Prompt – Shattered Sight angst.

It took a while for Regina to register what had happened. Last she remembered she had sealed herself in her vault hoping it would be enough to hold her while the curse was active. One half hearted scan of her surroundings told her it hadn't been enough. She knew because she certainly wasn't in her vault, she was laying on the ground on the streets outside Granny's with a confused looking Snow looming over her. She also knew because of the clothes she was wearing, leather pants and a corset with an elaborate looking coat over it, definitely not her style these days.

"Corset." she grimaced to herself. So that was the source of the painful pinch she felt to her ribs, it had been a while since she had worn a corset but she couldn't remember it being this uncomfortable, her ribs were starting to feel like they were on fire.

She looked up again at Snow about to ask her what had happened, if she was ok and if she was hurt by Regina during the curse when a glint of something in her step daughters shaking hand caught her attention.

A long shard of glass, which was tipped in red.

Blood.

As if her body had finally caught up with her brain the pain in her ribs intensified and she gasped, biting her lip to stop crying out. She looked around at her surroundings to see the towns folk milling around all wearing equally confused expressions as Snow's as they looked at the makeshift weapons in their hands they had no recollection of having need for. Through her foggy brain she registered that the curse must have lifted.

Looking back at the shard of glass in Snow's hand she had a good idea where the pain had come from. She almost let out a hysterical laugh at the irony. For years, she and Snow had made complex and elaborate plans to take each other down and in the end all it took was a piece of glass. To confirm her suspicions she lifted one heavy hand to her lace covered stomach and felt that it was soaked with red, sticky liquid.

It looked like Snow didn't share her amusement though and she watched as her step daughter looked from Regina to the glass in her hand before stopping to focus on Regina's red stained hand over her stomach. Horror clouded Snow's features as she lifted a hand to cover her mouth as the glass slipped from her hand, smashing on the pavement.

Through her foggy mind and the ringing in her ears Regina vaguely registered a flurry of activity around her, Snow screamed something she didn't hear behind her and was joined by a worried looking David and Emma before she dropped to her knee's beside Regina, her voice frantic and thick with tears as she spoke.

"Oh god, Regina, I'm sorry, I didn't, I don't know what happened. "

Regina coughed lightly and the action made an instant pain shoot through her ribs, making her groan as black spots danced behind her closed eyes. She forced her heavy eyes open and focused on a blurry Snow in front of her, her voice weak as she told her.

"Enough with the amateur dramatics Snow, it wont help you or me right now."

She didn't hear Snow's reply since she became aware of David's presence on her other side placing a cloth on her wound and pressing hard. She hissed as the pressure made her wound burn and for a moment she thought she was going to pass out.

"This look's bad." She heard David say through the ringing in her ears. "Really bad."

She didn't need to hear the word's to know them to be true, she could feel the blood leaving her thick and fast, draining the life out of her.

She was dying.

"Call an ambulance." She heard Emma shout to someone and Regina weakly shook her head at that.

"T- They w- wont get here in t-time." She stuttered out.

She heard Snow let out a sob beside her and knew if she had the energy she would try and comfort her, tell her it was ok and not her fault. She almost laughed at the irony of that too.

She felt a hand on her arm and weakly turned to see Emma's blurry form looming over her.

"Regina, tell us what to do." She pleaded with her.

Regina knew at this point there was very little that could be done, she would try and heel herself but she knew she was too weak and even trying would likely finish her off quicker and she needed what little time she had left. She heard Emma's words and one person came to mind, and it was not Henry. She didn't want her son to see her like this, she knew nobody should have to watch their parent die. That left one person, the only person she wanted in her last moments. Her voice was weak as she rasped out hoping they would understand her, she could barely hear her own words through the ringing in her ears.

"R- Robin, I w-want Robin."

"REGINA!"

She almost cried in relief as she heard his voice, booming through the streets. She thanked whatever higher power that had granted her this small favour of bringing him to her side just when she asked for him. It's going to be ok now, if she was to die at least it would be with him by her side.

Emma must have moved from her side because the next thing she knew he was there and she felt his hand run over her sweaty forehead and down her cheek. She weakly tried to turn into his touch before blinking her eyes until he came into focus.

He was here, her Robin was here with her. Her mind screamed at her as she took in his frantic eyes and panicked expression.

"No, no, no, no. God please no." His broken voice rang out clearer to her ears than any other sound had and she reached out blindly to grab his hand, she was hoping to squeeze it but she had no idea if she would be able to.

She lay there as she heard him shoot questions to the others around them as he gently lifted her into his arms. The movement made her cry out as pain shot through her like a lightning bolt but it was worth it because as soon as she was in his arms she felt a sense of calm come over her and the pain lessened. She focused on him and the safety of his arms around her as she vaguely listened to the conversation going on around her.

Snow was frantically apologising to him as she tried to explain what had happened, he ignored her completely to speak to David and Emma.

"She needs help, why haven't you taken her to a hospital?!"

She had to focus more to hear David's reply, it seemed right then that Robin had become the centre of her universe and everything else around her has dulled into the background. Now she was in his arms breathing became easier. She didn't fool herself that she would be fine, she could still feel the life leaving her.

"She told us they would never get here in time and by the looks of her Robin, I think she is right." David replied.

She felt Robin clutch her tighter and he pressed more firmly on the cloth over her stomach he had taken from David, as if he was trying to hold the life within her. She could no longer feel the pain in her ribs, it had numbed. She knew that it wasn't a good sign.

"Emma, your magic." She heard him beg in a broken voice.

She didn't hear Emma's reply but she didn't need to. Emma wasn't strong enough to pull off a healing spell to this extent and even if she was, Regina hadn't covered that in her lessons.

She heard Robin growl in frustration and she tried again to squeeze his hand to comfort him as his hand stroked soothingly through her hair. She felt that. She couldn't feel anything but she felt that and his arms around her.

"Find The Dark One." He shouted to the others around them. "I'll give him anything he wants, make whatever deal he wants as long as he saves her."

She took a harsh breath in as she heard what he was willing to do for her, make a deal with a man he loathed if it meant saving her. She breathed harshly and Robin gently leant down to brush his lips to her forehead believing her change in breathing was due to her being in pain. That wasn't it. It was of the unfairness of the situation, she had waited her whole life to have someone love her like he did and just as she had found him this had to happen. She wouldn't let him do this, enslave himself to Gold when it was unlikely to make a difference, they would never find him in time and she doubted even Gold was strong enough to save her this time.

"R- Robin." She stuttered out. "It's t-too late."

He cupped her chin gently in his hand and made her glassy eyes focus on his heartbroken ones. He tried to make his voice sound firm but she heard the crack in it.

"No, You don't get to give up on me Regina. You are the strongest person I know and you have to fight. Fight for me, for Roland and for Henry, don't leave us."

His last words were whispered and pain filled and she let out a sob, not for her own fate but because she didn't want to leave him. She didn't want to leave any of them. She weakly lifted her heavy hand so she could stroke his cheek and choked out another sob when she felt wetness under her fingers.

"R-Robin I don't have m-much time left so I n-need you to listen t-to me."

He let out a sob of his own and frantically shook his head in denial as he threaded his hand in her hair, but he let her continue.

"Y-you have g-given me more love in t-the time I have k-known you, than I have felt m-my whole life."

"Regina, please, stay with me." He sobbed out but she just shushed him softly before continuing.

"I never t-thought I could b-be as h-happy as y-you made me. So t-t-thank you."

"I love you." He whispered to her in a broken whisper.

"I lo..."

Her voice trailed off as she began to cough, struggling to get her breath. She could feel the life leaving her and her vision tunnelled so she could only see him as he leaned forwards. The last thing she felt before she was pulled under was his lips against hers and his tears dropping on her cheeks.

...

A bright white light startled Regina into consciousness and she gasped as her lungs filled with air. The first thing she noticed was that the pain was gone, the burning that she had felt in her ribs had faded to nothing like it has never been there.

The second thing she noticed were his arms still wrapped around her, as he whispered her name over and over in her ear, gently rocking her back and forth.

"What happened?" She croaked at him. She was so confused, she was meant to be dead yet she was still here in his arms.

"I don't know sweetheart." He whispered back. "I thought I lost you. God baby I thought you were gone but then it was like there was a flash of lightning and you woke up in my arms and you're fine Regina, your wound, it's not bleeding anymore and you're fine."

"I don't understand." She said in confusion as her hand gripped his bicep.

They were drawn out of their little conversation by David's voice.

"True loves kiss. The most powerful magic of all."

She absorbed the words with a frown.

"True loves kiss is powerful magic but I was pretty much dead, even it can't fix that kind of damage."

It was Snow's turn to speak. She regarded her stepdaughter as she spoke, her voice strained by her left over tears, though now she was smiling in relief as she looked at Regina.

"But you're not just true loves Regina you're soulmates. I'm no expert but surely both of those together make for even stronger magic."

She pondered Snow's words with disbelief. She knew she loved Robin with all she was and knew he loved her back just as much. Even when he had left her out of his obligation to his wife she felt his love for her every time she saw him, every time he looked at her. Just because they weren't together didn't make her believe it less. Was it strong enough to combat death though, was that possible?

She was brought out of her thoughts by the sound of Robin's ragged breathing and she glanced over at him. She frowned in concern as she saw the frantic look on his face and his haunted eyes as he carefully ran his hands over her stomach and ribs to assure she was indeed fully healed and out of danger. She sat up, stopping his movements and placed her hand on his chest, over his heart and felt the rapid beat under her fingertips. He reached for her frantically as though she was about to disappear and she reached up to stoke his face with the back of her hand.

"It's ok, Robin." She told him gently.

"You were nearly gone." He whispered back with a catch in his voice.

She moved her hand down to grasp his chin with her thumb and forefinger, making him look into her eyes before telling him firmly.

"But I'm not, here feel."

She grabbed his hand and placed it over over her heart so he could feel the steady thrum under his fingertips.

"Feel that?" She whispered just for him even though they were still surrounded by people. "I'm here and I'm not going anywhere if I can help it."

He let out a desperate sign of relief as reached for her, cradling her to him like she was made of glass and burying his nose in her hair as if he was trying to absorb her.

"I love you." He whispered against her hair.

Regina leaned back to smile at him gently with tears in her eyes, a chocked laugh escaping her mouth.

"Well the kiss that brought me back from the brink of death proved that. Do I even need to tell you that I love you too?" She whispered to him while dropping her forehead against his.

His eyes were full of wonder as he looked adoringly at her, carding his fingers through her hair. He hasn't stopped touching her since she had woke, like he was trying to assure himself she was really here. He smiled gently at her before pleading with her.

"Tell me anyway, please."

She returned his smile and gazed deep into his eyes to assure he saw the truth of her words in them.

"I love you." She whispered.

His answer was to crush his lips to hers, breathing even more life into her with his kiss.
