Disclaimer: I do not own Winx Club.
AN: Just got this idea in my head and it wouldn't leave. I know this is unrealistic, but I figured: why not? It's fanfiction after all.
It was late at night when the topic was brought up. Daphne had just finished explaining why her parents had named her Daphne. "…which is why my parents chose the name Daphne. That led to why Bloom was named Bloom, because Bloom means beautiful flower."
The Winx, plus Daphne, were sprawled around the room on sofas and the like. The former Specialists and Paladins were either sitting next to their girlfriends or sitting on the floor. It had been an unusually coincidental day - the Specialists and Paladins had visited on the girls' off-day, and they had spent the day talking about…everything, really.
"That's lovely." Flora smiled. Flora, as she herself had explained, meant plants of a particular dimension or habitat. It was quite fitting for the Fairy of Plants and it was nice to share this name meaning with her best friend.
Daphne smiled as well. "It is." She and her sister grinned at one another.
"It fits you too." Sky looked at Bloom lovingly.
"Thanks, Sky." Bloom smiled back, equally in love.
"I've got a question." Riven announced, cutting into the romantic atmosphere between the two. It was the first contribution he had made in a while that didn't involve any critical, skeptical or just plain rude comments. He had been quiet after Helia had pointed out that rive meant split or tear apart violently, and that Riven was rive's past principle but he seemed to have gotten over that now.
"Joy." Brandon muttered.
Riven scowled at him, but he still asked anyway. He turned to Helia, who was sitting in front of where Flora was sitting on the sofa. "Isn't Helia a girl's name?"
"Riven!" There were several admonishes from various people in the group.
Riven didn't seem bothered and crossed his arms. "It's a real question. Your parents can't be that cruel to name you Helia, well, they could be, but-"
Helia, to his credit, didn't bat a lash, instead answering. "It's Helios."
That took a couple of seconds to process, but Riven did it faster than the rest.
"Your name's Helios?"
A nod.
"Then how did Helia come about?"
Helia leaned back. "My godmother was dyslexic. When she first heard about me, it was through email. As you can imagine, that didn't go as well as hoped."
"Why didn't your parents just, I don't know, tell her?" Riven asked, eyebrow raised. "She couldn't have thought your name was Helia if everyone was calling you Helios, could she?"
The blue-haired specialist shrugged. "Lia is a lot easier to pronounce than Lios, at least to my three-year-old self. My godmother got attached to it, and kept on calling me that. Since she spent most of her time with me, the name sort of…stuck."
"Your parents didn't care that no one is calling you what they named you?" Daphne asked. Helia turned to her, surprised. Daphne was slightly surprised herself - it was the first time they ever had direct communication with one another.
Helia shook his head. "Not exactly. The meaning of Helia and Helios is relatively similar. Besides, both are close in terms of pronunciation."
"What does Helia mean?" Sky interrupted.
Helia turned to him, but it was Thoren who answered. "Helia means of the sun. Helios, on the other hand, means sun."
"Where's your godmother now?"
There was a long pause. "She's dead."
Daphne clapped a hand over her mouth. "Helia…I'm so sorry…"
"It's fine." Helia waved it off, though it seemed anything but. "It was a long time ago. I've accepted her passing."
"I see." Daphne nodded slowly.
There was a few moments of silence, before Layla put it upon herself to interrupt. "What does Layla mean then?"
And they were off again.
