Akili-chan: May doesn't always think things through which has-although she doesn't realize it-resulted in something very bad happening. This is in Reillys' POV which doesn't give the others much input in this chapter. You will be seeing more of their reactions at some point. One of the reasons I'm not having Peter and Reilly buddy buddy like is because I can't see either moving past what happened that fast. Peter has his guilt which as we know sometimes takes a life of it's own. Reilly wants to be close to Peter but too much negative interaction makes him wary.
Warning for cursing and talk of child abuse.
...
"Isn't he just adorable?"
The chatter went on around him with his estranged relatives talking to the Parkers without the need of his input. Introductions were made, there was small talk about their trip over and mentions of dinner. Reilly stared at the proceedings in a state of shock willing himself to believe this was just a cruel nightmare. His usually agile mind and witty mouth rendered dim at the presence of the people he never thought he'd see again. Had hoped he'd never see again. All he could do was stare in horror not sure what to do with his past and present colliding. Anything he could think of was too risky if he wanted to leave this situation with any dignity intacted. It was a timebomb waiting to go off and all Reilly could do was wait for that moment to come. No one had noticed his panic yet due to being distracted by their guests. Mary Jane balanced her son on her hip while trying to put him in a highchair. May looked at pictures his aunt had brought and Peter checked on dinner while his other uncle ...drank from his flask.
Taking a shuddering breath Reilly took a sip of his drink. His hand shook and refused to steady itself despite willing himself to take a deep breath. By the time Mary Jane and Peter served their meals his hands were in his lap.
"He's always been such a sweetheart." His aunt cooed. She hadn't stopped talking since entering the kitchen and gave him a watery smile.
"Yeah, he's always been something alright." May joked.
It took all his willpower not to react and silently prayed to god that the comment wouldn't be used as ammo. Reilly knew it was asking too much to hope the couple had changed over the years. Being observant as he was he could already see the telltale signs that nothing had changed in that regard. The flask, the pinpoint application of make up for concealing, her glazed over eyes and his uncles' pointed looks. Those were only a few of the warning signs Reilly knew from his time living with them.
"That's one way of putting it." No one else noticed the undertones of his uncles' words but him.
"Do you have any embarrassing stories?" May meant it as a joke, Reilly knew that. But the feeling of betrayal at her actions doubled. This was all happening because once again she had ignored him to do whatever the hell she felt like. May had done this to him and that knowledge hurt worse than nearly being ripped apart by Venom.
"None of that young lady, not unless you want some of your own less than steller stories to be told." With a wink Mary Jane put his plate down and gave him a reasurring pat on the shoulder.
"He did like to play that game...what was it dear?" Looking to her husband his aunt didn't seem to notice-nor did anyone else-his look of disgust.
"I don't remember the boy being that tough." Still setting the table with their plates Mary Jane gave him a curious look and Reilly had trouble breathing. Maybe the man realized he was trending too close to the truth for comfort as a lie covered up the misstep. "I guess sports weren't his thing."
"Sports were never my thing either." Peter added casting his nephew what Reilly thought was a surprisingly warm smile. "I did get more active during my teens but I guess everyone has to find their niche. Mayday used to be on her schools' team."
The pride in his voice made Reilly sink further in his chair. Before him was some strange extreme scaling of parenting. The Parkers that adored their children and the people who briefly adopted him. Thoughts long since buried started to return asking the same questions he had pondered as a kid. Was god punishing him? Did they act this way because of him? Try as he might it was hard to silence such deeply rooted doubts in the presence of those that had planted a least some of those seeds.
"Oh look! This is from the time we went to the Stark Park! We had such fun!"
Reilly stared in disbelief wondering not for the first time if they lived in different alternate realities. Sure the trip had started out okay but it had quickly turned unbearable. She had gotten drunk after arguing with her husband and his uncle had taken him to the bathroom for a "talk." The stares from the other customers after they left had been one of the most humiliating walks he ever had especially once the bruises started to swell. An hour and a half later they finally took him to the emergency room. Knowing he was expected to say something in response to her distorted memory Reilly forced himself to speak.
"It was something."
Normally there would be sarcasm laced in his tone now he just sounded tired. Perhaps it's just defeat in the face of the ineviable. Experience had taught Reilly long ago that it's impossible to deflect or stall what's to come for long. So why doesn't he just get it over with? The shock was still overwhelming leaving him in a somewhat paralyzed state. Only able to watch what's to come unable to stop it just like when he was little. It doesn't matter that he can defend himself physcially they can still cause damage in other ways.
"Maybe we can all go on a trip together sometime!" He almost winces at how in denial his aunt is. Sure he told comforting lies once he became Reilly Tyne intern but they were for a cover story. She believes her delusional fantasy of wedded bliss while raising their beloved nephew. "It would be nice to spend some time as a family again. Speaking of which I forgot to ask earlier. How are you related again?"
"Er, Ben-his father-was my cousin." Not that Peter was exactly honest. Although telling someone their clone had a kid which made the relationship confusing wouldn't be believed.
"And you're sure he's the father?" It's said like someone told him that the sky is neon green instead of blue. His uncle had been taking slips of his flask when no one else has been looking. The Parkers have been busy eating and focusing on his aunt's pictures. Reilly has noticed though, he's been watching to see when the fuse is lit and his world begins to crash down in flames. Everything he's been building with his fathers' family is teetering on this dinner. He hasn't moved his hands once to so much as pick up a fork since it began. With his stomach in knots it'd be hard to stomach anything even if he could attempt to pretend otherwise.
Benjy spilled his drink all over his front and cried.
"What?" Peter blinked at the question not sure why it's being asked. "Of course I'm sure."
Mary Jane glanced over at Reilly and the moment she does he knows she sees it. Her whole body freezes, the pleasant social smile fades away. It's like a light switch has been turned on changing her whole demeanor. "May, take your brother up stairs now."
Looking away from whatever photo she was examining May frowned. "What? But I was-"
"You heard me young lady."
Confused May does at she's told lifting the still crying baby into her arms. Turning away from her daughter Mary Jane looked back at him.
"Did you do a test?" The curve of his uncles' smile has turned nasty.
Still not certain what he was getting at Peter scratched his beard. "Well yes although I already knew from another-uh-relative."
"Huh, that's one mystery solved then." Finally the other shoe drops as the man focuses on Reilly for the first time. "We always wondered, didn't we dear?"
"Oh yes, it was horrible not to know. We always prayed for him." Drabbing her eyes his aunt reached over to pat Reillys' head.
"You prayed for...Ben?" Looking from husband to wife he then turned to Mary Jane as if she had the answers.
"Maybe it'd be for the best if we ended dinner early. The kids have homework to finish." For a brief moment Reilly felt hope flair in his chest.
"It can wait, we haven't seen our angel for so long!" The woman said brushing off the request as if they weren't unexpected guests that were overstaying their welcome. Mary Jane was attempting to say something else when his aunt smiled at Peter then replied: "No. We were praying for him. Poor dear had no idea who his father was not to mention his mother-!"
"The worthless whore."
Reilly rubbed the bridge of his nose as the Parkers gasped at the insult, he didn't think he could stand to look at either of them.
"I don't think she even knew who the father was! She turned out bad enough then she gets knocked up with a bastard!" Face burning with anger and shame Reilly took deep calming breathes like Matt taught him. "She couldn't just damn herself more she had, she had to make us all suffer for her stupidity! That fifthy lying-!"
"You're the liar!" He hadn't meant to say anything but the anger had boiled over. When he wasn't fighting crime in the streets Reilly spoke out against injustice in court. After enduring all he had it was against his nature to remain silent.
"You think so?" The amusement on that mans' face made Reilly want to throw him through a wall. Repeatedly. "You never knew that bitch!"
"That's enough! You don't talk that way in our house! You don't insult our family!" Mary Janes' voice shook at the end in anger although his uncle seemed to think it was with fear. He smirked at her then reclined back in his seat like she hadn't spoken.
"I know what she was like from someone who knew her better than you did!" As complicated as his relationship with Kaine was Reilly would always trust his opinion on his parents. Kaine wouldn't lie and his certainty of it made the hateful relative in front of him pause. If only for a moment.
"Yeah? Well what do you think it says about a woman like her that runs around, gets knocked up with some random assholes' kid because she couldn't keep her leg-!"
"GET OUT OF OUR HOUSE!"
The fury in Mary Janes' yell stopped everyone dead in the tracks. Peter who had been in a stupor at the mans' behavior snapped out of his daze to stand up next to his wife.
"You heard her. Get out now."
"I see where the kid gets his spinelessness from, Parker. Hiding behind your woman?" Both Parkers advanced on the man with narrowed eyes. "What happened to this "Ben"? Is he as much a waste of space as his bastard? Must be if he had the conjones to abandon this-!"
"Get out or I'll throw you out myself!" It looked like if not for Mary Jane holding his arm Peter would punch the man across his house.
"Reilly, go upstairs."
"Reilly?" Drawn out of her musings his aunt stared at Mary Jane like she grew another head. "Who's Reilly? He's-"
"My name IS Reilly." He corrected.
"No, it's not."
"YOU changed my name." Why was he bothering to argue? He should have just ran but his legs weren't obeying him.
"Of course we did, to honor your grandfather."
Reilly did his best to hide his disgust from the Parkers. "He doesn't deserve to be honored."
Only his uncle heard his remark and in his anger chose that moment to attack. Reilly was more than prepared to defend himself and he could see Peter pulling the man back with barely restrained fury. It never got that far as a sudden roar erupted from the other side of the room. It was a sound he knew well, one of pure agony and rage. Kaine had entered the kitchen and in a flash had his terrified uncle in his clutches.
"I know you're a stupid man." The hand around the mans' neck tightened. "Which is why I tried to make my last message one you'd understand. I suppose I need to make myself clearer!"
"N-no!"
"I told you to stay away from the boy!" The hate in Kaines' eyes was deadly. Frightening and unstoppable.
As the scene played out Reilly remembered his uncle-the one in Kaines' grip-getting a bad beating. At the time he had assumed it was at the hands of a bookie the man had ticked off after one too many gambling debts. The realization that this had in fact been Kaine wasn't a pleasant one. The yells were reduced to white noise as the uninvited guests were sent running.
Kaine had been following him since he was that young? He had known of the abuse?
At the gentle touch to his shoulder Reilly flinched as if struck. The concerned faces of the Parkers and Kaine came into view. As if a dam had burst emotions he tried to bury were soon overwhemling him. There was too much to feel and say. Yet through all of this all he could think of was one thing.
"That was you?"
Kaine stared at him in puzzlement before the meaning became clear. "Of course it was me."
Of course.
Peter was saying something, it might be important, yet all he can focus on is- "You knew."
The fiecely protective expression softened making Kaine look far more vulnerable. "Not at first. I stopped it as soon as I knew."
To his horror there are tears blurring his vision but he refuses to cry in front of them. As much as he wants to say more Reilly can't form the words to convey what he means to Kaine. It's like being in the lab again knowing that his only parental figure has damned him then left him to his fate.
"Reilly."
"Don't." This...he can't deal with this, with them. Not now, maybe not ever.
It's so quiet that they can all hear May enter the kitchen. She's confused, upset, he doesn't know how much she heard. When she calls out to him all he can do is stare at her. Reilly feels betrayed, hurt, humiliated, furious and doesn't want to even look her. For so long he's tried to help her reach her potential, to look out for her. It took far too long to get close but it was never easy to open up. There's a million things he wants to say and honestly he knows how he could make her cry. How to make May feel ashamed of herself and realize just how pissed he is. Reilly is skilled with words and uses them to great affect in both parts of his life. But in the end what's the point? May never listens to him so why would she start caring what he has to say now?
Wordlessly he opened the backdoor leaving without a backwords glance. He's gone before any of them can leave the house.

A/N: The aunt and uncle were never named in the Darkdevil mini series. It doesn't say if their actually related by blood or not but I decided to say they were for this fic. I left it vague for the reader to decide which one is related to him. It was also unclear if Reilly Tyne was his birthname or something he chose to honor his parents. I decided that his aunt and uncle legal changed his name before they adopted him to whatever his grandfathers' name was. Partly because whoever is his moms' sibling would likely be in denial about the truth and it's actually something he'd refuse to accept as his own name. The name was never revealed but if you read Lost Days you know why Reilly would never want that name.
