Chapter 28: Meetings

Alida sighed, staring at the Nations gathered in front of her.

Every single Nation in Africa, South America, Southern Asia and Oceania. They finally achieved unity.

And now she had a job to do.

"As you all know," she said, "we finally have enough Nations on the same side to overpower the North. But they have something else now."

"A few days ago," Ricardo said, taking over for her, "we all became aware of a mirror world. Another world where the Nations are the opposite of ours."

"A world where this whole 'Cold War' is non-existent," Mahesh added. "A world where Nations actually care about each other, and not about the land they represent."

"But Italy went a little too far," Bruce said. "He captured a Nation from the other side."

"Land that we can't compensate for," South Africa said. "We've spoken to our own counterparts, and they're willing to assist us against Italy. We just need to save the Nation that was captured."

"Which Nation is it?" New Zealand asked.

"Romania," Brazil said. "We've also got pressure from South Africa's counterpart since she's friends with that Romania."

"And believe it or not, that girl can be scary," Australia said. "And creative. Actually, I fail to see how you two can be opposites."

"She has a nasty temper and many personalities," South Africa sighed. "But she has a few friends on her side that are willing to help. They're already involved, and thanks to Poland that decided to play his games with a few of them, they're willing to assist us, since, according to them, we're the lesser of two evils. Friends that include, asides from the four of us, Russia, Canada and China."

"The three largest landmasses," India said.

"Other than Romania, England and Norway are also involved. As well as France, Prussia, Spain, Poland and Lithuania."

"They are willing to form alliances with us," Brazil said, "but we need to save their friend."

"And if we don't?" Taiwan asked.

Taiwan had pitch black hair and red eyes. She also wore a black dress, and had a dark red flower in her hair.

"Think about it this way," South Africa said, "if they managed to capture one Nation, then they can capture others as well. And with each Nation they capture, their power grows. As you know, ours is the alliance approach, which means that they need to sign an alliance with us in order to give the same powers that they gain through capture."

"And if we don't get their cooperation," India said, "then they won't sign an alliance. If they're captured while they have an alliance signed, then we still have that extra power even if they are captured."

"And besides," South Africa said, "wouldn't it be fun if the Northern Nations are defeated by their own reflections?"

There were murmurs of agreement.

"Then there's another issue I would like to discuss," South Africa said. "We found out that on the other side, Deathplayers are once again on the loose."

"Deathplayers?" Namibia muttered. "But… how?"

"We don't know," South Africa sighed. "And we don't know why, either."

They heard the sound of vibration, and Brazil sighed, looking at his phone.

"It would seem that England and Norway of the other world are also captured," he said.

"That means two other lands that Italy has," South Africa sighed.

"Can they communicate with cell phones?" New Zealand asked.

"Not as far as we know," Brazil said. "But we have a few Northern spies in the other world. They've already signed alliance agreements with us."

When Matthew opened his eyes, he was confused. He wasn't quite sure what happened.

A dull ache in his chest brought back his memories, and his eyes widened.

Who had attacked his parliament building?

And where were the others?

He stood up carefully, gasping when the pain in his chest decided to remind him of its existence.

He breathed shallowly, not wanting to bring a new onslaught of pain.

He walked cautiously, deciding to see where the others were.

Austria breathed carefully, the pain of having a building in his capital being detonated still lingering.

He didn't know who it was, but he knew that it wasn't one of his citizens that did it.

It was an outside force. Unfortunately, he couldn't figure out who it was. And he couldn't figure out if this was an act of war, or an act of terrorism.

He needed to call Hungary and Germany, to see what they knew about this. And to see if Prussia had anything to do with this incident.

Portugal helped Romano to his feet. The two of them were still in Spain's house, hoping that he would return and give them the answers they were searching for.

It was alarming when they both experienced the same pain at the same time, but Portugal, being the older Nation, recovered faster and tried to help the younger.

"What happened?" Portugal asked.

"Don't know," Romano said. "But if I'm feeling this, then I can only guess Feliciano is feeling the same thing. I need to check on him, before that Potato Bastard does."

Vlad looked up when the door opened again.

He felt a chill when he saw Marius enter, and the other Romanian smirked at him, before turning behind him.

Oliver and Sigurd were carrying Arthur and Lukas inside. Vlad's two friends were unconscious.

"What did you do to them?" he demanded, standing up from his seated position on the bed.

Marius grabbed him before Vlad could reach his friends. Sigurd and Oliver smirked, placing their unconscious counterparts on the large bed.

"It's an unfortunate side effect," Marius said. "We didn't do anything to them. But if you give us any grief, then we will do something. Understood?"

Vlad nodded, and Marius smirked.

"Good boy," Marius said, letting go of him. "Tell me, is there anyone specific you want us to bring here? Bulgaria or Moldova, perhaps?"

"Leave them alone," Vlad hissed.

"And what are you going to do?" Marius chuckled.

He frowned, before grabbing Vlad's chin, forcing his mouth open.

"I only remember you having one fang," he whispered. "You, my dear counterpart, will prove to be interesting."

'More interesting than you think,' Vlad thought.

Anika was watching their meeting through the mirror, Jeng Soo standing next to her.

Well, not willingly. She had a grip on his braid, and as the North Korean discovered, she had a tight grip.

This was in case something happened at the meeting, or something was discussed that she didn't exactly agree with, she had someone that could call them.

She was a little concerned about the whole alliance thing, but in the end that was better than having your land forcibly invaded and captured.

But of course, it also meant that they had to save their allies. It would only be a matter of time before the alliance became null and void, and the one that captured the Nation would have the power, regardless.

"What exactly is your relationship to my counterpart?" Jeng Soo asked, surprising Anika.

"We don't interact much," she said. "We generally see each other at the World Meetings, and occasionally when he wants something to blackmail South Korea with, if only so that the other can leave him alone."

"Why would you have any blackmail material on South?"

"I have blackmail material on everyone. And as it so happens, South Korea's got the largest amount out of all of the Nations."

"…Can I see some of them?"

"Maybe."

Fletcher and Jett were on the couch, sleeping. It was halfway through the bulletin about all of the capitals being struck that they finally fell asleep.

It might have been afternoon in Canada, but in their own countries it was already very late at night.

The others left them alone, understanding the situation.

Well, almost everyone.

The Nations from the other world were curious as to how the two of them could fall asleep so easily, especially with other Nations around them, and especially on the same couch.

"I wonder what 'trust' is like," Eva said.

"That's what we're showing you," Toris said. "We're trusting you not to hurt any of us."

"It's not exactly in out natures," Gabriel said. "Unless we get a push."

Russia smiled, looking around at his friends.

They had managed to get a flight to Canada, and were already halfway there. The other three were fast asleep, and Ivan was glad that he could see them like that.

He wondered what was going on with the other Nations. He was also concerned about Anika. She had been dragged into this, and if anyone dared to hurt her…

He felt the same way about the rest of the BRICS group as well, but like the others, he was the most concerned about South Africa. She was the smallest, in both area and population. She was also the youngest among them, if you considered Northern influence. She had remained on her own for more than a hundred and sixty years, unless you counted the other Africans around her. She had gone a lot of time feeling unwanted.

India would claim that he was the first to have seen South Africa's insecurity, but it was Russia that noticed it first. It was during the Boer War, when he had joined South Africa's side just to mess with England. But then he realised that the girl didn't want to be under someone's control because she didn't want to be considered an asset. She didn't want to be a possession.

If she had managed to win the war for her independence, Russia would have gotten her as an ally. Not to become one with him, but as an ally. She was actually just as lonely as he was, and everyone that had helped her out in the war was actually just there to mess with England.

But she had fallen under England's control, and India managed to befriend her. As long as she was under England's control, Russia couldn't befriend her.

It had taken some time, but then the BRIC group was formed. Another reason why the other members are so protective of South Africa is because she was the last member to join, becoming 'BRICS'. She was also the one that was the most insecure about being around other Nations, having a history of being unwanted, and the other members didn't want her to feel like that.

She was also the only woman of the group, and the other four felt that it was their duty as men to watch over her. Of course, they didn't let her feel too overwhelmed, and they didn't give her the impression that they felt that she needed protecting.

In her spare time, South Africa liked to practice any sport that is popular in her country. And that included kickboxing. And she wasn't shy about where she kicked. And she could punch hard.

Germany sighed, looking at his phone.

The only contacts in the phone were Nations, and the message he was about to send would be sent to all of the contacts on the phone. He needed to figure out what happened.

Of course, he did consider the distance of the other Nations, and had planned accordingly.

When Matthew entered the living room, he saw that nearly everyone was gathered in front of the TV. They were all conversing deeply, and the news was playing in the background.

It would seem that he wasn't the only Nation to have experienced a bomb in his capital. But he was the only one to have his parliament building attacked.

"Matthew!" Matt said, noticing him first.

Matt, Francis, Feliks and Toris were at his side in an instant.

"Are you alright?" Francis asked.

"Yeah," he said. "Where's everybody else?"

"Arthur and Lukas were captured by their counterparts," Toris said. "South Africa is keeping an eye on the mirror to see her counterpart, and Prussia is doing the same."

"And whoever attacked us is going to pay," Denmark said from the couch.

"When did the Nordics get here?" Matthew asked.

"While you were unconscious," Matt sighed.

Russia glanced down at his phone when he felt it vibrate. He frowned when he saw the message displayed on the screen.

Emergency meeting. Berlin. 16 hours from now.

When he saw the other three stirred by similar vibrations. It could either mean the entire world, the G20 or G13. G8 is ruled out because his fellow BRICS members weren't part of the G8.

"What now?" Brazil groaned.

"Germany had better have a good reason," India hissed.

"Da," Russia said, "otherwise he'll have a little taste of my pipe."

"Doesn't he realise that there are others doing important things?" China groaned.

Everyone checked their phones, and everyone groaned.

"Sixteen hours?" Emil said. "Really?"

"At least he's giving the rest of us time," Australia said. "Not with a passenger plane, though."

"What's the big deal?" Gabriel asked. "Everyone has the power to create a portal to another country."

"Um," Tino said, "we don't."

"And Norway, England and Romania aren't here," Gilbert groaned.

"Well Australia and New Zealand can open a portal," Matthew said.

"Can't we just fly?" Matthias asked.

Anika entered the room, dragging Jeng Soo by his braid behind her.

"We need to wait for Russia and the others," she said. "They're coming from Brazil."

"Why'd you call them?" Seamus asked.

"They can help. After all, this is Russia we're talking about. And India and Brazil can definitely help out."

"I vote we wait for them," Jeng Soo said, trying to pry Anika's grip from his braid. At least it wasn't the curl.

"Fine," Gilbert huffed. "I need another beer."

Matthew stared at all the bottles lying around, starting to feel faint.

He saved those for special occasions.

When Lukas opened his eyes, he found himself in an unfamiliar room, on an unfamiliar bed. It felt as though his entire body was burning, and he let out a pained groan.

"Lukas?" a voice said, a familiar voice that he couldn't identify in his hazy mind. "Are you alright?"

Red eyes came into view, and it took Lukas a moment to recognise the owner.

"Vlad?" he asked. "How…?"

Vlad sighed, then looked to Lukas's side, where the Nordic could see Arthur was still unconscious.

"Welcome to hell," he said. "You've been captured by the other Nations too."

"Is there any way out?"

"We can't even leave the room, and there isn't a single mirror. I've tried."

"Have you tried magic?"

"Da. They're prepared, I'll give them that. So far, only the Romano and Seborga of this world seem agreeable."

"Isn't Seborga that Micronation?"

"Da. And Italy had told me specifically not to harm him."

"That could be our answer."

"Nu. Something tells me that they don't make threats. They give warnings."

"Ve, Germany, my chest hurts!" Feliciano cried over the phone.

"Ja, I know," Ludwig said. "My chest hurts too."

"Do you know who did that? Because it wasn't any of my people."

"Nein. But I will get to the bottom of this."

"Huh," America said, looking at his phone. "Wonder what it's about?"

His phone suddenly rang, startling Alfred.

"Hello?" he said.

"Did you get the message about the emergency meeting too?" Mexico's voice could be heard from the other end.

"Yep."

"What did you do this time, Gringo?"

"Me? I didn't do anything. It could be that Commie, or the Middle East, or even the Africans. I'm innocent!"

"We shall see."

"I wonder how Artie's doing?" Oliver said.

They were all gathered in the living room, with the exception of Seborga, whom Luciano had ordered not to be around the other Nations.

"Are you concerned?" Luciano asked, arching a brow.

"No, I just want to know if he's willing to try one of my cupcakes. I'm curious as to how they fare against poisons."

"Not a bad idea," Luciano said. "Fratello, would you like to help him?"

Flavio grinned, nodding eagerly.

"Nothing lethal, though," Luciano continued. "We wouldn't want them dying on us, now do we?"

Lukas helped Arthur sit up, and he sighed as the Brit absorbed their situation.

"We're stuck here, aren't we?" Arthur finally said.

"Da," Vlad said.

There was a knock on the door, making the three jump.

The door opened, revealing Seborga, Germany standing behind him.

"If you need to use the bathroom, I suggest you come with me," Seborga said. "You might want to clean yourselves up."

"And don't you dare try anything," Germany said.

The three nodded. This Germany seemed to be even more intimidating than their own Germany, and that was saying something.

"I don't think they thought this through," Arthur said, staring at the bathroom.

It was spacious, and the bath was large enough for three people to fit in there, and then some. They also removed the mirror, just in case.

"I don't see a problem," Vlad said.

"Are you kidding?" Lukas asked incredulously. "I have no interest in using the bathroom with an audience."

"The same here," Arthur said.

"What's the big deal?" Vlad asked, removing his trench coat. "We've gone sky clad for rituals before."

"That was different!" Arthur insisted.

"How? I don't know about you two, but I would like to wash the blood off of me."

The two exchanged a glance, sighing in annoyance and removing their own clothes.

"Fine," Arthur said. "But if any of us need to use the toilet, the others will avert their eyes."

Lukas and Vlad exchanged a glance this time.

And as one, all three eyes fell on the porcelain throne.

Flavio giggled, removing something from his closet.

The truth was, he had designed and made outfits for all the Nations, but he never managed to force them on the others.

Well, now he had three subjects that could not refuse.

It was late afternoon when the four finally made their way to Canada's house.

India sighed, holding his hand out to knock on the door.

"Big Brother Russia!" a child's voice called.

The four turned their heads to see three children approaching. Ivan smiled, recognising Alexandru.

"Privet, Moldova," he said, picking up the young Nation and lifting him onto his shoulders. "Who are your friends?"

"Andrei and Camille," Alexandru said. "They're from the other world."

The four older Nations blinked before looking back towards the other two. Now that they looked carefully, they could kind of see a resemblance between Alexandru and Andrei, and Camille looked kind of like an island that tended to gravitate towards France during meetings.

"How about we go in and you explain what's going on?" Ivan asked.

"Sure," Alexandru said. "I think the older Nations would be able to explain it better, though."

Ivan couldn't help but notice that the usually timid Alexandru seemed at ease around him. Part of him was happy, but part of him was a little concerned as to the reason.

Okay, so the BRICS are concerned about South Africa because her land is the smallest, she's technically the youngest if you consider colonisation, because she was the last to join and because she is the only female member.

And a lot of South Africans enjoy sports. And in South Africa, chess is considered a legit sport. The sports usually in schools are rugby and cricket for boys, and netball and hockey for girls (field hockey). Kickboxing is also a popular sport among boys and girls. Tennis, soccer and target shooting are also popular. The last one I can see Anika doing. There's a reason she's a good marksman.

Even though it hasn't been mentioned in the story so far, the biggest difference between Anika and Alida is that Anika practices any sport that is played in her country, while Alida prefers cultural pursuits such as music. That's their main difference, and if it ever comes up, you can bet that there will be conflict about it.

Also, I'm ignoring international developments that occurred after I started writing this story. That means Russia is still part of the G8, and no mention of Scotland's referendum for independence.
