All of Me- Chapter 12
Alistair crouched down in a defensive pose and looked like he was one millisecond away from attacking us when Emmett and Rosalie each placed a restraining arm around his shoulders and began to whisper soothingly into his ear. From the way that he slowly relaxed I could tell that they were probably explaining the situation and that we were their family to Alistair. I took these few extra moments to look more closely at the reclusive vampire.
Even though his clothes could pass as modern looking there was a certain dated roughness about them that let me know that he did not get out into society enough to keep up on current fashion trends. His face was angular and the longer that I stared into those black eyes that were slowly returning to their natural burgundy color I could see a man who was so scared of being hurt that he had hidden himself away for however long just to avoid feeling the pain of his past. It reminded me of a look that I sometimes saw pass through Jasper's eyes when he thought no one was looking. Haunted by memories and people long dead and buried.
I tried to find the family resemblance between Jasper, Charlotte, and Alistair but besides the dirty blonde hair and angular features nothing was jumping out at me that these three were related. I trusted Peter with my life and soul, but I think that he might have gotten it wrong this time.
"Have a little more faith in me little bird." Peter whispered in my ear.
"How did you know what I was thinking?" I whispered back, still watching Rosalie and Emmett calm Alistair down enough for us to move forward and introduce ourselves.
"Bella never let Charlotte or Garrett trick you into playing poker because you would lose every game with the way that you wear your emotions on your face. I could tell that you were looking between the three for any resemblances, but with how many generations have passed between him and our dear Jasper and Charlotte physical appearances are bound to have changed a little along the way," Peter told me with a kiss to my forehead.
I just looked at him with a small smile because even in the most stressful of situations Peter was always calm and collected. I can see why he was fated to be our mate because he balances all of us. Once Alistair stood from his attack stance Jasper must have taken that as a cue that it was okay to move forward, of course he could have just felt Alistair's emotions to know that there was no danger as well. Who knows with the Major?
"I apologize for my earlier demeanor. I understand now that you mean neither me nor my mates any harm." Alistair said with a deep English accent that like Maggie's took some time for me to understand all of the quick words.
"No problem. I completely understand the desire to protect the ones who mean the most to you and I would have reacted the same way if it had been me. I'm Jasper Whitlock and these are my mates Peter, Garrett, and Bella; and I know that you have already made acquaintances with my blood niece Charlotte Whitlock and her mate Maggie of the Irish Coven." Jasper pointed to each of us as he made the introductions, but I could tell that Alistair was taken aback when the name Whitlock was mentioned not only once, but twice.
"I am Alistair Whitlock." Alistair stated and when his last name was mentioned it caused Rosalie and Emmett to gasp in surprise. The rest of us were at least semi warned that there was a correlation between our Whitlock's and their new mate.
"What? How? I am confused again." Emmett stated looking between the Whitlock's with a pout that screamed frustration. It made me want to giggle because Emmett reminded me of a toddler sometimes with his over the top almost childlike reactions to things.
"I too am confused, but with the new development of finding my mates after so long I find I am willing to take a reluctant leap of faith and invite you all to my home where we will all have more privacy to discuss everything." Alistair stated before ushering our large group down a hidden path that I hadn't noticed until he pointed it out.
We all followed Alistair as vampire speed, well I just continued to hang onto Garrett, but it could not have been more that two minutes later when we came upon an old English manor, that while looking like it could do with a little updating was still a site to behold. I could easily imagine the English gentry of past being perfectly at home in this residence. I smiled a large smile because I felt like I had stepped back in time and was now a character in one of my favorite novels.
When we entered the manor the same feeling of time traveling continued as I looked at all of the priceless antiques that filled the rooms. What stories they could tell if they could talk? Alistair led us to a large room that was filled from floor to ceiling with books, but it was the large oak table stacked with parchments that museums would kill for that drew most of my attention. If I had to guess I would say that this was Alistair's version of an office. I was in awe and completely at ease for the first time since we had left the ranch back in Texas.
Alistair gestured for all of us to take a seat and before I could even be set down on the floor from Garrett's back I was been placed on Jasper's lap so that I was still protected. I could tell that even knowing that Rosalie and Emmett were now mated to Alistair and that they would never let any harm come to me, my mates were not going to take any chances with me and any potential danger. That was okay with me as I loved soaking up the love and comfort that Jasper was sending to me as I relaxed more into his marble form.
"Now that we are safe in my home I am curious as to how you came to find me. Usually my gift would alert me as soon as anyone is thinking about me or headed in my direction. You are the first vampires to ever get this close to my home without my knowledge since I was turned in the early twelfth century." Alistair asked and I gasped out loud at his age.
He was the oldest vampire that I had every met. I had thought that Carlisle was old at being transformed in the middle fifteenth century. Alistair was over three hundred years older. Wow.
"I'll answer that. It is because Emmett and Rosalie are your mates so your gift would not recognize them as threats and in fact be drawn towards their scents rather than alert your gift to run away from them. It is instinctual and since you have been unmated up until this moment and have lived a life in relative seclusion it is most likely that you did not recognize what was going on until your mates ran to meet you. We were also able to get close to you because of little bird over there. She is a shield and most likely has us all blocked to some degree that keeps us hidden from your gift once Emmett and Rosalie left us to find you." Peter told us and I was again in shock.
"What's a shield?" I asked because again I had no idea what Peter was going on about.
"A shield is a rare gift that allows you to block some vampire's gifts. Since you are still human it is not at full strength and that is why Jasper can still read your emotions and Maggie can still read if you are truthful or not. However, it is growing and with time and practice I am sure that you would be able to block them if you needed or wanted to even before your transformation. Edward could not read your thoughts because you knew on an instinctual level that you needed to protect yourself from him and you kept us hidden from Alistair because your mind knew that we needed to stay hidden until it was safe to move forward. I believe that your gift is one of the reasons that you are in danger little bird." Peter explained to me and I took a moment to try and process it all.
"Interesting, I have never encountered a shield before. I will have to be more vigilant now that I know such gifts could be used in locating me." Alistair stated while looking directly at me almost like he was trying to figure out if I was a threat to him or not. I tried to give him a smile, but I am pretty sure that it was more of a grimace than anything. He just raised his eyebrow in confusion at my humanness and turned to my mates once again.
"Okay before we go on any further I want to know if we are related or not? I mean how common is the name Whitlock in the vampire world?" Charlotte asked in her manic way that made me want to laugh. She was always so full of energy.
"Charlotte have I ever lied to you before Sweetheart, of course you're related to Mr. twelfth century over there. He is your great-great how ever many generations great-uncle. Am I mistaken Alistair?" Peter asked Alistair and it took a moment for him to respond, but when he did I had to strain just to catch the words that poured out of him in a soft, yet pained voice.
"I was born and raised during the time of Edward II, who could be considered one of the weakest Kings to have ever ruled. My father and older brother wanted and craved power more than anything and in their quest for that power cost me and my family everything. When it was discovered that my brother had been involved in a plot to overthrow members of the King's council in order for him and other allies with similar agendas to take their places, he was executed as a traitor to the crown. I had no political agendas, much to my father's displeasure, but I knew that since I was now the oldest son it was my duty to follow my father's orders. I would have just been as happy to spend the rest of my life in the forest with my falcons, taking care of my mother and younger sisters, but that was no longer an option.
One evening my father took me into town, where I was brought before a man with bright red eyes. He told me that my father had paid a heavy price for me to be granted this gift and before I could even ask him what he was he flew at me and bit me. During my transformation I vowed to whatever God existed that if I lived through this that I would never listen to my father again. When I awoke to my new life as a vampire I was alone in a room, but before I could even try to escape my father and his allies reappeared and I was overcome with bloodlust. I killed my father and every other human in the vicinity. I was a monster, but even that knowledge did not stop me from going back to the only home that I had known. I discovered upon my return that the price my fathered had paid for my transformation had been the lives of my mother and sisters, they had vanished. I was truly alone and my predatory instincts made it so even my beloved falcons no longer trusted or wanted to be around my company.
I knew that my father was no saint and he kept several mistresses in town. Even with me going into town just to feed I was not immune to catching the town gossip. When I discovered that my father had sired a bastard son that was now being treated like second hand citizen because of the death of my father, I knew that I had to rescue him. Oliver Whitlock four years old at the time was my half-brother, his mother had died of consumption two months after I had killed my father in my rage and he was now an orphan just like me. I brought him back to the manor and raised him like he was my own son. He knew that I was different, but that I would never bring harm to him. When he grew into a man I allowed him to leave the nest so they say and make his own life with a wife and children. As each generation grew and then passed on I continued to watch over them in my own way. I missed being part of their world, but knew that is was better if I kept my distance. When the New World was discovered I knew that it would not be long until the ones I loved left to discover the new land for themselves. In 1638 Thomas and Ann Whitlock boarded a ship bound for Virginia; and that was the last I heard of my half-brother's family until now. I am guessing that you two are the descendants of Thomas. I cannot tell you how happy it makes me to know that I am no longer alone and that even after all of this time the Whitlock name still lives on." Alistair finished the story and I could tell by the way his body was hunched over that it had been a long time, if ever, that he had told his history to anyone and I considered myself lucky that I got to witness it.
Emmett and Rosalie had him gathered in their arms within seconds of seeing his pain and I turned into Jasper's chest to try and control my own emotions and give them some semblance of privacy. Jasper was running his hand along my back and when I looked into his golden eyes I was overwhelmed with gratitude that he was here and that if it hadn't been for Alistair saving his half-brother from the streets then Jasper and Charlotte would not exist and a world without him or my new niece was not something that I ever wanted to think about or experience.
I was taken aback when Charlotte cautiously approached Alistair and gave him an awkward hug. I was sat on my feet as Jasper followed his niece's moves and hugged his long lost uncle. I was practically bawling at the site and was grateful when Garrett and Peter gathered me into their arms and just held me as we observed the touching scene in front of us.
Once everyone had calmed down I knew that it was time to get down to the original reason that we had searched out Alistair. Alice's warning was still hanging over our heads just waiting to explode.
"Well now that we got that out of the way, Alistair are you willing to help us with our little problem?" Garrett asked our new friend hopefully.
"Of course, with my mates' members of your family it would be my honor to assist in any way that I can to keep any harm from falling on them and by extension you as well." Alistair stated.
"Thank you Alistair, we really appreciate it." Jasper told his great-uncle.
"Rosalie said that there was letter that contained a warning. May I see the letter?" Alistair asked and Peter immediately handed over the locket with the letter safely hidden inside.
"Since this letter was written so long ago and by a human I will need a small sample of the letter for my gift to work, do you mind if I tear a small part of the corner off?" Alistair asked and now I was really intrigued as to his power worked exactly.
We shook our heads that we didn't mind and watched as he torn a small piece of the paper and then crumpled it into a small ball.
"I have never shown anyone how this part of my gift works exactly. Carlisle knows some, but I have never performed what I am about to show you to him. If word got out how powerful I am it would only lead to trouble. That is part of the reason that I have kept myself hidden for so long, to keep my power from falling into the wrong hands. If you will please follow me?" Alistair motioned us over towards a side room that held a large table; and on that table was a map of the world.
"As I stated before when I was human I lived for my falcons and the hunt. Now I am tracker of a different sort. I use my skills to evade from being found, but it is just as easy to do the opposite. I needed the piece of paper because within it resides the essence of the person who wrote it and from that I can find who she was talking about, even if she didn't know them herself. I don't always need something of the person I am looking for to perform this task; I can do this with anything, but having something direct from the source is always beneficial. This map will show us where to go. Just watch." Alistair stated as he held the rolled up piece of paper for all of us to see.
We all gasped as the paper began to twist and turn in his hand, but what had us all jumping back was when the paper sprouted wings and a body. A tiny fully formed paper falcon was now resting in Alistair's hand waiting for orders from its master. When Alistair lifted his hand into the air the paper falcon took off and flew over the map, searching over the different landscapes.
It was the strangest thing that I had ever seen, and that was saying something because I had seen some pretty weird shit in recent months. When it began to fly over South America the paper falcon let out a fierce call and began to circle over Chile and Argentina. It landed with all the eloquent grace of a real falcon right along the border of the two countries.
"Whoever we are looking for is located in the forests of the Araucania Region of Chile. Once we get into the country I will be able to use the falcon again to get an exact location, but for now this is as close as I can get." Alistair stated and we all looked at him in complete awe.
Well shit it looks like we are headed back to the airport and another long plane ride, only this time we are headed into the unknown wilderness of Chile. Well one good thing with all this traveling is that I certainly will be building up the frequent flyer miles, I thought to myself sarcastically.
So what did you think of Alistair and his relation to Jasper and Charlotte? Thomas and Ann Whitlock were real people who landed in Virginia in 1638 and Whitlock is a last name that has been in England since ancient times. So for this story it works that they are all realated.
What about Alistair's gift? Did you like it? SM never really said how it workd exactly for I made it my own. It will be seen more in the coming chapters, and I am sure that many of you will guess now who Carlisle was looking for and why? Right, well if not I would still love to hear your theories?
Who is in Chile?
Does it have anything to do with who Alice and Edward are looking for?
All good questions and I promise that answers will come, but in the mean time I would to read what you think is going to happen.
PLEASE REVIEW!
See you all next time with Chapter 13!
Love Always, BriyerRose
