping Target up who was frowning at him.
"Yeah… you and me see favours very differently. You see, I see a favour as doing something for someone that they'll like and be happy with… cutting off my other arm does not tick those boxes for me."
Whisper watched as he ran and jumped from train to train, jumping to the next rail and climbing up, turning back to Whisper who was following behind quickly.
"I only assumed-."
"Why don't you let me do the assumptions and you stick with the smart stuff? huh?"
Whisper let the corner of his mouth twitch upwards slightly as he nodded and they ran towards the surface.
"Attention inmates of Arkham City… it seems Bruce Wayne wanted to pay you visit… treat him well."
Target frowned as the two climbed up the side of a building.
"Why would Strange imprison and rich nit wit like Bruce Wayne?"
Whisper turned to him and frowned before he looked away. "He was running the petition against Arkham City…"
"And Strange can somehow lock him up… it's strange.."
Whisper sighed and closed his eyes to keep himself calm as Target grinned at him.
"Please tell me you didn't," he mumbled.
Target grinned. "What? Ya gotta admit that was pretty quick. Eh? Eh?"
"There is no word bad enough to describe how awful that was," Whisper mumbled back before he got slammed to the floor, making Target wince and turn to see Gecko on top of Whisper, pinning him down, his tail was beating furiously against the floor before it wrapped around Whisper's neck.
"Gecks, chill!" cried Target as he ran over.
"Get off me, you overgrown insect eater!" Whisper snarled, before Gecko tightened his tail.
"What the hell is he doing with you Target?!"
Target face palmed. "Big guy it's all good! Me and Whisp are friends again… he saved my life that's why he did it!"
"He saved you life by cutting your arm off? That's a new one on me!"
"Well I said the same thing but.. he did call Jester!"
Gecko turned to give him a deadbeat look. "Are you sure he wasn't trying to kill you?"
Target blinked before frowning. "Now that you mention it…"
"I called Jester because she was the first one on the list!" Whisper choked out.
"You could of scrolled down you know…"
"Could you scroll down if you were dying?"
"Probably not."
"Exactly!"
"Still," Gecko growled as he glared down at Whisper. "You could of killed him!"
"Could of," Whisper agreed. "But I didn't."
Gecko growled again glaring down at Whisper.
"Gecko, it's fine seriously! We're friends!"
"Get off me," Whisper growled at him. "Get off me or I'll make you get off me, which would you rather it be?"
Gecko snarled down at him before uncurling his tail from around Whisper's throat and he stood up, letting Whisper get to his feet rubbing his neck.
"Why didn't you kill him?"
"I could of done!" Target cried. "I had a chance to, right in the head between the eyes… would of been one hell of a shot."
"Except it wouldn't work."
They both turned to look at Whisper who was tightening his gauntlet before he looked at them.
"What… what do you mean 'it wouldn't work' of course it would!"
"No, it wouldn't, it would only keep me dead it wouldn't kill me."
They both stared at him blinking making Whisper sigh.
"I can't be killed alright. My father is Ras Al Ghul as you know… and he has pits that can re-generate you, bring you back from the dead too. I often carry a few bottles of the liquid to drink, it keeps me healed and young. Hence me being as old as I am."
"And how old are you?"
Whisper turned to them and raised an eyebrow. "I am over one hundred years old."
The other two were both silent before Target did the guns at Whisper and grinned. "Looking good for your age!"
"It is not a joking matter Conner… I have seen people die and I have stayed the same age as I am. I watched my mother… die of old age while I stayed young. It is a curse, not a blessing."
"What's a curse and not a blessing?"
They turned to see Enigma climbing up the side of the building holding a bag of trophies.
"Oh here Enigma, let me help," Gecko said as he came over and helped her up.
"Thanks Gecko, hey Target how you feeling?"
Target smiled. "Better… thanks E'."
Enigma frowned. "Only my close friends call me E'."
"Oh.. well.. okay," Target mumbled going red.
Whisper could feel a blush creeping onto his face and he felt himself getting nervous.
He scowled. Stupid feelings, get back and stay away.
"Enigma," he muttered with a nod.
Enigma's eyes widened in shock. "Whisper?"
"It's okay E' I mean Enigma, we're friends again… he did it to save me life."
Enigma continued to stare at Whisper, she wasn't staring at him because of what he did… she was staring because of how he looked.
Yeah he looked a little rough but it suited him and the scar along the side of his face didn't take anything away from his looks, if anything it added to them.
Enigma let her eyes go half lidded as she continued to stare at him.
Whisper shuffled uncomfortably before he muttered to Target. "She's… staring at me oddly."
"Dude," Target whisper back harshly. "She's checking you out and by the looks of things… she likes what she sees."
"Oh."
"Oh? that's all ya going to say is oh? Whisper, ya need to get in there!"
"What?!"
Gecko smirked. "How about me and Target leave you two alone, Enigma looks like she could need a hand carrying those trophies around the city. Whisper, why don't you help the little lady out?"
Whisper glared at them before he sighed and walked over to Enigma. "I'll carry the bags, give them here."
Enigma passed him the bags before she blushed as their fingers touched a little, it was hard to tell because he could keep his emotions under control quite well, but Whisper had turned a light shade of pink.
They both continued in Enigma's walk before Enigma decided she wasn't happy with the silence.
"So… why'd you do it?"
"To save his life."
Enigma frowned and opened her mouth when Whisper raised his hand to stop her and sighed. "If it's about how I could of done it differently… please do not bother. I have already had it from the other two."
She nodded before sorting out her pony tail. "So.. how long you lived here?" she questioned.
"About 2 years now. What about you?"
"Just moved here a month ago. Never thought I'd say this but… I miss school," she sighed before shaking her head. "Nothing I can do now though, but oh well."
Whisper nodded his head before he frowned. "I thought Riddler wasn't letting you out of his hideout?"
"Oh…" Enigma blushed before laughing nervously. "I snuck out."
"You snuck out past the Riddler?"
"He had his attention elsewhere."
Whisper turned and raised an eyebrow at her. "On what?"
"My mother."
"Oh."
"Yeah," Enigma smiled slightly. "I said something like that when I found out."
Whisper let his mouth curl slightly in a smile before quickly dropping it and turning away.
Why did they have to make him of all people? Why him? It… didn't make any sense. Well it did. They wanted to make him uncomfortable because they knew… they knew what exactly?
He let a deep frown set across his mouth when he realised it. He was attracted towards Enigma and her mother was the Sphinx while her father was the Riddler…. wonderful. Both parents where nuts.
Oh… he sure knew how to pick them.
"Why are we running?" questioned Nightmare as Jester went sprinting through the streets with Nightmare not far behind.
"Did you not see the black blur that crossed the sky?"
"Yes."
"It's the Bat! He's here!" she cried as she skipped past the Iceberg dodging the bullets before she jumped down with Nightmare following close behind as she ran and slammed the door to Edward's hideout open and ran in.
Edward was sitting back in his chair, quite calm, not expecting anything out of the ordinary about to happen and then-
"EDDIE!"
He yelped and fell of the chair before he turned sharply and glared at the girl. "Jester for the last time will you stop doing that!"
"We got trouble!"
"What now?"
"He's here!" Jester cried as she ran over to him. "Eddie he's here!"
"Who's here?" he snarled.
"Eddie… the Bat. He's here," Edward's eyes widened but Jester gave him a grave look. "And a gang war has started. Eddie, we failed."
"No little sister, not yet we haven't," Edward turned to his computers and switched them all on grinning as they sprung to life. "We haven't lost, this is just a minor set back before the real game."
"Real game? Eddie, the war's started we're going to kill each other off! It's all happening just like you said it would!"
"Ah yes it is isn't it?"
Jester froze at that voice and turned to see Scarecrow coming out of the shadows, his limp was more prominent now then before and Jester felt her stomach go slightly queazy at the sight of his face, which was an achievement considering some of the things she'd seen.
"Jonny," she muttered before turning to Edward in confusion.
"Do not worry little girl," Jonathan continued as he limped into the light. "We have something that will ensure we'll be safe, that will ensure victory."
"Yeah what's that?"
"Him," Scarecrow said as he pointed at Nightmare who stared back in confusion.
"Me?" he asked confused.
"Why yes, you. Your power. With it, no one can beat us, not even Strange," Scarecrow grinned. "This is all falling exactly how I wanted it to."
Jester frowned. "But… we'll kill each other off…"
"You talked sense into all of the rogues Jester. They did listen."
"Then why are they fighting?"
"Ah," Scarecrow grinned. "That would be my doing. I set the gears in motion," he turned and pointed to Edward. "Edward ensured that he would gain people's trust," Edward grinned at her. "And now… you've brought us little Nightmare here, we can win."
Jester turned to Edward and raised an eyebrow. "What's going on?"
"I was a fool, Jester," Edward admitted. "I thought it would be best if we stopped the war… but I was wrong."
"But everything will be in chaos," Jester cried.
Edward nodded. "It will won't it? But you see I made a deal with Jonathan. So… we set the gears in motion after I talked with him."
"Sending Sphinx to Two Face," Jester muttered. "You sent her there because…"
"Because Two Face would wish to fight… but I… we needed to hold him back just a little longer, I was shocked she was able to convince him not to fight until someone made a move against him and after that it was simple."
Jester looked at the floor before she suddenly realised something. "You wanted me with you to see Sionis to put him off his game, it would be easy then for you wouldn't it… you knew he would be distracted enough to not notice you making your observations."
"Indeed."
"You used me!"
Edward frowned shook his head. "No of course not. I wouldn't do that, not to you. We need to keep Sionis out of this battle, my intentions to stop him were true."
"What about Penguin?"
"Don't you think it was odd, little one," Scarecrow chuckled. "That you visited him twice?"
"You were seeing who has the most fire power," Jester mumbled. "Penguin has the most connections but Sionis has the most men, you were observing Sasha's i-pad when she placed on the desk to join in the argument."
"It was easy enough."
Jester narrowed her eyes. "Whats the end game to this?"
"Power," Scarecrow hissed. "Don't you see, I need Joker to die. For this to work, I need him gone."
"That's why you wanted me to speak to Harley," Jester muttered. "You wanted me to set in motion this idea that Joker may die and Mist was there to observe wasn't she? To see how much men Joker had."
Scarecrow nodded. "Mist was in this from the start… well Sphinx was. Don't you find it curious how she was there before you and don't you find it a little odd she had Edward's phone?"
"I thought he dropped it," Jester mumbled. "But he didn't did he… you took it."
"Not I," Scarecrow chuckled. "Mist did, she took it out and had the photo ready from Enigma."
"Enigma's in on this too?!"
"Why of course she is," Scarecrow chuckled. "Don't you find it a little odd…. that she was able to unpick handcuffs. She is the hacker known as Crossword, it was easy for her."
"The photograph was from the Asylum," Jester realised. "And… and it wasn't Gordon who arrested us was it?"
"You're right Edward she is clever," Jonathan chuckled. "No, it wasn't."
"It was Clayface." Edward admitted. "Scarecrow later told me he needed both you and Enigma."
"For what?"
"For this," Edward gestured to around him. "We're going to take control. Think about it Jester, when Joker dies the place will be in so much chaos… that Jonathan's return will set everyone off and easily allow him to take control of the underworld."
"Wait…" Jester waved her arms in the air. "We now want to create a war?"
"Chaos, little one," Scarecrow chuckled. "Beautiful chaos."
"Chaos…" Jester whispered before grinning. "I like it!"
"You'll help?" Edward asked confused.
"Of course I'll help!" Jester chuckled. "I can't resist a good bit of chaos and it's about time really. I want back at Boss J man! After the Asylum, he didn't even care, tricked me like Harley and I am not Harley!"
Scarecrow grinned. "Good, there is a bigger game set in though, Strange is in mind to kill us by making us have a war but… well, now that Batman is here our success will be inevitable."
Jester grinned and turned to Edward. "So… what we going to do now?"
"Act like none of this ever happened," Edward admitted. "We will carry on with our plans for Arkham City that we had originally, Mist will be our outside contact when this all ends. As will Enigma and yourself, you see when it is reviled you were wrongfully imprisoned-."
"We can be your ears and eyes on the outside," Jester chuckled. "Super cool, but tell me why do we need him?" she questioned pointing at Nightmare.
Scarecrow chuckled and wondered over to him, the boy stood still staring at him with slight apprehension before taking a step back when Scarecrow got too close. "His mind Jester and his powers," Scarecrow chuckled. "I could use something like that, how easy it was for us both to lure you here."
"What?!" Nightmare spluttered.
"You sister," Scarecrow chuckled. "Why do you think she made it obvious that we were here, she knew you would attack… Midfright can see in the dark, she played you like a fool."
Nightmare blinked. "Wait.. you you tricked me into coming here?!"
"Tricked? No, no, no, no. We simply guided you here," Scarecrow assured. "A boy of your talents will be great use for what lies ahead."
"And what lies ahead?" questioned Jester.
"The greatest war Gotham will ever see. I already have a plan, we will take over Gotham and destroy the bat with all of our fellow rogues along side us, thanks to the alliances you and Edward have now formed."
Jester nodded and grinned. "I like it. But.. what about the others?"
"Others?"
"Ya know… like Hush…"
"Leave Tommy to me," Scarecrow assured. "But for now, I hear you gave Luna quite the punishment Nightmare, even if she was expecting it I do not deal well with that," Scarecrow glared before he jammed his needles in Nightmare's arm and boy collapsed to the floor. "Time to have your own nightmares, Nightmare."
Edward turned to Jester and sighed. "I was going to tell you."
"Oh, don't worry about it, Eddie," Jester waved him off. "We all got secrets to keep. Besides, I think I prefer this plan to the other one, least we'll be at the top this time or near it."
"Yes in our rightful place."
"You said it not me."
They both turned at the sound of an explosion from one of the monitors and they both peered at it to see the church tower blown to bits.
"That's my cue," Edward grinned as he grabbed his cain. "It's time for my plan to be set in motion, distract the Bat a little," he chuckled. "Not that it's hard. He is an idiot."
"Goodbye, my friends," Scarecrow called as he hoisted an unconscious Nightmare onto his shoulder. "We shall meet again soon and be ready for the next part."
"What about Arkham City?"
"Oh, we're done for Arkham City," Scarecrow assured. "There is nothing else for us to do, the wheels have been set in motion and the trap is now being set in place, ready to take out that Bat."
"You've got something else planned," Edward stated narrowing his eyes. "What is it?"
"Now, now," Scarecrow tutted. "Patience Edward, don't you have a game you need to be getting on with?" he chuckled as he left the hideout, still with Nightmare over his shoulder.
As soon as Scarecrow was outside he took a deep breath and looked around. No cameras. Edward really didn't no how to prioritise did he?
"Do you have the boy?"
Scarecrow rolled his eyes and turned to the voice in the shadows showing Nightmare on his shoulder. "What does it look like to you? I hope you're right about him, he is a bit of a wild card."
"I can assure you, I am right," there was a pause before the person spoke again. "And your friends are they with you?"
"It's like taking candy from a baby it's that easy," Jonathan chuckled as he walked over to the voice. "The idiots believe they'll get a shared part in my plan, I may need them as the pawns before we get the real goal of destroying the bat. Edward suspects something though."
"I'm sure a little talk with Mist will change that. She can easily make him forget about such things."
"Indeed. Now, if you do not mind I'd rather not get caught before my plan is executed, that would be embarrassing."
"Of course. I shall get everything ready."
"Not yet," Scarecrow hissed turning sharply on his comrade. "I am going to leave it, I have a special plan as to when I will be starting my trap. Oh, do you think you could spring Jullian Day for me from Two Face? I think he will be happy to be free for my date I'll be setting the trap off."
"You have very little honour for your friends don't you?"
"There is no honour among thieves…. Arkham Knight," Scarecrow turned sharply and continued walking off. "See to it everything is ready for next year, for Halloween. I want it to be a Halloween no one in Gotham will ever forget. Everyone will crumble down in fear, minds will shatter with the toxin I will be releasing into the air."
"Won't that effect the others too?"
"The others?"
"Rogues."
Scarecrow gave a light chuckle as he disappeared into the nearby darkness. "Like I said," he laughed before turning so his eyes caught the light, giving them an unnatural glow. "There is no honour among thieves."
