Chapter 5

When I came to, I coughed up the water from my lungs. "Ugh, I think I swallowed half the Amazon River." I muttered getting up.

"What are you doing here? We don't like visitors!" A voice came from the shadows.

I looked up and saw a gun aimed at me.

I formed my smack hands. "Yeah, I gathered that from the warm welcome that you want to be alone but we need to find a Gabriel Rylander. It's a matter of life and death."

The gun went down. "R…r…rex? Is… is that you?" The voice grew soft.

"You know my name?" I asked warily.

"Of course I do. I gave it to you."

I was speechless for a minute. "Dad?" I asked tentatively.

Rylander smiled sadly, "You lost your memories haven't you. Not surprising considering what happened but no I'm sorry. I'm not who you want me to be."

"Oh." I wasn't sure if I felt relieved or disappointed. "Do you know what happened to him then?"

Rylander shook his head.

"What happened to me?" I asked now curious.

"Well, I saw intruders along my river so I activated my defense systems that simulate an squid attack not that there are any in the Amazon but it usually deters people from going further. Unfortunately, it accidently dragged you too far down so I had to…."

"No, not what happen to me just now. I mean what happen to make me like this?" I interrupted him.

"Oh, well you were in an accident, the nanites were your only hope. It was a tremendous gamble. But it worked! The... unexpected side affect came later. It was a surprise to us all. You should have seen the look on your brother's face."

"Brother?" I asked shocked.

"Your powers saved you and him from the explosion." As he was talking he grabbed a syringe, took my arm and shot something into me.

"Oww, what did you just inject me with?" I asked.

"Sorry Rex. I can't keep that nanite safe forever. Now they are together and you can keep them away from those who would use it for evil."

"You mean like me?" Van Kleiss suddenly appeared.

"How did you get here?" I asked angrily forming my smack hands.

"You are so predictable. I leaked the information so I could follow you. I wasn't able

to find where Rylander hid himself but now you've led me straight to him." Van Kleiss smirked.

"Finders keepers!" I yelled swinging my smack hands at him. He blocked me with his gauntlet.

"Tut tut Rex. Always so presumptive. Rylander had what I needed but now since you do, I no longer need him." With that vines pierced Rylander's chest.

"No!" I yelled.

Rylander's eyes grew wide before they slowly closed.

I don't know what happened next. My BFS just formed and it was like I was no longer in my body. I was watching myself attacking Van Kleiss. I cut off his gauntlet but a vine grew out instead. Didn't matter. I cut through that. I didn't stop. Whatever he was throwing at me I countered.

"I needed him! I needed him to tell me about me!" I heard myself say.

"You fool. I have the answers you want. Join me and you shall know all."

"Never!" I screamed as I cut off another vine. He seemed to be regenerating as fast as I was cutting him.

I rescinded my BFS and built my punk busters. I kicked him in the face and tried to stomp him flat. He rolled away but I then formed smack hands and knocked him against the wall.

I had him pinned to the wall. With my other hand I was about to wipe that smug smile off his face.

He chuckled. "So headstrong just like your mother."

At the mention of my mother, I wavered which gave him the opening he needed. With his foot he kicked me in my stomach. I fell back. That's when I noticed he was leaking soil.

I had damaged his suit! I formed my BFS again.

"I bet I know what's keeping you so fresh." I said without any humor. I sliced his suit and more soil leaked out. He quickly covered the opening to keep the soil in.

"Breach!" He yelled. A red portal opened and he jumped through my smack hands just missing him.

"Aauuughhh!" I yelled with frustration. I hit the ground. Then I remembered Rylander.

I crawled over to him and cradled his head.

To my surprise he opened his eyes.

"Your parents would have been so proud of you. Keep it safe." His voice was so low I could barely hear him.

"Where's my brother?" I asked tearfully.

"Keep it safe. Save…save the world." He coughed violently then went still.

I felt my eyes burn with tears. I didn't realize the fight had weakened the structure of the building. Things were falling around me but all I could do was hold onto Rylander. I was so close to learning about me. And this man was important in my life at one point. His death was a waste. I felt someone grab me and yank me up.

I thought I heard Six yell at me to run but I couldn't move. I was being dragged away as the building collapsed around me.

As we sat in the plane, I was silent. Six and Holiday did not press me for any information. I don't think I could tell them anything right now anyway. My mind was in a jumble. I had a brother. My powers saved us. He was out there somewhere. How was I going to find him?
