The bright, cheery morning sky seemed to mock the solemn situation. I watched as Six was led onto a large platform built in the middle of Times Square. I was on top of one of the large signs at One Times Square. Despite what White Knight said it was surprisingly easy to slip in mainly because most of the EVOs were preoccupied with the spectacle in front of them. That and we were wearing stealth suits.
I hoped Holiday and Bobo got to their destination safely. But since I didn't see any commotion I assumed they were in place.
I could see that Van Kleiss stood emotionlessly to the side on the platform. Six's arms and legs were chained to four different EVOs. When he was secured, Van Kleiss stepped to the front to address the crowd.
"Today marks the turning point of our struggle with the normals. Today we execute someone who has caused us needless suffering and is an enemy to all EVOs. Let all normals beware that this is the fate that befalls all who oppose us." He nodded his head and the EVOs began pulling him apart.
Six gritted his teeth and pain was evident on his face but he refused to utter a sound.
Enough! I formed my slam cannon and blasted the chain to his left hand. The chain on his right hand snapped as a laser blast hit it. The chains on his legs were also blasted. The EVOs who were pulling on the chains fell back when the chains snapped.
When Six was free he immediately attacked the EVOs that came after him. I was always impressed how Six can recover so quickly and kick butt. But I'll never tell him that.
However, my agro nanny was out-numbered. Time for me to save him.
I jumped off the sign and formed my boogie pack. Six was surrounded by EVOs. I swooped in and grabbed him. On my way out, I also picked up his swords that were lying on the platform.
"Rex?" He sounded… surprised? Really. Six never sounded like anything but a robot. So I wasn't going to let this go.
"Long time no see, ninja nanny." I said.
"Yeah, it's you." His flat tone was back.
Suddenly I was hit. One of my turbines broke off and we crashed into the streets. My stealth suit being damaged in the fall turned off. At least we cleared the crowd of EVOs.
"You didn't think that I would be ready for you, Rex?" Van Kleiss's voice grated against my ears.
I rolled and bounced back onto my feet. Forming my BFS I glared at the EVO dictator. "Can't leave you alone for a minute, can I Van Kleiss?"
"Now Rex, before you so hastily left my accommodations I was going to ask you to rule with me."
"What? No way."
"Before you go rejecting the offer, look around you. I've won. The world is now where it should be, soon all famines, wars, and diseases will cease. You can be apart of the new age."
"Sorry, I'm not into new age stuff. I prefer…" I swung my BFS at him. " Heavy metal!"
Van Kleiss moved to the side and vines burst from the ground. I sliced through them before they could get to me. I hoped Six was alright. I couldn't check on him right now. I was busy with Mr. Ego here.
"Rex watch out!" I saw a flash of green as hands grabbed me and pushed me out of the way. I hit the ground but looked up just in time to see Six dodge crystal shards from Skalamander. I formed my smack hands and blocked the remaining shots. I knocked Skalamander back and he landed on Van Kleiss.
I looked at Six. To my surprise he looked winded. He was on one knee and breathing heavy. It was then I noticed a red spot growing on his shirt. He had been hurt! Panicking I ran to him.
"Oh my gosh! You're hurt. We gotta get you outta here." I realized I was babbling but I couldn't help it.
"Rex, "Six said simply. "You need to calm down."
"Right, right. I'm calm, very calm! Oh my gosh you're hurt." Did I mention I couldn't stop babbling?
Six grabbed my shoulder and I helped him up. Quickly I became aware that we were being surrounded.
"Don't let them get away!" Van Kleiss ordered.
I had Six's arm around my neck and was supporting him with my other arm. I tried to build my boogie pack but I guess because of my emotional state I couldn't.
"Rex, "Six sounded far away, "Leave me. Get yourself out."
"No way!" I said firmly. "We're leaving together."
"How nice." Van Kleiss growled. "Then you get to die together.
As the EVOs closed in, it looked bleak until a horn blared and a Mack truck came barreling toward us. The EVOs either scattered or was knocked away. It slowed as it drove past us. Bobo popped out of the driver's side.
"Give me your hand!" He yelled. What hand? If he hadn't notice I was carrying Six.
So instead I ran to keep up and lifted Six as close to Bobo as I could. Bobo grabbed Six who seemed to be unconscious now. I grabbed the door of the truck and pulled myself in. As I shut the door the truck picked up speed.
I could hear Van Kleiss shouting words I couldn't repeat.
"Sorry, we're late but it seems that Van Kleiss was expecting us." Holiday stated grimly. "I had to make some last minute changes."
"Like what?" I asked.
Explosions from the city answered me.
"Insurance that we won't be followed." Holiday said. "How's Six?"
"He's bleeding pretty badly." Bobo answered pressing a rag to his wound.
"We need to get him back to base asap!" Holiday hit the gas.
I flew back in my seat.
"Rex, how many times do I have to tell you to put your seat belt on!" Holiday snapped at me. I resisted the urge to say "Sorry, mom".
Back at base, Doc patched up Six. He didn't say much… not that he ever did. But he seemed to be staring at Holiday. White Knight walked in as Doc was finishing up.
"Report." Knight demanded.
"Well, we rescued Six, kicked EVO butt, and here we are." I answered glibly.
White Knight ignored me. "Six, what happened?"
"There's something big going on. The EVOs talked freely around me since they thought I was going to be executed. Van Kleiss is looking for something… something that will increase his power and make him unstoppable."
I looked at White Knight. He looked paler than usual. "He knows." Knight muttered to himself. Then to us he said, "Meeting in an hour."
"Oh come on! We just got back!" I complained. Really who did Knight think we were … machines? Well, okay I can make machines but that doesn't make me one. As if to prove my point, my stomach growled.
"One hour!" Knight repeated as he walked through the sliding doors.
I guess that means I have an hour to scare up some grub.
"Quick, Bobo, to the kitchen!" I ran out of the room. I turned briefly to see if Bobo was following me and from the corner of my eye I thought I saw Holiday and Six hug. But that can't be, I told myself. Just my hunger making me see things.
