Flashbacks
I walked through the town with confidence, despite the lightweight feeling in my stomach. My combat boots were silent against the pavement. I kept my eyes trained on the road ahead but halted when something shiny gleamed from the corner of my eye. There was a little tattoo and piercing parlor with different rings for the piercings glimmering in the setting sunlight. I bit my lip and walked in curiously. I was greeted with a smile and a wave from a tattooed girl with several of those pretty objects in her ears and a few on her face.
"Hey there you're a newb¹ aren't you" She asked. "What can I help ya with?" It was then I got an idea.
"Um… I was hoping you'd have some belly rings I can look at" I said with a small smile of my own. She grinned wider and reached under the counter.
"You getting it pierced or just a new ring?" She questioned me again.
"Just a new ring" I replied, lifting my shirt to show her my already pierced belly with its red and black ring. She grinned at the black onyx circle with the ruby slit making it look similar to a cat's eye.
"Badass, wish I could find one like that" She stated before placing a box with several rings in it on the counter. "I don't really get why you'd want to change it but… whatever, your choice."
"Just need a change every so often." I told her with a shrug, looking at the shiny silvers and assorted gemstones.
"These are the good ones, the ones that are real" She told me. "I figured you'd like them better."
I nodded, I could already tell they were real but I didn't want to say anything about it, just in case she would freak out. Normal humans can't tell just by looking. Out of the 20 or so that were there, a few caught my eye but I was drawn to one. It was silver with a gem that was a burnt-orange color and cut in the shape of a flame set in the same silver and attached to the rod. The ball at the top wasn't really a ball. It was flat with another one of the stones set in it that curved outward.
"That one" I said. She nodded.
"Topaz, it'd be a good color on you" she replied. I reached in and pulled out my money out of one of the many zippered pockets on the front of my skinny jeans.
"How much is it?" I asked. She took a moment to look at the price list.
"¥1700²" She told me. I nodded and looked at the money in my hand. I subtracted about ¥5000 for food which left me just enough to buy it. I forked over the yen and left with my new ring with a wave.
It won't hide my ears but it'll still be nice to have the option of having them for a little while without worrying about the hole... I thought as I left. Looking up at the sky I realized how late it had become. I shrugged and walked into a nearby café to order food. I munched on my Fish Katsu bento box and drank some cold sake³ (fake ID, shh) before paying the necessary ¥1600 and leaving. By that time it was dark, not that it bugged me. I could still see perfectly.
The vampires will have come out to play. I thought with a wry smile. Not five minutes after I thought it, I felt a hand yank me into an alley by my hair. I flew a few feet into a fence and landed on my feet. I could feel my eyes turning to their lovely red and blue stages. The only thing the spell didn't have perfect control over, my eyes. I hissed at the man, a Level E.
He grinned manically at me; blood dripped down his face onto what I'm sure was once a white shirt turned black by the caked on dry blood. My nose twitched in both disgust and excitement at the blood. I was in my own way, a monster as he is. I like the taste of blood, it's tangy when it's fresh but I hate that he drank it so… uninhibited. From what I'm guessing based on research into Halflings and my own experiences, nekos like me only drink blood in affection. It's a very personal thing.
It didn't take too long for him to catch on I wasn't going to try and run… yet. He charged at my crouched form, hand raised and disgusting, blood coated fingers ready to tear at me. The blood curling grin was still on his face.
I smirked and lunged towards him.
So for anyone who doesn't know what they are, here's a list of the stuff I marked.
Newb¹ Someone who is new at something, like gaming, getting their first tattoo, etc.
¥1700² There are 80.84 yen in the American dollar so I converted stuff the best I could plus extra cause people still need to make money off that stuff so…
Sake³ Sake is an alcoholic drink from Japan that can be served cold. The drinking age in Japan is 20 so Akemi, who is still 15, had to have a fake ID to have them. I DO NOT CONDONE UNDERAGE DRINKING! But hey, your life, do whatever the hell you want.
