Part 89

"ERIC!" Brett shouted during Warbler practice. He entered the room and the others had to fight their laughter. Brett's face was strawberry red and his hair green. All over his face there were also little white dots. Eric looked smug. Brett looked furious and Wes looked tired. The Everetts had been fighting for weeks now and it didn't seem as if they were going to make up any time soon. Brett stormed towards Eric but Wes decided to put an end to it before it started.

"Brett go wash off", he said with his most Austin like authority. "Eric report to Carmichael."

"Aw come one!" Eric objected but Wes gave him a dark look, his most Brad like glare. Eric hurriedly got up and ran for the door. Brett was hot on his heel. When they were out Wes sighed tiredly.

"We have got to put an end to this…" he grumbled.

"How", Howard asked. "It's not like we can lock them in a closet until they make up because they'll find stuff in there to use on each other."

"And leaving them alone at all is dangerous to everyone", Oliver said and sat down with a heavy sigh. Wes ran a hand over his face. Weeks… WEEKS! He couldn't take much more. They still had no idea of what was going on! Hell he'd even called every single older Warbler to ask for advice, well everyone but one. Bastian wasn't out of hospital yet so getting in touch with him was hard. Wes sighed and leaned on the council table. This was such a mess. A mess he couldn't solve… and that made him both sad and very annoyed. He was often able to solve fights. At least fights between friends. But what did he know of family fights? Wait… family? That's it!

"I got it!" he exclaimed and flew up so fast he nearly knocked Rob off of his chair.

"Whatever you got I hope it ain't catching", the taller boy grumbled. Wes just waved his comment away.

"I know how to solve this", he said and got around the council table. "Tell me, who can't we lie to?"

The Warblers looked at each other. Had Wes gone crazy? Well he sure looked a lot better than he had these past couple of weeks. His eyes were gleaming and he had a wide grin on his lip. But for some, like David, the look on Wes' face had them thinking of a Jack Nicholson in the Shining.

"Um… Principal Carmichael?" Blaine tried.

"Wrong answer", Wes said and grinned even wider.

"You?" Thad said with a small voice and Wes laughed. It wasn't a mean laugh just an amused one and Thad blushed a little. Of course they could lie to Wes sometimes. I mean… how else could the boys get away with some of the things they did? Thad and Benjamin having sex was one thing. Thad didn't want Wes to know because Wes would kill Benjamin for touching him like that before he either of them came of age. None of them knew Wes had done the same so he wouldn't do anything. Well make sure Benjamin treated his baby right was the only thing he'd do. Oh and threaten him with bodily harm if he ever hurt his little birdie.

"No but seriously", Wes continued. "Who in here can't any of you lie to?"

"Ma Trixie?" Isaac asked.

"Good guess and partly right but still there is someone else."

No answer. Wes rolled his eyes.

"Your parents!" he said and the Warblers all stared at him. "I'm sure you all think you can but parents, real parents, they always know. They always know when something is up. When you're hiding something or when something is wrong."

"Yeah I can't even lie about forgetting chores to my mom", Rob said.

"And the Everetts has it 'worse'" Oliver said and got up slowly. "When you grow up with a lawyer around it's even harder to lie."

"So if we get their parents here they could help us solve this mystery?" Peter asked hopefully.

"That's my plan", Wes said. "now the only problem is getting in touch with them."

"Carmichael should be able to help with that", Howard spoke up. "But we need to keep the Everetts distracted so that they don't figure out what we're doing."

"Right", Wes said. "I'll go to Carmichael and you distract them."

He headed for the door but then stopped when Juan called after him:

"How exactly do you distract two prank kings?!"

Wes's shoulders dropped and he sighed. Then he turned to the Warblers.

"Play a prank on them of course!" he said and then left the room. The Warblers were left staring at each other. So they were going to play a prank on two of Dalton's biggest pranksters? How were they going to be able to pull that off?! And how would that keep the twins occupied?! They'd only think it was the other pranking them and they'd go on a rampage. It would be the yellow pees in the corridor all over again!

Oh yes that's what Brett did to Eric and the basketball team. While they were changing for practice he, somehow, managed to fill the corridor leading to the gym with yellow pees and then started the fire alarm. He was just lucky no one got badly hurt. But it was payback for Eric pranking him and the poetry club. Eric had thrown in a homemade smoke bomb that turned the boys' skin green… as well as ruined the books for them.

Then there was the incident with Eric's basketball. Somehow Brett managed to fill it with oil and feathers and then filled it with so much air it nearly exploded. Well it did when Eric bounced it.

Then there was the incident with Brett getting his hands super glued to two different books. One being the book he loathed most in the world and the other the book he was ashamed of liking. The loathed book was Pride and Prejudice and the "shameful secret" was Daddy Longlegs.

Then there was the incident with the rubber lacrosse sticks and too small shoes.

And the incident with the paper shredder.

And the incident with the glued-to-hand-basketball.

And the books all over the roof in a rainstorm.

And the "shrunken" gym clothes.

And exchanged essay.

And the cheerleading outfit incident.

The missing pages.

The skirts instead of shorts.

"Wait a minute!" Alexander exclaimed and looked between the boys that had been listing the different pranks. "Does anyone else than me see a pattern here?"

Wes was standing in the hallway, his shoulders shaking with rage. He was drenched from top to bottom in chocolate pudding. He hated chocolate pudding. It was something with the texture of it. He crossed his arms and tried to keep his temper in check. That and adding in the fact that all freshmen were staring at him in awe. He could not lose his temper here in front of everyone. Suddenly he heard laughter. He really slowly turned around to face the ones who were laughing. He came face to face with the Everetts. They were leaning on each other to keep upright and it was clear to Wes that they were the culprits. He gave them his most Austin like glare. The one the Latino had always reserved for Jesse St. James. It was like staring into two hot pieces of coal. He put so much rage behind it that the usual pieces of flaming hot coal turned into blazing infernos. He growled, almost wolf like, and the twins stared at him. Then they paled a little. They'd never seen Wes this angry. Wes was mostly angry because he thought they had just been pretending to fight to get him with a prank. But then when the twins realized how angry he was they jumped apart and started blaming each other, angrily. Wes just stared at them.

"What is wrong with you?!" he yelled and the two turned to look at him. "Why… I just.. you… You two are the biggest idiots I've ever encountered! Make the fuck up or I will kick your asses to the Singapore. I swear to God I'll do it!" With that he turned around and stormed off. The Warblers had heard the laughter and then Wes' yells and were watching from a distance.

"Wow can't Eric just give up already?" Isaac asked and rubbed his forehead.

"Excuse me?" Howard asked. "But why should Eric give up?"

"I meant he should apologize already", Isaac clarified.

"Why should it be him?" Rob asked, narrowing his eyes and crossing his arms over his chest.

"Hello he's the one that started this whole mess by blowing up the Tiger!"

"First of all the Tiger is still standing", Oliver Webber said. "And second of all… how do you know that was the first thing that happened? Brett could easily have done something before that. They have prank wars on each other all the time!"

"Oh please Brett has far more taste than that", Peter "Pan" said. "He's the bookworm. Eric is the one that always starts everything, like jocks in general."

"Hey!" all the members that were in sports teams objected. Peter just crossed his arms.

"It's the truth", he grumbled.

"No it's not!" Howard growled. "You bookworms always act as if you are better than everyone else! You think you're all so smart and act as if everyone else are stupid!"

The "jocks" and the "bookworms" started fighting each other and in the middle was Collin. He was a little bit of both. He stared between his friends. He couldn't believe his eyes. The Warblers never used to argue like this. Never. Sure they fought sometimes. Sure they had their disagreements but never outright wars.

"Enough I'm tired of listening to this crap!" Rob Barton yelled and stormed out. The other "jocks" followed him and the "bookworms" left after a bit as well. Probably to find Brett to give him their support in this and the jocks to support Eric.

Collin walked over to the window and leaned his forehead against the cold surface. He watched his friends outside on the grounds walking away from each other. He sighed heavily. He knew why Isaac was so testy lately. He and his boyfriend Vlad was arguing, badly. Vlad wanted to go to college in the US while Isaac was aiming for overseas. None of them wanted to give in so it was a huge fight. Collin sighed.

A few of the guys had been going through breakups lately for different reasons. Rob had broken up with his girlfriend after finding out she was cheating on him. Alexander and Cristina had broken up because they just kept arguing and didn't love each other anymore. But they broke up because both wanted it. Then there was the Everetts moving out of the Tiger. The place wasn't the same since. And there was a student leaving the Vermillion as well. He'd had enough of the school he said, he'd left the room right next to Collin's. The junior suspected it had something to do with his fiancé, yes you heard correctly, breaking up with him on Dalton grounds.

Collin heard a sound and turned around. He saw Thad sitting on the couch, looking scared. Collin cursed inside his head. The poor freshman was still nervous around people and this huge fight probably didn't help. Thad as well as himself were stuck in the middle, probably along with Wes. Collin walked over to Thad and sat beside him. He wrapped an arm around him and the freshman leaned his head on Collin's shoulder. Collin rubbed his arm and looked out the window with a heavy sigh. Absentmindedly he started singing.

The house next door just came up for sale – He thought of the former student.
She's going home to mama... She says he can go to hell
The couple down the block is splitting up I hear
– Isaac and Vlad, it sounded like a breakup was near.
And they're the third ones on our street this year

It's just another day in Anytown U.S.A.
Somebody's hurt, Somebody's blue
And somebody moves away
And what little they do to make it work
Don't seem to do much good
When love moves out... there goes the neighborhood –
Here he thought of the Everetts.

First they take off their wedding bands
They call it quits and call the moving vans
He takes his and she takes her's
And what's left over is left on the curb
– He still thought of the Everetts.

It's just another day in Anytown U.S.A.
Somebody's hurt, Somebody's blue
And somebody moves away
And what little they do to make it work
Don't seem to do much good
When love moves out... there goes the neighborhood

Collin and Thad stayed on the couch, not noticing Wes leaving the room at an angry pace.

Benjamin, Samuel, Gabriel, Kevin and Cory all stared at as Wes walked into Cory's room and collapsed on the bed face first and just stayed there. The other boys looked at each other, then Wes, then themselves again and lastly Wes again.

"Uh Wes", Samuel asked and moved closer. "Aren't you supposed to be in Warbler practice right now?"

Wes grumbled something into the pillow. But none of his friends heard what he said. Samuel moved to his head and bent down to listen to Wes' grumbles.

"I didn't quite catch that", he said calmly. Wes started grumbling again and Samuel nodded. "Oh, uh huh, oh, oh I see, yes. Okay I understand." He sat back. He turned around and noticed his other friends staring at him, some with big eyes and some looking skeptical. "What?"

"You understand what he's saying?" Gabriel asked.

"Of course, I've been fluent in mumbles for thirteen years", Samuel said happily. "Now Wes said that he is 'tired of stupid Warblers that can't stop arguing for one second because the twins argue and that chaos has suddenly taken over this school and he is too young to deal with this on his own so he's gonna quit for the day and take care of it sometime in the future'."

Now even Wes sat up and stared at Samuel, that was the exact words he'd just spoken into the pillow. Benjamin bit his lip.

"Does stupid Warblers include my boyfriend?" he asked, feeling a little anger build up inside.

"No", Wes grumbled. "He, Collin and I are the only sane ones at the moment. Cory is Alex still not back from vacation?"

"Nope", Cory said. "Why?"

"Because I need somewhere to sleep tonight. I cannot stand David and Eric tonight."

"Mí casa es su casa", Cory said with a grin and patted Wes' knee. "Now, let's figure something out to do to cheer ol' Wessy up."

Wes had a small smile playing on his lips while everyone came with ideas on how to cheer him up. Not his entire "neighborhood" had gone at least.
