It was Sam's favourite part of the hunt – when the monsters had been eliminated or the ghosts ganked, when they climbed into the Impala with the satisfaction of a job well done. Dean would still be running on adrenaline at this point and his buzz was contagious – coming off him in waves and surrounding Sam in the shotgun seat.
Sam lived for moments like this; when Dean's grin was so wide and his eyes so bright that for a moment the pieces of their shattered lives were pulled together and they shone.
And Dean would turn and look at him until Sam's smile became a full on laugh and it was inevitable that Sam would fall in love with him just a little more in that second.
And the car would keep driving, and the brothers would keep smiling, and all the while the demons were left behind them in the dust.
