Apologies for this taking so long, but I am working on the final chapter now.
We walked into the abandoned warehouse, both Dean and Sam carrying flash lights and their bags. My left arm was still in the sling, so I just carried my duffel on my right shoulder. I hadn't intended to stay with the dynamic duo, honestly I was ready to get some space between me and Dean. But when they told me they were going to break the lump of clay they stole from Dick, I got the feeling I needed to be there. Sam placed the case on a table as Dean threw his and Sam's duffel bags onto the floor. I walked over to Sam as he opened his laptop.
"Are we sure this is a good idea?" I asked looking down at the silver case laid on the table.
"We need to know what Dick uncovered, this is the only way." Sam shrugged as he looked over his shoulder to me.
"Awesome." I muttered sarcastically as Dean walked to the side of me. His focus was on the case and thankfully that meant when I walked away from him, it didn't hurt his feelings. I dropped my duffel onto the floor the opposite side of the room to the guys. As I dropped the weight off my shoulder I rotated it, the ache from the bag lasting longer than it should have. I knew exactly why, I had known the moment I got drunk in the bathroom with Dean. I let out a little grunt working loose the tight muscles.
"You ok?" Dean asked looking over to me, getting Sam's attention in the process. I looked up and saw the worry on both Winchester faces. I shrugged, letting out a sigh as I looked back to the brothers.
"Whatever the hell Dick did to me... it took a lot of energy to stay awake through it all.." I admitted looking over to the silver case. A shiver ran through my body as I remembered the black goo seeping out of my arm. "I'm pretty much running on empty when it comes to my wolf side. I ache, my arm itches, I'm exhausted. I'm-"
"Human." Dean finished my sentence as I looked over to him. He didn't look mad, or worried about me, he was pulling on that stone front he used when he was keeping something from Sam. I knew he was trying his best to keep his emotions from me.
"Nearly." I admitted with a sad smile as I looked around the room. I had to admit there was something good being practically human. The hurt I felt from being around Dean had down right vanished. There was moments where I caught myself looking at him, and I felt a flutter of hurt in my heart, but overall... nope I could cope with being in the same room as him. It was nice to feel like maybe, if temporarily, I was over Dean Winchester.
"How's the bite?" Sam asked throwing me his puppy dog expression as I smirked a little. I had expected this talk for the last couple of days since we dropped off Charlie, but in all the madness of getting away from Dick I guess Sam had forgotten.
"Hurts like a son of a bitch." I explained with a wide smile, throwing Sam slightly. "I can feel it healing, actually healing. Man, I mean it's slow... but it's really healing." I added as I glanced down to the deep blue sling my arm was resting in.
"Finally some good news at least." Dean smirked at me as he caught my eye. I just nodded bowing my head as I sat on a grubby looking chair near Sam, resting my arm on the table carefully. I watched as Sam unwrapped the piece of clay in the case and put it on the table. Dean walked over with a tool box and placed it on the far end of the table from me.
"That's a lot of fuss over a caveman Lego." Dean muttered as he looked at the clay brick.
"Yeah. Well, whatever Dick wants is bricked up inside that." Sam hummed as he glanced at the brick with a worried look. Dean took a mallet out of the tool box, before passing me and Sam safety glasses to wear.
"Ok, look, I just want to voice that I'm not sure smashing up the mystery rock is a good idea." I sighed getting to my feet and standing by the side of Sam as we slipped the glasses on.
"Megan, we need to open it. We need to know what Dick was after so badly." Sam explained as Dean slipped on his safety glasses.
"Fine, but I'm not happy about this. Especially using a mallet to crack it open." I huffed folding my arms over my chest as I shook my head a little. Dean took a glance at me and Sam before raising the mallet.
"All right." Dean sighed crashing the mallet against the clay as thunder clapped above our heads. Dean hit the clay again; this time lightening flashed and thunder roared above our heads. Dean paused looking at the pair of us, both me and Sam looking weary of beating the clay brick anymore. "That sound like somebody saying, No, wait – stop, to you?" Dean asked looking at the pair of us.
"Uh... Yeah. Yeah." Sam answered as I just nodded along, biting the edge of my lip nervously.
"Yeah." Dean sighed before shrugging. "Oh, well." He muttered before he started to hit the clay a few more times. Again with each hit of the clay, lightening and thunder roared around our heads.
"Guys?" I asked as the most thunderous roar belted out from the sky above us and the whole room lit up with the force of the lightening. Dean picked up an inscribed jet black stone tablet out of the clay casing, turning it around in the light. As my eyes landed on it the niggling feeling that I had seen it before surfaced, the same feeling I had back when I saw the dig sites Dick had archaeologists working on. I knew, deep down, I knew what the stone was.
I kept my feelings to myself. I couldn't explain why I thought I knew what the stone was so there was no reason to tell the brothers. We spent a couple of hours researching the stone. Obviously, by we, I mean me and Sam, Dean quickly decided he'd be more useful sleeping. Something me and Sam didn't argue about because Dean could be so damn annoying when he got bored of research. I sat cross legged on one of the chairs as both me and Sam searched on our laptops for anything useful.
"I'm struggling to identify the... um writing on it." Sam huffed as he looked frustrated with his laptop.
"Yeah, me too. I mean it has to be writing right, but nothing like I've ever seen..." I let my sentence trail off as I looked at the stone. The niggling feeling back in my mind.
"Maybe Dick doesn't know what it is either?" Sam suggested as I found myself locked on the tablet. This rock... I've seen it before? No, but I've seen something like this before... I know I have. "Megan?" Sam put his hand gently on my shoulder, shaking me. I blinked and turned to him completely confused.
"Huh?" I asked blinking a few more times as I came back to the room.
"Are you ok?" Sam frowned as I gave him a weak smile. "I've been talking to you the last ten minutes." He added as I let out a oh noise.
"My bad." I nodded tucking some hair behind my ear. I bit my lip as I looked from the tablet to Sam. Sam is reasonable, logical, maybe if I tell him I've seen something like this before he could... help jog my memory... maybe? I should tell him. "I um...this might sound stupid, but I think I've seen something like this before. I just... I'm struggling to remember where." I explained into his puppy dog eyes.
"The tablet?" Sam asked furrowing his eyebrows together in confusion. I could see the cogs working as he processed what I was saying, I knew a part of him would be searching to see if he had seen something similar before too.
"Yup." I nodded as we both looked at the stone tablet.
"But you can't remember where?" Sam asked turning to look at me again.
"Nope." I sighed, popping the p and shaking my head. "I think... I feel, like when I did see it... it was brief... like I wasn't meant to see it. I'm, I don't know. I'm tired." I sighed leaning back in my chair offering Sam a small smile.
"Being human does that to a person." Sam teased with a smile of his own as I shook my head at him. Before I could say anything we heard Dean let out a sleepy giggle. We both knew what he was dreaming of, he only got that smile for a few select reasons.
"Do you think he'll ever do any real research?" I teased softly as I watched Dean hug his make shift pillow close to his body and giggle again.
"No, and if he did... actually no. No I can't even pretend to imagine it." Sam laughed as he glanced at his big brother before turning back to me. "You guys seem... better." Sam seemed to struggle for the right word. I shrugged as I ran a hand through my hair, blowing the air out of my cheeks at the same time. Better? Yeah I guess we are. I can stand being in the same room as him... but it's only because I'm so weak. The pain is still there if I think about him too long.
"I don't know... being almost human, I don't feel it any more." I admitted, before letting out a small yawn. I stretched in a vein attempt to stay awake, but healing, being practically human was making an all night research session next to impossible.
"It?" Sam asked confused as he raised an eyebrow at me. I was exhausted, and let out another small yawn. Sam pushed his laptop away as he studied me. His green eyes taking me in, not in the way Dean looked at me, nor Crowley, just studying me like a brother looks out for his sister. Protectively I guess is the word I'm looking for.
"The pain," I mumbled without realising what I was saying. "The constant pain in my heart, it's gone at the moment. I can actually be around him without it feeling like my heart is shattering into a million pieces..." I explained as my eyes scanned a page in front of me. My eyes were getting heavier and I found myself resting my chin on my right arm that laid in front of my laptop. I was exhausted and hadn't had a real rest since we ran from Dick.
"How can you handle being round him normally if it hurts you so bad?" Sam asked as I shrugged a little, yawning yet again. My brain was getting clouded with sleep, my whole body telling me it was time to take a break and rest.
"I love him..." I muttered as I blinked slowly and found myself closing my eyes as I heard Sam mutter something to himself about Dean and love.
I was stood in Bobby's kitchen, making both me and the old grump a cup of coffee. We were researching a nest of vampires who claimed that their all father had risen and given them the order to hunt their hearts out, turning as many as they could. I was looking at my phone as the kettle boiled. I was reading the last message Dean had sent me.
'I made it to Lisa's. She took me in. I'm safe. Keep your head down. Dean.' I sighed as I fought back the tears. I had forced him into her arms, Sam had said it was the best idea. With him gone, we all knew Dean deserved a chance at a normal life, but it didn't stop it hurting. I loved Dean, more than anything on this planet and I walked out on him.
"How's that drink coming girl?" Bobby yelled from the den, snapping me out of my thoughts.
"Jeez, I said two minutes... it's been thirty seconds!" I called back stuffing the phone into my pocket and turning to the fridge. I walked straight into someone's chest, bouncing off them and nearly falling to the floor. The only thing that kept me on my feet was the person grabbing my elbow.
"Whoa, always falling for me, huh baby girl?" Payton teased as I let out a small grunt and steadied myself. I looked up as he shot me a goofy grin on his stupid face.
"Well if you made noise like a normal person..." I huffed as I shoved him to the side and grabbed the milk out of the fridge.
"But I'm so much better than a normal person." Payton joked throwing me a wink as I poured the milk into our cups.
"Yeah, sure, keep telling yourself that sugar." I joked as he just pouted at me. I turned to face him, and noticed he had a small black stone tablet in his arm, cradling it to his chest. "You know, we've got these things call iPads now, store a lot more information than your pebble there."
"This isn't just a pebble hot stuff." Payton explained as his expression went serious for all of two seconds as he looked at the stone. He shot his head up and the goofy grin returned to his features. "I just came to check in. I need to go take care of some, um business so I'll be out of range for a few days. You think you can stay alive long enough without me?" Payton teased as I rolled my eyes and put the milk back in the fridge.
"Are you sure you and your pebble can survive a few days without me, you mean." I teased as I closed the fridge and turned to see Payton frowning at me. "What, it was a joke." I smirked as he just continued to frown at me. I lost my smile as I lent my back against the fridge.
"Stop reading those messages from him. You're just torturing yourself baby girl." Payton sighed as he looked over to me. His ocean blue eyes crashing like waves with the worry he had over me.
"I just... I just walked out on him. I just need to know he's ok." I shrugged plainly as I wrapped my arms over my stomach.
"He is. I know he is. Just... try and focus on this hot piece of ass instead." Payton joked as he walked forward and pressed a soft kiss on my forehead. I closed my eyes as he came so close and let the chuckle out. As I opened my eyes I realised he was gone.
"Girl, you talking to yourself?!" Bobby yelled from the den as I let out a small sigh.
"Do you want this coffee or not Bobby Singer?" I yelled back rolling my eyes as I picked up the cups.
"I heard you rolling them eyes!" Bobby yelled back making me chuckle a little as I walked out of the kitchen.
I woke laid on my arm, Sam's jacket resting over my shoulders. I slowly moved and saw it was morning and Sam was making two cups of coffee. He smirked at me as I sat up and offered him a sleepy smile.
"Every time." He muttered shaking his head a little.
"Pardon?" I asked stretching a little as his jacket sunk down my shoulders.
"Every time you're asleep, as soon as I make a coffee you wake up." Sam chuckled as he walked over and passed me a cup.
"You make the best coffee." I replied taking a small sip and looking around the room. The sun was shining through the stain glass window, Sam's make shift bed was still a mess and Dean was snoring softly in the corner. "What time did you crash?" I asked tearing my eyes back to Sam who sat down next to me.
"Um, round three I think." Sam answered as he took a sip of his drink. I scrubbed my face as my eyes landed on the tablet again.
"Pebble..." I mumbled as I remembered my dream.
"What?" Sam asked as I looked at him smiling.
"Pebble." I said louder as I got up and walked over to the tablet. "I know where I've seen something like this before." I explained as I looked over to Sam.
"Ok, I'll bite, where?" Sam asked sitting up in his chair.
"Payton." I answered, shaking my head a little. "He had something like this, not this one. He popped in with it in his arms. I called it a pebble and he said it was much more than that." I recalled my dream as I zoned out a little. Then shouted at me for not letting go of Dean. Not letting go...kinda like hanging around him after he's broken your heart Megan.
"Did he say what it was?" Sam asked before taking another sip of his coffee.
"No, and then he vanished. Never did ask him about it. Kinda wished I had now." I sighed scrubbing my face as the tap near me turned on. I turned glancing from the running water to Sam with a questioning look.
"He's been here all morning." Sam answered as I walked over and washed my face in the icy cold water, instantly waking me up.
"Bobby, just take it easy. You don't want to over do it." I muttered to myself as I dried my face. Sam started playing the news on his laptop as I looked at myself in the mirror. I looked the same. I looked exactly the same, there was no way to tell I was without my wolf powers. Let's hope it will be enough to bluff my way out of any situation. I walked back to the table, sitting down next to Sam as we watched the news playing.
"...At a lost to explain the continent-wide storm system that appeared seemingly out of nowhere, blanketing a good part of the nation in freak lightning displays." The reporter explained as we heard Dean grunt and get up. I shot him a quick smile as he looked at the pair of us, shaking his head a little. I felt Sam watching me, and turned to him. He just offered me a small smile before turning back to the news. "Here with Dr. Marlon Price of the U.S. Meteorological Survey at a press conference earlier today."
"Baffled? No, I'm not baffled." The Dr muttered as Dean washed his face in the sink. "Frankly, I'm offended. This is not the way weather behaves." He explained sounding truly outraged by the storm.
"Power outages and related damages to electronic equipment have been reported from as far east as Cape Cod…" The reporter continued as I let out a sarcastic chuckle. Only the Winchesters could release a storm no one can explain and disrupts the whole of-
"Bobby? Bobby, that you?" Dean called out making me and Sam turned to him.
"Think so." Sam explained holding up the EMF reader as it flashed red. "But that whole adventure at Roman's seems to have drained his batteries." He explained as Dean sighed and walked over to us.
"So, what? We start the storm heard 'round the world?" Dean asked as he looked at the news playing on Sam's laptop.
"We? I'm pretty sure it was all you Dean." I teased holding my hands up.
"We, you where here too sweetheart, makes you an accomplice" Dean beamed at me with one of his shit eating grins. I opened my mouth to argue but Dean was right. I closed my mouth, pouting a little as Sam let out a small chuckle.
"When we broke this thing," Sam explained tapping the stone tablet. "Open last night, every maternity ward within a hundred-mile radius got slammed."
"Yeah every woman in her last month of her pregnancy just inexplicitly went into labour." I added shaking my head at the tablet.
"Hmm." Dean hummed as he picked up the tablet examining it again. "This one goes out to all the ladies. So, heavyweight signs, omens – what do we got?" Dean asked putting the tablet back down and leaning on the table next to Sam
"We assume it's writing. It doesn't match anything in any book or online. But I've never seen anything like it, ever..." Sam trailed off and he glanced at me rising an eyebrow.
"But?" Dean asked looking from Sam to me. I flashed Dean a smirk before taking a sip of my coffee as I suddenly felt like I couldn't talk. Both Dean and Sam where watching me, studying the way I've seen them look at suspects before. I sometimes think they forget how intimidating the pair can be.
"But, I've seen something like this before." I answered looking at the table and away from the intense stairs both Sam and Dean were throwing at me.
"Where, do you know what it is?" Dean jumped in as I looked up and met his green eyes. There was something so captivating about Dean's eyes, once you got caught in his gaze it always felt so damn hard to look away.
"I don't know what it is." I answered as I felt that pang of pain in my heart. I blinked, looking away from Dean and gazing to the tablet instead. "Payton had one similar a while back. He never told me what it was, or how many there was. Just that it was important." I answered as I heard Dean sigh loudly.
"All right, so big daddy Chomper lands here, he grabs himself some Dick... and then he starts secretly underwriting university departments, pouring money into digs – all for this. Why?" Dean asked turning to us as I brushed some hair out of my face.
"No clue. We do know that he will be tearing new ones until he gets it back, though. Look, we got to take a minute, hole up somewhere safe, find out what we've got." Sam suggested looking from me to Dean. I couldn't argue it was a solid plan, although it did mean spending even more time with Dean. As long as I was almost human, I could manage.
"Rufus' cabin, then?" Dean asked Sam and I got up.
"Yeah." Sam sighed as we both started to pack up our things. I rubbed my left shoulder as I realised this sling was going to drive me insane. I had next to no use of my left arm and it meant doing anything was a major pain in the arse.
"This time, I'm doing the shopping." Dean teased as he turned and started to chuck his things into his duffel bag. I grabbed my backpack and slipped my laptop into it as Sam's phone began to ring.
"Ever notice how everyone always calls Sam?" I joked as he frowned looking down at his phone.
"It's Meg." Sam announced as he answered the phone. Dean stood up shooting me a worried look as we waited to see why she called. We hadn't heard from Meg since we left her with Castiel in the mental hospital. "What?" Sam barked down the phone. I moved closer to Sam so that I could hear what Meg was saying.
"What up, Bullwinkle? Just a little FYI call. Your boy's awake." Meg greeted Sam as my eyes went wide.
"What?" Sam cried out down the phone before moving the speaker away from his mouth. "Cass is awake." Sam explained as Dean rushed over to us.
"When?!" Dean cried out just as surprised as the rest of us as Sam put the hone onto speaker, holding it up so that everyone could hear it. "When?" Dean asked into the phone.
"Last night about eight." Meg answered sounding bored.
"So what's with the delay? Why didn't you call us sooner?" I asked into the phone hoping that she had a good reason to hold off calling us. My mind flashed with a million different scenarios and none of them were good.
"I've been busy with Cass. He's just a tad different than when he dozed off, 'kay?" Meg explained with a sigh.
"What do you mean, different?" Dean asked looking worried for his best friend.
"Hey, Seacrest, guess what – not a nurse. Just playing one on TV. Want answers? Start driving." Meg barked down the phone before hanging up. We all let out a collective sigh as Sam put his phone away. Cass being awake had to be a good thing, but it was strange that he decided to wake up last night of all the nights.
"Great. So, Indiana?" Sam asked looking between me and Dean.
"Sounds like it to me." I sighed already getting a bad feeling where Meg was concerned.
"Yeah. Eight o'clock last night." Dean muttered as his eyes landed on the stone tablet.
"Yeah. Same time we opened up that thing." Sam sighed as we all looked at the tablet. What the hell is this thing? How the hell did it wake Cass up and just what the hell have we gotten ourselves mixed up in now...
With Dean driving it really didn't take long for us to reach the hospital in Indiana. Walking into the building I really wished that I could sense if there was any trouble heading our way. I hung back as the guys walked in front of me talking about Cass.
"We raced all the way here, and now I don't know. I can't say I'm fired up to see what's left of the guy." Dean sighed as we walked round a corner heading towards the nurses station to find Meg.
"You think he remembers at all?" Sam asked just as worried about our friend and what state he was going to be in.
"I hope not." I whispered softly as Sam glanced over his shoulder to me. I was looking at my sling as I fallowed the duo. I saw how badly Sam hurt from his memories, adding that pile of crap to an already guilt ridden Cass; I couldn't imagine what kind of being we were about to walk into.
"That, and I'm guessing whatever kind of hell baggage he lifted off of your plate. It's not gonna be pretty." Dean answered Sam as if he hadn't heard me speak.
"Hey. Excuse me, gentlemen, but it's way past visiting hours." A deep voice said as the guys stopped in front of me, clearly blocking my view from the guy. Dean put his hand behind his back, waving for me to hide and find Cass by myself if needs be.
"It's okay, Abel. I've been expecting them. Hello, boys and Megan." Meg purred as she walked out of a room and smirked at all of us. As soon as my eyes landed on Meg I frowned. She wasn't the most reliable demon I had ever met, and I always knew in the back of her mind she was working an angle to get one over everyone. We fallowed her silently to Castiel's room. As we reached the door Meg paused folding her arms over her chest, nodding her head for us to go in front of her. As we walked in Cass was stood looking out of the window with his trench coat on.
"Hey, Cass." Dean greeted his old friend softly. Cass turned to face all of us with the expression I was so used to seeing on him. He looked like a house plant, but he looked like our Cass.
"Hello, Dean." Cass spoke in his monotone voice as we all gave him a small smile. "Sam." Cass greeted the younger Winchester.
"Hey, Castiel." Sam smiled as Cass turned to me.
"Megan." Cass gave me a small smile which I returned feeling a hell of a lot better seeing him and knowing that he recognised us.
"Look at you, walkin' and talkin'. That's – that's great, right?" Dean beamed as Cass walked over to us, pointing his finger at Dean.
"Pull my finger." Cass said in his monotone voice. I did a double blink in confusion as I glanced at the guys. They looked as confused as me.
"What?" Dean asked utterly confused. Dean glanced at me and Sam to see if he had heard Cass right.
"My finger – pull it." Cass nodded to his finger before looking back at Dean. Dean smirked sarcastically and quickly lost it before glancing over his shoulder to the rest of us. He wiped a hand over his mouth and turned back to Cass, pulling his finger. Suddenly all the lights burst and went out, along with the window and light fixtures. Cass burst out in a wide smile and started to laugh as the rest of us just looked at each other utterly lost. Oh yeah... Castiel's change just a tad... a smidgin some might say...
One thing was clear, Cass had cracked. He went on a rant about how he remembered everything and how wonderful the earth was. Meg brought a new bulb and turned on a lamp near us as I just sat on the edge of Castiel's bed, trying to take it all in. Sam sat on the edge of the bed frame and Dean stood next to me. Meg walked over and lent against the far wall folding her arms over her chest.
"Okay, just hang on, Cass. Wait. Let us catch up to you for a second." Dean sighed as we watched Cass just look out of the window again.
"So, you're saying you remember who you are, what you are." Sam explained as I cradled my left arm closer to my chest. I couldn't imagine what Castiel's mind must have been like.
"Yes. Of course." Cass explained before turning to face all of us. "Oh. Outside today, in the garden, I followed a honeybee. I saw the route of flowers. It's all right there, the whole plan. There's nothing to add." He beamed as he explained the flowers and bees to us. Dean let out a small sigh and glanced back to me and Sam for help.
"You might want to add a little Thorazine." Sam added sarcastically as I just looked at Cass. He tilted his head to one side as he looked at my arm in the sling. I offered him a sad smile, which he returned with a big happy smile. I was starting to get a little freaked out about how happy this version of Castiel was.
"Right? He's been like the naked guy at the rave ever since he woke up. Totally useless." Meg sighed as Cass turned to her, the same big happy smile plastered over his face.
"Will you look at her? My caretaker. All of that thorny pain. So beautiful." He sighed, something I thought was love shining in his eyes.
"We've been over this. I don't like poetry. Put up or shut up." Meg cringed as Cass showed his affection towards her. It was sweet, in the back of my mind I was grinning like an idiot because of how sweet he was being towards her. Cass turned his attention straight to me and I sat up straight, worried that the goofy grin was on my face.
"I healed your arm." Cass announced as everyone looked at my sling. I looked at my arm, and shivered as I remembered the black goo Dick managed to pull out.
"You did... but not fully." I answered as I looked up at Cass with a wide smile.
"I can heal it now if you wish." He replied walking towards me. I shot to my feet and held my hand up stopping him.
"No, no it's fine really!" I cried out feeling everyone look at me. Out of the corner of my eye I saw Dean looked just as confused at me as he had been looking to Cass. From the other edge of my sight I saw Sam give a small smirk, he was happy about it. Meg was just entertained by the attention taken off her.
"But I can fully heal you now." Cass sighed in confusion as he looked at my sling and then back into my eyes.
"I'm... honestly, it's fine... wouldn't want to wear you out." I lied sitting back down on the edge of the bed again.
"Okay. So, Cass, you said you woke up last night?" Sam spoke up quickly changing the topic so that Dean couldn't ask why I didn't want to be healed.
"Yes. I heard a ping that pierced me, and, well, you wouldn't have heard it unless you were an angel at the time." Cass explained with a small shrug as Sam lent over the bed and picked up the bag he brought with him.
"That's also when we opened this." Sam announced as he passed the bag to Cass. Cass reached into the bag and pulled out the tablet.
"Oh. Of course. Now I understand." Cass smiled with a cheeky smile aimed at all three of us.
"Understand what exactly Cass?" I asked confused, as Cass looked down at the tablet in his hands.
"You were the ones. Well... I guess that makes sense." He chuckled to himself as he glanced up at all three of us like we'd done something big.
"What makes sense?" Dean asked from the side me, just as confused.
"If someone was going to free the Word from the vault of the earth, it would end up being you three. Oh, I love you guys." Cass beamed as he pulled Sam and Dean into a hug. I shuffled back, just in time but Cass was beaming at me as he hugged the pair.
"Oh. Uck. Okay. All right. Okay." Dean sighed and I knew he was rolling his eyes by the way he was speaking. I heard Sam pat Cass on the back slightly before they all pulled out of the hug.
"Yeah, yeah. You- you said something about The Word. Is that what's written on there?" Sam asked as Cass held the tablet in his hands again.
"Did you know that a cat's penis is sharply barbed along its shaft?" He asked looking from Sam to Dean. "I know for a fact the females were not consulted about that." Cass tilted his head to me before turning and looking out of the window again. Dean let out a frustrated sigh as he ran a hand over his mouth.
"Cass, please, we're losing ground out there, okay? We need your help. Can you not see that?" Dean pleaded as Cass kept his back to us, he was examining the tablet in the moonlight.
"This is the handwriting of Metatron." Cass chuckled as if he was remembering Metatron.
"Metatron?" Sam scoffed out, looking at Cass like he lost all his marbles. "You saying a Transformer wrote that?!" Sam scoffed out shaking his head.
"No. That's Megatron." Dean turned back to his brother as I smirked. Unfortunately Gethin thought Megatron was a good nickname for me when I was younger, so of course I knew who the transformer was.
"What?" Sam called out clueless to his big brother.
"The Transformer– it's Megatron." Dean explained shooting Sam a look like he should have already known this.
"Dean's right. Megatron's the leader of the bad guys in Transformers." I added with a shrug turning to Sam too.
"What?!" Sam called out looking at the pair of us like we were insane.
"Met-A-Tron. He's an angel. He's the scribe of God. He took down dictation when creation was being formed." Castiel explained as he turned back to face us again.
"And that's the Word of God?" Sam asked as we all looked at the stone in Castiel's hands.
"One of them, yes." Cass nodded with a small smile.
"Uh... Well, what's it say, then?" Sam asked as he got up and stood by my side. Cass smiled as he looked at the stone and turned so we could read over his shoulder.
"Uh... Tree?" He glanced over his shoulder to look at all three of us. "Horse? Fiddler crab? I can't read it. It wasn't meant for angels. Only Metatron and Raziel could read it." Cass explained as we all let out a heavy sigh. We knew what it was, but not what it said, nor why Dick wanted it so badly.
"Okay, this all sounds bad. What are you three jackasses doing with the Word of God? Let me see that thing." Meg huffed as she walked over to the side of Cass, holding her hand out for him to pass it to her.
"Back off, Meg." Dean growled as he moved to stand opposite her at the other side of Castiel.
"Come on, it's my ass, too." Meg argued, still holding her hand out for Cass to pass her the tablet.
"Back off." Dean growled again, lowering his voice more.
"Damn it! Enough of this demons are second-class citizens crap!" Meg yelled back, just as angry as Dean was. I noticed how uncomfortable Cass as looking. His eyes were darted to the floor as he held the stone closer to his chest.
"Um... guys?" I spoke up as the pair ignored me and continued to glare at each other.
"Don't like conflict." Castiel announced, and disappeared in a blink of an eye. The tablet he was holding onto fell to the floor breaking into three pieces.
"Uh..." Sam hummed out as he looked at the stone on the floor.
"I tried to warn you guys." I muttered looking from Meg to Dean.
"What the hell was that?" Dean snapped looking at Meg like she had caused it all.
"You heard him. He doesn't like conflict. He's down in the dayroom now. I guarantee it." She sighed crossing her arms over her chest and shaking her head.
"All right, I'll go handle Cass. Sam, will you please pick up the Word of God?" Dean asked looking from me to the others.
"Yeah." Sam sighed as I fallowed Dean out into the corridor.
"Dean, wait up a second!" I called after him, Dean paused, turning to face me. He looked exhausted with the whole situation. Castiel was a good friend, seeing him so broken was really knocking all of us for six. But Dean was his best friend... his closest friend, I couldn't begin to imagine how Dean was feeling over it all.
"Look, Cass is..." I tried to find the right words but my mind drew a blank.
"An extra from Clockwork Orange, yeah I know." Dean grunted as he ran a hand over his short hair.
"Subtle." I teased as his eyes met mine again. I bit my lip as a second of pain fluttered through my heart. "Look, just talk to him with kid gloves, please? The last thing we need is him going further off the reservation because he's upset." I begged looking up into those emerald eyes. Dean looked into my eyes, thinking about something. I opened my mouth to ask him just what was on his mind when he blinked and looked down the corridor.
"Kid gloves... I'll, I'll try my best." Dean sighed before turning and walking off towards the day room.
I walked back into the room as Meg stood over Sam. It looked like Sam had put the last of the three pieces back into the bag as he looked up at her.
"I deserve to know, Sam." Meg sighed as I could see Sam was weighing up telling her what was really going on.
"Because we trust you so much Meg." I spoke up as I walked into the room. Meg sighed a she threw me a sarcastic smile.
"Trust me or not, doesn't matter if I've got little old Cass on my side." She smirked as I shook my head.
"Now, I know your not threatening me with Cass, because I could quiet easy pull Crowley up on speed dial." I threatened looking back into her eyes. She paused, her eyes drilling into my skull as I smirked at her.
"You're lying." She spat as Sam got to his feet.
"Am I?" I asked reaching into my pocket. The pair of us entered this massive glare off, neither of us willing to blink first. I sure as hell wasn't going to let Meg force my hand and I got the feeling she felt the same.
"Enough!" Sam snapped looking at the pair of us. "Look Meg, we're not going to tell you what's going on ok? Just drop it." Sam sighed as he ran a hand through his hair.
"Okay, fine. I'll hit the road, then." Meg sighed as she pushed past me and headed for the door. "Let me just go get my angel." Meg muttered as she headed out of the room. Sam looked at me with wide eyes as I moved to the side and let him reason with her. My reasoning would have ended with me calling Crowley or trying to stab her, something Cass really wouldn't be happy with. I let out a heavy sigh as I walked over to the bag and bobbed down. I picked up a piece of the tablet and looked at it.
"God's Word huh? And we've had it twenty four hours, before it was smashed into pieces. This, this is why we don't have any nice things." I muttered as I chucked the piece into the bag when I heard footstep behind me. I turned to see a lamp connect with my skull. "Hey!" I yelled as everything blurred and the ground came violently towards me. As I crashed onto the ground a light grey blur grabbed the bag by the side of me.
"I'm sorry, I'm so so sorry." A male voice mumbled as the blur rushed out of the room. I winched as I closed my eyes and pressed a hand to my head where it hurt the most.
"Son of a bitch!" I cursed as I sat up, rubbing the side of my head.
"What the hell?" Sam cried out as he reached the door frame.
"Someone tried to knock me out, they got the bag. Went that way." I huffed pointing in the direction the blur went. Sam took off running as I got up and saw Meg stood there with her lips pursed together in a smirk. "Don't." I growled as I walked up to her and we fallowed Sam out into the grounds.
I walked with Meg as we saw Sam running after a small Asian kid, who was clutching the bag like his life depended on it. The kid looked no more than seventeen. He was actually proving a bit of a challenge for Sam to catch. If he hadn't just tried to knock me out and stole the Word of God I would have laughed at the situation.
"That's who nearly knocked you out?" Meg chuckled as we watch Sam chase him all over the field.
"Hey!" Sam yelled out as the kid zig zagged to avoid Sam.
"No, stop! Leave me alone!" The kid screamed running like he was in a slasher film and Sam was the big bad that was going to kill him.
"Yeah, well he caught me by surprise." I huffed as I glanced at Meg, rubbing the side of my head that ached like a bitch. I could already feel the lump, the kid had a swing on him that was for sure.
"If you say so." She smirked enjoying it a little too much.
"Yeah well laugh it up..." I huffed shaking my head a little as Sam nearly fell onto the ground as the kid jumped out of his grasp. We both noticed the kid heading towards us. I took a glance at her and we had a plan formed. We both moved out of the view of the kid and waited for him to get close enough. When I heard his heavy breathing I held out my right arm, the kid ran straight into my arm and collapsed onto the floor. Before he had time to register what was happening both me and Meg put a foot each onto him, holding him onto the ground.
"Not a demon nor a chomper." Meg confirmed, glancing at me before we looked down at the terrified kid.
"What the hell are you?" I growled, pushing my foot down just a little.
"I'm a... K-Kevin Tran. I'm in advanced placement. P-p-please don't kill me." Kevin stuttered as Sam jogged over to us. Kevin was terrified if us, I didn't need my wolf side to see it. I was pretty sure if we had really put on the bad guy act he would have burst into tears.
"We're not gonna kill you." Sam huffed as he hauled Kevin onto his feet. I watched as Sam tried to take the bag away from Kevin, but Kevin refused to let go.
"I'm sorry." Kevin answered as Sam started to really pull on the bag. He was just shaking the hell out of Kevin, because Kevin had like an iron grip on the bag.
"Hey kid, you might want to let go, like now." Meg warned as we watched Kevin's eyes go wide in fear. He shot Meg a terrified look before glancing at me and then Sam.
"I-I'm sorry. I... I don't – I don't know why, but I can't let go of this." Kevin pleaded, almost in tears as he held the bag close to his chest.
We didn't know what to do for the best, so we decided to take him back to Castiel's room and talk to him there. As soon as we got in the room Sam motioned for Kevin to sit on the bed. Kevin did without saying a word. He still refused to let go of the bag, he held it to his chest as we filed into the room. Sam stood in front of him, towering over the kid. Meg stood near but behind Sam crossing her arms over her chest as I stood at the bottom of the bed, watching the kid like a hawk.
"You really stepped in it, kid. Oh, man." Meg hummed as she shook her head at Kevin.
"All I know is, this is- it's for me. I'm supposed to keep it." Kevin explained, still fearful of all three of us.
"Good luck." Meg muttered as I shared a glance with Sam.
"But you don't know what it is?" Sam asked Kevin. In return Kevin just shook his head. Sam looked over to me confused. I gave him the smallest shrug as I turned my attention back to the bit of a kid sat on the bed.
"Maybe you should open the bag and take a look." I suggested as Kevin's head snapped to me.
"I, I'm so so s-sorry I hit you with the lamp. I-I just had to take the bag." Kevin stammered as he looked at me so guilty. I bought that the kid didn't mean me any harm. I saw the smirk cross Meg's lips as I forced myself not to glare at her.
"Just open the bag kid." I sighed nodding my head to the bag in his hands. Kevin lowered the bag to his lap and unzipped it. He picked up two of the pieces and fit them back together. As they touched they sealed back into one piece with a brilliant bright light.
"Huh." Sam sighed as he glanced over to me. We were both wondering what the hell Kevin was, and just how he made the tablet whole again. We watched as Kevin studied the whole tablet.
"It's writing." Kevin announced as he glanced up to us. I rolled my eyes as I lent against the end of the bed.
"Yeah. Yeah, we get that." Sam sighed as Kevin looked back down at the tablet.
"What's Leviathan?" Kevin asked looking back up at me and Sam. I shot Sam a surprised look, one he mirrored back to me. If the tablet was all about Leviathans, it made sense why Dick was so damn keen to get his mitts on it.
"What? You can read it? Is that what it says?" Sam cried out looking to Kevin to give us all more details.
"Sort of. It hurts a little. Like looking through somebody else's glasses, but I think it... it's about Leviathan, how it came to be. God locked him up far away, right? Like in jail... because they're so... they're... they're real, aren't they?" Kevin asked looking up at us as all the colour drained from his cheeks.
"Um, yeah, Kevin." I answered softly. "They're very much real and they're here.. on Earth." I answered throwing him a sad smile. I was trying to soften the blow as much as I could, but I could only imagine what the God tablet said about Leviathans.
"Does it say anything about how to kill them? 'Cause that's– that's kind of been a problem." Sam asked with a little sarcastic laugh as we turned to Kevin. He nodded looking down at the tablet in his hands.
"I don't know. It's not like reading reading. It- it's hard to focus on it too long." Kevin sighed as he continued to try and focus on the tablet.
"Megan, Sam. Something's up." Meg said as the lights flickered above us. I turned to Meg and saw her eyes were black.
"What?" Sam asked glancing at Meg.
"Trouble?" I asked as Kevin looked up at Meg too. He started to scream and scrambled backwards up the bed to be as far away from Meg as he could get.
"Kevin, breathe. It's ok." I tried to calm Kevin down as I moved to the other side of the bed. I pulled my gun out from the back of my jeans and looked around for the threat Meg sensed.
"Kevin, hey, hey, hey. Kevin." Sam tried to keep him calm too as Meg back up towards me. Suddenly all the lampshades in the room and corridor exploded as a woman appeared in the room. From her appearance it was easy to see she was an angel. Great... just want we need right now. Freaking Angels.
"Demon and a half-breed!" She hissed towards me and Meg as we heard a flutter of wings and another man appear in the room. The female angel raised her hand and sent Meg flying into the wall. Seconds later I felt myself crash backwards into the window. I let out a small grunt as I glanced over to Meg. Why is it always me? Why do I get lumped with the demons when angels come round to play? And is that glass in my back... because damn it, it hurts.
"Megan are you ok?" Sam called out as I groaned again.
"Been better..." I sighed, glaring at the female angel with all I had.
"A demon whore and a Winchester... again." The female angel muttered as Sam took a step towards the nearly hyperventilating Kevin. "Step away from the Prophet!" She barked at Sam as I got to my feet, my back aching like a bitch. Both me and Sam looked at Kevin shocked. Prophet? Did she just say... shit!
"Who, me?" Kevin asked looking round at all of us speechless.
"Sole keeper of the word on earth, we are here to take you." The female angel explained, looking only at Kevin.
"What do you mean, take?" Kevin asked terrified, hugging the bag more.
"Kill the demon and his lover. Then take care of that abomination." The female angel ordered looking over to the male one.
"That's not how it- We're not-" Meg muttered holding her side as the male angel walked over to her, holding his hand out. I stepped out, to try and stop him from getting Meg.
"Listen dude... we don't want-" I started to say when he waved his hand and sent me back crashing into the broken window again. I grunted from the floor as I watched the angel head straight for Meg. As he got closer to Meg, she slashed out with an angel blade cutting his palm. This made the male angel cower back as light shone out of the cut.
"Where did you get that?!" The female angel practically screaming at Meg. Before Meg could answer there was another rustling of wings and Cass appeared in the room. I slouched back into the broken window as the tension seemed to triple in the room.
"Castiel?" The male angel asked confused. Cass smiled to the guy.
"Hi." He greeted his old friend.
"You're alive?" The male angel asked astonished but happy at the same time.
"You." The female angel growled with venom as she looked at Cass.
"Hello, Hester." Cass offered the woman a warm smile. One she didn't return.
"You smote thousands in Heaven. You gave a big, scary speech. Then you were gone. What the hell was that?!" Hester the female angel growled as she stormed over to Castiel.
"Rude, for one thing." Castiel replied with a shrug.
"Where have you been?" The male angel asked, calmer than Hester.
"Oh, Inias. Hester, I... I know you want something– answers. I... I wish it could be that… There are still many things I can teach you. I can offer, um, well, perspective. Here." Cass explained holding his finger out to Hester. "Pull my finger." Cass added nodding a little for her to pull his finger. Hester just stared at Castiel, refusing to pull his finger. Cass glanced at all of us nervously. "Uh... Uh... Meg will- will get another light, and I'll- I'll blow it out again. And, well, this time, it'll be funny, and- and we'll all look back and laugh." I could see he was struggling to reason with Hester, struggling to lighten the mood. He hated conflict it was easy to see on his expression.
"You're insane." Hester barked out shaking her head a little.
"Hey!" Dean yelled from the doorway. "Heads up, Sunshine!" He added as the whole room filled with a brilliant bright white light. I covered my eyes from the light and as it dulled I realised Dean had banished the angels to the outfield again. "All angels blown back to their corners. We got like three, four hours tops." Dean sighed as he walked into the room looking at all of us. Sam pointed to the knife Meg was holding as she helped me back onto my feet.
"Meg, where did you get that?" Sam asked as I stood up by myself. My back was still aching and as I looked over to the broken window I saw some of my blood on it.
"A lot of angels died this year." Meg shrugged as it was normal to have an angel blade.
"That your blood?" Dean asked looking over to the window.
"Think so." I groaned as I looked over my shoulder to a piece of glass sticking out. "Gonna need stitches- damn it." I huffed trying to reach for the glass sticking out of my back.
"WHAT'S HAPPENING?! WHAT. IS. HAPPENING?!" Kevin screamed at all of us as he started to hyperventilate again.
"What is that?" Dean asked calmly as he looked at Sam.
"It's, uh... Kevin Tran. He's, uh, in advanced placement." Sam explained as he looked down at Kevin.
Sam calmed Kevin down, getting him to realise that we were the good guys and we would keep him safe. Meg grabbed some medical supplies and Dean helped me take my jacket and shirt off. I was wearing a vest top, so Dean could pull the glass out without me having to take my top off. We sat on the edge of the bed, our back to Kevin and Sam.
"One, two-" Dean pulled the glass out and I bit down hard on my lip.
"Ow ow ow ow ow! Damn it." I hissed as I worked through the pain.
"Yeah, it's going to need some stitches. Sit still." Dean sighed as I felt his fingers touch my skin. I closed my eyes to repress the shiver that wanted to run through me.
"I still don't get why you don't just... you know." Meg asked as she lent against the broken window.
"Shut up Meg." I huffed as I felt the alcohol wipe brush against my skin. I screwed my face up as the pain darted from the cut through me.
"You'd be all healed by now." She added as I glared at her. "Fine." She backed down holding her hands up in defeat. "But we might need that other side of you soon." She sighed as she walked over to the door.
"Just needs a couple, wont take long." Dean spoke softly as I felt the needle piece my skin. My heart was racing as I felt Dean being as gentle as he could be, pulling the needle through my skin. I closed my eyes as his scent seemed to fill me. Being this close to him, he consumed me whether he knew it or not. He had a hold on me, one I knew the longer I spent this close to him, the hard it would be to break. I felt the pain twang at my heart and gasped a little in pain. "You ok?" Dean almost whispered because he was so close to my ear. I turned my head to look at him over my shoulder and was captured by his beautiful green eyes. The love and concern were too vivid for Dean to hide, at least with me being this close to him.
"I..." I opened my mouth but couldn't find the words. Instead I felt the heat rise in my cheeks as I blushed. I looked away as Dean finished the last stitch and placed a bandage over the top.
"All better." He hummed as he collected the supplies and moved them out of the way. I eased my shirt and jacket back on. Kevin came and sat down next to me, hugging the tablet still.
"So, these Leviathans – these monsters are real. And angels with wings?" Kevin asked confused and scared about everything supernatural.
"No. Uh... no wings. No anything." Sam explained as he sat near the broken window.
"No junk. Junkless." Dean sighed as he sat on the window ledge next to Sam. "So, Kevin, you can, uh, read the chicken scratch on the God rock, huh?" He asked looking down at the tablet.
"Uh, I…" Kevin started to answer but trailed off.
"That is back in one piece, I see. And you're saying that there's some sort of a How to punch Dick recipe in there somewhere?" Dean asked clapping his hands together looking at Kevin for answers.
"I-I don't know what you're saying, but it seems kind of like an in case of emergency note. What did they mean by prophet?" Kevin asked looking at all three of us lost.
"Oh, no." Dean sighed looking from me to Sam. "Really?"
"So Hester the bitch angel from heaven seems to think." I sighed, glancing at Kevin who looked lost about it all.
"Yeah, that's what the angel said." Sam answered shrugging as they both looked at Kevin.
"I don't want to be a prophet." Kevin spoke up as if he was a three year being told it was his bedtime, not a prophet of the Lord.
"No. You don't at all." Dean sighed shaking his head. I let out another sigh and felt my back ache as the last of the adrenaline left my body.
"Um.. as awesome as getting smashed into a window is, and I'm not complaining here, but shouldn't we get moving?" I asked from the side of Kevin as everyone looked at me.
"Gentlemen, she has a point. We've got to start running and hiding. Or do you want to tangle with those wing nuts twice?" Meg added as she walked over to the side of me.
"I'm sorry. Did you say we?" Dean scoffed as Meg looked at him.
"I'm on the angels' radar now. You think I don't need a little safety in numbers?" She asked folding her arms over her chest.
"All right, we'll go to Rufus' cabin. Kid can do his book report there." Dean sighed pushing himself off the ledge and heading for the door.
We hit the road, me, Meg and Kevin in the back, Sam and Dean up front. The whole drive Kevin refused to let go of his bag, even when he was sound asleep. The rest of us couldn't sleep. We knew we had to get as far away from the angels as possible because they were going to be so pissed when then reached us again. We had been driving most of the night and into the morning when Dean pulled over into a gas station. Sam went to get supplies and Meg went to get something to keep her entertained the rest of the drive. Dean was filling the car up with gas as Kevin slept through it all. I climbed out of the car and stretched. I carefully took my arm out of the sling and moved it around a little as I lent against the hood of the car.
"How you feeling?" Dean asked as I shot him a small smile. I careful returned my arm to the sling and let out a small sigh.
"Getting there. Everything is healing... just taking time." I admitted pulling my hair loose and shaking it free.
"I need to ask you something, and don't get pissy with me, alright?" Dean asked as he continued to fill up the car.
"Ok, I'll try not to." I admitted watching Dean. He darted his eyes to the car before looking straight into my eyes again.
"Why didn't you let Cass heal you?" Dean asked squinting at me a little. I sat there looking into his eyes for a beat. For us. So I could be around you again. So it didn't rip my heart out to be stuck in the same car with you for hours at a time. Because I love you, and it's killing me staying away from you even I know how badly you've hurt me. A million other reasons. "Megan?" Dean asked softly, breaking me from my thoughts. I cleared my throat as I pushed away from the hood and walked over to him. I stopped just short of his reach and flashed him a nervous smile. My stomach was rolling in butterflies as I felt that blush reach my cheeks again.
"I..." I spoked to his chest, finding it the easiest way to explain myself without those green orbs burning into my soul. Although saying that I could still feel his gaze weighing heavy on me. "I'm human, more or less. It, it means my senses aren't as heightened as they normally are." I paused as I quick a quick glance to his face. The sun was shining at just the right angle and his hair was glowing, his whole face seemed to be glowing as he nodded, looking confused.
"Yeah, I'd think that would be a bad thing right now." Dean explained as I looked back down to his chest.
"Normally, it would..." I sighed pushing my hair out of my face. "I'm all tangled up here Dean..."
"I don't understand." Dean answered honestly. I let out chuckle, I barely understood myself.
"When I left you... my heart was, is, broken. It shattered into a thousand pieces. I felt it. In my heart, I actually felt my heart break. My wolf side, it amplified it... I thought... I didn't know what to think. I just knew it hurt to think of you, be around you." I paused collecting my thoughts as I let out a heavy sigh. "Working with you, trying to help Sammy... it killed me. Being that close to you was killing me. Then... then we went after Dick and the drive. I had all this pain I was carrying. The only way I could get away was to stay away from you... from us." I admitted still talking to his chest.
"Megan... I... I had no idea." Dean whispered out as I just nodded. I looked up and flashed him a big smile.
"I'm not in pain right now." I explained as he shot me a small smile. "I'm almost human, and it doesn't hurt to be around you. Work with you. As far as I can tell... it's this is going to sound stupid but... Look. You and me, we were it. For me, you were the only person I ever wanted to be with. You broke my heart, literally. The wolf side, the connect we share because of it... it was killing me. It was as if you died Dean. I mean died for good. I just couldn't function." I sighed out feeling like I had over shared with my ex husband. "I'm good like I am for now. I know the pain will come back, but I'm kinda hoping that it's going to be after I'm away from you again. That's why I didn't want Cass to heal me. I just wouldn't be able to stick around and help out." I shrugged softly leaning back on the hood.
"I... I never knew..." Dean let out a heavy sigh as he put the gas back and lent on the hood next to me. He glanced at me over his shoulder and let out another sigh. "I felt it too." He spoke up, just loud enough for me to hear him. "I... I felt your heart break when we talked outside the cabin after Sammy."
"What?" I turned to him confused. I couldn't understand what he was saying. Sure I was upset, but he can't mean...
"I can't explain it. I just, I felt it break... I don't know how to fix it Megan. I don't know how to make you whole again and damn it I really want to." He grunted pushing away from the hood and standing in front of me. He put his hands either side of me as he lent in closer. "It's killing me too." He admitted as I saw him blink back some tears.
"Dean..." I felt my heart flutter as I saw how vulnerable he was. How lost and scared; how desperate he was to make things right between us. I grabbed hold of his shoulder and pulled me to him. I wrapped my good arm around him as I felt his arms snake around my waist pulling me closer to him. I couldn't speak. I didn't know how to make things right. I just knew he needed to know that he wasn't alone. That even if we weren't a we, I'd be here for him. I needed to hold him, be held by him. The hug expressed more than either of us could really say. After we hugged, we sat on the hood of the car side by side. We talked about nothing, nothing serious. I caught Dean glancing at me now and again, and I couldn't help myself from glancing at him occasionally. Something felt different sitting next to Dean. I still hadn't forgiven him for cheating on me. I wasn't sure I could ever really do that. But I felt like I could move on, that somehow me and Dean could at least still be friends. Sure it was going to take some time, and I really did need to spend some solid time away from anything Winchester related but we'd be friends again. It was a settling feeling, a sign of hope for me.
"I mean, seriously, who wouldn't want to drive dune buggie?" I asked as Dean laughed shaking his head at me as Sam walked over to us. He shot me a warm smile as I noticed him heading our way.
"So you got on that buggie?" Dean asked smirking, and I think he already knew the answer.
"Damn straight I did!" I replied as we laughed together. Sam paused as he reached us, just watching the pair of us smile at the other. I noticed the smile it brought Sam's face.
"Hey." He smiled passing me and Dean a hot drink each. "So, we got another wrinkle. Uh, looks like Kevin's gone missing... and it's gone federal. Yeah." Sam explained loosing his smile.
"Awesome. You guys sure know how to pull me into some crap." I teased before taking a sip of my tea.
"Us? You bring enough trouble by yourself sugar." Dean teased back as I shoved him with my shoulder as we both smirked at each other.
"Nowhere near as much as you do sweet cheeks." I laughed shaking my head at him. I felt Sam watching the pair of us as we continued to play fight.
"Where's Meg?" Sam asked looking around confused. Meg walked over to us looking a little flustered.
"I'm here." She blurted as she looked over to all three of us.
"Great, so now we're kidnappers?" Dean sighed as he stood up from the hood of the car.
"Not if we shut up about it. Why? Who'd we kidnap?" Meg asked looking at the three of us clueless.
I was sat in the middle between a sleeping Kevin and a untrustworthy Meg. My life was brilliant. Just brilliant. Dean was still driving with Sam trying to find anything he could on the Word of God and how the hunt for Kevin was going. I laid with my head back, my eyes closed as I just thought about Dean. I wanted to test the waters and see if it still hurt to think of him. His amazing green orbs, the kind that see straight into your eyes. That cheeky smile, how many women lost their shit over his grin? I know I have. That stubble. Definitely a good choice...The way he crinkles his nose after kissing me. The way his strong arms wrap around me in the middle of the night and he's sound asleep. The way he pulls me closer, protecting me even in his sleep. Nothing. No pain. I opened my eyes and caught Dean glancing in the rear view mirror. I shot him a warm smile he returned. But he cheated on me... slept with that... bitch! Sure it hurt to think of Dean cheating on me, but no where near as painful as it had been. I frowned looking down at my lap. Am I getting over Dean Winchester? I noticed Kevin wake up and looked over to me and Meg.
"Oh, God." He cried out, hugging the bag closer to his chest.
"What?" Meg asked confused as we both looked at Kevin confused.
"Nothing. Nothing. Just... my life... my future..." Kevin muttered as Meg's phone rang and she answered it holding up a finger to Kevin. "…my girlfriend... my mom's car." I couldn't help but feel bad for Kevin, in some way he reminded me of my little brother Doyle. They both had their lives planned out, going to do great things when the supernatural messed it all up. I felt a pang of sorrow hit me as I thought about Doyle. He would have been Kevin's age about now. I let out a small sigh as Meg talked to whoever called.
"Yeah. Yeah, Castiel. It's me." Meg purred as she looked out of the window.
"Cass? Where? Where is he?" Dean demanded looking at her through the rear view mirror.
"Shut up." Meg snapped to Dean as she moved the phone to the same side I was sat on.
"I'll stop speaking." I heard Cass said and smirked a little.
"No. No, Cass. You talk." Meg purred a little as she continued to talk. Now call me crazy, but I was sure there was something between Meg and Cass and I was certain she felt it too.
"I'm in a place called Perth." Cass explained to Meg sounding so happy about it all.
"Perth?" Meg asked confused.
"Perth? As in Australia?" Dean barked, looking back at Meg again.
"What dogs?" She asked confused before looking over to Dean. "He says he's surrounded by unhappy dogs."
"They're chasing a rabbit around." Cass continued to explain.
"Oh. Okay. He's at a dog track in Perth." Meg realised connecting the dots.
"I'm surrounded by large unhappy dogs." Cass echoed his words.
"Yeah, they're unhappy 'cause the rabbit's fake." She sighed shaking her head at him. "Listen, we're on highway 94, north of St. Cloud, Minnesota, just passing mile marker 79." Meg explained looking out of the window. The next thing I knew I was sat up front between the guys and Castiel was sat behind me.
"Aah!" Kevin cried out as I sighed and turned around to see Cass sat there with a grin on his face.
"Kevin, this is Castiel." Meg introduced the pair as Cass just smirked at Kevin.
"You're one of the angels?" Kevin asked worried about what Cass was going to do to him. Castiel's smirk grew as he touched a finger to Kevin's nose.
"Boop." He beamed before turning to Meg, frowning a little. "Meg, are you hurt?" He asked seriously. Meg glanced at me before turning to Cass.
"Shut up." She barked, looking a little rattled. I sighed and turned back round to face the front. Sam shifted up a little so that I had a little space to stretch out.
"Cass, what happened back there? Who were those guys?" Dean asked as we drove down the empty road.
"They're from the Garrison- my old Garrison. Looks like Hester's taken over. We were assigned to watch the earth. Often, it was boring. The wars were very boring and the sex– you know, the repetition. Anyway, I was, uh... I was their captain. Isn't that strange?" Cass asked looking at everyone for some kind of response.
"Cass, why are they pissed at us now?" Sam asked confused as he glanced behind to the guys.
"You know, those racing dogs were absolutely miserable. They can only think in ovals." Cass explained to Meg as she just nodded rolling her eyes.
"Cass, don't make me pull this car over! Why are angels after us?" Dean snapped getting Castiel's attention again. Poor Cass looked like a kicked puppy.
"Are you angry? Why are you angry?" Cass asked like a three year old in trouble.
"No, I-I'm... Please, can we just stay on target?" Dean begged as I noticed him grip the wheel tighter.
"There is no reason for anger. They're only following protocol. If the Word of God is revealed, a keeper of the Word will awaken, like this," Cass explained tapping Kevin's nose again. "Hot potato right here." I watched as Kevin slapped Castiel's hand away looking a mixture of scared and annoyed at the crazy angel.
"Please stop that." Kevin huffed, hugging the bag for protection and comfort.
"Anyway, Garrison code dictates you take the keeper to the desert to learn the Word away from men." Cass explained as he turned back to Dean.
"What kind of sense does that make? He has to tell us so that we can use it." Dean cried out shaking his head as he drove.
"That's God and his shiny red apples." Cass smirked with a small shrug.
"I can't live in the desert. I-I'm applying to Princeton!" Kevin cried out getting worked up again. I turned and offered him a small smile.
"Breathe Kevin, come on, keep breathing." I spoke softly as he nodded and started to take slow deep breaths. "That's good." I beamed at him.
"Okay, you know what? Screw the Garrison. We need the tablet to end Dick Roman's Soylent Us crap." Dean barked shaking his head as he glanced at me and Sam.
"If you want the Word, you'll have to duck Hester and her soldiers." Cass pointed out with another shrug.
"Yeah, you're in our corner, right, Cass?" Sam asked looking over his shoulder to the angel.
"No, I don't fight anymore. I watch the bees." Cass explained sitting back in the seat and looking uncomfortable about the whole issue of fighting.
We got to the cabin and Cass gave us a couple of warding symbols to keep the Garrison from finding where we took Kevin. Cass, Sam and Meg were busy painting them on the walls as me and Dean took Kevin into the basement.
"I'm sure you're pretty hungry, so once we get settled in upstairs, we'll get some dinner going." Dean explained leading the way. He walked over to the table and started to clear a space moving the knives and other things out of the way. I fallowed Kevin and noticed when he stopped at the foot of the stairs.
"This looks like a sex-torture dungeon." Kevin blurted out as his eyes went wide. "Is this a sex-torture dungeon?" Kevin asked panicked. I couldn't help the snigger that escaped my lips as Dean picked up a scythe. Both guys turned to me as I couldn't help the laughter as my shoulder shook silently.
"Oh come on... with your history... that's funny." I smirked pointing to Dean who just rolled his eyes at me.
"No, this is not a sex-torture... Get over here. Sit down and read, would you?" Dean sighed waving Kevin over. Kevin hesitated as he glanced over his shoulder to me.
"It's just a basement. Honestly." I admitted with an encouraging smile. Kevin nodded as he walked over to the space Dean set up. I pulled up a chair for Kevin as he unpacked a note pad, pen and the tablet. I glanced up as Dean watched Kevin sit down and get comfy. As he got settled Dean looked up at me. I grabbed another chair and pulled it up next to the one Dean had set up.
"If you want to... space, it's ok I can watch over the kid." Dean whispered softly to me as we both sat down.
"Yeah I know... but I kinda want to be here, with you." I whispered back, shooting him a small smile as I saw the surprise on his expression.
"Ok then. We'll do the babysitting." Dean smirked at me as he folded his arms over his chest.
"You know I can still hear you both, right?" Kevin asked, his head in the tablet as he scribbled away.
"Keep reading!" Both me and Dean said at the same time.
We watched Kevin work on the tablet for hours. Dean had slumped into the chair and looked like he was sleeping, I was resting my head in my right hand as I watched Kevin scrub his face.
"Take a break." I hummed softly as Kevin looked over to me.
"I, I thought this was important." Kevin replied softly, so not to wake Dean up.
"It is, but you need to take a break." I smiled as Kevin sat back and looked at me and Dean. There was a question bugging him, I could read it as clear as a bell on his expression. The way his eyebrow furrowed together, his lips kept parting as if he was trying to get the courage up to ask. "Shoot." I smirked as Kevin sighed for the third time of trying to ask. He sat up straight and bit his lip softly.
"How'd... how do you know them?" Kevin asked nodding a head to Dean.
"Dean and Sam?" I asked confused.
"Yeah." Kevin sighed nodding a little.
"Kid, that is a long story for another day," I chuckled a little shaking my head. "Short story is they saved my life, I saved theirs. We're kinda like family."
"Are you two..." Kevin waved a finger between the pair of us.
"Oh... I don't think that's a question that needs answering right now huh?" I replied, stealing a glance at the sleeping Dean.
"My mom and Channing will be worried about me, are you sure I can't just give them a call?" Kevin asked shooting me the saddest gaze I had seen since Sam Winchester. I sighed, pushing some loose hair out of my face as I lent forward.
"It wouldn't be safe. Not for them. Not for us. We just really need that info, and then I promise we'll make sure you get back safe." I answered honestly as I looked into those big sad eyes and felt like a guilty son of a bitch. Doyle used to give me the exact same expression when I wouldn't let him do something stupid.
"Do your family know what you do? I mean hunt the um supernatural?" Kevin asked as I felt the conversation hitting too close to the bone for me. I cleared my throat, leaning back in my chair as I thought about my family, and how badly I wished they were back.
"Ah now I think the break is up. How's about you get back to business?" I asked as I glanced at Dean. Kevin sighed, picking up his pen and going back to work. I watched as Kevin worked for a while longer before I felt myself drifting off to sleep.
"Kevin." Dean asked as I snapped my eyes open. Dean still had his eyes shut and Kevin was stood up, hyperventilating as he looked at everything around him.
"This is all too much. What's happened to my life? I'm just a kid from Michigan. I didn't want to be a Word-keeper!" Kevin cried out as Dean groaned sitting up.
"Breathe Kevin, come on you need to keep calm." I hummed softly, getting up and moving over to Kevin.
"Looks like we're brown-baggin' it." Dean sighed looking around and picking up a brown paper bag.
"I am not prepared to factor the supernatural into my world view." Kevin rambled through short breathes as Dean shoved the bag over his face.
"Okay, there we go." Dean huffed as he pat Kevin on the back. "That's it. That's it. Just breathe. Take it easy." He sighed as he walked away and lent on the edge of the table. I rubbed small circles on Kevin's back as he breathed into the bag, his breathing slowly coming back into a steady pattern.
"Oh, I don't know, man. What can I say? You've been chosen. And it sucks. Believe me." Dean sighed as he looked over to me and Kevin. We both knew what it was like to be chosen, how difficult your life can become. "There's no use asking why me? 'Cause the angels – they don't care. I think maybe they just don't have the equipment to care. Seems like when they try, it just... breaks them apart." Dean admitted sadly as he looked to the ground. I stopped rubbing circles on Kevin's back and really looked at Dean. For the first time since we got Cass back I could really see how badly his breakdown had effected Dean. How bad Dean hurt because his best friend was nothing short of a drooling mess. I felt a wave of guilt and sadness hit me. Shit! No, no no come on! Not now! I panicked as I realised my wolf powers were starting to kick in.
"I just want to be the first Asian-American President of the United States." Kevin spoke up, pulling me from my fears.
"Then do your homework." Dean sighed as he went and sat back down resting his legs up on something.
"I need some air." I mumbled as I made my way up and out of the basement.
It didn't take us long to realise that Meg had gone. I thought we should have seen it coming since she was only looking out for number one. With the angels on our arse I figured that she would have a better chance at hiding without us. We all knew that Castiel would find her if he wanted to, they shared that love connection. Cass though convinced us that she would return, at least for him. So we did what any good hunter would do and set up a trap. Meg walked into the cabin and was frozen in place by the devil's trap we drew on the floor. Sam flicked the lights on as me, Sam, Dean and Cass stood watching her. Sam and Dean looked ready to kill her out right, but Cass, I noticed that Cass had faith in her.
"Didn't expect to see you back." Sam grunted as he glared at Meg.
"Yeah, not without the King's army." Dean huffed as he held his hand out to Meg. "Knife." He barked as she passed him Ruby's blade.
"Typical. I save our bacon, and you're sitting here, waiting by a devil's trap." Meg explained, but none of us looked like we believed her. "Seriously, I just killed two of Crowley's men. I could have gone the other way on that." She snapped looking at all of us annoyed.
"It's true, incidentally. There's other demons' blood on that blade." Cass explained as he walked over to the side of Dean and the pair looked at the blade.
"Look, I'm simpler than you think. I've figured one thing out about this world – just one, pretty much. You find a cause, and you serve it. Give yourself over, and it orders your life. Lucifer and Yellow Eyes – their mission was it for me." Meg explained looking at all of us, begging us to understand her.
"So, what? We should trust you because you wanted to free Satan from Hell?" Dean scoffed shaking his head at her.
"I'm talking cause, douche bag, as in reason to get up in the morning. Obviously, these things shift over time. We learn, we grow. Now, for me currently, the cause is bringing down the King. And I know we'll need help to do it." Meg explained as she looked over to everyone.
"Crowley ain't the problem this year." Dean spat back as I felt my body tense. Crowley might not be the problem but he isn't exactly helping anything...
"When are you gonna get it? Crowley's always the problem. He's just waiting for the right moment to strike." Meg yelled back and looked over to me. She looked at me like she knew what I was thinking. I nodded, because damn it all, I agreed with her. She was right, Crowley is always the problem. "I know what I'm supposed to do. And it isn't screw with Sam and Dean or lose the only angel who'd go to bat for me." Meg added as she looked over to Castiel. I glanced as Cass had a shy small smile on his lips. Dean turned to me and Sam, weighing up if we believed her or not. I had to admit, and damn it I hated Meg, she was right. I believed her. I walked over to the devil's trap and rubbed some of the chalk out with my foot.
"This is good– harmony and communication." Castiel smirked as Meg walked over to us and Sam sat on the edge of the sofa. "Now our only problem is Hester." He added in his light hearted tone.
"What?" Meg asked shocked.
"Hester, wh, what do you mean Cass?" I asked turning to face the crazy angel.
"Well, here, we're hidden from the Garrison, but when you killed a demon, you put out a pretty clear beacon." Cass smirked as we all looked panicked at each other. Meg moved to stand by Castiel's side.
"We need better angel-proofing now." Meg said as the door was ripped open and Hester and a couple of angels appeared in the room. We all got to our feet, ready to fight the best we could.
"You took the Prophet from us?!" Hester yelled at Castiel.
"I'm – I'm sorry?" Cass murmured as he shrugged his shoulders.
"You have fallen in every way imaginable." Hester hissed at him, looking at Cass like most angels looked at me.
"Please, Castiel. We have to follow the code. Help us do our work." Inais the dude angel from before begged appearing at the side of me and Dean.
"He can't help you. He can't help anybody." Dean cried out, never keeping his eyes off Hester for too long.
"We don't need his help... or his permission." Hester hissed as she nodded to Inais. I heard a flutter of wings as Inais disappeared and my stomach dropped. I knew he was going for Kevin. "The Keeper goes to the desert tonight." She ordered as Inais and Kevin reappear near me. I glanced at Kevin and saw how terrified he looked.
"Whoa, whoa, whoa. Back off. We're actually trying to clean up one of your angel's messes! You know that." Dean yelled as he tried to reason with Hester.
"He's right. An angel brought the Leviathan back into this world, and – and they begged him. They begged him not to do it." Cass explained looking so guilt as he looked to the floor. I sensed a wave of guilt actually roll from Cass.
"Look, just give us some time, okay? We will take care of your Prophet." Dean offered, trying to reason with Hester and keep hold of Kevin.
"Why should we give you anything... After everything you have taken from us? The very touch of you corrupts. When Castiel first laid a hand on you in Hell, he was lost! For that, you're going to pay." Hester growled, with all the venom in her voice I knew she was about to hurt Dean. Something snapped in me, as Hester stalked towards Dean I stood in front of him, blinking and feeling my eyes change colour. I knew I was no where near strong enough to fight, and keeping my wolf side out was taxing, but I was willing to bluff with the angel.
"You think that will stop me abomination?" Hester growled stopping just in front of me. I held my chin high as I just glared at her.
"Try me." I growled, in a deep voice. I was putting up the best, big scary ass front I had, and boy was it taking everything I had to keep it up. If we had tangled I knew I wouldn't have lasted two seconds with her.
"Please. They're the ones we were put here to protect." Castiel begged, taking Hester's arm and turning the pair around so that her back was to me.
"No, Castiel." Hester barked as she backhanded Castiel with so much force he fell to the floor. Me, Sam and Dean tried to rush forward to help but where stopped by the other angels holding up two fingers each to stop us. "No more madness!" She cried as she laid another blow on Cass. "No more promises!" She screamed after another pounding. "No more new Gods!" She cried out punching him a couple more times before holding up an angel knife.
"Hester! No!" Inais called out, grabbing Hester's arm. "Please! There's so few of us left." He begged her. Hester turned to Inais and punched him in the face with the hand holding the knife. Inais stumbled backwards and fell to the floor.
"You wanted free will. Now I'm making the choices." Hester screamed as she raised the knife ready to stab Castiel. Me, Sam and Dean pushed against the angels who held us back as a white light burst from Hester's chest filling the room before she fell to the floor dead. As the light faded I saw Meg stood there with her angel knife.
"What? Someone had to." She shrugged innocently to Castiel.
Kevin finished translating the tablet and Castiel explained to Inais how important it would to let Kevin stay with his family. I was exhausted after bluffing my way through the angel encounter with Hester. I clearly had a long way to go before I was back to my wolfy self. I sat at the table next to Kevin as he jotted down the last of the tablet.
"These are strange times." Inais sighed as he looked over to all of us.
"I think they've always been." Cass sighed looking at his old friend. Inais put his hand on Castiel's shoulder.
"I wish you'd come with us." Inais sighed looking over to Cass. In return Cass offered Inais a warm smile.
"Oh, I'm not part of the Garrison anymore, Inias. I'm sorry." Cass explained as Dean walked over to us. Kevin passed Sam the note book with the full translation in it.
"Thanks, Kevin. Not a lot of people could have handled this." Sam explained honestly as Kevin just nodded.
"You're tougher than you look, you might just make president one day." I smirked nudging him with my right shoulder as Kevin smiled at me.
"You doing all right there, chosen one?" Dean asked standing in front of us.
"Yeah." Kevin answered smiling up to Dean.
"Are you ready, Kevin Tran?" Inais asked as a couple of angels appeared. We all got to our feet as the new two angels put their hands on a shoulder each of Kevin's. I watched as Kevin hugged the tablet to his chest. "Bring the Keeper to his home. We can watch over him there." Inais ordered as everyone disappeared. Castiel walked over to us, a pleasant smile on his face.
"I couldn't find Meg anywhere." Dean explained as he looked over to Cass.
"Yes, well, she enjoys laying low." Cass smirked as he nodded thinking about Meg.
"What about you short stuff? You back to wolfing out?" Dean asked glancing over at me.
"Ok, short stuff, really?" I huffed as he threw me a cheeky grin. I shook my head looking down to my arm in the sling. "I may have bluffed a lot when I changed my eyes. I'm no where near wolf ready just yet... thank god Hester didn't know that." I chuckled as I looked up to see Sam and Dean surprised.
"You bluffed?" Sam asked shaking his head.
"With a freaking angel?" Dean added as I nodded sheepishly. I watched the proud smirk cross Dean's lips. "Atta girl." He laughed as Sam went back to reading the notebook.
"Hey, look. Here. Leviathan cannot be slain but by a bone of a righteous mortal washed in the three bloods of the fallen. Uh... It says we need to start with the blood of a fallen angel." Sam explained as he read from the notebook. At the mention of a fallen angel we all paused and looked over to Castiel.
"Well, you know me." Cass smirked holding a small bottle out in his arm. "I'm always happy to bleed for the Winchesters." He added as I blinked and the bottle was full of his blood. Cass simply passed it to Dean.
"What are you gonna do, Cass?" Dean asked taking the blood and looking over to his friend.
"I don't know." Castiel answered honestly before smiling at us. "Isn't that amazing?" He asked smirking as he disappeared right in front of our eyes. Sam went back to reading as I just let out a small sigh.
"Well, let's get to work." Dean huffed, slapping Sam on the arm as he walked away.
