Chapter 5: Temptation

Corn rinsed the heavy crystal glass under the sink, listening to the faint footsteps of Gum leaving. He waited for the final door of the apartment to close before walking, slowly, back into the living room. He vaguely wondered what had been Yoyo's true intention of the visit and how he had managed to convince Gum to join him…but that was all pointless now. They had scared the kid away with their brawl and he doubted that either would be back anytime soon.

He absent minded-ly picked up the second hand copy of his book from the table where Yoyo had left it and opened the first page. Pencilled very lightly in the bottom right hand corner were the initials DG. He thought briefly of Combo for no apparent reason. Perhaps his name had begun with those initials after all, but he hadn't thought of Cube and Combo in years. He wondered if they were still together.

He put the book back down, expressionless, and walked over to the liquor cabinet, savouring the way the cupboard creaked a little as the mahogany swung on the little brass hinges. He looked at the bottles, not touching, reading the labels. The branded stuff was at the front, the sight of the Jack Daniels stung him a little, a distant memory swimming in front of his eyes; Gum sat upon the old battered car in the Garage pressing the square shaped bottle to her lips, a half-smile playing on her face as she screwed up her cheeks and eyes at the harsh taste, the little giggle she let out as she handed the bottle to him.

He sighed and moved on from the whisky to the vodkas and collection of rum; dark and light. His eyes fell on a long slender bottle at the back, the liquid a pale green. He didn't have any sugar cubes but that didn't matter. He picked it out carefully from the deeply set shelf, taking care not to knock over any of the other bottles, and walked over to the seat Gum had been sat at before, picking up the book once again and simultaneously opening the front cover of the book that had caused him so much trouble.
