Gabby sat in the rocking chair, gently rocking back and forth as a single tear fell down her cheek as she looked down at the tiny white onsie in her hand. The front door to the apartment slowly creeped open now, but Gabby sat silent listening to the soft taps of shoes move through the apartment." Gabby?" She finally hears Matt call out to her as she watches their bedroom light flip on the the glass window.
"In the nursery." She calls out in a soft voice but loud enough for Matt to hear as he looks up making eye contact through the tall windows across the patio area.
"Why are you sitting in the dark?" He speaks as he walks from their bedroom into the nursery." You scared me when you weren't in bed just now." Matt stops in the doorway now.
"You scared me." Gabby whispers back never looking up at him, but her tone was slightly cold." Do you know what time it is?"
"Yeah, I'm a, a sorry about that ." Matt stutters his words, rubbing the back of his neck." We lost track of time."
"We." Gabby looks over to him with a raised brow. You and Kelly right?"
"Yeah." Matt looked at her confused.
"I waited up all night for you." Gabby says in the same cold tone from earlier, as she turns to look back at the window at the sun beginning to rise." You do realise the bars closed hours ago right?" She says but looks back over to Matt after she finishes her sentence." Where were you?"
"Look Gabby, I can explain." Matt takes a step forward but Gabby stands from the rocking chair.
"Can you." She practically shouts at him"You know Kelly really brings out the worst in you."
"What's that suppose to mean?" Matt snaps back defensive.
"Look if you don't want me or this baby, just say it now." Gabby's tears begin to shed, as she throws the onesie at him.
"Gabby how can you say that?" Matt moves closer to Gabby but she steps back.
"I called you tonight." Gabby looks back up to Matt who is inches from her now." But only you didn't answer your phone."
"Gabby." Matt sighs." I can explain."
"You can explain?" She let's out a hurt chuckle." You can explain why some bimbo answered YOUR phone, and said you left it in her place."
"It's not what you think." Matt pleads again." We went back to her place, I needed to charge my phone, Kelly, he's the one who slept with her."
"Hmm." Gabby rolls her eyes." Same way I got pregnant ."
"Damn it Gabby, I didn't sleep with this girl." Matt shouts now losing his patients." And you damn well know you and I are different."
"Are we Matt?" Gabby let's out a deep breath placing a hand on her lower back feeling a dull pain, but ignores it for now." They why didn't you just come home?" She moves to lean her arms on the back of the rocking chair, more winded by the second as the pain increased by the second.
"Because I was drunk Gabby." Matt says in a softer voice, as he watches her in confusion." I wanted to sober up a bit...Gabby what's wrong?" He doesn't finish his first sentence moving to her side." Are you in pain?"
Gabby nods her head, breathing heavily." I think I'm in labour." She looks over to him nervously.
"Labour?" Matt looks at her with wide eyes, as he places his hand on her lower back." It's too soon."
"I know." Gabby cries out as the pain worsens and a gush of warm liquid soaks her pants." Matt, my water just broke." Her voice a deeper panic now.
"Come on, we gotta get you to the hospital." Matt takes Gabby's arm putting it around his shoulder to help her walk.
"Can you drive?" Gabby stops walking briefly." I mean are you sober?"
"Trust me baby, I'm sober for sure now." Matt chuckles, but with a hint of fear Gabby's never seen before. Matt raced through the streets of Chicago to the nearest hospital his one hand never leaving Gabby's as he drove." Babe we are almost there." He squeezes her hand as she leans forward in pain placing her free hand on the dashboard.
"I'm sorry." Gabby looks over to Matt with a look of fear in her eyes.
"We'll talk about this later." Matt says as he speeds into the parking lot of lakeshore now." Just hang in there baby." He throws the truck into park as Gabby cries out in pain once again." Need some help here." Matt calls out through the open emergency room doors as he jumps out running around to the passenger door.
"What do we have here?" A nurse comes running out pushing a wheel chair.
"My fiancé, I think she's in labour." Matt says frantic as he eases Gabby into the wheel chair." It's going to be ok babe." He whispers kissing the top of Gabby's head before the nurse pushes her away. Matt takes a deep breath then follows behind seconds later.
"What do we have..." The doctor runs around the nurses station stopping dead in her tracks...Hallie.
"Oh can this day get any worse." Gabby mutters as the nurse fills in Hallie, and Matt's back at Gabby's side taking her her hand.
"Matt, Gabby." Hallie says cold." Maybe I should call another doctor." She says looking between the couple then down to Gabby's belly.
"Yeah maybe that's best." Matt replys quietly.
Just as Hallie turns to find another doctor Gabby cries out in pain once again." Hallie, their too close." She says breathless.
"How far apart are your contractions?" Hallie moves to kneel in front of Gabby.
"Every two minutes." Gabby still breathless, grabs Hallie's hand getting her to look her in the eye." My water broke, and I'm only 34 weeks."
Hallie saw the fear in Gabby's eyes as she gives her a quick nod then stands." Get then into curtain 1 and page PEDs stat." She orders the nurses around her before turning back to Gabby and squeezing her hand." Your in good hands."
Gabby nods as the nurses quickly wheel her away but Matt stands there looking at Hallie still. Once she looks over to him Matt gives her a soft smile." Thank you." He whispers." I know she's in good hands."
"Your welcome...daddy." Hallie gives him the same soft smile as she walks over to him." She's terrified you best get in there." She turns Matt around by his shoulders patting him the back sending him off after Gabby. Hallie smiled to herself watching Matt rush off to be by Gabby's side before snapping out of her glance and grabbing what she needed from the nurses station.
"Dr. Thomas." The nurse calls from the curtain area, a few minutes later." She's fully dialated.
"Let's deliver this baby now" Hallie comes walking swiftly into the room." Did you page PEDs?" She whispers to the nurse." We need them hear asap, tell them its preterm labour, only 34 weeks gestation.
" You got it doctor." The female nurse turned on her heels rushing off to the nurse station once again.
"Ok, Gabby you ready to have this baby?" Hallie moves into the room taking a seat by Gabby's legs already in the stirrups." Now Gabby on need you to push for me on my count." Hallie now stands back up after doing a quick exam ." I know things are going to get a little scary in a few minutes cause a lot of people are about to enter the room, but I want your eyes focused on me the whole time."
"Ok." Gabby whispers back as she pants through another contraction.
"Ok on 3 I want a big push." Hallie sits back down on the stool." 1,2.3, push Gabby, push push push."
"Come on baby, you got this." Matt whispers in her ear as well while squeezing her hand.
"Alright Gabby that was great." Hallie peered up over the sheet." I need another deep breath then on 3 once again you are going to push with all you got." Hallie instructs glancing behind her noticing all the PEDs people entering." OK here we go 1,2,3 pushhhhh."
Gabby bears down with all she has this time, and with one last push, a baby enters the world." You did it baby." Matt kisses her temple.
"It's a girl." Hallie laughs out happily for the new parents, but quickly hands the baby off to the PEDs specialists.
"Is she ok?" Gabby's happy and scared tears fall all at once." Can I see her?"
The team hovered over this tiny baby doing their testing, as Matt and Gabby looked on nervously, as Hallie was working on delivering the placenta." Gabby I need you to lay back for me." Hallie said with slight nervousness in her voice.
"What's going on?" Matt takes a step closer looking down to Hallie.
"She's bleeding a lot." Hallies looks up to him a voice a whisper." I think her placenta may have tore." Just then more commotion stirred from around the baby, pulling Matt's attention." Go check it out, Matt." Hallie nodded her head." We are good here."
Matt walked over to the PEDs team now, just as someone calls out." She's turning blue." Causing Matt to freeze in his spoke." Her lungs are underdeveloped." That person looks over to Matt before the prepare to whisk her away to the nicu.
Just them Matt's attention is devereted back to Hallie's voice yelling." She's unresponsive, losing too much blood call the O.R. tell them we are on are way up.
"Hallie." Matt found his wording as she was pushing an unresponsive Gabby by in the bed." What, what?" Was all he could mutter as his eyes now looked back at the PEDs team incubating his daughter." I can't lose them." Matt mutters out as his tears spill down.
"Their both in the best hands." Hallie calls out as she rushes to catch up to Gabby's bed being pushed into the elevator.
Matt stood there stunned looking as his fiancé and daughter both get pushed down the hall in two different direction." Casey, man what's going on?" Severide and Shay happen to come running through the doors now. Matt looks at them with a blank stare for a minute before bursting into tears falling into his friends arms.
