Renesmee

Chapter 10: Highest Tides

I was pretty sure I was dead. I couldn't feel anything in my body. No pain from where I had been impaled by the branch, no feeling period throughout my entire body. In fact, I was lying down, indoors somewhere, since I couldn't feel the breeze of somewhere outdoors. The only two things I couldn't exactly distinguish. A cold sensation enveloped her hand, and had her fingers intertwined and a slow, steady beep, beep, beep sound.

I wanted to open my eyes, but my entire body was still numb, but my heart, I could now feel still pumping, was trying to mend that. I could feel that slowly but surely, blood was making its circulation back around my body. After a couple of minutes I felt the blood suddenly warm and strengthen my eyelids. After prying my eyelids open, I tried to take in my surroundings but it was too blurry and I was too exhausted to try. From what I was able to blurrily see, it was a room though.

My eyes weakly shot to the person holding my hand. I couldn't make much of their face, but they were more pale than Nahuel, though. My breathing and heart rate hiked, the beeping meters responding with more erratic and faster beeping, with fear. Their head snapped into my direction. I couldn't see their face well, but they were cold and pale as a full vampire. It couldn't be Joham…Please don't let it be Joham.

I was too weak to try to force myself into more energy to jump, so I attempted to twitch my hand away from them. They reacted and released my hand.

"Renesmee?" A familiar voice said softly.

I blinked my eyes rapidly to try to clear the picture in front of me. The voice belonged to Edward, but I couldn't see his face to match it. My mind was screaming with questions. The entire place smelt like the Cullen's, so with Edward being present, so it was obvious where I was. My other questions were different. Why was I? Who all knew I was here? Did she know?

"E..Edward?" she croaked. I tried to swallow, but my voice was drier and rougher than sandpaper.

"You're safe. Don't worry," His hand reached hesitantly to my hair and smoothed it. I wanted to recoil from is hand, but I was too exhausted to move my hand, let alone my body. My eyes threaten to slam shut again but I got to look back up at Edward.

"N…Nahuel?" I waked, weakly.

"Do you want me to call him?" He was looking into my face, and I was trying desperately again to get my vision to clear but it was like looking into a foggy mirror.

He hadn't left? I was going to have to tell him what happened so we could leave.

"Please…" I said, finally after licking my lips uselessly. My tongue drily ran across my lips, giving them no moisture in their path and I sighed.

"Here, try this," Edward said, after noticing my attempts to wet my lips.

I was started to question what he was doing when a straw was brought to my lips. I sniffed the contents, paranoia catching up to me. It smelt of blood. I enclosed my lips around the straw and drew the blood into my mouth. It was so buttery smooth, warm and tasted heavenly. The second it entered my blood stream, my eyesight improved and I could finally see Edward peering down at me, his face etched with concern.

"Does…Does she know that I'm here?" I asked, after I decided which question I wanted to ask first.

Edward's mouth turned inward to a frown. "No, she doesn't." He replied. I could tell he didn't agree with why I didn't want to see Bella, but I could see in his eyes he was going to respect my wishes.

I wanted to give him a crooked smile in return, but I was so tired. I thought the blood would make me more energetic, but it made me more comfortable and warmer, and sleepier. My back relaxed against the hospital bed against my wishes to get up.

"Do you still want me to contact your friend?" was the last thing I heard before my eyelids slammed shut again. The comfort of the room and blankets, were yanking me into unconsciousness again.

Before the feeling in my body went back to numbness, I thought I could feel something odd. A cold kiss being placed on my forehead.

I wasn't sure how much time had passed since I fell asleep. I thought it was only a few second, but I wasn't sure. My unconsciousness was starting to subside and I could feel the energy creep back into my body. But I could also suddenly feel the pain in my back from my energy as my spine attempted to heal itself.

I wanted to open my eyes, but I still a little weak, and I could hear voices in the room now. A secondary voice I recognized instantly as Nahuel. A cold hand was once again enveloping mine, but a warmer one covered my other hand.

"Vampire venom is lethal to us. It could kill us, because our hearts are built to deal with our bodies. But, with vampire venom in the mix, it over powers our hearts and can actually cause our hearts to explode, its simply too much for us to handle." Nahuel said, finishing an explanation I hadn't heard the beginning of.

"Can you explain your gift to me as well?" Edward asked.

"My gift is a little complicated, but it's a form of mind control," I could hear Nahuel explain. "I can control what mind readers hear, I can control what others want to control of me."

"I thought it was a shield? I cannot read your mind," I finally heard Edward respond.

"Not quite. Over the years, I have turned me ability to shield myself. I have learned to control others mental powers over my own," he explained again, letting nothing make him impatient.

"So, you've tuned your ability, obviously. But, is it your main ability? Are you able to control other things?" Edward spoke again, after a few seconds.

"Yes." Nahuel responded evenly. "My main ability is to control others mind. I can make them involuntarily do things, even if they do not want to. But my ability of this is weak compared to my sibling, Serena."

"The women who attacked Renesmee?" The cold hand stiffened around mine.

"Yes," Nahuel responding, stiffening as well. "That's my…sister. Her ability is superior to mine. The difference between hers and mine is that hers is permanent. With my death, mine is instantly gone. With hers, it's carried out until what she has instructed is done, even beyond her death. It's something that cannot be undone, and the person she manipulates, is under a compulsion to finish the task, even if it means their death," he said, his voice darker. "I've been trying to teach Renesmee to turn her ability into a mind control…" He explained, "I have been training her for years," he said softly.

"Has she mastered it? How can her power be tuned into a shield?" Edward asked, enthusiastically listening.

"Not quite, but she is getting there. Renesmee will be able to block my sisters manipulation, if she's able to…push out, or deny my sister access to her mind. She can do this by using her memories as a shield. This makes her already thick shield into a mental shield that will make her hypersensitive to other's mind powers. Yours for example, is kind of like a headache attempting to come on" he said, but instantly explained the insult that Edward might have taken. "Not that you're a headache," he said, then continued "But it's like a sensation, I feel it. I instantly banish it, and concentrate on keeping it out. It takes years to practice this and not have to stand there for a few minutes. Multi-tasking is what takes the time, Renesmee has improved that she is able to block it and push but she loses the connection if she moves even a finger," I could hear the frown in his voice.

"Serena is here, but she mentioned someone else…you're father, someone named Joham," Edward's voice didn't hide a menacing excitement after he hissed out Joham's name. "If he is here, I can find him," he said darkly. Why did he want to kill Joham? How did he know he was angry with Joham?

Unless he saw everything….I cringed. But then I was confused. If Edward saw everything, I thought he'd be happy. He wouldn't have to worry about me being here too much longer. I would see Charlie one last time, then leave. He should've been happy that Joham would soon kill me, then he wouldn't have to worry about he and Bella's future about me anymore…Bella could go on thinking I was dead, because I really would be. But his voice was menacing towards Joham.

"Yes, I imagine she mentioned my father, he is angry with me for rescuing Renesmee. He doesn't care about me, though," He explained, "It's Renesmee he wants. He wishes to murder her for…murdering his successful experiment,"

"The…" Edward said, solemnly.

"Yes…" Nahuel said sadly. "Renesmee would've died giving birth to it, but he would have finally started the super race that he wanted," the sadness in his voice was a level of sorrow Renesmee had never heard from him before.

"I came home that day," he started "I saw her in a tub practically 5 inches deep in blood…and the…" he drifted on the last word "was on the floor, it was so tiny. But she did it a favor. Our lives are nothing for a child." He explained, his voice stronger. "She was inconsolable for a while. But she knew she did it for the child's own good." He concluded.

Why had he gotten so chatty with my father? The very man that was responsible for my fleeing this town years ago. Edward hated me. He wished death upon me. I felt a pang of betrayal on Nahuel's part. It felt like he was cheating…on me…with Edward!

I couldn't take much more. I was about to snap my eyes open but I stopped at Edward's words.

"She's much stronger than I was," Edward said sadly. "I am such a selfish creature. I wasn't strong enough to take her from Bella, because I did not want to lose her. Maybe if I had, she would not be living this life and wouldn't have been experimented on…" he trailed off. "I thought my life was so miserable one time, when Bella and I separated and I spent hours thinking she had killed herself…but that time seems like a vacation compared to now." Edward suddenly said. I could feel his cold hand gently cup my face. His thumb smoothed over my cheek bone. "I wished I would've just tried," he said sadly, dropping his hand from my face and holding my hand again.

I didn't want to. I tried to deny the feeling brewing in my chest. But my heart was warming with his words. He regretted his actions. But how could I be sure? I tried to push it away. He was manipulating me! He was manipulating Nahuel, so that Edward couldn't be blamed! He would have the satisfaction of being able to tell Bella how he "begged" me to come home to see her, how I denied to, he would turn her against someone I had come to terms with not seeing again anymore. But I wouldn't be able to keep Bella close, at least…She would've turned against me with hatred.

I tried to push the warmth that was trying to envelope my heart at his words…but I couldn't stop them. It was already warmth and I hated it…but loved it at the same time. I would still never be his daughter. I was still a complete stranger.

"Give her time," Nahuel advised. "She's thick skinned. Renesmee saw Bella about four years ago," Nahuel confessed.

"She did? Does Bella know?"

"No. Renesmee saw her from a distance with one of your clan mates…a short girl with black hair,"

"Alice," Edward breathed.

"Yes, I assume. That day, Renesmee's eyes were glued to her." He explained. "She wants to see her, despite her denying it."

I didn't want to see her. I tried to defend myself, but exhaustion was once again upon me.

"There isn't a day that goes by that…that I wished I could see my mother through crowds of people, or casually walking in the forest," Nahuel admitted.

"Are you guys going to leave once she wakes up since those other people are here?" Edward asked.

I could feel the bed move from Nahuels' shrug. "This is up to her," he said. "Are you asking us to leave?" Nahuel said, light humor to his tone.

Edward smirked under his breath. "No. But I would like an answer to my question," he said, his tone becoming serious after his question had been side stepped.

"Joham is pretty hard to find," Nahuel sighed. "If you wish to find him,"

"I can and I will," Edward replied after a few seconds.

Nahuel instantly became quiet but I could feel his hand tense. What happened?

Edward's hand tightened. Then he suddenly answered. "I think we can do that, if you wish,"

Did…Nahuel just let Edward read his mind? Why did he do that! I snarled, mentally.

"You can take her to your quarters if you would like to, or leave her here to rest if you wish, but I must get back to Bella. She will come here, and I don't want to be cleaning up Main Street if it starts to get littered with dead bodies," Edward said suddenly.

Nahuel's hand relaxed but didn't part.

Edwards's cold hand left mine. To my disgust…I wasn't ready to let it go. This was the only thing that didn't feel…foreign to me. I wasn't a stranger when he held my hand.

I finally felt enough strength in my eyelids to flutter open with still a hint of blurriness to them. But I could clearly see Nahuel. His head snapped into my direction. I tiredly blinked my eyes.

I cast my eyes around the room, setting on the windows that displayed that it was still dark outside. I let my eyes land on Nahuel who now leant over me, inspecting my eyes.

I was still surprised that if he knew Joham was here…Why hadn't he ran?

"You…came…for me?" I asked, exhaustedly.

His eyes widened in surprise at me. "Of course I came here for you," he said softly. "I'll always come for you."

I blinked at him and felt an involuntary tired smile enter my face, as I stared up into his eyes. I was expecting his shield of emotional blankness to get thrown up in front of me, but for five minutes he hadn't. He grinned back down at me.

"Let's get you out of here," he said, as he unplugged my cords and grabbed a bag from the chair in the corner.

"Don't judge me if they're awful…These are one of the occasions where I wished my aunt was pocket sized and I could pull her out for her help when I needed it," he frowned.

"As long as you didn't get me a burlap sack," I said, grinning tiredly as I clumsily pushed the blanket off my legs. I opened the bag after Nahuel set it on my side and inspected it, a pair of sweatpants and a baggy hoody. They actually looked like they felt like heaven.

I winced at the agonizing pain in my back when I attempted to reach behind me and untie the hospital gown I wore. My hand dropped to me side.

"Do you need help?" Nahuel said, hearing the hiss I'd made from the pain.

I turned to him and gave him a pleading smile.

Once I was changed into my sweats and hoody, they did feel like heaven. Almost like I wasn't wearing anything they felt so comfortable. I wanted to stretch in them and swallow myself in their inviting softness but my back wouldn't have allowed that. It was getting better, than but not as good as to do things on my own. Maybe in a day or two, it would be completely healed.

Nahuel scooped me in his arms and I rested my head on his chest. Then we left the Cullen house. Being in his arms, I thought would hurt. But they were so comfortable. We were in the middle of the forest, and the darkness was evident. It almost made me wish that they had stayed, but I felt safe.

In the distance, I could see small square shaped windows illuminating light in them. When we got closer, it was a small cabin.

Once we were inside, Nahuel gently placed me on the bed. After opening a blood bag, Nahuel extended it to me and sat next to me. I drained the bag, and could feel my back healing faster but it hurt. I relaxed into the soft mattress and pressed my head into the pillow.

I wasn't sure if I'd stayed awake any longer, but I was suddenly pulled into unconsciousness again. But it was blissful. I heard Nahuel change behind me, then relaxed into the bed next to me.
