Getting inside made my fears lower but I wasn't happy, when most if not all the agents I passed gave the universal signal for 'watching you' and I resisted the urge to prove their paranoia.
"Alright here's the way to your room." I turn as Nat held out a sheet with a layout of the helicarrier as I had been informed the flying death machine was actually called. "Sweet I get a lay out!" Nat made a face but smiled all the same.
"Just come when you're called alright? You're in enough trouble as it is." I sighed, rolling my eyes and waving as I sprinted down the hallway.
"Yeah whatever!" I followed Nat's directions finding the room with some ease though I did hit some dead ends...and had some guns pointed at me when I didn't have the proper ID...Anyways! Found my room and it was standard, government grade bed with light blue sheets and a comforter, one small pillow and a light overhead. I gave a sigh and fell happily into the bed much comfier than the hard seats of the jet...And no one to bother me either. Sleep took me in it's ever taunting grip as the helicarrier flew through the sky.
I was fourteen when my grandfather passed, it had devastated both my Oma and I. Though I could put on a face and pull through the loss...Oma wasn't so lucky. It was the day after his burial. He had been laid to rest beside my mother, father, sister, and brother. I had headed downstairs to grab something to munch on when I heard a soft sobbing coming from the living room. I found Oma sitting in Grandfather's chair clutching their wedding photo. I watched my brows drawing together in pain for her, I wanted to make her smile...to see her happier than she was now. I remembered the time when my Grandfather had swooped Oma up one night and just danced around the room with her. She had been so happy then, and I had wanted her to be happy like that again. I drew in a soft breath and began to sing a song from a movie I liked to watch as a child. As the sound reached her ears her eyes glazed over and she looked up and that smile...She looked young again. As she spoke softly.
"Jonathan?" She laughed as she stood and spun around, I saw it then my powers at work a phantom of my Grandfather laughing and spinning her. Saying sweet nothings as as they danced around the room. Her grief forgotten for a moment as the dance continued. Before the song and dance came to an end he leaned down kissing her cheeks where the tears had dried. And she laughed one last bitter laugh before my spell wore away. It was like she had been doused in cold water. Her eyes turned to me the blue hard as steel.
"Cameron!" I jumped, she never called me by my name unless I was in trouble. She rushed over her eyes wide with panic.
"Do not ever use that curse! Again!" I fell back but nodded my head shakily. Oma saw my fear and confusion, I saw the anguish fill her eyes; but said nothing as she set down the photo and left. I sat there on the floor tears streaming from my eyes.
"I—I just wanted to see you smile..." I whimpered curling in on myself.
Not even she could see your gift for what it was...
I jolted from the memory as a knock pounded on my door, at first I ignored it, whoever it was, was on a mission and more knocks followed till I finally groaned in defeat.
"What?" I asked sitting up and scratching my head, hair having fallen out of the ponytail into a mass of wavy tangles. I stretched and then heard the Captain's voice. "Suit up we found Loki." I blinked memories forgotten for now.
"Wait what?" I managed to untangle myself from the confines of my blankets to open the door where Cap stood.
"Suit up." He stated again before turning on his heel and rushing down the corridor. I sighed but followed my head was pulsing unpleasantly but it would go away soon, I hoped. My 'suit' was a long sleeve shirt with a bullet proof vest, black material pants that were similar to leggings making it easier for me to move. A holster with a gun that fired non lethal rubber rounds, and knee-high boots that got traction on pretty much any surface. I also finished the look by placing my hair in a tight high ponytail to keep it out of my eyes. Exiting the prep room I found the Captain waiting for me. "You ready?"
"Yeah sure, why not, totally ready to take on a god."
"He's not a god."
"Tell that to our ancestors."
We boarded the jet Natasha and a co-pilot at the front leaving Steve and I to remain in back. Natasha smiled back at me giving me a quick nod. Half tempted to ask her for a suppressant as the engines gunned and the jet jolted in lift off.
"So where are we headed?" Steve glanced up in full Captain America garb my heart stuttered a bit at an old memory.
Me as a little girl holding a teddy bear with the same outfit sewn by Oma, I giggled running about the house with the bear kissing it's cheek with a fondness. "We're gonna get married." I blink glancing over to Steve who looks a little concerned.
"Sorry what?"
"We got a lock on him in Stuttgart Germany."
"Great any idea why he slipped up?" I asked as I attempted to keep my hands from shaking as I gripped onto the jets wall. Steve seemed to noticed and gave a kind smile.
"Not a fan of flying."
"Nope." I glared and sucked in a quick burst of breath as the jet jolted.
"How long till we get there?" I whined as Nat glanced back.
" We'll get there when we get there." I stuck out my tongue crossing my eyes, I am very mature I'll have you know. Steve smiled at the antics, easily shifting his weight from foot to foot as the jet jolted with turbulence. I on the other hand gripped onto whatever I could for dear life.
"So how's Klara?" I blinked at the new attempt of conversation then realized he meant Oma.
"Oh Oma is fine...I guess they haven't let me call her in a while."
"You mean you haven't seen her?"
"Nope not since I was taken in as a 'danger to the public'." Not one of SHIELD's finer moments.
"So how long have you been with Shield?" I shrugged.
"Well I was sixteen with they brought me in and I just turned twenty one...So dang five years." Steve's brows furrowed and he let go of the latch he held onto moving closer.
"Maybe once this is all settled you could ask for some time out?" I was about to retort but it was cut off as the jet jolted and both he and I slammed together. Steve's hands shot out to catch us as I toppled forward into his sturdy chest. One arm wrapped around me as he steadied us I in my panic had practically latched onto his uniform. Eyes widening I pushed back hoping to God my face wasn't as flushed as it felt.
"Sorry." I muttered out, Steve in return said nothing...A blush of his own creeping up into his cheeks.
"Alright we're here—Oh no." Steve and I looked up as Natasha pulled up the feed from some local news broadcasts from what I could make out in my conversational German was that a gala being held in the city had been raided...by an unknown amount of people or in this case person. Some scientist had been attacked...and police forces were useless.
"Head out both of you!" Natasha was busy working the controls and in my hesitation Steve took the initiative wrapping an arm around my waist as the back door opened. "Ready?"
"Wait—No—" My panicked cry was cut off as he leapt though the ground was only a few feet below I still closed my eyes as my heart did a little tap dance on my ribcage. We landed I was shocked the Steve was able to stand as we both regained our bearings.
"Damn it, warn a girl when you're going to do that." I hissed attempting to shake off the dizzying feeling of a small heart attack. But our attention was drawn to the screams of a terrified crowd and without a second thought I unlatched my gun from its holster and headed toward the sounds of distress. Natasha had dropped us off a few blocks away and from what I could tell the crazy man had already made a spectacle. Something Shield was probably hoping to avoid, as I moved to take some shots Steve grabbed my shoulder pushing me back against a building.
"Are you nuts?" I blinked more or less dumbfounded.
"He is going to hurt innocent people—"
"And you're going to get killed if you go in without a plan." I glared for a moment but sighed nodding.
"Right..." We were silenced though as the crowd clammed up.
"KNEEL!" I turned at the shout as a corralled group slowly turned to face the now fully garbed Asgardian. Golden accents to complete the warlord look, the spear clutched in his hand. More like a sharp accessory than a weapon of mass destruction. Steve and I watched though as he swaggered through the throng of terrified people.
"Is not this simpler?" He looks over the crowd even from here I see his maniac grin.
"Is this not your natural state? It's the unspoken truth of humanity that you crave subjugation; the bright lure of freedom diminishes your life's joy in a mad scramble for power, your identity. You were made to be ruled." I pulled against Steve's grip my mind filling with hatred as I recalled the speeches and writings, I had found of Johann Schmidt. How he had wanted the mantle this...Loki was vying for now. "Wait."
"He's spouting off the same shit as Hydra, I'm not going to let this guy think we need more of that."
"Just...wait for him to be distracted." I glared but relented relaxing as Loki's speech was halted. An old man stood up, his face spoke of wisdom and hardship, reminding me of grandpa Jo.
"Not to men like you." Loki smiled dementedly, gleefully.
"There are no men like me."
"There are always men like you." Loki is silent for a moment and I see his grip tighten on his spear.
"He's going to kill him." I hear myself saying, Steve's grip on me loosens as he too realizes the elders fate.
"Look to your elder people. Let him be the example." Seeing the staff power up I launch out of our hiding space but Steve is quicker than I am. As a light fires from the spear Steve lands in front of the man shield in place to defend. The power deflects over the vibranium and smacks back into Loki who looks winded as he hits the concrete. I weave through the people reaching the older man gun in hand.
"Are you alright?" I manage in very broken German, hoping Loki doesn't speak it. "Yes." H e seems shaken but looks like he'll live.
"You know the last time I was in Germany and saw a man standing above everyone else, we ended up disagreeing." Steve walked slowly forward my finger poised over the trigger in case Loki makes a sudden move.
"The Soldier, the man out of time." He cackles lightly as he stands again I raise my gun at him. The movement taking his gaze from Steve to me.
"And the surprise guest." I glare but remain silent the old man still at my side. I break my gaze with him as Natasha swoops in guns armed and ready.
"Loki drop the weapon and stand down!" He fires at the jet and I move my first bullet fired I shoot at his clones. The bullet passes through and the image dissipates. With the new development people begin to panic. I grab the old man and start weaving through the crowd as Steve launches himself at Loki.
"G et out of here now and find shelter!" I shout to the people moving to grab more as I fire another bullet to dissipate the next Loki. Releasing the old man I turn on my heel back to the fight.
"T hank you!" I glance back to see the old man standing there I give a quick nod then I rush back. Steve landed roughly on the ground and I fired at the real Loki this time the rubber bullet bouncing off of his helmet. He turns with a horrid look of glee filling his eyes Loki suddenly appears before me.
"That was rude." His hand lashes out to backhand me, but I duck and without a second thought I inhale a quick breath then start to sing a few notes. This makes him freeze as his eyes almost begin to cloud over. But that stops as his hand lashes out
again this time managing to entangle itself into my hair. Giving a hard yank my song stops, and he has pulled me to him.
"So you do possess the gift?" I blinked one hand clawing at his to let go of my locks the other he knocks my gun out of. He leans in close though his eyes trapping mine. "But so misunderstood. And we both know, you much rather use it for other purposes." His voice is sickly sweet as a once again a tendril of green...energy was what I could best describe it as flitted between us and a wave of pain fills my head and he releases me only to go back to fighting with Steve who hit him in the head with his shield. I stay crumpled on the ground clutching my head as I attempt to ignore the pain throbbing there.
"Cam, what's wrong?", I hear Natasha's voice in my communications earpiece.
"I don't know," I shout finally the pain ebbs a bit and I find my footing to run over launching onto Loki's back. I lock my arms together as he moves to knock me off my legs lash out to trip him at least. But avoiding the antlers was hard and when he felt my grip slacken he took the chance lashing back with both elbows hitting my ribs. I coughed wetly before releasing my grip landing on my feet he turned ready to hit with the spear but I managed to dodge but his other fist connected solidly with my jaw sending me back a few feet and landing on my back the air left my lungs. I gasped attempting to get the air back as he stalked closer but Steve managed to take his attention again. Just as I could finally start breathing again, my ear piece frizzled with static feedback and I ripped it from my ear. Only to hear AC DC blaring from the jet's amplifiers. I sat up rubbing my sore head, and sighed as Steve looked to me questioningly.
"His royal assness has finally graced us with his presence."
"Aw, I missed you too Camcorder." He swooped down hitting Loki square in the chest the AC DC still blaring as he landed activating his weapons. I glared but picked up my gun aiming for the now very confused Loki.
"Make a move reindeer games." I approached with Steve standing to Tony's left. Watching with no small amount of interest as the golden armor floated away as if it was never there, and he held up his hands in surrender. But also I became pissed that Loki decided three was a bit more than he could handle. Tony's ego didn't need that much stroking at this point.
"Good move." I kept my gun up though not trusting the way to sudden surrender. "Mr. Stark."
"Captain." Yep it was going to be a long...unfun flight home.
Once again huge thank you to WinterLifeAmerica, sorry this update took longer then usual I was having life problems but things have settled so hopefully things will pick up again!
