She's been waiting here longer than she liked as she stood at the intersection with Malcolm's gang behind her. There's supposed to be a dusk duel tonight and Radley's yet to show up with another opponent. But it's not like it would do him any good. No one Radley sends out would be worth her time.
Suddenly someone came running from the opposite direction, where Radley's gang would be coming from. She groaned as he stopped to catch his breath, "I'm representing Radley tonight," he panted, "So I'll be your opponent!"
She scoffed. Just another pretender who doesn't know when he's in over his head. Well, he'll find out soon enough...
Axel woke up late the next morning after that episode he had the evening before. After getting tricked into a duel by Malcolm and his gang to rescue their 'hostage', he ran to the home over the restaurant where West and Nico were hiding due to a disturbance downtown which their father had to deal with. Not knowing when he'd be back, Axel decided to look after them for the night. But after a night's sleep, he woke up to find that they're not in their beds.
He went out the kids' bedroom and into Jorgan's, finding him slouched over on his bed with his kids beside him. Judging by the bandages, Nico has been nursing his wounds. "So, uh, mind if tell me what happened?"
It took him a while, but Jorgan went over what happened last night: a fire started at Malcolm's pub and Malcolm himself called him in to help put it out. Malcolm then assumed that Radley's gang came and did it, so he decided that the march over to their place. Halfway Radley was waiting with his gang with the same thing in mind. One thing lead to another and there started the fight. It took Klaus and small precinct hosing down both gangs before the violence stopped. He then had both leaders settle down and hash out an agreement. That took until late in the evening when Jorgan stumbled back here onto his bed.
"I just don't understand. Why would you get dragged into situations like this?" Nico asked.
"I don't like it anymore than you do," Jorgan said, "but please understand I'm only doing this to keep this restaurant and our house afloat."
"I still don't like it."
"I have to agree with her on that." Axel said.
"Well, like I said… I'm doing this for my family." Jorgan finalized.
Axel usually fins it really hard to convince Jorgan away from Malcolm and his gang. It was Malcolm who gave him this public restaurant in exchange for his services. If anything went wrong he could lose this place. Axel wonders if whether or not Jorgan knows the true price of being in one of Crash Town's gangs. "Alright then, I'll just leave you guys to yourselves right now."
Making sure the family get their privacy, Axel decided to head back home. It's still early in the morning so he's sure Klaus' not back out yet. He's probably asleep right now due to the long night he had. When he entered his own bedroom he took the opportunity to look into his cards as he spread them across the night table. The first card that caught his eye was his X-Saber Souza, his strongest monster. What he learned from X-Sabers besides their shared earth-attribute is their high ATK power, which makes it no problem for beating up monsters. And the cards he uses can give them an added boost even at the last second. Then he moved on to his Barrel Synchron and Barrel Warrior, two of his father's keepsake. These cards are the most powerful when together. And the longer the match is drawn, the more powerful they can be. That's the beauty of it.
"Axel! Axel, come over here!" Great. What's he want now? Probably wants to chew him out for causing trouble last night. Axel had no choice but to go into the kitchen where Klaus' waiting at the table, "I heard you had a little run-in with Malcom last night. Want to fill me in on it?" Axel sighed and settled down to explain what happened the night before. He even showed him the note left on the doorstep. After getting his word in, Klaus' expression lightened a bit, "So that's what happened. He faked taking Nico hostage just to get a duel out of you?"
"Pretty much, yeah. That and he got me against one of his new recruits, too."
"I bet you think that makes you tough and stuff now, huh?"
"Well, I wouldn't say that…"
"Well then how about, 'Let's make it three in a row'."
Axel's eyes lit in confusion, "You kinda lost me there."
"You heard me," Klaus stood up, "If you this you can handle one of Malcolm's crew, then might as well try your hand against your Grand P'pa!"
"So the person who discourages his grandson to duel is actually challenging him to a duel. Do you even have a deck?"
"Don't sass me, boy! I'm quite veteran when it comes to dueling! Now come on outside so I can beat you in a duel!"
A few minute later Axel and Klaus were outside past the town's gatepost with their duel-disks ready.
"Alright, you know the rules!" Klaus called, "Your points hit zero and you lose!"
"Let's Duel!"
Axel: 4000
Klaus: 4000
"What do you kids say; age before beauty!" Klaus cracked as he took his first turn, "I summon (1) Cloudian-Sheep Cloud(1/ATK: 0/DEF: 0) in ATK mode!" a small white cloud with a dark glare appeared (ATK: 0).
"Zero ATK points…" Axel wondered, "I bet I know where this is going…"
"We'll see! I place one card face-down and end my turn!"
"Okay, my turn," Axel drew his next card, "Let's start with something small: X-Saber Axel!" the beastly blue mercenary appeared (ATK: 400), "Attack that Sheep Cloud!"
"I activate my trap card, Spirit Barrier!" As Klaus opened his reverse-card, Axel cut down the white cloud, "As long as there's a monster on my field, I won't take any damage! And that's not all: when Sheep Cloud's destroyed in battle, two Cloudian Tokens(1/ATK: 0/DEF: 0) are summoned to my field!" two smaller clouds appeared (ATK: 0x2).
"Then I guess I should end my turn with this face-down card."
"Then it's my turn!" Klaus drew his next card, "I activate the continuous-spell, Cloudian Squall! Next, I release my two Cloudian Tokens to summon (2) Cloudian-Nimbusman(5/ATK: 1000/DEF: 1000)!" both clouds merged together and a pudgy-looking person took their shape in the clouds (ATK: 1000).
"And I guess that monster has some kind of hidden trick?" Axel asked.
"You're starting to learn! By releasing any number of water-attribute monsters on my field, I can add something called a cloudian-counter on it, raising its ATK by 500 for each one!" Nimbus man grew half its size (CTR: 2/ATK: 2000), "Next I remove the Sheep Cloud in my graveyard from play to special-summon (3) Cloudian-Storm Dragon(4/ATK: 1000/DEF: 0)!" a small dragon shaped by dark storm clouds appeared (ATK: 1000), "And once a turn, I can add a fog-counter on any monster on the field, and I'll put its first one on Nimbusman!" the cloud man grew a bit more(CTR: 3/ATK: 2500), "Alright, Storm Dragon, attack the X-Saber!" Storm Dragon blew a powerful gust that blew Axel away.
Axel: 3400
Klaus: 4000
"And that activates my trap card!" Axel revealed his reverse-card, "When you destroyed my monster, this trap called Liberty at Last forces both your monsters back into your hand." Both Cloudians dissipated.
"So that's what you were hiding under there!" Klaus chuckled, "If I hadn't been too cautious I would've dealt a bit more damage! At least I'd have a bigger lead since there's no monsters on my field. But I got that covered as well! I activate the continuous-spell Summon Cloud! This card's effect activates when I have no monster on the field, and lets me summon a Cloudian from my hand or graveyard! So I'll be summoning back Nimbusman!" the small cloud man appeared. "That'll do right now."
"Then it's my turn!" Axel drew his next card, "And I'll be summon Legendary Jujitsu Master in DEF mode!" the kung-fu golem appeared (DEF: 1800), "That's it for me!"
"My turn!" Klaus drew his next card, "Now my Cloudian Squall's effect activates, which puts a fog-counter on every monster in the field! And for each counter, Nimbusman's gets 500 ATK!"
Legendary Jujitsu Master: (CTR: 1)
Cloudian-Nimbusman: (CTR: 1/ATK: 1000-2000)
"Next I summon (4) Cloudian-Turbulence(4/ATK: 800/DEF: 0) to the field!" a small tornado with arms appeared (ATK: 800), "And when he's summoned out, he gets a fog-counter for every Cloudian on the field; him included!"
Cloudian-Turbulence: (CTR: 2)
Legendary Jujitsu Master: (CTR: 1)
Cloudian-Nimbusman: (CTR: 1/ATK: 2000-3000)
"But since you monster returns mine to my hand when they do battle, I won't attack this turn. Instead I'll end it with a face-down."
"It's my turn!" Axel drew his next card, "I summon X-Saber Palomuro!" the reptilian mercenary tuner appeared (ATK: 200), "Next I equip him with Synchro Boost, giving him 500 ATK points and 1 level (ATK: 200-7-/LV: 2)! Now tune him with my Jujitsu master to synchro-summon X-Saber Wayne!" the two monster merged into the new-age cowboy X-Saber (ATK: 2100), "And when Wayne's summoned, I can also special-summon a level-4-or-lower warrior-type monster from my hand, like my X-Saber Anu Pirahna!" the red-armored female mercenary appeared (ATK: 1800).
Cloudian-Turbulence: (CTR: 2)
Cloudian-Nimbusman: (CTR: 1/ATK: 3000-2500)
"And since there's one less counters on the field, my monster's stronger. So I'll have Wayne attack Cloudian-Nimbusman!" Wayne whipped out his pistol and fired many rounds that broke apart the cloud man. But as soon as he lowered his blaster, Nimbusman reassembled, "This is not gonna be easy, is it…" Axel huffed under his breath.
"You better believe it!" Klaus boasted, "Most of these Cloudians are battle-proof! You can't destroy clouds with swords and blasters! So if there isn't anything else…"
"I place one card face-down and end my turn."
"Then it's my turn!" Klaus drew his next card, "First Cloudian Squall activates and adds a counter to each monster on the field!"
X-Saber Wayne: (CTR: 1)
X-Saber Anu Pirahna: (CTR: 1)
Cloudian-Turbulence: (CTR: 3)
Cloudian-Nimbusman: (CTR: 2/ATK: 2500-4500)
"Next I summon (5) Cloudian-Ghost Fog(1/ATK: 0/DEF: 0) in ATK mode!" a mist-like phantom appeared (ATK: 0). The ghost wasted no time floating towards enemy lines before Wayne cut it down with the end of his sword, "When Ghost Fog's destroyed in battle, I can add fog-counters equal to the level of the monster that destroyed it! So I'm adding five more counters onto Nimbusman!" Nimbusman then grew more than twice his size.
X-Saber Wayne: (CTR: 1)
X-Saber Anu Pirahna: (CTR: 1)
Cloudian-Turbulence: (CTR: 3)
Cloudian-Nimbusman: (CTR: 7/ATK: 4500-7000)
"Nimbusman, attack X-Saber Anu Pirahna!"
"I activate the trap card Negate Attack!" Axel's reverse-card formed a barrier against Nimbusman's storm breath, "And the battle-phase ends here!"
"Then I remove Ghost Fog from my graveyard to summon Storm Dragon back to the field!" the cloud dragon reappeared (ATK: 1000), "And with Storm Dragon's ability, I add another counter onto Nimbusman!"
X-Saber Wayne: (CTR: 1)
X-Saber Anu Pirahna: (CTR: 1)
Cloudian-Turbulence: (CTR: 3)
Cloudian-Nimbusman: (CTR: 8/ATK: 7000-7500)
"Then, I summon (6) Cloudian-Acid Cloud(4/ATK: 500/DEF: 0) to the field!" a green anthro cloud with a mushroom head appeared (ATK: 500), "And just like Turbulence, I can add more counters on the field, one per Cloudian on the field!"
X-Saber Wayne: (CTR: 1)
X-Saber Anu Pirahna: (CTR: 1)
Cloudian-Turbulence: (CTR: 3)
Cloudian-Acid Cloud: (CTR: 4)
Cloudian-Nimbusman: (CTR: 8/ATK: 7500-9500)
"With that I end my turn!"
"Then it's my turn!" Axel drew his next card, "And I activate the spell Card Rotator! By sending one card from my hand to the graveyard, every one of your monsters are switched to DEF mode!"
"Dang it! Cloudians can't retain their shape while they're in DEF mode!" Klaus gasped, "I activate my face-down card, the quick-play Diamond-Dust Cyclone! By destroying a monster with four-or-more counters, I can draw one card for every four counters!" Nimbusman was whipped into a glittering cyclone while the rest of the cloud monsters dissipated.
"And that leaves you wide-open. Wayne and Anu Pirahna, attack him directly!" both X-Sabers struck the opponent down.
Axel: 3400
Klaus: 100
"That ends my turn."
"Then it's my turn!" Klaus drew his next card, and Cloudian Squall activated.
X-Saber Wayne: (CTR: 2)
X-Saber Anu Pirahna: (CTR: 2)
"And I'll use Summon Cloud to summon (7) Cloudian-Atlus(4/ATK: 1300/DEF: 0) from my hand!" a bulging white cloud monster appeared (ATK: 1300), "and since it's a special-summon, I'll also summon (8) Cloudian-Poison Cloud(3/ATK: 0/DEF: 1000)!" a bulking red mist appeared (ATK: 0), "Poison Cloud, attack X-Saber Wayne!" Poison Fog charged towards Wayne only to evaporate at the touch of his attack, "But when Poison Cloud's destroyed in battle, the monster that destroyed it goes with it, and you take 800 points of damage!" Wayne choked on the red vapors and was destroyed, with Axel sharing his discomfort.
Axel: 2600
Klaus: 100
"And to end my turn, I activate the spell card, Lucky Cloud! During the end-phase when I summoned two Cloudians, I draw two new cards." Klaus drew two cards.
"It's my turn!" Axel drew his next card, "I place one card face-down and end my turn!"
"It's my turn!" Klaus drew his next card and Cloudian Squall activated.
X-Saber Wayne: (CTR: 3)
X-Saber Anu Pirahna: (CTR: 3)
"I activate Pot of Greed to draw two cards! Next I activate the spell card Cost Down! By discarding one card from my hand, the levels of every monster in my hand gets reduced by 2! That makes it more easier to summon my (9) Cloudian-Eye of the Typhoon(8-6/ATK: 3000/DEF: 1000), by releasing Cloudian Atlus!" the cloud monster suddenly swollen and grew to three times its size, also turning dark. Soon Axel's facing a colossal one-eyed storm-cloud (ATK: 3000).
"And what make this particular cloud so special?" Axel asked, unimpressed.
"Besides 3000 ATK points, when Eye of the Typhoon attacks, it switches the battle-modes of all non-cloudian monsters on the field! It comes in real handy especially when I equip it with Fairy Meteor Crush!" the cloudian suddenly gained an onminous pink aura, "Now my monster can deal piercing damage! And now to put all those points to use!" the cloud monster's body then changed and distorted, spinning around it's own wide eye. If created a giant storm that blew hard against Anu Parahna, until she gave in against the winds, only then the storm died down.
Axel: 900
Klaus: 100
"I activate the effect of X-Saber Palomuro in my graveyard! By paying 500 points, I can bring him back to the field!" Axel's reptilian X-Saber returned (DEF: 300).
Axel: 400
Klaus: 100
"That's fine by me! I'll end my turn, so make your next one count!"
"Alright then, it's my turn!" Axel drew his next card, "I summon X-Saber Airbellum in ATK mode!" the anthro-lion tuner appeared (ATK: 1600), "Next I activate my face-down card: the trap Gottoms' Emergency Call! With this, I summon X-Sabers Anu Pirahna and Wayne back from the graveyard!" the two X-Saber warriors returned, "Next I tune Airbellum wuth Anu Pirahna to synchro-summon X-Saber Souza!" the two mercenaries merged into the beastly caped swordsman (ATK: 2500), "Now I activate his special-ability: by releasing an X-Saber like Palomuro, Souza can destroy any monster in battle, no matter how powerful it is!" Souza sharpened his swords and slashed down the giant cloud mass into nonexistence, "And now that your field's empty, X-Saber Wayne, take out the rest of his life-points!" Wyne fired his last round of lasers at Klaus.
Axel: 400
Klaus: 0
"I guess that means I'm stronger than even you, Grandpa Veteran." Axel goaded as the holograms vanished.
"Shaddup, that's just luck! But I do admit you got a lot stronger… Maybe it is about that time."
"Wha? What time?" a puzzled Axel followed Klaus back to the house until they reached his room, where he stopped by his bed, "Here, boy; help me move this thing," Axel helped scoot the bed from the corner until it's completely out of it's usual spot. When Axel looked over he could see a large trap door where the bed used to be over. Klaus grinned snidely as he saw Axel's subtle expression and opened up the trap door for a flight of stairs, "Yeah, bet you never knew there were any stairs below where you sleep all the time now, did ya? C'mon!" Klaus and Axel walked down the stairs into the dark, Klaus searching the walls for a switch, "It's gotta be here somewhere… There it is!" with the flip of a switch the light flickered on and lit a rather-large room. There's a computer desk against the opposite wall, a bookshelf with only a few books lying in it, and what really caught his attention was that there's a black duel-runner lying on its kickstand in the middle of the room.
"Grand P'pa…" Axel spoke, his jaw still loose, "Wanna tell me what a duel-runner's doing under my bed?"
"Like it? This was you father's," Klaus said, "…Axel, I know what I'm about to tell you is so sudden, but you parents had an accident while riding, back when you were little."
"Accident…" Axel looked over his shoulder towards Klaus, "You mean they're…"
"In the Great Racetrack in the Sky," Klaus finished, "Some of Radley's men can by one day and brought it here, all beat up. You were just a kid back then, and I was afraid you couldn't handle it so I avoided the subject. I thought the cards they left you would clue you in, but when Malcolm brought up your mother the other day… I guess I couldn't hide it any longer."
Axel looked back down on his father's duel-runner. He though back to the cards they left, and the hat given by her mother, he was told it's her favorite hat that she wouldn't part with. Yet she trusted her son with it. Now that it sunk in, that could've been the hint. "So that's why you tried to keep me away from turbo-dueling…?"
Klaus nodded, "I guess like father like son. You were raised to have an interest with this turbo-duel stuff. You know, Toru's parents died in the same accident, too."
"Toru's parents were there?!" Axel gasped, "He hinted that they died, but they didn't mention this…"
"I'm sure it's hard for him as well," Klaus said, "You parents were good friends with Toru's. In fact, you father became a turbo-duelist mainly because of Toru's father. Like I said, like father like son," Klaus sat down at the end of the staircase, staring off into space, "The difference is now's that Toru's already finished his runner and left. And judging from that game you're always playing at Jorgan's restaurant, that story you just told me, and that duel we had, I'd say you've grown quite proficient as a duelist.
"Grand P'pa…"
"I can't stop you any longer. This duel-runner's your now. Use it to pursue your dreams," Klaus said and stood back upright, "Besides, this town's getting dangerous. Malcolm and Radley could butt heads again at any time."
"But you'll stop 'em like last time, right?"
"From the chaos they caused, we just got lucky. In fact, this is actually a good time for you to move into the city."
"Me? What about you?!"
"You forget, I'm the town's sheriff. I need to be here," Klaus walked towards the bookshelf, "And beside, it's about time you start taking care of yourself. I'm tired of you mooching off an old man. It's only a matter of time 'til you come to that age."
"…You know, I can't help but notice you don't seem torn up about what you told me just now." Axel stated.
"HEY! Just because I don't bother to show it don't mean I don't care about 'em! Sure, your mom and dad ain't my own kids but I love 'em either way!" Klaus passed Axel shoving a book at him, "Besides, groan men don't need to cry! Shoot, getting me to cry like a—you must be crazy!" Klaus stomped back up the stairs; Axel could've sworn he could hear breaking in Klaus voice as he left.
And so Axel spent the days ahead hitting the books. He spent his free-time studying up on turbo-dueling, duel-runner mechanics and basic motorcycling. Not only that, Klaus' been having him prepare for the day he has to go out on his own. About a year later, that day's finally here and he and Klaus are already out at the truck, with his father's duel-runner at the back. "I think that's about it! Now all we need to do is hit the road!"
"Axel! Wait up!"
Axel turned around and saw Nico and West skipping towards him. "Hey, guys! You're up early."
"We don't wanna miss sating goodbye before you go!" West huffed.
"Besides, we have a going away present for you! Here!" Nico gave Axel a covered basket.
Axel smiled a bit, "That's very nice of you. Thanks."
"We know it's your dream to be a turbo-duelist," West said, "I know you'll be a famous turbo-duelist, someday!"
"Our dad had a business to run here, so we can't come," Nico said, "But we'll always be cheering you on from right here!"
"Now that's real appreciated. I won't forget you guys," Axel stepped into Klaus' truck, "Alright, I'm ready. Let's head out!"
Klaus got the engine started and began to drive out of town. Axel looked back towards the disappearing town, watching Nico and West waving him off at the gatepost.
"Good luck!" they both said.
Axel saluted them until the town became overshadowed, then looked onto the road ahead, ready to start on his new journey.
