I found a quiet spot with a window but as usual my solitude was quickly disrupted. I ignored the footsteps even though they were clearly headed for me, glancing to the side I saw Coulson and he looked...annoyed to say the least.
"So disappearing is how you handle this?" I huffed letting my head fall back whacking against the metal border. Keeping my gaze to the horizon.
"I thought I was 'free to do as I pleased'."
"Within reason, and you were not forthcoming with the issues of the mission—"
"I! Had no problems. Tony aggravated the situation and Steve was trying to take control that he never had in the first place—"
"Cameron." I stopped letting my arms cross over my legs making me as small as possible.
"What do you want me to say? Yes I did not do my best. Yes I made mistakes, guess what I'm human—Oh wait no I'm a freak and freaks have to be perfect—" "Cameron!" I flinched at this, Coulson is silent after his shout full well knowing how I get when someone shouts at me.
"I'm sorry...Obviously you need to calm down. I'll be in the control room." All he gets is a nod to know that I had heard. I lean against the glass even though my heart pounds at the height and my head swims for a moment I don't move. I hear comms from the bridge and people pass by but I am left in blissful peace...until big, blond, and buff finds me.
"So... This is where you have hidden yourself." I glance up eyebrow quirked in confusion. Thor smiles a model smile clearly this guy has done well with the ladies and that flash of pearly whites he thinks he can win me over.
"So you're the one that crashed into our jet?" This makes him pull back the smile drops for a second. But it's back and a chuckle with it.
"I apologize for my...actions—"
"Well you hit Tony pretty hard from what I heard so all is forgiven on my account." I hoped that would send the clear message of get lost but I guess I think too highly of people at times.
"Is it true?" I sigh eyes rolling as I turn to face Thor again.
"Is what true?"
"You have it? The gift I mean?" I stand my legs popping back into place as they take my weight again.
"I have many gifts but I'm sure you actually mean the Siren factor?"
"The—"
"When I sing I can control people?" My voice teeters on the edge of annoyed I'm not a diplomatic kind of person.
"Yes the gift—"
"You mean curse." This makes him falter.
"My Mother gifted your ancestral line—"
"No, she gifted it to one and somehow it passed on."
"Well Lena can't be the Guardian forever—"
"Oh so that's who I can blame for all of this—"
"I'm not saying there is someone to blame."
"Look, Thor is it? My life has been a shit show thanks to this so called 'gift' my grandmother's even worse so pardon me for now dropping to my knees in thanks." He is silent for a moment eyes studying the grated floor.
Congratulations you managed to shut him up, rare feat indeed.
I wince as once again Loki's voice echoes in my mind.
"Are you alright?" I shake my head it seems he's left for now.
"Yeah I'm fine—"
"Perhaps you should see one of the healers?" I sigh this guy is not getting the go away message so I indulge him a little.
"Yeah fine whatever. " He smiles again, and I wonder if there is a time when this guy doesn't smile. He gestures to the end of the hallway and I being to walk shoving my hands deep into my pockets, we walk. I follow the signs, which in turn take us to the medical lab when I stopped noticing the star spangled man...creeping? Why in the world would he be? My curiosity piqued I turned to Thor.
"Hey I forgot something in my room you go on ahead okay big guy?" I gave his arm a pat and he none the wiser left. I on the other hand followed the Captain. Catching with relative ease though he didn't make it easy constantly checking over his shoulder I would dodge into hallways and empty rooms when needed, thankfully when we reached the hallway that was devoid of hiding spots a group of agents passed that I could blend in with. Finally he reached a door that suited his needs, but no key. I watched silently as he used his inhuman strength to break the solid steel reinforced door open.
"Now correct me if I'm wrong but if you don't have a key for it, I don't think you're allowed in." Steve jolted in clear surprise turning to face me. He let out a breath he must have been holding and looked guiltily between the now broken door and myself.
"Cameron..."
"Captain." He sighed and looked back to the room.
"Can I have your word you won't go tattling on me?" I shrug.
"Sure so what brought about this espionage?"
"Tony." I sigh rubbing my already aching head.
"He's gotten into your head." Steve sighed.
"He made a good point though..." I walk past him then.
"Fine either we prove him right or very wrong...I personally am hoping for the later but who knows." Steve edges forward then leaps up onto the gangway. I blink stupefied for a moment.
"Damn...what did they do to you." He looks down at me after climbing over the railing, holding out a hand.
"Can you make it?" I look up at him wary.
"Remember I hate heights...much less jumping to and from them."
"Come on you're file said you have enhanced abilities."
"Glad to know my file is passed along." But I tense my legs bending at the knee and push myself off the floor getting decent air flailing like a panicked bird in flight I manage to grasp Steve's hand in mid air, as well as the railing he grunts taking some of my weight and pulls me up.
"See not so hard." I huff following behind. "Easy for you to say."
"So what are we looking for?"
"Weapons." I blink giving the back of his head a look.
"You do realize this is SHIELD...last time I checked the most dangerous thing they had on here was Banner—"
"Last time I checked they also imprisoned you and trained some of the worst assassins in history."
"Okay point taken..." We go silent again as we begin digging, all the cargo looks the same and either we find boring weapons...Or power sources. SHIELD doesn't hide much...or at least they hide what I could care less about.
"Cameron." I turn seeing Steve has found something.
"What is..." My words die in my throat as I am greeted with a familiar image the skull with a writhing mass of tentacles spilling from where it's grinning maw should be.
"So they were hiding HYDRA weapons." I manage to spit out.
"You know about HYDRA?" Steve doesn't look at he his hard gaze still glaring at the gun and mask in the box.
"I did some reading on them and their leader...also about what you did."
"Tony was right..." I sighed.
"Thank goodness I'm not a betting girl." Steve picks up the bulky thing as easily as if it weighed a few pounds.
"Come on." I followed silently behind as Steve makes his way back to the lab where we find Fury already investigating the leak.
"So what is phase 2?" Steve slams the gun on the metal table and all attention turns to us.
"Phase 2 is Shield uses the cube to make weapons; sorry computer was moving a little slow for me." I stay back hoping attention will not be drawn to me.
"Rogers we gather everything related to the Tesseract this does not mean that we—"
"I'm sorry Nick, but you're lying." Tony swivels a screen to face everyone a schematic of a new version of the HYDRA weapon displayed.
"I was wrong Director the world hasn't changed a bit."
"Of course not, we're just better at lying about it." I snap out, and Fury turns his gaze to me.
"You need to leave." I glare moving out of the shadows and closer to Fury.
"Actually I'm enjoying seeing you squirm on the hook for once, I think I'll stay." Tony chuckles at this.
"Did you know about this?" My attention turns to Thor and Natasha who have just entered as Banner now shifts the accusations.
"You wanna think about removing yourself from this environment Doctor?" Natasha is on edge clearly something has spooked her she must have had words with tall, dark, and moody in the cell.
"I was in Kalakuta I was pretty removed."
"Loki is manipulating you—"
"And you've been what exactly?"
"You didn't come here because I bat my eyelashes at you."
"Yes but leaving because suddenly you get a little twitchy, I'd like to know why shield is using the Tesseract to build weapons of mass destruction."
And so the game begins...
I wince grabbing my head again as pain throbs through it. Steve glances over but his attention still on Banner.
"Because of him." Fury points a dismissive finger at Thor.
"Me?"
"Last year Earth had a visitor from another planet with a grudge match that leveled a small town." I blinked remember Coulson saying something about a mission going awol, when something punched back much harder than we could.
"We learned that not only are we not alone, but we are hopelessly—hilariously out gunned."
"My people want nothing but peace with your planet."
"But you're not the only people out there are you? And you're not the only threat, the world is filling up with people who can't be matched." His gaze goes around the room though his look at me is not one I would give a nice word to.
"Who can't be controlled."
"Like you control the cube?"
"You're work with the Tesseract is what drew Loki to it and his allies, it is a statement to all realms that the Earth is ready for a higher form of war."
"A higher form?"
"You forced our hand we had to com—" I watch mute as Tony butts back in and the tension in the room makes me want to flee, another much more stubborn and reckless part remains even as the argument escalates.
"Remind me again how you made your fortune Stark?"
"I'm sure if he still made weapons we would be neck deep—"
"Wait, wait, wait, why is this now about me."
"I'm sorry isn't everything?" I wince as Steve and Tony begin to collide once again. Natasha has moved closer to Banner and Thor has moved near me...We're all waiting for someone to do something stupid.
"I thought humans were more evolved than this."
"Nope our evolution stopped the moment we created egos." I muttered.
"Excuse me, did we come to your planet and blow stuff up?"
It seems like things are getting heated.
Leave me alone! M y hand grips my arm as I try to keep myself from muttering out loud as the arguments all muddle together. A high pitched hum filled my ears and my gaze fell on the scepter which glowed brighter with every jab thrown and every angry retort given. My vision blurred and I felt dizzy as the inhuman voice filled my mind again.
What can they do but burn?
"You speak of control yet you cause chaos."
"What are we a team? No, no ,no we're a chemical mixture that makes chaos. We're—we're a time bomb." He was right all we had done since being shoved together was create more problems then we fixed.
"You need to step away—"
"Why shouldn't the guy let off a little steam?"
"You know damn well why, back off." I huffed grabbing Steve's arm.
"Okay maybe all of us need to take a chill pill." He pulled out of my grip as Tony fanned the flames.
"Oh I'm starting to want you to make me." Both circled each other hardened gaze never leaving the other.
"Big man in a suit of armor, take that off what are you?" I huffed annoyed that two grown ass men were arguing when the world was in the balance.
"Genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist."
"I know guys that are worth ten of you. I've seen the footage the only thing you really fight for is yourself." Now the gut punches were being thrown.
"You're not the kinda guy to make the sacrifices play to lay down on the wire and let the other guy crawl over you—"
"I think I would just cut the wire."
"Always a way out. You know you may be a threat, you better start pretending to be a hero." I backed up nearly knocking into Thor as the room swirled with anger.
I never realized how fun this would be—
I clamped my eyes shut just trying to ignore the fight, Loki's taunting in my mind, and the hum of that goddamn scepter.
"A hero? Like you? You're a laboratory experiment Rogers everything that is special about you came out of a bottle."
"Put on the suit let's go a few rounds." Thor chuckles and I resist the urge to punch someone.
"You people are so petty...and tiny."
"Yeah this is a team—"
"Agent Romanov could you escort Dr. Banner back to his—"
"Where? You rented my room."
"The cell was just—"
"Incase you needed to kill me but you can't I know I've tried." I blinked, Banner had never struck me as a guy who would rather end his life then endure it. But then again from what I had seen the Hulk wasn't a simple life change either.
"I got low...I didn't see an end so I put a bullet in my mouth and the other guy spit it out. So I moved on I focused on helping other people, I was good until you dragged me back into this freak show, and put everyone here at risk you wanna know my secret Agent Romanov? You wanna know how I stay calm? "
I watched in mute horror as Banner without even seeming to notice picked up the scepter how a small part of me wanted to be the one hold it...How my breath stopped waiting for him to kill us.
"Dr. Banner...put down the scepter." A light of realization lit his eyes and for a moment he hesitated to put the thing back. But the computer beeped and suddenly his attention was back.
"Sorry kids you don't get to see my party trick after all." I let out a soft breath through my nose, as activity swirled again...God this almost made me miss my one cell room somewhere underground.
I would get down if I were you— I cried out this time the pain too much as I crumpled to the ground.
"Oh my God—" The ship rocked with an explosion the exhaust launching me into a wall where my head cracked against solid steel. And my vision faded to black.
