Bella
The plane landed softly and I pried my eyes open. I didn't have a cell phone and wished I could remember my parents' number so I could call them from the airport. I didn't like the idea of chancing it and them not being home, but, what could I do? I really didn't have a second option. Not with the only reliable payment source was my credit card and if I knew Jacob, he'd somehow find a way to come find me. He always did. Whether I was shopping or dining at a restaurant, he would find me and scold me for being alone. He was always so damn paranoid about me getting kidnapped or some crazy shit. Funny. I bet being kidnapped and killed was better than being slapped around by him.
I hailed a cab and squinted against the Florida sun. I'm sure it would have been a good idea when I bought the sweats and t-shirt from the airport store to grab a pair of sunglasses.
Store fronts passed by which eventually led into a nice suburb on the outskirts of Jacksonville. I smiled at the cab driver and gave him the remaining amount of cash I had found in my clutch and he drove off.
The house still looked the same as when I had seen it three years ago. Yellow stucco and a red roof. Two palm trees were in the front yard, affording the house to be shaded.
A woman came out of the front door, humming a tune to herself and swaying her hips. She had on a huge sun hat and I smiled. I walked up the brick drive way and tentatively stood behind her as she knelt to get rid of some weeds in her garden.
"Hey, mom," I whispered. My mother flew back and clutched her chest. I bit my lip and looked around the neighborhood.
"Jesus, Bella. Give your mother a heart attack!" She screeched up, scrambling to her feet. Long arms enveloped me into a hug and smiled and hugged her back.
"Oh, Bella! Why didn't you tell us you were coming, sweetie?" She asked and pulled back to put a piece of hair behind my ear.
"It was sort of spur of the moment,"I chewed my bottom lip.
My mother's face beamed with a large smile and she grabbed my hand. "Oh, your father is going to be happy. Charlie! Charlie!" She pulled me behind her into the air conditioned house.
I could hear footsteps echoing around the house and grumbling coming from my father.
"Renee, can't this wait a damn minute. I was on the phone- Bells?" He stood in the doorway to the living room. I gave him a small wave and he absorbed me into a hug.
"Oh, baby, what's got you dropping out of the sky like this? You aren't in trouble are you?" He raised his eyebrow and rubbed my back. I chewed on my lip and looked down at the floor.
"No, dad. I just wanted to surprise you and mom. I haven't seen you guys in forever."
"Because that boyfriend of yours is a twit." Charlie said gruffly and crossed his arms. My mom smacked him on the shoulder and smiled.
"Jacob? That's his name?" My mom smiled. "He's a nice guy."
"Um, well, we sort of, kind of broke up? I just needed to get away actually." I whispered and hugged myself.
Charlie's mustache twitched and he put his hands on his hips. "He didn't hurt you did he?"
I shook my head quickly. " No dad. I just needed to get away from the city."
Charlie nodded his head but I could tell he wasn't buying it. My mom wasn't either but she wouldn't say anything. "Where are your bags?" My mom smiled.
"Uh, well, I sort of left spur of the moment?" I shrugged. My father ran a hand through his hair and over his face.
"You just left?" My dad asked.
"Charlie, let's let Bella settled in a room. I'm sure her flight was long and she needs to rest." Code for 'We're going to talk about you and make you think we're not talking about you'.
Charlie narrowed his eyes as mom whisked me away. I knew he would be in later to hound me for answers.
Mom led me down a path of hallways and into a soft yellow room. "Well, it doesn't matter why you are here. What matters is you're here." She bent to kiss my forehead. "We'll talk later?" She stood and left me sitting on the bed.
My parents were never going to buy the up and left story. Mom may have been a home maker but she was a professional at sniffing information out. Dad was retired from the Fork's police department and they had moved down here about five years ago when I was a Junior in college. Mom had been so happy and dad had sold the house. This was home base for me now.
I layed back on the covers and closed my eyes. I could hear my parents whispers between the walls of the house and dad constantly sighing. I'm surprised he had any hair left with as much as he ran his hand through his hair.
It reminded me of Edward doing just that in the limo last night. And me tugging on his hair. I rolled over on my stomach and screamed into a pillow.
Edward Cullen. Edward Cullen had something about him that pulled me to him sort of like how a lamb goes to the lion. He sent shivers throughout me and I didn't know if they were good or bad. He carried a gun. A very large gun. He was dominating and forceful. He was a man who got what he wanted.
A knock on my door interrupted me from my thoughts and I sat up.
My dad poked his head in and walked towards a chair that sat in the corner.
"Bella, you can tell me anything, you know that right?"
I shrugged. "Yeah. Of course."
He gave me a scrutinizing look. "Bells, yours not the type of girl to just up and leave. Now I know that Jacob character you were with was not my top pick for you, and I think that you need to know about him."
"Dad, this isn't about Jacob!" I grumbled and put my face in a pillow.
"Did you know his company has been looked into for suspicions of dealing with the Seattle crime syndicate?"
"Dad! You promised no crazy background checks!"
"I didn't do a background check and it's public information, Bella. How could you not know? You're smart Bella."
I shook my head. "Dad, I just didn't care to ask questions. After the shit that happened with Jane I just closed myself off. You know that."
"Your sister died ten years ago, Bella. You can't just close yourself off because of that. It hurts your mother and I everyday but we don't bury ourselves under it."
"What? You think I'm avoiding her death? Dad, I feel it everyday. It squeezes my heart everyday to know that some gangster on the fucking streets decided to kill her! But I just...I don't know dad. Jacob he...he gave me stability."
My dad narrowed his eyes. "Stability? You call slapping you around stability?"
I snapped my eyes towards him. "I may be retired but don't think I don't have eyes on you, Isabella Marie. This is the first time in three damn years you come to visit and you have a damn bruise on your cheek?
What, did you think I was stupid? Jesus, Bella, you could have come home when it got bad! That first time he hit you...God, I could just..." My dad clenched his fists and looked down.
"Are you disappointed in me, dad?" I whispered. Charlie's eyes snapped up.
"Baby, I could be anything but. I just don't like some of the male decisions you made to be in company with." He walked over and rubbed my shoulder.
"How long are you staying?" He asked.
I shrugged. "I don't know dad. I mean, I don't have anything back there. All my college stuff is packed away in the garage. I mean, I do know I don't want to go back to Jacob. I can't."
Charlie nodded his head in understanding. "I'll always let you make your own decisions and I'll try not to hover. But Bells, please try not to get caught up with another guy like him, please? It took everything in me not to go kill him. Your mother-"
"I know dad...god." I blew out a long breath and pushed my hand through my hair. "Just...I'm sorry for being a shitty daughter."
My dad chuckled. "Oh, Bells. I'm a shitty dad for not coming up the first time I heard about him hitting you."
"How did you find out? I never saw anyone watching me?"
He scratched his head. "That's the point of it, isn't it? Now, come on, your mom has dinner going and if I smelled it right, it was fajita's?"
I licked my lips and got off the bed. Maybe Jacksonville would be a fresh new start for me
