A/N: Hey guys remember when I told you that there will be an emotional roller coaster? Here's the start of it, and please don't hurt me.
Gobber was in his work shop when he saw Spitelout walking by with clinched hands. He put down his hammer and called to the man who was stomping around the village. "Spitelout, how are you? You seem a bit…..irritated."
"Oh, irritated doesn't describe how I'm feeling." He growled crossing his arms and frowning at The Blacksmith. Gobber set his tools aside and walked out of The Forge to stand next to the fuming man.
"Do you want to talk about it? I can be your person to yell and vent at." Gobber said with a weak smile. Spitelout took a deep breath and nodded.
"Yeah, that actually sounds nice, but I can't tell you here."
~oOo~
When Stoick and Valka got home, Valka went back to their room and tried to go to sleep. Stoick stayed in the front room and sat in front of the fire pit trying to think. He stared at the dancing flames as he remembered the past four years. He remembered when he told Alvin and Sven about the engagement and how they laughed and said that Valka being the oldest maiden was impossible. He remembered how when he told his father about it, how he yelled at him and said that Alvin and Sven didn't know anything.
Then he remembered how his father threatened him and said to never tell anyone about that conversation because he didn't want people to think that he didn't trust his father and chief. He could have figured it out that day and asked Valka about it! But he didn't because he didn't want the people to think he didn't trust his own father. What kind of successor was he? He was too focused on training than his people; no wonder Alvin didn't think he could be a great chief.
If he could, he would go back and tell his younger self to be with his people. Even though they weren't the most pleasant people to be around, he would say to himself 'you have to lead these people; I know it seems like you have all the time in the world to know all of them, but trust me, you won't. I know it's important to train yourself for battles, but the people are just as important. Know that now, or 27 year old us is going to regret it once we find out the truth'.
Stoick's thoughts were interrupted when he heard a knock at the door. Stoick got up and opened the door to only find Gobber standing there.
"Spitelout just told me what happened, how are you and Valka handling it?"
Stoick sighed and let Gobber in. "Ah, Valka taking it the hardest, she's in our room trying to sleep the memory away."
"I can't seem to blame her. You had a secret betrothal and you guys had no idea that your fathers planned your marriage."
"Well, we knew our fathers talked about it, but not that they had planned it 10 years ago," Stoick said taking a seat by the fire pit. Gobber watched his friend hang his head down and kept on listening to him. "I feel like I took her life away, her ability to find love the proper way, and everything she had before she was ready." He said hiding his eyes in his palm.
"I don't think that's true." Gobber said making his friend lift his head up from his hand.
"What are you talking about Gobber?"
"I don't think you took everything away from her before she was ready. I mean, call me crazy but those three women already have one or two kids, and you are now just having yours. Either you guys were having a hard time having a kid for four years, or you waited until she was ready to give something up that was important to her."
Stoick stared at Gobber then looked back down at the floor. "I know you're trying to cheer me up, but it won't work. There is just too much information in one morning right now."
"I understand, but just like Spitelout, if you or Valka want to yell and vent at me, I'm here." Gobber said and saw Stoick give him a weak smile.
"Thanks Gobber, I think we might just do that."
~oOo~
It's been a month since Stoick and Gobber had that conversation. The young couple kept their feelings inside and tried to pretend that nothing happened. However, every time Stoick saw his father-in-law, he would glare at him and go about his business. While Valka tried to avoid him as much as possible. So she just stayed at home most of the day and only left the house if she had to eat at The Great Hall.
Meanwhile, Gobber noticed something that had been bothering him; he noticed Stoick went back to his old ways ever since they found out the secret betrothal. Late at night when everyone was asleep, Gobber would see Stoick leaving his house and going to the woods with every weapon he could carry.
Once night, Gobber waited for Stoick and followed him. He watched his friend swinging his sword, axe, and hammer at anything he could see moving. If there were no animals in sight from the moonlight, he would start hitting the trees.
Gobber watched his friend in silence until his peg leg stomped on a twig. Gobber ran to hide behind the closet tree, but was spotted when he saw the light of the moon hit the blade of the axe. Gobber screamed seeing the weapon coming towards him, but nothing happened. Then he heard Stoick shouting "Gobber, are you insane?! I could have killed you!"
"I'm insane!? You almost killed me!" Gobber shouted back seeing Stoick lower his weapon.
"What are you doing here?" Stoick asked as he laid his axe down by his hammer and sword.
"I should ask you the same question. You should be at home, in bed, with your wife. Who thinks you are lying down beside her, but you are out here hitting trees and almost killing your friends."
Stoick groaned and picked up his weapons. Gobber stepped in front of him trying to stop him from leaving.
"What are you doing Gobber?"
"I'm trying to stop you from hiding your feelings."
"Hiding my feelings? I'm not hiding my feelings; I just couldn't sleep so I came here to tire myself out."
"Every night for a month you've been having trouble sleeping? Either you need to see Gothi to get herbs to make you sleepy, or you're upset about what your father and Mr. Jorgenson did 10 years ago."
Stoick glared at Gobber and started to walk away, but stopped when he heard Gobber saying "ah-ha! That's it! You're angry with Mr. Jorgenson. Now can you tell me why you are out here?"
Stoick sighed and put down his weapons. He turned around to face his friend. "I'm out here because this is how I handle my feelings. I was never taught to speak about my feelings when it came to grief or furious anger."
"Grief? You were out here to handle grieving as well?"
"I don't want to talk about this."
"Stoick, when was the last time you were out here?"
Stoick sighed and looked down at the ground. He placed his fist on his hip and took a deep breath before speaking out. "The last time I did this was when my mother died. I would wake up and think she was downstairs, but then I would remember that we burned her body over the ocean. I didn't know how to handle my feelings, so I would come out here and hit trees and kill animals. People thought I only came out here for training, but that wasn't the whole truth. I came out here to get away from everyone, I was getting tired of people pitying me every time they saw me, and I hated seeing everyone with their mothers, so I came out here to exclude myself from everyone to handle my grief. By doing that I missed my people's lives and the only ones I hung out with was Alvin and Sven who found me out here pouring out my feelings by banging up trees."
"Stoick, I understand. You were an angry teenager who lost his mother. I understand why you would be out here, but you don't need these trees to pour out your anger to anymore. You have Valka and me now, and I'm pretty sure Valka needs you a lot more right now."
"You know what Gobber, you're right-"
"Aren't I always?"
Stoick rolled his eyes and continued. "Valka's been depressed and all I've done was go here when I was done chiefing. The only time I see her is when she's asleep, but that's when I come out here."
"Stoick, you need to think of something."
"You're not going to help me?"
"Nah, I think you should figure it out this time. You've been married to her for four years; you know what makes her happy. I don't think you need my help this time." Gobber said with a smile and walked away from his friend. Stoick watched his friend leaving the woods and thought of something that would help lift up Valka's spirts.
~oOo~
Valka woke up to an empty bed again. Then she saw a single yellow rose on her husband's pillow with a note. Valka rubbed her eyes and picked up the note.
Val, meet me by Raven Point once you finish reading this.
-Stoick
Valka pealed the blanket away from her body and got out of bed. She walked to her dresser and found the first outfit she saw. After she got dressed and fixed her hair in a braid, she walked into the woods to get to Raven Point and found her husband. She saw him standing in front of her with two little unlit candles by him. She cocked a brow at him and she only received a smile from him.
"Um, what are you doing?" she asked as she gestured to the candles. She waited for him to answer her, but she really didn't get one. What she heard come out of his mouth was something she hadn't heard in almost four years.
"I'll swim and sail on savage seas, with ne'er fear of drowning. And gladly ride the waves of life. If you will marry me."
Valka smiled and covered her mouth with her fingertips. She felt her smile getting bigger when she heard him sing more.
"No scorching sun, nor freezing cold will stop me on my journey. If you will promise me your heart…."
"And love me for eternity."
She couldn't remember the last time she smiled like this and walked over to him as she sang her part.
"My dearest one, my darling dear your might words astound me, but I've no need of mighty deeds when I feel your arms around me!"
The two of them both raised their arms and touched their forearms together and slid their arms down to grab each other's hand and hit the sides of their feet together as he sang.
"But I would bring you rings of gold, I'd even sing you poetry, and I would keep you from all harm! If you would stay beside me."
"I have no use for rings of gold, I care not for your poetry. I only want your hand to hold."
"I only want you near me!"
"To love and kiss, to sweetly hold. For the dancing and dreaming, through all life's sorrows and delights! I'll keep your love inside me! I'll swim and sail on savage seas! With ne'er a fear of drowning! And I'll gladly ride the waves of life if you will marry me!"
Valka laughed for the first time in a month. Stoick held his wife as he smiled hearing her muffled laughs in his chest. Stoick lifted her head up and kissed her on the forehead.
"I never thought I would feel like that again." She said feeling his lips leave her head.
"I guess you can say I had a wakeup call late last night." He said walking away from her and picked up two rocks to lite the candles. She watched him hit the rocks together and lite the wick of one candles. He put the unlit wick of the other candle by the fire and lit the other wick.
Valka watched him sit down as he placed the candles on a flat rock. She went ahead and sat down next to him. Once she was next to him, he pulled a yellow rose that he hid behind the rock. Valka smiled and took the second rose she got that day.
"Where are you getting these flowers from?" she asked as she brushed her fingertips on the petals.
"I can't tell you, you might try to find my secret hiding place." He said with a smile. Valka chuckled and kept looking at the flower.
"Why did you do this?" she finally asked. Stoick sighed and answered.
"We were both feeling bad all month. When you were asleep, I would be out here, in the woods hitting trees and sometimes kills animals for food-"
"That explains why we always had fresh meat in the house." She said making him chuckle and he continued.
"Anyway, Gobber found me last night and helped me realize that what I was doing wasn't helping me. So long story short, I thought remembering our first date might help us get out of our funk."
"Well, it worked. So are you ready to go home? The baby is making me feel horrible."
"Oh yeah, sure." Stoick got up and brushed his tunic from the dirt. Valka held out her hands and her husband grabbed them and helped her up from the dirt ground.
~oOo~
Ever since then, the two were a bit pleased with their life. Even though they were still resentful to Shoutlout, they were happier at home. That was until one night when everything made a horrible turn. In the middle of the night, Stoick was wakened to his wife hitting him and screaming in horror for him to get Gothi.
When he was more alert, he lit the oil lamp from their night stand and found a red stain on their blanket. Stoick pulled it way from their bed and found blood on Valka's nightgown and under her covered with crimson just below the hip. Without hesitation, Stoick rushed out of the bed and ran to Gothi's hut. Once he got to the hut, he banged on the door and yelled for her to get out.
The elderly woman packed up her things and followed her chief to his house. Once they entered the room where Valka laid, Gothi went to the foot of the bed and rolled up Valka's nightgown. While Gothi was examining her, Valka demanded her husband to get her mother and he followed her orders.
The Jorgensons woke up hearing Stoick banging on their door and calling out for his mother-in-law to come out. Mrs. Jorgenson got out of bed and opened the door to only find her chief in terror. She knew something was wrong and ran out of the house leaving everyone behind as she rushed to Stoick's home to find her daughter.
Stoick followed her but was kicked out of the house because they thought it would be best for him. Stoick paced outside of the house hearing his wife's screams and his mother-in-law trying to comfort her. After hours of waiting, he heard the door open and saw his mother-in-law, tears in her eyes, giving him news he thought he never had to hear. He watched her sit on the steps and covered her face with blood stain hands as she cried.
Stoick tried to take it all in before he walked back inside. He heard his wife's cries before he entered the room. He took a breath and walked in to find Gothi gathering her things and looking at her chief with sorrow. Then he looked to the bed to find his wife crying with something small and covered in blood in her hands.
Gothi patted her chief's arm before she walked out to leave the couple alone. Stoick kept staring at his wife pressing her forehead on her knees and she held the bloody body in her palm. Stoick slowly walked to her and finally saw her lift her head up. He saw his wife's face covered with tears and blood spots from what she held in her hands.
"He didn't make it, Stoick." She whimpered and cried harder as she held the body of her child to her face. He? They were going to have a son? Stoick walked to their window and felt a growing lump in his throat. He tried to swallow it away and sniffled trying not to cry.
Once he got enough strength, he walked to the bed and gently took the body out of her hands. He saw his son, almost as big as his palm, covered in blood, not showing any signs of life. Stoick felt a rush of emotion hit him seeing his tiny lifeless son in the palm of his hand.
Stoick gave his wife back their limp son and he walked out of the house. He saw his mother-in-law still sitting on the steps crying. Stoick placed a hand between her shoulder blades and saw her turn her head. Mrs. Jorgenson got up and stood in front of him. Stoick hung his head and without warning, he felt her wrapping her arms around him and they cried until there were no more tears to shed for the child they never got to meet.
