Ok next chapter. see I said I'd update!
I don't own ROTG
This is a new arc!
Listen to the song "Come Little Children" when you read this.
Anyway onto the part/chapter/thingy!
They didn't know what was happening, but children kept disappearing in the middle of the night. They weren't dying since the lights didn't turn black. They weren't loosing belief since the lights didn't flicker for a second then disappearing. They just disappeared. One moment you'd see a bright, shining light, the next it'd be gone. And the Guardians were stumped. Sandy, Tooth, and Jack never noticed anything so they had no leads.
They've finally had enough.
"We can't just bloody sit here and wait for something!" Bunny screamed.
"But we have nothing. No facts to find culprit." North said.
"I agree with the kangaroo." Jack said, "We can't just sit here. We have to set a trap or something."
"And who would we use for bait?" Tooth said, "We can't just put an innocent child in danger of disappearing."
"We'll think of something!" Bunny shouted.
"But what?!" North and Tooth said back.
While they were arguing, Jack saw Sandy trying to get attention. He walked over to the dream-weaver and asked, "What?"
Sandy looked Jack right in the eye, pointed to the winter spirit, and then pointed to the globe. There, in the Pole, was a light.
Jack understood, "Use me." He confirmed and Sandy nodded.
Looking over at the others, who were still arguing, shouted over them to gain their attention, "Use me!"
That made them pause. "What?" North asked.
"Use me." Jack repeated, "I'm a child yes? I have a light. I could be used as the bait. I could always escape and if I am captured you would find me. This way we don't have to use an innocent child."
"Yes but Jack," Tooth began, "I-we don't want to lose you to whatever this is. What if you're hurt?"
"I don't care." Jack said, "Besides, if I'm caught I can help the other children, somehow. This is our only choice."
"This cannot be the only way!" North exclaimed.
"No," Bunny said, "Frostbites right. We can't do this to another child and he's not defenseless. But you won't do this alone. We'll be nearby should something happen."
The three looked to Tooth and North. North sighed, "I have bad feeling in belly but alright. I realize you would do this no matter what so I agree with Bunny. We will be there."
Tooth looked unsure for a moment but nodded anyway.
Jack gave a grin that didn't reach his eyes and said, "Sorry North. Looks like I won't be sleeping here tonight."
North gave a small smile but only nodded in response. He had a bad feeling in his belly and it just increased as the night drew near.
As the sun began setting Jack got settled in a tree at his lake. Sandy had put him to sleep and then he went off to do his job. Tooth was also working as Jack had explained she needed to keep belief up even if she wanted to be here. It was nearing the end of summer so Jack didn't have any work to do. North and Bunny were nearby since they were also free incase the figure were to show up. While they were nearby they were far enough to not be seen but close enough to keep the sleeping winter spirit in their sights.
They chose Jack's lake as it seemed whatever was making children disappear traveled the world, mostly following the night. As the night went on the two Guardians came up empty. It wasn't until the late night did something happen.
Bunny had been cleaning his boomerangs and North was sharpening his swords when it happened. A sweet melody rang through the air, but neither Guardian could track it as it sounded all around. They looked over to Jack only to find he was no longer in the tree but walking across his lake to a shadowed area of the woods, where neither North nor Bunny were.
Jack's blue eyes were half lidded and dull. His staff had been abandoned by the tree he slept in and the boy seemed not to care. North and Bunny dashed out of their hiding spots and raced towards the winter spirit.
Bunny reached him first and wrapped his arms around the non-responsive spirit, "Jack!" He called, "Hey Frostbite snap out of it!"
Jack didn't respond, remaining in his unresponsive state. North, figuring this had something to do with the melody, tried to cover the boy's ears but the boy just moaned and moved his head away, still trying to head to the shadowed area. North told Bunny to stay there with Jack as he inspected the shadow. He put his hands against it only to be met with the solid truck of a tree. He went back to the others to see Bunny still trying to get through to Jack.
"It is nothing but tree." North said to the Guardian of Hope.
"I don't understand what's wrong with the show pony." Bunny said, "But it must have something to do with the song." He looked up from Jack just in time to see pale hands coming from the shadow towards them. "North!"
Bunny threw a boomerang, while still holding Jack, at one of the hands. North began slashing at the hands only to see them disappear. He stared at the tree only to hear a scream from behind. He turned to see Jack fighting in Bunny's hold, trying to escape towards the shadow.
"Jack!" North shouted, rushing over to them. Then Jack's powers exploded outward from his fright, knocking both Guardians back and him to fall unconscious. As the winter spirit lay unconscious on the ground, the pale hands came back from the shadows and lifted the spirit slightly waking him. North and Bunny groaned as they got up but once they saw the hands guiding the barely conscious Jack, they ran forward to try to grab their youngest. But they were too late. The hands pulled Jack into the shadow and they disappeared, leaving the other two to bang against solid wood.
The song then stopped, leaving a haunting echo.
