It just seems easier to write for Helena when hell's breaking loose. lol
Trust in the Unexpected (by Emily Dickinson)
Irene walked back and forth in her office after leaving Myka. She had a feeling when Helena wasn't anywhere to be found, that she may have decided to take matters into her own hands. And if she did, Irene worried; she might be at Ted Grayson's office. "All my fault," Irene said, hand on her hip and the other gripping her forehead. Between her speaking to Ted, and Eileen speaking to Sam, Irene worried it was too much for Helena. She decided they had to tell Myka. She called Eileen and explained what she thought might be going on and then the two of them went to inform Myka. Irene explained how she thought her meeting with Ted would quell his insatiable curiosity and that she intended to tell Helena everything, but that someone sent her a picture.
"Did she seem upset?" Myka asked, furious at the man for upsetting her wife.
"No, she didn't, which is why I didn't think she would go there. If she went there," Irene said, guilt-ridden.
"Did you tell her about Sam?" Myka asked Eileen, thinking both stories were enough to push Helena over the edge.
"I did, and even then, she didn't seem angry or upset," Eileen confirmed.
"Myka, this is my fault," Irene said and Eileen immediately jumped on the guilt wagon and added, "Mine, too. I should never have gone…."
"No, no it's okay," Myka said, trying to make them feel better. "It's those idiots!"
"Wait!" Eileen said, snapping her fingers. "If Helena went there, she might have told Claudia." It was an easy assumption that Helena would take every precaution and would want cameras shut down or doorways unlocked. "I'll go check," Eileen said, rushing off to the techie's office.
"I am sorry, Myka," Irene said. "I should have known talking to that man would infuriate her."
"Irene, I'm sure Helena appreciates that you would go to such lengths for her, as I do that Eileen would go all the way there to talk to Sam. The problem is these are two very thickheaded men!" Anger rose up in Myka's torso and she grabbed her arms to steady herself.
Just then, Millie burst through the door. "I'm sorry, Ms. Bering," she said, rushing in. "Put the news on," she instructed, taking the remote herself and clicking the buttons to put on the television.
Instantly, the local newscaster appeared on the screen.
"There you have it. The EMTs are taking Ted Grayson to the hospital to be checked. His secretary said he was just ending a meeting with Helena Wells when …..," and she looked down at her notepad to quote the woman correctly, " …..he collapsed on the floor. Ms. Wells caught him, assessed the situation and administered what the secretary thought was CPR. Everyone here is attributing Helena Wells' quick actions with saving Ted Grayson today. Back to you in the studio."
Millie shut the television off and looked at Myka – who was looking at Irene. No one said a word. Then, Myka's phone beeped and it was a text from Pete, saying Helena wanted to see both of them in her office.
"We ought to get her a cape," Millie said as they walked out of the office.
Irene and Myka went up to Helena's office and waited. "Myka, remember, she wouldn't have done this if I hadn't gone to Ted."
"Thank you, Irene," Myka said, knowing the woman was taking the blame.
Myka paced the floor, worried what Helena had done. Did she go there yelling and cause the man to have a heart attack or did she threaten him and cause a panic attack? Myka had worried that Helena might react even more vehemently after the honeymoon.
Pete noticed that the air of confidence Helena had as she came out of the Grayson meeting was slowly disappearing as she returned to face her wife and friend. He drove her to the back entrance of the building.
"I don't know if it matters, Boss," Pete said as they went inside, "…but I thought you were great."
Helena looked over at the sincerity written on Pete's face. "It means a great deal, Mr. Lattimer," she said.
Helena rode up in her private elevator trying to decide which emotion would lace her speech. Counting on Myka to be disappointed and Irene to be upset, she decided she needed both barrels loaded. And she was going to get it off her chest before making eye contact with either one of them.
"Bollocks!" she said to herself on the ride up. "I run this damn company. I know what the hell I am doing!" The monologue fired her up and she marched past the colorful mats in her apartment without even looking down. She whipped opened the door to find Myka and Irene standing there.
"I know what you're both going to say!" Helena said as she walked in the room, her hand up in defense. "I didn't have to do this. There were other ways to handle this." Helena ranted as the two women just stood there. Helena continued as she threw her pocketbook down, pulled off her coat, discarding both in haste. Then she walked to the other side of her desk to put distance between her and the others.
"Why did you go? Why did you bait him like that? Did you have to slap him? How hard did his head hit the floor when you dropped him on purpose? How hard did you punch him? " Helena ranted and then realized neither of them had any of those details.
She looked up to see both women motionless and wide-eyed.
"I know what the hell I am doing! I am Helena Wells for God's sake. I do not back down from people who think they can take what is mine, disparage what is mine or think they can get something over what is mine. No one does anything to either of you! I – will – not – stand – for – it!" Helena said, revved up and yelling. She was filled with the fury she had contained at Ted Grayson's.
"I protect what is mine!" she said, slamming her fists on her desk. She drew in a deep breath, ready to take whatever her wife and dearest friend had to say, but they were both stunned into silence.
Irene had planned on apologizing to Helena as soon as she got there, but didn't dare interrupt her. She stood there and glanced over at Myka. Myka – well, Myka….. simply put – was never more in love with her wife. This was Helena being fierce out of concern and love and Myka never felt safer in her life.
Or more turned on.
She rushed at Helena who tried to recoil, but Myka was too quick. She reached out, placed her hands on Helena's jaw, and pulled her closer. She kissed Helena so hard that the Brit forgot to breath.
This was not what Helena was expecting.
Irene cast her gaze down, smiled, but didn't move.
"Oh," Helena said when Myka finally let go of her. Helena ran her tongue over the length of her lips in an attempt to quench the fire that she was certain the kiss ignited. Myka's eyes were pools of lust and adoration.
"Should I…?" Irene said and received both answers. She was surprised that it was Helena who said no.
Myka finally realized where she was again. "No, stay. We ….. we saw the news," she said, collecting herself and joining Helena on the couch. Irene sat in a chair closest to Helena.
"I wanted to tell you both what happened. The news only reported what I wanted it to look like," Helena explained.
"Oh dear," Irene said, worried about the way Helena reacted. "Was he surprised to see you?"
"He was …floored," Helena said and then caught her own chuckle. "Yes, he was."
"Helena….," Irene said, but Helena cut her off. She was so expecting Irene to lecture her that she kept jumping the gun.
"I will not allow anyone to say a critical word about you – except me of course, and that is that!" Helena said, melting Irene's heart.
"I wanted to apologize," Irene said softly. Helena was so surprised that she looked at Myka for confirmation.
"Did you go on medication while I was away?" Helena asked, suspiciously.
Irene stood up and Helena shot up as well. She was so on edge that she was interpreting any movement as aggressive. Irene reached over and pulled her into a hug. Helena's body remained stiff, unsure of what was going on.
"I am sorry if I got you into this, Helena, but thank you for defending me," Irene said, still remorseful. She released Helena and walked out of the office.
"What is wrong with her?" Helena said, uncertain of the response she was not anticipating.
"Apparently, Irene appreciates you defending her honor almost as much as I do," Myka said, standing next to Helena now.
"Yes?" Helena asked, as Myka pulled her closer.
"Very much," Myka said, kissing Helena again. "You didn't get hurt, did you?" Myka asked, pushing back and looking at Helena up and down.
"No, I was very reasonable – until the end," Helena said.
"Well, it sounds like you taught that man a lesson," Myka commented. "I know about Eileen going to DC to see Sam."
"Yes, it would seem all hell broke loose while we were away. Mr. Generis changed his race, Irene dined with Ted, Miss Sullivan went to speak to Sam," Helena said. "We can't leave them alone for too long it would seem," Helena said, looking at the door.
"Did it help to go to Ted Grayson's?" Myka asked.
"I hope so. He's just a nuisance. But he spoke ill of Irene and I will not…," Helena said, getting all riled up again.
Myka was right there to pull her in. "I know, Helena. I know," she said, because protecting her loved ones was at Helena's very core. It always had been.
"I'm going to visit Mr. Martino," Helena said and her expression was severe.
"I wish you wouldn't," Myka said, pulling Helena to sit down.
"Myka, if I do not make it clear to him…," Helena started to say, but Myka took her hands.
"Helena, you and I both know that Sam can't do anything to us. Ted Grayson probably took advantage of him after he humiliated himself in the press. If anyone could get through to him, it would be Eileen. I think she got in touch with her Wellsian genes when she did that," Myka smiled.
"I have a meeting in Washington tomorrow," Helena said, and she meant she could make time to see Sam.
"I won't stop you, of course," Myka said. "Let's talk about it over dinner." With that, Myka kissed Helena again and said she would be back later for the Directors meeting and left.
Helena looked around her office. That had gone much better than she had anticipated. Myka seemed okay with how she handled the situation. In fact, Myka seemed better than okay. She wasn't even telling her not to go to DC. Irene was apologetic and calm. There was no lecture or diatribe from the woman as Helena had anticipated.
Helena should have felt good, but she didn't. In fact, she was feeling very bothered. She understood Myka's response. She appreciated that Myka was allowing her to make the decision to see Sam or not. Myka trusted her. Irene, too, seemed to appreciate what Helena had done. She even tried to take responsibility for the situation and apologized to Helena.
Helena finally figured out what was gnawing at her. She marched to the elevator and went down to the 16th floor and made her way to Irene's office. She walked too quickly past Sandy to be announced and opened the door to Irene's office.
The HR Director had returned moments before feeling like the world was back on its axis. Helena had returned and with her came the overabundance of drama, chaos, and surprises. Irene sat at her desk a happy woman.
Now, minutes later, the door to her office flew open and Helena stood there.
"What the bloody hell is wrong with you?" Helena yelled and slammed the door behind her.
