ASHLEY'S P.O.V
"ASHLEY?"
When I look up Kyla's rushing over.
"She's going to be alright..."
Did I hear that right?
"What?"
"Spencer's out of surgery..."
I've never felt as relieved as I do right now.
"I..."
I don't know what to say.
"She's pretty banged up but she's going to be alright..."
I want to scream and jump around like an idiot.
But I don't have the energy.
"We should go back inside..."
When she starts walking I quickly follow her.
I've spent the last couple of hours trying to convince myself that she'd be alright.
But now I know she is.
I can't wipe the smile off my face.
"Where's Zara?"
She's the only one not here.
"They're putting stiches in her eye..."
Maggie's been trying to get Zara's eye looked at the whole time we've been sitting here.
But she wouldn't go.
She wanted to be here when the doctor came for Spencer.
"When did Glen and Michelle get here?"
"Not long after you went outside..."
The three of them are all sitting on the opposite side of the room to Maggie.
"Ky how hurt is she?"
"We're still waiting to hear..."
I really hate this whole waiting thing.
"The nurse said she was in recovery but we're waiting on her doctor to tell us more..."
"Are you alright honey?"
I'll be a lot better when I see Spencer.
"Yer"
"Come here..."
I barely know Maggie.
So when she stands up and pulls me in for a hug I'm a little surprised.
"Spencer's a lucky girl..."
"Thanks Maggie"
When I pull back she's smiling.
"When can we see her?"
"I'm not sure honey..."
I just want to see her.
"Is Zara's eye alright?"
"Yer she's just having a few of stitches put in..."
A few stiches is not a bad result considering.
"She should be back any minute now..."
"That's good"
When I finally sit down I lay my head down in my hands.
This has been a really crazy couple of hours.
"Has the doctor been out yet?"
We've all been sitting here quietly for a while now.
I don't think anyone knows what to say.
So when Zara walks back into the waiting room we all look at her.
"Hey..."
"Hey"
"Are you alright?"
"Zara shouldn't I be asking you that?"
She was the other person in the car.
"Do you mind if I sit?"
"Of course not..."
I lean back in my seat as she moves so she's sitting next to me.
"So we were driving to the shops and she had the biggest grin on her face..."
I turn my head so I'm looking at her.
"Ashley I'm pretty sure I don't need to tell you why she was so happy?"
Now I'm smiling.
"Ash you're the best thing that's happened to Spencer in a really long time..."
That's sweet.
"And in one month you've managed to help her more than I have in six years..."
I find that hard to believe.
Zara's Spencer's rock.
"Anyway I just thought you should know that when that car hit us she was the happiest she's ever been..."
I don't know what to say.
"And it's all because of you"
"Thanks Zara..."
I force a smile.
"So how are you feeling?"
"I have a headache but it's nothing compared to what Spencer's going through..."
"SPENCER CARLIN?"
When we hear her the doctor say her name we both jump up.
"Yer?"
"Hi I'm Dr Mitchell a surgeon here at Ronald Regan..."
"Hi"
I watch Zara as she shakes his hand.
"Are you Zara West?"
"Yer..."
"Spencer has you listed as her next of kin?"
When he says that I look over at Paula.
"Yer..."
"Did you want to go somewhere more private so I can explain her injuries?"
"No here's fine..."
"Okay..."
I'm really hoping her injuries aren't too bad.
"Well the good news is that she's now in recovery and where confident she shouldn't have any further complications..."
That's a relief.
"And the bad news?"
"She was in a pretty bad way when she got here, she had several lacerations on her face and down her arms..."
I'm still waiting to wake up and discover this is all a dream.
"The paramedics who treated her at the scene were worried she'd fractured her ribs and we could see that she'd broken her left clavicle..."
I never really listened in High School.
But I'm pretty sure your clavicle's your collar bone.
"So when she arrived we immediately sent her for scans..."
Why is this happening?
"The impact to her left side was quite severe and after assessing all her scans we had no choice but to operate..."
"Is she going to be alright?"
"Yer she's going to be a pretty sore girl for a while, but we don't see any reason why she won't make a full recovery..."
"Why did you have to operate?"
That's what I was wondering.
"When we got her scans back they showed that her ribs were pressing up against her lung..."
That doesn't sound very good.
"So we had to operate to relieve the pressure..."
That makes sense.
"We also inserted a metal rod in her shoulder that will help her shoulder heel quicker..."
"Can we see her?"
"Yer of course I'll have one of the nurses take you down..."
"Thanks"
