CHAPTER 34
"There is no way I'm this lost!" Maggie said in a loud whisper to herself as she climbed out of her lifted truck and searched for a sign. The sun had set, casting a grey film over everything. Flicking her hair out of her face, Maggie kept one hand on her belt and began searching. She found a road sign nestled in a tree. "St. Mary's Convent. 2 Miles." With a roll of her eyes and a glance down the abandoned, worn down road, she turned to go back to her car. "Wait…" she mumbled and crouched low. She heard voices.
"Alright," a deep voice said, frustrated and sad. Maggie crept slowly toward the sound. Sam? "Do it."
"Thank God!" a female voice replied, Maggie peered through the branches and almost gasped aloud at the orange car parked in the clearing. There was no mistaking Sam. Tall and broad, Maggie watched as he made his way to the trunk of the car. Ruby was holding it open for him – and Maggie could hear the begging and pleading of a woman inside. She only saw Sam raise the knife before she rounded the trees, cocking the shotgun in her hand.
"Just what in the holy fuck do you think you're doing – Sam Winchester?" Sam started and turned around to meet eyes with her. He blanched.
"Maggie?"
"Hey Sam," the thin redhead sarcastically smiled with a wave. "Hello hell-bitch."
"Great." Ruby rolled her eyes. "Sam, we don't have time for this. Can we just do this? C'mon let's go." She turned and looked at Maggie, "You need to leave."
"Wait a minute, Ruby." Sam said shortly. Ruby opened her mouth to protest – "I said wait a damn minute!" there was a pause, "Maggie – you're here."
"I'm here," Maggie said, nodding her head, "to help you. Whatcha doin' with Nurse Betty in there?" She didn't give Sam a chance to respond. "You gonna drink her blood?" the woman in the trunk started screaming again, "Do you even have the slightest clue how sick this all is?" Sam was taken aback at Maggie's fiery anger. He had never seen her like this. Normally, she was chipper and funny, even in the most serious of situations. But here she was absolutely scary.
"It's the only way." Sam said wearily, "I wish you would understand that. I need the blood to be strong enough to defeat Lilith." Maggie was shaking her head. He moved to step forward but she held her gun up.
"I will shoot you."
"No you won't." San said and lifted his hand, easily sending the gun flying off into the forest. Maggie stared at him, horrified.
"That was my favorite."
"Jesus!" Ruby finally exploded. Maggie felt her body being lifted up and thrown against the trunk of a tree. "Will you shut up? Sam! It's now or never – let's go!" Sam looked at Maggie as if he were going to say how sorry he was – his face was pained – but in the end he said nothing. Maggie watched in horror as Sam sliced the woman's arm open and began sucking in earnest.
"Sam!" Maggie creid out as she watched. "Stop! There's gotta be another way – please!" She struggled against Ruby's force, crushing her against the tree, but it was no use. Maggie turned her head and closed her eyes against the screaming of the woman, and the sight of Sam leaning over her like a vampire.
When Sam was done, he stood up straighter – and his muscles were bulging. Ruby smiled and let Maggie go. She fell to her knees at first but quickly got up, running forward and pushing Sam to face her.
"This is the only way to stop Lilith." He said firmly. Maggie's nostrils flared and she could already tell Sam was too far gone. Maggie knew a thing or two about drug addicts. They told themselves it was just going to be one more hit because they need it, and then the next day they would quit. She knew that look on Sam's face. Pain tugged at her tearducts and Sam blinked, staring at her before turning away at the sight of betrayal on her face.
"What happened to the boy that was too shy to kiss me?" Maggie asked sadly. Sam swallowed and shook his head.
"He's gone." Maggie didn't even see it coming when he knocked her out.

The first thing Maggie noticed was the pounding in her head, originating somewhere near her jaw. The second thing she noticed was it was the dead of night. Blinking rapidly, Maggie slowly dragged herself to her feet, glancing around. She was at the exit before the convent. Sam had thrown her far. She fished her phone out of her pocket.
"Hey Mags."
"Bobby."
"You find Sam?"
Maggie rolled her eyes. "I did." She said sullenly. Bobby sighed.
"Take it that didn't go well." His voice said sadly on the other end.
"That demon is toxic." Maggie said earnestly. She groaned as she popped her back. "Even a few months ago if someone were to do that to someone he knew, Sam would be all over them trying to stop them. She's poison and Sam only has eyes for her." Maggie shook her head and ran her hand through her hair. "I really thought I'd be able to stop him – I thought we had some kind of a connection or something."
"Knock it off," Bobby said, not unkindly. "You know I hate this crap." Maggie shrugged.
"Anyways, he drained a nurse and then threw me 'bout three miles from my car." Maggie said angrily. "Any word from Emma or Dean?"
"Nothin'." Bobby sighed, "Like they vanished into thin air."
"Okay well I'm gonna start hightailing it to that convent." Maggie said, "If they call, tell 'em to go there."
"Alright. Hey, Maggie."
"Yeah?" she asked as she slipped a new clip into her gun.
"Be careful, girl."
"Yeah, you too." Maggie took off in a jog down the road.
Bobby, meanwhile, was hanging up the phone with a heavy and worried heart. Rubbing his hand over his face, Bobby stood from his desk chair and began making his way over toward the kitchen. Maybe some coffee would help.
Bobby Singer didn't know why he was so surprised that Emma was standing in his kitchen. "'Bout time. Where've you been?" he asked as he turned on the coffee maker. "You know we have an apocalypse to stop, right?"
Emma's body turned around and smiled at her surrogate father. "Hello, Bobby." She smild and waved at him. Her eyes were jet black. The old hunter sighed.
"You better get out of that girl, bitch." He growled.
"It's so comfy in here, though." Sara said, smiling. She took the knife from her belt and held it up against Bobby's neck. He could feel her hand shaking. "She really loves you. Wonder how she would feel if I carved you up into little pieces." For a moment, Bobby saw a flash of white Sara's eyes, but he knew that it wasn't hers. Emma? The knife was pressed so tightly to his neck that he dared not move, but he didn't give Sara any reason to think he was afraid. "Where is it?" she asked.
Emma was screaming, but no sound seemed to be coming from her mouth. She saw what Sara saw, felt like Sara did, but she couldn't move or speak on her own. Bobby was staring at her with wide but brave eyes. "Let him go!" she screamed, but of course her mouth didn't move except to ask "Where is it?"
Bobby wasn't saying anything. He only looked at her.
"Where is it?" Sara demanded and pushed closer to him, "You better tell me right now or I'll cut off your head and burn this place to the ground until I find it!"
"I don't know what you're talkin' about." Bobby growled. Sara shook her head and went to swipe the knife with her hand.
"What?" she said in wonder and again tried to swipe her arm. The knife made a small cut in Bobby's neck, but no more damage was done.
"Don't you dare hurt him you black eyed bitch." Emma's voice growled inside her head. Sara smiled wide, looking amused.
"Seems like someone in here's still got some fighting left in her," She laughed, and backed up away from Bobby. Swinging her elbow, it connected with Bobby's jaw, and the old man fell to the floor, passed out.
"Tell me where it is or I will inhabit him next." Sara's voice was low and serious. Emma felt her heart pick up speed. "And I'll burn him from the inside out. All the while you can watch. I'll keep you alive long enough for that… maybe."
Emma, for the life of her had no idea what she was talking about. "Yeah okay, let me just get my apocalypse recipe guide and be able to read your mind to see what it is you're looking for." She replied sarcastically.
"The talisman!" Sara screamed. The windows broke with her outrage. "It's a rope, covered in gold. WHERE IS IT?!"
Emma had seen something like that before, and she inwardly sighed. Tears began to prickle the corners of Sara's eyes and she reached her hand up to touch them. She didn't have much time left in this body. Emma was starting to take back over. "Fine." Sara said out loud, and pulled Emma's gun off of her belt. "Say goodbye to Bobby, Emma."
"STOP!" Emma's voice rang loud in her mind. "In the safe. Downstairs. There's a combination to get in. 10-14-81. My birthday."
"Aw how sweet." Sara said sickened. Quickly, she zapped herself down the stairs and punched in the combination.
Emma didn't know what the thing was that was in the safe. It looked like a rope, entwined with gold. When Sara reached out and touched it it began to glow softly. Emma felt Sara smile before she pulled the talisman out and held it in her hands. "Showtime, folks."

"What's gonna happen to Emma?" Dean asked, when he turned around and saw that it was Castiel standing there. Cas sighed as he looked down guiltily at the ground. "Tell me!"
"The two first demons – sisters… Sara and Lilith have to die to set Lucifer free." Cas said quietly. Dean's head was reeling.
"What?"
"Emma's powers make her special. She was granted them after she killed her parents – when the demon was inside her and she killed her parents." Dean frowned, "Emma is self-sacrificing, her soul is pure. The demon that killed her family left a bit of himself inside of him to track her. In preparation for this night." Dean shook his head and backed up a couple of steps, his back hitting the wall.
"So for Lucifer to be set free, she has to die?"
Cas looked up at him. "I'm sorry."
"Sorry?" Dean demanded angrily. He reached out and punched Castiel in the face. Castiel turned his face to the side but his face didn't change expression. Dean turned around quickly and grabbed his hand in pain. "It's Armageddon, Cas. You need a bigger word than 'sorry'." He walked away from Cas across the white walled room, running his hand through his hair.
"Try to understand – this is long foretold. This is your-"
"Destiny?" Dean said in disgust as he turned around, "Don't give me that 'holy' crap. Destiny, God's plan… it's all a bunch of lies, you poor, stupid son of a bitch!" Cas raised his eyebrows, "It's just a way for your bosses to keep me and you in line! You know what's real? People, Cas! Families, that's real. And you're gonna watch them all burn? You're gonna stand here while Emma dies?" Cas flinched at that.
"She is a savior!" Cas said earnestly, "She's going to save the world and bring it to paradise. Her sacrifice is so noble. What is so worth saving? I see nothing but pain here. I see inside you. I see your guilt, your anger, confusion. In paradise, all is forgiven. You'll be at peace. Even with Sam."
"But not Emma?" Cas looked down, "Well you can take your peace, and shove it up your lily-white ass. 'Cause I'll take the pain and the guilt. I'll even take Sam as is. It's a lot better than being some Stepford bitch in paradise. This is simple, Cas! No more crap about being a good soldier. There is a right and there is a wrong here, and you know it!" Castiel hung his head and turned away. Dean reached out and grabbed his shoulder. "Look at me! You know it! You were gonna help me once, weren't you? You were gonna warn me all about this before they dragged you back to Bible camp. Help me – now… please!"
"What would you have me do?" Cas asked.
"Get me to Sam. We can stop this before it's too late. He's gonna kill Emma, Cas!"
"I do that, we will all be hunted. We'll all be killed."
"If there is anything worth dying for… this is it!" Dean said seriously. Castiel just shook his head and looked down. "You spineless," Dean said as he turned around, "soulless, son of a bitch! What do you care about dying? You're already dead. We're done!"
"Dean…"
"If you don't help me, we're done!"

Sara walked down the hallway of the convent like she was a queen. The demons watched her go, her long white dress flowing behind her as she finally saw her sister at the end of the hallway. Sara smiled, and the two of them embraced.
"Did you bring it?" Lilith asked. She had a knife in her hand.
"I did." Sara smiled, and pulled the rope out. Sara took the knife in Lilith's hand and reached across, slitting her sister's wrist. She then did the same to her own. The sisters watched silently as the blood flowed into a goblet. "You were always Father's favorite." Sara said nonchalantly. Lilith smiled, "But just wait until He sees who I've brought. The pure soul." Lilith again smiled and the two demons dipped the golden rope into the blood.
"Just wait til you see what I've brought to the party." Lilith said, a sarcastic smile on her lips and the two of them slowly wrapped the rope around their hands. Together, they stood and faced the door to the sanctuary, each with one hand tied to the other sister. What they saw was not a surprise. Every demon in the hallways was lying on the floor. Sara and Lilith both smiled at each other when Sam came down the hallway. He entered the sanctuary and flung out his hand. The two of them were flung across the room, slamming into the altar and falling to the ground. Emma, inside, watched – resigned and terrified. She was going to die tonight. Again, Sam flung his hand out and the two of them were trapped against the altar. Sara's eyes flickered to behind Sam, and Emma inside panicked. "Dean?!" Ruby closed the door.
"I have been waiting for this… for a very long time." Sam said menacingly. Sara smiled, but inside Emma was screaming for Dean at the top of her lungs. He was banging on the door.
"Then give us your best shot." Lilith grinned.
Emma had never experienced pain like this. Sara threw her head back and screamed, echoing Emma's own pain. Like a thousand white hot knives piercing every inch of her body. Emma wanted to writhe, crawl away, cry, but Sara only screamed, and laughed.
"Sam!" Dean's voice from beyond the veil of pain. It all stopped for a moment and Sara leaned forward, struggling for breath. She saw Sam turn to look at the door. "Sam! Sammy!"
"What are you waiting for?!" Ruby was screaming, "Now! Sam, do it now!"
Lilith was laughing and Sara turned her head to look at her sister. "You turned yourself into a freak. A monster. And now you're not gonna bite? I'm sorry, but that is honestly adorable." Sam's eyes had turned black.
Emma had control over her mouth all of a sudden, "Sammy, don't!" she cried, "Please don't! Sam!" The pain began again, this time worse than the last. Emma felt her bones start to break, her skin start to split. Blood poured down her body. Lilith was the first to collapse, and as Emma fell onto the ground, she felt the demon leave her body, her own quick heartbeat returning to her.
In and out of consciousness, Emma listened to Ruby yelling in the room, "And it is written that the first demons shall be the last seal. And you busted them open! Now guess who's coming to dinner."
"Oh my god." Sam said, devastated.
"Guess again. You don't even know how hard this was! All the demons out for my head. No one knew. I was the best of those sons of bitches! The most loyal! Not even Alistair ew! Only Lilith! Yeah, I'm sure you're a little angry right now, but, I mean, come on, Sam! Even you have to admit - I'm - I'm awesome!" Slowly, Emma was painfully pushing herself to her feet. It was no use.
"You lying bitch!"
Emma turned her head and was falling again as Dean rushed in the door. In a blur of motion that was slowly fading out for Emma, she watched as Ruby flickered with light and then crumpled to the floor. Dean didn't even hear Sam's apology as he rushed to drop to his knees beside the blonde hunter lying on the floor. Sam stood back, his hand over his mouth.
"Emma?!" Dean said loudly. Emma's eyes opened for a moment and she looked at him. He was blurry. "Emma, hey. Hey!"
"Dean…" she mumbled, but she knew there was no way they were going to save her. Her heartbeat was slowing. It was over for her. "You have to get out of here. Lucifer is coming."
Sam watched as the blood on the floor spun in a circle. Any moment now… there was suddenly a flash of white light. "Dean!" he cried, grabbing onto Dean's shoulder, "Dean he's coming!"
"Emma, no." Dean was sobbing, his body crouched over hers. Emma was smiling at him, though her eyes were closed. "No, no, no please. Emma please, angel. C'mon don't die." He felt helpless, a hand wrapping around his heart as she went limp in his arms. There were no cheesy last minute 'I love you's, there were no dying wishes, no last words except for them to leave. This was not how people were supposed to die. There was supposed… there was supposed to be a moment of love. But for Dean, there was just an emptiness, a hole that had been burned through his chest. Tears fell onto Emma's bloodstained and torn up body. Sam grabbed Dean by the back of the shirt as the cage finally reached the edge of the bloodline. Emma was dead.
"Dean! He's coming!"
Maggie had seen it all. She stood frozen in the doorway, but when the cage began to give off a high pitched whining sound, Maggie shook her head.
"WHAT ARE YOU TWO DOING?!" Maggie's voice was screaming, but Dean could hardly hear her. She grabbed onto the Winchester brothers, and with all her strength hurled them toward the door. Dean made a last attempt to grab onto Emma's body, but Maggie was screaming and pushing him away from her. "She's dead!" Maggie cried, tears running down her face. "We have to get out of here! Ahh!" something grabbed onto Maggie's foot and dragged her back toward the cage across the sanctuary. Sam tried to grab onto her. "Maggie!" but it was too late. The doors were shut, leaving the two women inside.
The ringing was too loud, and both Dean and Sam covered their ears, dropping to their knees, one beside the other. In a moment, they both knew, they were going to die. For some reason, neither of them had a problem with that.
