Chapter 3
"Ms. Smith," the nurse called out smiling at me brightly. I knew she was just trying to be friendly but it was almost as if her cheerfulness was somehow mocking me.
The last couple of days had been absolutely horrible and I could only hope that I would wake up from the vivid nightmare soon. Not only did I feel like death had warmed over but the mother hens my brothers had turned into was driving me insane. Don't get me wrong, I loved that they took care of me but to see my strong, fearless eldest brother with constant worry lines on his face and him waiting on me hand and foot was starting to get annoying.
I gave the nurse a weak smile as I gingerly lifted myself out of the waiting room chair. Dean and Sam immediately at either side of me to make sure I was alright and thankfully the nurse stepped in to save me.
"Why don't we get you all set and then we can come get your brothers," she offered not waiting for my answer as she stepped between Dean and I and took my arm to lead me back to the room where the test was going to be done.
I think that was the only time in my life that it looked as if Dean was ready to hit a woman.
"I'll be alright," I told both of them, "You can just wait out here."
I was seventeen years old and couldn't lean on my brothers forever. If I really was dying then this was going to be the only time I had to do something on my own. Not that I really wanted to be by myself but I figured that I'd better take the chance while I had it.
The nurse led me to a room towards the back and helped me change into the hospital gown before I laid down so she could prepare me for the biopsy. My back was cleaned with probably the coldest alcohol I had ever felt as the doctor walked in and briefly introduced himself before washing his hands and applying his gloves. I wanted him to talk to me. To show e that I could trust him in what he was about to do to me.
It was explained that I was going to feel a small pinch as the local anesthetic was injected by a needle and that during the procedure itself I might feel some pressure but it was important I stay as still as possible. Like hell I would be staying still. I was about to possibly find out my destiny.
The second I felt the doctor's gloved hand on my back I freaked out. "Wait! I can't do this! I don't do needles and I mean there has to be some other way to test for this, right?" I pleaded wishing for the millionth time mom was here to hold me and whisper soothing words into my ear.
"There's nothing to worry about Ms. Smith, I've done hundreds of these," the doctor tried to reassure me but when I felt his hand on my back again I almost got off the table.
"No, I can't do this!"
"How about I get one of your brothers for you," the nurse offered. "The room is kind of small to have both back here but one can come back if you'd like."
"Dean," I immediately answered needing him to tell me everything was going to be alright like he did when I was younger and had a nightmare.
"Of course," she smiled as she took her gloves off and walked out the door.
Not even two seconds later Dean came barreling through the door and right over to my side where he took my hand in his. "Hey sport, what's going on?"
"I can't do this," I repeated shaking my head as a tear escaped and rolled down my cheek.
"Yes, you can," he promised using his free hand to wipe the tears before running his hand through my hair.
I saw him give a subtle nod to the doctor to begin as he kept my attention on him. I felt the first needle go in and let out an involuntary whimper. "Shh, you're ok," Dean muttered, "You remember when you were younger and wanted to play Superwoman and decided to jump off the monkey bars?"
"Yeah," I squeaked out scrunching my face up waiting for this whole thing to just be over other day I would have laughed at the silly younger version of myself being reckless.
"Yeah, you managed to break your arm and spent the whole day in the emergency room trying to bite anyone that came near you to put a cast on it," Dean chuckled and shook his head slightly at the memory. "But do you remember what happened?" I was silent for a minute, I knew he was trying to get my mind off of what was going on but I didn't want to talk about when I was younger and broke my arm. "Come on, I know you remember."
"You told me that if I sat still long enough to get a cast put on that you'd give me your pie."
"Uh huh," Dean smiled. "Well, if you sit still so was can get this over with on the way home we'll get you some pie." I smiled up at him. It was his way of promising that he was going to do everything he could to make sure that I was okay.
