Seeing the Sun

Chapter 20

A/N: Well, I think I may be more focused on this story rather than the others for a while, seeing as I want to finish something sometime soon. Don't get me wrong, this story has a long way to go. I think. At least ten chapters, I promise you.

She's surprised at how stupid people can be.

I mean, seriously, a flamethrower? Sure, they all laugh maniacally as the flames block her view, but she gets the last laugh. Like she always does. This will be easy, for her. She takes out her pistol, which is heated by the flames, and shoots in the direction the flames are coming from. The previously mentioned fire stops, and so do her targets.

"Fuckers," she mutters, before shooting each and every one of them right between the eyes.

She's met with an unusual silence. No sirens. No screams. Wait... yes, there were screams. Off in the distance. She can hear it. And sirens. But they seem to be staying in one place. She can smell blood, she notes.

She might as well do something.

Takane is cornered by what can only be described as a monster. It's huge, bug-like (A/N: Don't you DARE tell me you don't recognize this. Eastern Angel, Western Hawk ring a bell?) and well, wants to eat her. Her bike has already been thrown, and she can't reach her sword. As if she could use something that's snapped in half.

The monster swipes at her head, but misses, hitting her arm. She screams, loud and in pain.

"Pathetic," she hears a demonic voice, above her. Looking up, she sees the angel of death. "I heard a saying once: If you scream, they win." The new monster jumps down from the five-story building, landing in front of Takane, not a scratch on her. "Looks like you need some help, officer."

The masked woman takes out her dual pistols, shooting at the thing's foot. It immediately shifts it's attention to her, enraged. She runs around it, kicking the remnants of Takane's sword to the injured woman in the process. She makes a taunting motion with her finger.

The thing swipes at her, but she jumps over it. Standing on it's arm, she shifts so that she's on it's back. She roots the barrel of her gun deep into the back of it's head before shooting it multiple times. It falls down, limp. The hooded figure puts a hand on their mask, laughing slightly. "You're welcome."

They have to dodge a piece of razor sharp wood a second later, accidentally taking off their mask in the process. "Hey now," her hood falls, "that's no way to treat someone you're indebted to, Takane."

Her violet eyes widen as Jo scales the building where she came from faster than anyone else would ever be able to. She hears the rev of a bike engine as she realizes that no one will believe her. They had encountered Jo many times, every time astounded by how strong she was, always thinking that she should use that for the good of the city. Since the incident at the school, she'd been convinced Jo was a monster. But...

How the hell were they supposed to know she'd been holding back?

Jo and Meg stand on the roof of the school, a crowd behind them.

"You're not going to do it, are you?" Meg seems confused, but Jo seems perfectly at ease.

"So if I make it to the ground without stairs and without getting hurt, you pay me?" Jo ignores Meg's questions, turning to face the "bad-boys". Their leader nods.

"Yep. That's the deal."

Both Meg and Jo smirk, knowing the silver-haired girl will be able to do it. "Alright," says Jo. "Have the money by Friday, or I'll seriously hurt you."

Jo makes a running leap off the building, grabbing onto the flagpole and spinning around so that she lands on a lower balcony. From their, she swings off and lands on a window-sill. Shifting so that she's hanging from where she was standing, she presses her boots into the dark brick wall. As fast as she can, she changes the position of her hands so that she's sliding down the wall, and then propels off the wall and lands in a tree. She has a shit-eating grin on her face when she jumps out of the tree, flipping off the guys that are all watching, jaws on the floor.

"You fuckers better get my money."

"That was priceless, Jo," comments Meg, laughing as she pets Kannibal. "Those idiots thought you wouldn't be able to do it. Do you think they'll really pay you?"

"Fear is a great motivator," states Jo, ripping off a piece of an apple to feed her dog. The two of them are sitting on the park bench, spoiling the dog that rests at their feet. Even the dog seems to be in a good mood. "And from the look of it, they're scared shitless of me."

"Yeah, good point." Meg leans onto Jo's shoulder, face pressing into the cool leather of her jacket. "Damn, you spoil this dog don't you?"

"Yeah, I guess I do," agrees Jo. "But he's deserving of it. Bred to be loyal and obedient, but only to a specific person. He's been my dog. He would even listen to-" Jo stops herself. "He wouldn't listen to anyone but me, for some reason."

"Hmm..." Meg looks down. "Kannibal, up."

The dog just grins at her, tongue sticking out from the side of his mouth.

Jo snaps her fingers, and Kannibal shoots up, ears perked and awaiting a command. Meg jumps, at first, but then starts laughing. Jo reaches into her jacket pocket, taking out a dog treat. "'Ere you go," she hands it to the dog. "Good boy."

"Spoiled," sings Meg.

"Deserving of it," retorts Jo.

The two look at eachother, both with deadpan expressions before they eventually give in and laugh. Meg likes the sound of Jo's laugh. It sounds... carefree, wild, she thinks. It suits the girl's appearance, she guesses.

As the laughter dies down, Meg finds herself in the increasingly frequent situation of having Jo's head on her lap. She brushes her thin fingers soothingly across the soft silver strands, and Jo's breathing slows. It seems Meg's the only person who can get her to sleep peacefully, and the younger girl takes pride in that fact.

After all, Jo looks so calm when she sleeps.

A/N: So yeah, that's that. Now I'm just dragging out until I get to Jo's past. XD
