"They told me there was gonna be a surprise.. I never once thought the surprise would be that I get to be a dad," he told her quietly as he looked back up at her still smiling, his hand still placed on her stomach.

"You really do look beautiful," he said before placing his hand behind her neck and pulling her in for a kiss.

She simply couldn't describe how happy she was right now. The man she truly loved was back and her family was now whole again. He was truly happy at the thought of him becoming a father and that's all the reassurance she'd ever need. Steve, the baby and the team behind her were the only people in the world that mattered right now. This was her family.

T his was her ohana.

The rest of the night consisted of Steve saying hello to everyone at the party, having a few jokes with his friends whilst never letting go of Jess' hand. Even when Grace had ran to him and practically threw herself on him he'd still managed to keep hold of it. The party was coming to an end and Jess found herself yawning quite a bit and they took that as their cue to leave. They said goodbye to the team and made their way home.

Steve had pulled up to their house, got out of the car and ran to Jess' side to open the door for her. As he did she heard him say "m'lady" and she was glad that even after nearly four weeks of him being gone it was still as easy for him to make her laugh as it had always been. They made their way into the house and headed for the kitchen for Steve to get a beer and Jess to get some water. It was pretty silent as they both took a sip of their drinks and sheepishly looked at each other. She didn't know how to approach the whole pregnancy situation with him after it being practically sprung on him.

"So..." she began to talk but was interrupted by Steve beginning to speak aswell at the same time making them both chuckle nervously. "Go on..." he told her as he smiled.

"I'm sorry I didn't tell you sooner about me being pregnant. Granted the timing wasn't perfect with you being gone but I wanted to be the one to tell you and I didn't think that telling you over the phone was the right way to do it. I understand if you're mad..." and her rant was stopped abruptly by Steve making her way over to her and placing his hands on her stomach.

She didn't know what to say. Her mind had gone blank. What was he thinking? Was he mad? She didn't have a clue on how he felt about the whole situation. He began to speak as his head was still lowered looking at her stomach.

"The only thing I'm mad about is that I was kept away for so long. That I couldn't speak to you as much as I wanted to, that I couldn't hold you every night as I was so used to. I couldn't be mad at you if I tried, but something like this..." and with that he looked at her and she was finding it so hard to read him right now. So she went back to her old habit of fiddling with her nails because she was nervous. She felt a strong, warm hand place his over hers and hold them to stop her from fiddling. She heard him chuckle.

"Why you nervous Jess?" he asked her. Not daring to look at him she muttered "because I really can't read you right now. Normally I can but I don't know whether you're happy, sad, angry or feeling anything about me having our baby".

He placed his finger under her chin and lifted her head. She gazed into his eyes and her heart melted. She had even missed just looking at him.

"What you just said there was all I have ever wanted to hear come from your mouth," he told her and watched her scrunch up her face.

"What that I didn't know whether you were happy or sad?" she asked him confused as to what he had just said.

C huckling to himself, he shook his head softly and began to explain, "No... OUR baby. The woman I love is carrying my first child. How on this planet could I ever be angry at that? You are all I ever wanted and will want. I love the fact that you are making me a father. Jess I couldn't be happier if I tried" he told her and wiped away the tear that was making its way down her cheek. He kissed her softly and relaxed when he felt her kiss him back. He picked her up bridal style which caused her to scream a tiny bit and he carried her upstairs where he proceeded to show her just how much he had missed her.

*Four Weeks Later*

Jess was about 16 weeks gone now and her bump was growing that bit more. Every day before she left for work or Steve did he'd kiss her then crouch down to kiss her stomach. Every day she fell even more in love with him which she didn't think was possible. Today she watched him leave before returning upstairs to take a bath. She wasn't in work until the late shift so she had chance to relax.

She spent the day watching TV before realising what time it was and rushed upstairs to begin getting ready for work. Her makeup remained neutral with just a nude lipstick and some eye shadow and eyeliner, her hair was already quite curly from being washed so that was stuck up into a messy but cute updo. She wore a green cropped top with a high waisted striped skirt. After putting on her bracelet and necklace she rushed down the stairs to grab her car and work keys and her purse and made her way to work.

She'd been in work a few hours already but making her way to her office she felt the need to sit down. She hadn't sat down since she'd started so felt like now would be the best time. She checked her phone to see she had one message that was unread. It was an unknown number but she opened it anyway, curious to see what it said.

How's work?

She was confused, she didn't recognise the number at all. Maybe it was Steve texting off a colleague's phone but then again his phone never leaves his side and he wouldn't do that knowing that she never bothered with unknown numbers.

"Jess, we're mega busy, we need you" she heard one of her staff members shout to her so pushing the text to the back of her mind she joined the staff behind the bar and carried on serving the customers.

A couple more hours passed, the music was pretty loud, the locals and customers were even louder and her head was pounding. 'Roll on maternity leave' she thought to herself and began to make her way around the bar. All of a sudden there was a loud smash and glass was flying everywhere. One of the staff, Joe, had flew around the bar to grab Jess to move her out of the way. After it had settled Jess looked at Joe before looking around the bar which was covered in glass and dust.

"You okay?" she heard Joe ask before she nodded and tried to figure out what had happened. She found her hand on her stomach where the piping had stabbed her at the charity event a few months ago and images flashed back. The glass shattering everywhere...

"Jess, JESS?" she heard Joe shout as he placed his hand on her shoulder. "You need to ring Steve" and with that she nodded and began to come back to reality.

Raising her phone to her ear was harder than she thought when her hand was shaking like crazy. It rang three times before he answered "hey baby". She couldn't talk, it was like no matter what she did or tried no noise would come out.

"Jess? You there?" she heard him ask and could tell he was already concerned. Snapping back to reality once again she stuttered "St.. Steve, my windows have just been put through.. The bar. It's a mess".

She didn't even know where to start. "You hurt?" he asked her worryingly. "No.. no I'm fine. Joe grabbed me away from it but I don't know what to do". She was in a daze. "I'm on my way baby. Get Joe to ring the police" she told him she would and put the phone down. Something clicked in her head and she found herself running to the back to get a brush and immediately started sweeping the shattered glass and debris off the floor. The police turned up and she could hear Joe talking to them, telling them what happened but she was zoned out. The door bell that lets them know someone's either walked in or out was ringing like crazy but still she couldn't snap out of it.

"Ma'am are you the manager?" she heard someone ask but carried on sweeping. The bar was pretty quiet except for the few customers that had been injured giving their statements to the police. She could have sworn she had heard Danny's voice and then Steve's but sweeping and cleaning seemed to be her only focus right now. The voice that had asked previously if she was the manager this time seemed to be a lot louder "MA'AM" she heard them say almost impatiently. But still, they got no response, only the brush sweeping round their feet to get the stray bits of glass that were there.

*Steve's P.O.V*

He and Danny had raced to the bar after Jess had phoned him. Danny was asking a million questions to which the majority of them had no reply.

"Hey! Is Jess or the baby hurt?" Danny asked after getting fed up of being ignored but this question finally got a reaction.

"She said no but she seemed pretty out of it. Like dazed" but Danny didn't have the time to reply as they'd already pulled up to the bar and found himself muttering "wow". The place was a mess, she wasn't lying. Police cars littered the car park outside, customers that had been involved were standing outside nursing their injuries or sat on the back of the ambulances being checked out. But he couldn't see her. The one person he needed to be okay and he couldn't see her. So he and Danny entered the bar to be met with Joe.

"Hey you okay?" Steve asked him. Joe was good to Jess, always took over if she needed time off so he did have a lot of time for him.

"Yeah I'm good, but Jess, I'm not so sure about" and he was met with the confused faces of Steve and Danny. With seeing their confused faces he then he pointed her out in the corner zoned out, sweeping in the same places repeatedly with a police officer trying to get her attention. "She's not stopped. She won't talk to anyone, if she brushes in the same place anymore we're gonna have to get the floor repaired aswell as the windows" and with that Steve began making his way over. He could hear the police officer trying to get her attention and could see he was getting more and more impatient.

"MA'AM" the officer shouted once again but Steve placed his hand on their shoulder and quietly said "It's okay, I've got this". The officer looked at Steve and was already at the point of giving up so he shrugged his shoulders and went to gather some more statements. Steve just watched her for a couple of seconds, she wasn't looking at anything in particular. She looked like she was in a trance.

"Jess," he called out to her but like the others he too didn't get a response. So he moved closer and placed his hand on her shoulder to which she jumped out of her skin. "It's okay, it's only me" and she seemed to relax a bit. "Jess you don't need to be doing this, come on, the police need a statement and I'll take you home" hoping she'd listen to him. "This place is a mess" she muttered to herself before walking towards the bar, getting the dirty glasses that hadn't been smashed and taking them through to the kitchen. He followed her getting a bit worried at how she wasn't talking.

"Jess talk to me," he begged her just wishing she'd say something, if anything. But still nothing. Not one word. Approaching her cautiously he placed a hand on the small of her back which again caused her to jump which caused the glass in her hand to drop and smash in the sink. And then she looked at him. She finally looked at him and he could see the tears in her eyes. "Come here" he told her bringing her in for a hug and as soon as she had cuddled into him he could hear her crying. Kissing the top of her head she heard him say quietly. "Come on let's get you home," to which she allowed him to guide her out, his arm wrapped around her shoulders. He told the officers in the bar that she would give her statement tomorrow but right now she needed rest and they seemed to be okay with that. Joe had already said that he would handle everything that needed doing at the bar and to just take her home which Steve appreciated.

The car ride home was pretty quiet. Jess had spent the whole journey looking out of the window whilst all Steve could do was look over now and again to check she was okay. He had pulled up at the house and she got out as soon as he had stopped the car. She hadn't even waited for him to come around to her side like he usually did. Locking his car and following her inside he found that she had already gone upstairs and figured she was in the bathroom as he could hear the shower. Deciding to give her some time to relax he went to the kitchen and got himself a beer. He could hear her shutting it off after a while, her moving about and going into the bedroom. Looking at the clock it had been about an hour so he made his way upstairs. Any chances of them talking had been slashed when he found the bedroom light off and her curled up in bed. He had a quick shower himself, got changed and got into bed. Kissing her shoulder he curled up himself and hoped that tomorrow would be a new day and that a good night's sleep is what she needed.

It took him a while to come to his senses but when he did he realised that Jess' side of the bed was empty. Looking at the clock that said "03:30" he sat up and decided to go find her. All the lights in the house were off giving him no clue as to where she was. She wasn't upstairs so making his way down the stairs he looked in each room but still no sign of her. Entering the kitchen he saw that the patio doors were open and the curtains were swaying in the cool wind coming from the sea. And then he spotted her. She was sat on the sand and she looked calm. He ran into the living room to grab the blanket off the back of the sofa and made his way outside to join her. Upon approaching her he placed the blanket around her shoulders and sat next to her. He didn't say anything; he just wanted her to know that he was there for her. They'd been sat there for about five minutes when she finally spoke.

"Today reminded me of the charity event all over again. Everyone being hurt, the glass everywhere. And it scared me. Not because I might have got hurt but because it may have hurt our baby, what do I do Steve? What if this was Ryan?" she asked and he saw the tear roll down her cheek. He knew tonight had really scared her.

"The only thing you need to do right now is focus on you and the baby. The team are looking into the bar, including me, not the police. We will find out if it was Ryan but that's something you don't need to worry your pretty little head about. I want you and the baby as healthy as possible, even if that means you leave Joe in charge of the bar for now. You need to rest and I need my Jess back" and she moved to rest her head on his shoulder. He took that as a sign that she had listened to what he had to say and that maybe it had sunk in that she did infact really need to rest.

He stood up and held his hand out to her. "Come on you need sleep, Wilson" and for the first time that day he saw her smile. It may have not been a big one but he'd take any form of smile. She placed her hand into his and he helped her up and they walked into the house together before getting into bed and drifting off to sleep knowing that he was there to protect her.
