CHAPTER 10
Will breathed out a harsh sigh through his nose after he slithered his tongue between her lips. Will squeezed her behind and she answered with a groan, his clever trick winning him the dominance of the kiss. He felt himself heat up under her touch, his hand slipping beneath her shirt as he kissed down her neck.
Laura groaned to herself in dismay. This wasn't smart.
"Will." She called out, her hands pressing against his chest. The man paused at the action and leaned back, eyeing her suspiciously. She sighed and held his face, the determined look in her eyes made him grimace.
"This isn't the right time." She told him, no hesitation left in her voice. Will clicked his tongue and sighed at her words. Of course, too good to be true. His confidence seeping away meekly.
"Is it still worth it to ask why?" he huffed, avoiding eye contact, his hands falling down onto the couch on either side of him.
"You've just been fired, if anything I can judge character and see changes in people. If I may say so, you're a bit of a wreck." She concluded and stood, leaving his lap to cool down harshly, sending shivers up his spine.
"You just got fired and it's clear that you liked your job. You're not exactly stable at the moment." She shared. Will's eyes widened shocked and he looked at her in fear. Does she know about the screening? He quickly looked away again. No there's no way she could know.
"So let's just take a few steps backwards and continue at the pace we did. We need to be realistic and I'm not prepared to endanger my well-being." Laura picked up the beer and downed it. Will took a slow breath to calm his nerves.
"You speak like you know what's best for everyone, but clearly you're just thinking about yourself. I'd like you to leave." He stated and pushed himself up, a scowl on his face. Laura rolled her eyes at his clear hostility, his eyes fixated on the window with a look of betrayal and grave irritation.
"Oh I intended to anyway. But you still owe me dinner." He could hear the grin in his voice and frowned, closing his eyes in confusion.
"Your mood swings are not something I'd like to be exposed to again, Miss Carshew." Laura put the empty glass back down and stepped towards him. Her hand landed on his shoulder, making him freeze on the spot.
"Oh Will, your sudden formality hurts me." She mocked lightly and tapped her fingers on his shoulder.
"Yet I don't think either of us can deny the interest we have in the other. Is it really such a strange notion to want to take things slow? I thought that was your preferred method of dealing with things." She mused and slipped away from him again. Will clenched his jaw, she seemed to know how he liked to handle things. He didn't like it.
The man craned his neck in annoyance as he heard her put her coat on. Her insight in him and determination to get along with him spiked his interest, he couldn't deny that. Not a lot of people had that kind of patience.
"I'll call you." He stated, when he heard her pause in putting her shoes on, he smirked.
The blonde woman smiled to herself satisfied and laced her shoes up. She left without an answer.

Will took his glasses from his nose, retrieving a handkerchief from his pocket. As he busied his hands, his eyes roved over the small harbor. Some teenagers were at the docks, some hopping in their boats impatiently as they waited for their friends that were still untying their knots. The skies were grey, making the light in John's office stand out more.
With a slow intake of breath the black haired man put his glasses back on and started for the container. He had stayed away from Laura for a quite few days, calming his mind and gathering his wits. The disgruntledness from the last time he met the woman still made him grimace. But these past days he'd thrown himself on finding a new job. Will needed something else, something to keep him busy. Otherwise he'd become even more of a hermit, and although that was an appealing consequence of him losing his job, he knew that being disconnected from the world for too long would drive him insane. Laura was a good solution, as it were. She respected his boundaries, most of the time, and would leave him alone when he wanted her to.
Will huffed when he stopped in front of the door. He knocked, the muscles in his back tensing ever so slightly as he waited. A heavy footfall sounded inside and he tried to remember Laura's walk, listening for a similarity. The door was swung open and John appeared, his shirt was tight around his stomach. He'd gained some weight, a waft of greasy scent filled Will's noise. He grimaced disgusted at the oily stench of fast-food.
"Oh, good afternoon Graham. What can I do for you?" John took a step back and relaxed, eyes shooting to the kids at the dock. They had started to shout in enthusiasm. Will smiled tightly and raised his head.
"Hello, John. I wanted to talk to Laura about something. Is she here?" The older man frowned confused and looked away from the teens sailing off onto the lake. Will looked nervous, his jaw clenched and eyes looking at John's shoulder. He'd gotten used to the black haired man avoiding eye contact by now.
"No, it's her day off." He mumbled back, shifting his weight onto one leg. Will tried not to twitch as the other man gave him a curious once-over.
"What'd you want her for?"
"Nothing special, just some personal business." He waved off and backed away, fully intending to leave instantly. So much for his smooth plan. John blinked and stepped outside. When he caught himself, not knowing why he was trying to stop Will, he froze uncomfortably.
"Well, if it's urgent, why don't you call her? You've got her number, right?" He started hesitantly, his phone was dead and he didn't know Laura's number by heart. Giving her address was probably invasive. The man sighed inwardly.
Will's eyes shot to John's mustache momentarily before lowering back to the ground. He opened and closed his mouth, startled by what sounded like a reprimand. He shifted on his feet and readjusted his glasses.
"Uh, right. Sorry to have bother you." He smiled awkwardly and turned on his heels, hurrying to his car. John watched him go curiously before smacking his lips and retreating back into his office. Will fumbled with his keys before shoving them into the lock of his car's door.

Laura glanced at her phone when it rung, placing her glass of wine on the table and pushing her sunglasses in her hair. She shielded the screen with her hand, squinting her eyes at the caller ID as the sun shone in her face. The blonde picked up and put her sunglasses back on her nose.
"Hello, Will. This is Laura." She greeted calmly, eyes roving over the small town from her vintage point. Laura never regretted paying the extra dollars the terrace had cost her. She'd lived in prettier and fancier places, but she like her apartment. It was nice and calm, and in a good neighborhood. A grin stretched her lips at stuttered answer at the other end of the line. She knew perfectly well why he was calling, she took a pleased sip of her wine.
