Wings

Caroline laid on the bed as they pressed the Doppler to pick up any sign of their baby on the screen, A smile from the midwife and reassuring words made the knots in her stomach untie

"Everything Seems fine. Baby is 6 weeks 3 days, A few weeks less than you'd thought but can you see it's heart beating?" She asked as she pointed her finger to the black and white screen, a tiny little dot thumping rapidly eased her fear.

"Everything is ok" she thought.

Wiping the jelly from her stomach she stood watching as the nurse took a seat at her desk writing notes on pieces of paper

"So what do I do if the bleeding continues?" Caroline questioned unsure of what should happen next.

"If bleeding gets worse come straight back and we will check on the progress of the pregnancy" Caroline nodded whispering her goodbyes as she walked through the door.

Her lips raised into a smile at the thought her baby was fighting to survive although the odds were stacked against it.

Women sat in the waiting room with their partners holding their hands or gently rubbing there rounded stomach but Caroline gently rested her hand on her abdomen feeling more alone than she had the last few weeks.

Klaus had been working so hard with the new deal he was set to close on one of his art pieces; She hadn't even told him about the bleeding due to his busy schedule and Cami constantly telling her that he wasn't in the office but something about the urge to explain everything was stronger than the urge to return home and lay on the couch.

Arriving at the gallery she walked straight through without a second glance at the security or the woman standing behind the reception desk speaking on the telephone.

Her eyes drifted through the room admiring all his latest work. "Klaus?" She called loudly earning snickers from other patrons admiring his work

"Klaus where are you?" She whispered still earning glares from everybody.

"Caroline. Do you mind! The Gallery is supposed to be in utter silence so people can admire his work" Cami came towards her secretly stabbing Caroline in the head because everybody knew she hated her

"Where is he then? It's important that I speak to him" Cami groaned frustrated

"He is busy painting at the moment can it not wait until he gets home?" Caroline's mouth fell in shock

"Excuse me? You do not tell me when I can speak to my husband. I don't need my name written in your stupid diary to schedule time with my own husband"

"Shhh!" Caroline turned to find a snobby woman shushing her

"Oh shut it" she groaned as she strutted towards Klaus' studio

"Klaus?" She called out slowly opening the door

"Hello Love, What do I owe the pleasure" Klaus always looked beautiful in his worn out shirt covered in paint as his brush stroked the canvas

"I was hoping we could talk, It's really important" Klaus nodded resting the paint brush on the side before walking towards his wife laying a chaste kiss on her lips and gently brushing a strand of hair from her cheek away.

"Mr Mikaelson, Your two O'clock is here?" Cami said from the door holding her diary in her hands

"Tell them I am running late that if they can't wait to reschedule" Cami nodded as she closed the door behind her leaving the couple alone.

"What's so important love?" He questioned as he sat beside Caroline on his small couch

"I've been bleeding" She whispered

"Are you okay? Is the baby alright?" He responded quickly the fear evident in his eyes.

"Bonnie rushed me to hospital. They did an ultrasound and our baby is 6 weeks and 3 days old" She chuckled gently reaching for his free hand and resting it against her stomach

"Our little sweetheart is clinging on for dear life" she whispered as she rested her head on his shoulder

"I am just so please you are both okay." he breathed resting his head gently on her shoulder letting his hand roam her abdomen

"I feel like this is the one - it's going to be a girl" Klaus lifted his head to look at her, the smile that made her skin radiate as she spoke so sure of the sex of their soon to be newest addition.

Two boys already following in the Mikaelson men foot steps, They had Henry who'd inherited his name from his young Uncle Henrik who'd been just as excited as the soon to be parents.

When Henry William Mikaelson a small 6lbs and 4oz was placed in Caroline's arms five years previous, she'd been so certain his name would take on Henrik's and her deceased father Bill's name.

Then two years later Caroline went into premature labor with their second son in the middle of the Mystic Grill delivering him in their back room with only her two best friends present, She was lucky Bonnie was studying at med school.

They'd named him Niklaus Stefan Mikaelson weighing in at 5lbs exactly; He'd been named after Klaus because Caroline didn't want him being left out but He'd made sure that he was addressed as Nik.

"Let's wait Love. I don't want you too be disappointed if it's another boy" she nodded in agreement although she never admitted it to anybody but Klaus, she was upset that Nik hadn't been the little girl she'd dream of but she loved him just as well and both their boys were her world.

That evening Caroline walked in to find Esther sat on the couch reading with her two young grandsons listening in as they pointed out what they could see on each page "Denosarous" Nik called as he pointed to the page earning a small chuckle from Esther

"No. Nik. It's a Dinosaur" Henry corrected him.

"Evening. I'm back" Caroline said as she walked into the room

"Mommy" Henry called jumping from Esther's knee and running to Caroline

"Hey sweetheart. You been good for Nanna?" Henry nodded his head vigorously

"I helped Nanna bake cookies then I went to the store with Kol and Henrik so I could choose sweeties for me and Nik" Caroline smiled at her precious son as he replayed his day to her.

"Why don't you boys go and find grandpa and see if he'll read the last few pages with you?" Henry turned to Esther smiling as she handed him the book, he walked towards his brother holding out his hand

"Come on Nik, Grandpa will finish the story" Nik wriggled from the couch grabbing his small blanket taking Henry's hand as they walked towards Mikael's office.

"How did it go?" Caroline smiled brightly

"It was okay. She showed me the heartbeat, It's only 6 weeks and 3 days but seeing it's heartbeat is a positive sign that this bleeding might pass" Esther sat back on the couch patting the space beside her for Caroline to sit

"Has the bleeding subsided or is it still continuous?"

"It's still continuous but an internal ultrasound will cause bleeding won't it? It's no longer pale it turned slightly darker this afternoon after the ultrasound." Esther was worried for her son and daughter in law but still smiled as she reassured Caroline things might still be okay.

While the ladies sat talking Mikael came in holding not one but two giggling little boys in his arms "No grandpa, put us down" Henry giggled as he tried wriggling from Mikaels grip

"Are you sure you want to get down?" He smiled adoringly to his grandson watching as he beamed with a bright smile.

Mikael walked his grandson towards Esther dropping him onto her lap before taking a seat in his arm chair holding Nik still in his arms "I think this little monster is tired" He said to Caroline as his eyes watched the small figure resting against his chest slowly let his eyes droop

"Leave the boys here tonight, You and Niklaus could do with a night off. Get some proper rest" At first Caroline was unsure if she wanted to leave the boys but with everything going on and she and Klaus needed to really sit down and talk

"Are you sure it's okay?" She questioned them both

"Yes sweetie. It is fine, Go rest and tomorrow we will have a family dinner."

Caroline nodded reluctantly letting her boys stay the night at their grandparents.

Standing up she walked towards Mikael gently laying a soft kiss on Nik's cheek as she stroked his hair the way he liked it when she was settling him, Turning to Henry she chuckled watching as he began to take of his shirt

"You be a good boy for Nanna and Grandpa." He nodded as he handed his shirt to his Nan and leaning up to kiss his mother goodbye

"Love you Mommy" He grinned as she left them too it "Love you boys and I'll see everybody tomorrow"

Arriving home Caroline was shocked to find Klaus' car on the drive; Usually he arrived home late because of an over ran meeting with a client or he was too engrossed in his work.

Walking through the door Caroline's nose was hit with a delicious smelling aroma "Klaus?" She called out in search of her husband as she walked further into their home

"Where are you?" She walked into the kitchen to find food cooking in the oven but no Klaus tending to it.

Walking up the stairs she noticed their bedroom door open slowly creeping towards it she pushed it, frightened of what she might find behind the door; Would another woman be in their bed? Had he really had enough of her?

As the door swung open she breathed a breath of fresh air; Their bed was as she'd made it that morning but her dressing gown and favorite pyjama set were laid out on the bed.

"Hello Love" Caroline's eyes darted to their en-suite bathroom spotting Klaus leaning against the door a bright loving smile across his lips

"I've made you a bath and pulled out your favorite nightwear. Mum called to let me know that they had the boys tonight so I thought I'd come home early and treat my beautiful wife" Caroline walked towards him wrapping her arms around his neck smiling as she laid soft kisses against his cheek

"Thank you Baby. A night in watching movies with my Hubby while our boys are at their grandparents. Maybe even a full night sleep" Klaus chuckled

"An early night it is then" Pulling Caroline into the bathroom, He watched as her eyes glistened at the sight before her.

He'd not only filled their bath with bubbles, He'd also placed candles around the room and turned on the interchanging lights in their bathroom to give her relaxation "it's beautiful" she whispered leaning into him more

"You have your bath and I'll serve dinner" Klaus kissed her cheek leaving her alone in the bathroom.

Once Caroline had finished in the bath she came into the dinning room dressed in her comfy pajamas and fluffy dressing gown the boys had brought her for Christmas.

"This all looks delicious" her eyes looked at the meal set out in front of her it was only spaghetti Bolognese but it was one of Klaus' best dishes and it was the meal he'd made her on their first date.

Taking the seat beside her husband she began eating small mouthfuls at a time gradually feeling full up quickly

"What's the matter love?" He questioned her as she laid with her food

"I'm not hungry now, I don't know what's going on" Klaus chuckled lightly

"Those hormones again? You couldn't eat while you were pregnant with Nik remember" Caroline smiled at the memory of her previous pregnancy, she'd not been able to stomach food unless it was Pringles and cookies.

"I guess so. I'm already tired. How about we watch the movie in bed?" Klaus pulled the DVD out from behind his back as he stepped towards Caroline helping her from the chair and carrying her into their bedroom.

"You had it all planned didn't you? Whisk me off to bed and-"

"wrap you in my arms and get plenty of minus two noisy alarm clock sleep" Klaus grinned as he rested her on the bed.

"Thank you for taking care of me" she praised as he went to put the DVD in the player.

"In sickness and in health, I promised you" he whispered softly walking to get into bed.

Two days and nothing, Still bleeding and her fear.

She'd tried to eat but all she could stomach were small mouthfuls.

Klaus had taken the boys to the park so she could get some well deserved rest and finish an article she was supposed to write for the paper.

Settling up at the desk she felt the excitement that came while carrying a child, what sex her child would be if she'd take on Klaus's features or her own.

She had wanted another baby ever since Nik was born but it never happened and now she was carrying this tiny little bean with a heartbeat causing her own heart to swell.

The ringing of the phone startled her, she looked at the caller id smiling "Hey Bon-Bon." Caroline smiled at Bonnie's reply

"How you feeling now Care?"

"Everything seems normal, Still bleeding though" Bonnie breathed deeply through the phone

"What you up to now?" Caroline didn't have time to answer as a sudden wave of cramps took her dashing to the toilet.

It all happened so quickly, the pain, the blood, the heartbreak.

When Klaus arrived home he was stunned at how quiet the house was, Caroline wasn't in her study or the living room.

He turned to the boys a soft smile still on his lips "Go to your rooms and get ready for bed, Henry help Nik brush his teeth I'll be in in a moment." the boys nodded running up the stairs to their bedrooms,

Klaus' eyes caught sight of the patio door open and a figure leaning against one of the pillars.

As he came closer he noticed the blond mess of hair "Sweetheart-" Within seconds Caroline flung herself into his arms sobbing uncontrollable

"What's the matter?" She couldn't talk, she just cried as he stroked her hair.

"Is it the baby?" He questioned lifting her head to face him

"There is no baby" she sobbed. The realisation hit him, their baby had gone. Tears filled his own eyes as he looked into hers

"I'm so sorry sweetheart"

Her closest friends called, their parent's tried to visit but anytime somebody came into the room to talk to her she'd politely smile and walk out.

She sat on the edge of the pool kicking her feet in the warm water "I thought I'd find you here" Caroline looked up to find Bonnie stepping closer towards her

"You found me" Caroline said.

Bonnie took a seat beside her sighing softly "I know that you are blaming yourself right now but Care it isn't your fault, it happens and we can't control it sometimes" Caroline groaned everybody had told her the same stupid line

"So everybody keeps saying but nobody understands!" Bonnie dug into her bag pulling a blurred image from an envelope

"This was our first miscarriage, I was nine weeks at this point. Two weeks later they found no heartbeat, Kol was destroyed but he threw himself into being an uncle to those two amazing boys you have right here. So don't say nobody understands because I do"

The first time in two weeks Caroline reacted to somebody other than Klaus, Her hand reached out gripping hold of Bonnie's

"I'm sorry Bonnie" Bonnie shock her head

"No. It wasn't your fault. I've learned to understand we may never have children of our own but we love each other enough to be stronger for one another" a small smile spread out on Caroline's lips.

"I know I should be grateful that I've got the boys but deep inside of me I'm devastated, I really thought it was a girl, that we were finally going to complete our family" Bonnie flung her arm around Caroline's shoulders pulling her towards her

"I know right now it hurts but you aren't alone and I'm sure when you are ready you'll try again and maybe next time you'll be lucky enough to get your little princess" Caroline nodded letting the tears fall from her eyes

"I'm not sure I want another baby Bon, It's devastating going through this pain and heart ache, I can't even put my boys to sleep at night because I'm too cut up about the baby. I just want the pain to stop" Bonnie stroked her best friends hair

"I know Care, I know. We'll get through it together" Bonnie watched as Kol came into view watching the girls offering him a small smile and mouthed I love you.

He'd been her rock through each of their miscarriages, Four times they'd unsuccessfully carried and every time their heart broke even more that they finally gave up hope.

Klaus stood behind the glass door watching as his wife who he'd loved and cherished since the day he met her broke down in her friends arms, He didn't know how to comfort her, He'd lost his baby too but he threw himself into caring for the boys and cancelling all her upcoming doctor appointments so she wouldn't have a surprise letter in the post about pregnancy.

His mother had told him it was a traumatic experience for any woman to go through and that if somebody else could get through to her before him, just encourage it and not feel disappointed that she couldn't speak to him.

Two weeks later Caroline stood at the stove making dinner while the boys sat up in their play room watching television and playing with their toys.

She felt guilty for locking them all out of her grieving, So she wanted to surprise them with a special meal to thank Klaus for giving her time and to let them all know that she loved them.

"I'm home" Klaus called as he unlocked the door, Two tiny sets of feet rushed towards him cheering

"Daddy" Henry sang as he rushing into Klaus' waiting arms

"There's my boys, You been good for mommy?" Henry nodded

"We've been really good well, Nik did make a big drawing on the wall in our toy room" Caroline came into view resting her hands on her hips

"Henry what happens to children who lie in our house?" Henry turned his head to the floor

"Sorry Mommy. I drawed on the wall daddy. I'm sorry please don't take Mr Giraffe" Klaus eyes Caroline a small smile on his face

"Well you best apologize to your brother for lying and you mustn't draw on the walls again, You don't want it messy for when your friends come and visit."

Henry shock his head "I'm sorry Nik" He said softly turning to his baby brother hugging him awkwardly.

"Well lets get you two set up at the dinning table shall we" Caroline beamed as Nik rush to her and wanted to be carried.

Walking into the dinning room Klaus was surprised to see the table set beautifully "You did all this?" Klaus asked her.

"Yes I did. I wanted to make you all something special for dinner, You've all been patient with me and I wanted to thank you" Klaus grinned as he sat up the table with his boys making sure they were seated properly, Caroline took the seat beside Nik cutting up his food to make it easier for him to eat.

"This is delicious love" Klaus said as he took a mouthful of food off his plate

"I'm glad you like it" Caroline smiled widely as she looked at her favorite men.

Later that night once Caroline and Klaus settled the boys in their beds they made a bath in their en suite

"I thought maybe we could use the candles and the lights and spend some time alone" Caroline grinned pulling Klaus towards her by his shirt

"Are you sure? I know you've been avoiding it" Caroline removed her hands from him and slowly lifted the dress she had on baring her body to him

"I'm sure, I want us to be us again, I want to make love to my husband again" Klaus smirked taking of his shirt and pulling her towards him wrapping his arms around her tightly

"I want nothing more than to make love to my beautiful wife" He quickly turned off the taps to the bath before lifting her in his arms as he carried her back to their bed ravishing her all night the start of their healing process.

Little did they know that night they'd create a memory that would last a life time, Their little girl.

Loosing a baby is traumatic to anybody whether you had a chance to hold them or they never got the chance to open their eyes.

What Makes a Mother

By Jennifer Wasik

Written with love for all the Mother's missing their babies

I thought of you and closed my eyes
and prayed to God today
I asked, "what makes a Mother"?
And I know I heard Him say,
A Mother has a baby,
This we know is true.
But, God, can you be a Mother
when your baby's not with you?

"Yes you can!", He replied
with confidence in His voice,
"I give many women babies,
when they leave is not their choice.
Some I send for a lifetime
and other's for a day
And some I send to feel your womb
but there's no need to stay."

I just don't understand this God,
I want my baby here.

He took a breath,
and cleared His throat,
and then I saw a tear.
I wish I could show you
what your child is doing here.

If you could see your child smile
with other children and say,
"We go to earth to learn our lessons
of love and life and fear,
but My Mommy loved me oh so much
I got to come straight here!"
I feel so lucky to have a Mom who had so much love for me
I learned my lesson very quick
My Mommy set me free.
I miss my Mommy oh so much
but I visit her each day
When she goes to sleep
on her pillow's where I lay.

I stroke her hair and kiss her cheek
and whisper in her ear,
Mommy don't be sad today
I'm your baby and I'm here."

So you see my dear sweet one,
your children are okay
Your babies are here in My home
and this is where they'll stay.
They'll wait for you with Me
until your lesson is through.
And on that day that you come home
they'll be at the gates for you.

So now you see
what makes a Mother
It's the feeling in your heart
It's the love you had so much of
right from the very start.

Though some on earth may not realize
that you are a Mother until their time is done.
They'll be up here with me one day
and know you're the best one.
