Chapter 7: Omote
"Daddy, Daddy, wake up!"
Yami groaned and rolled over. For the couple of days Juudai had been living with him, he discovered that the kid was a very early riser. Especially when he was excited for something. The time they were going to buy paint was late for Juudai. Cracking one eye open, he turned to grab his mobile phone.
It was five a.m.
"Juudai…." He half whined, half groaned. "School won't start until a couple hours. Let me sleep." He placed his phone back on the nightstand and turned his back to the kid. Juudai huffed and sat on the bed. Yami had forbid him to watch the television early in the morning since kids shows didn't start till seven. He also didn't have many toys at the moment to pass time.
Yami's back was already rising up and down steadily. He assumed his new father had already gone back to sleep. Juudai just sat atop the bed for a couple minutes, bored out of his mind. Then he jumped off the bed and crawled under the blankets. Yami already being half awake, stirred from the movements. Looking behind, he saw that Juudai had crawled under.
Smiling softly, he turned and hugged the boy to him, in hopes to get him to sleep a couple more hours. Juudai snuggled into his father's arms, wrapping his own short arms around the adult. Yami was quick to close his eyes again and fell asleep. Juudai closed his eyes as well. The warmth was nice and it lulled him back to sleep.
A couple hours later, the obnoxious sound blared from Yami's phone, waking him up. He groped the top of the nightstand in search of his phone. When he finally found the piece of technology, he turned around and pressed the snooze button. Looking down, he saw Juudai still sleeping at his side.
"Juudai, wake up." Yami said, yawning and shaking the boy. Juudai mumbled some things and just turned around. Great, now he did want to sleep. "Wake up." Yami said firmer, shaking the boy a little harder.
Juudai groaned and swatted the hand away. Yami smirked and raised an eyebrow. He lifted the boy up, threw him over his shoulder and stood up. Juudai gave a yelp at the rude awakening. "I said to wake up." Yami chuckled as he carried the boy to his own room. Juudai crossed his arms and puffed up his cheeks with a huff.
Once Yami was there, which didn't take too long since the room was across his own room, he gently threw Juudai on top of the bed. Juudai giggled as he bounced before coming to a standstill. A week had passed and Juudai's room was about done. The paint had dried, the furniture had arrived and been assembled, in the week Yami had been able to gather some clothing from here and there and by purchasing new ones, same with the toys lying in Juudai's little toy chest. On the walls were a couple posters of Duel Monsters, the bed sheets were of a figure called the Dark Magician and on it were some stuffed toys of fuzzy brown balls with eyes, wings and little green claws.
"Get dressed, I'll make breakfast." Yami said, leaving the room. He paused at the threshold. "You know where your uniform is, right?" He asked. Juudai nodded and hopped off the bed, darting to his closet. He opened the door and pulled out a hanger with clothing hanging on it. "Good, I'll call you when I'm done."
"Okay." Juudai answered and took the clothing off the hanger. Yami left the room, leaving the kid to dress himself up. Having practically lived alone, the five year old was more than capable of putting on his own clothing. He placed them down on his bed and beamed at his school uniform. Since it was winter, they had long navy pants and a navy shirt with big white buttons and a white collar and white cuffs. With it he got a red colored cap, he was happy, since that was his favorite color. The uniform came with a big navy messenger bag.
After he had put the bag around his shoulder and the cap on his head, he walked into the kitchen, where Yami was busy cooking breakfast. As soon as the man heard the pitter patter of feet, he looked away from the food and to the child.
Juudai was suddenly shy and hid himself behind a dining chair. Yami had a big smile on his face. Even though he was not Juudai's biological father, he still felt the pride well up inside him at seeing his first child in the school uniform for the first time. "You look amazing Juudai, come out from behind the chair." He chuckled.
Juudai slowly shuffled away from the chair, out into the open. Yami grabbed his small hands and twirled him around. Juudai giggled as he was turned around, happy that his daddy liked the uniform. Yami quickly returned to his cooking, before it burned. The laminate squeaked a little as he stepped on some of the planks. The water had damaged the laminate, he was going to fix that later for he did not have time or money now. Almost everything had gone to Juudai's room, clothing and other supplies.
After eating, Juudai being very careful so he didn't spill any on his new uniform, the two set out to the kindergarten. Since Juudai was already five years old, he had only one more year left before he would go to elementary school. They left the house, Yami locking the door before leaving. He would go straight to work after dropping Juudai off. He had spoken with his supervisor and arranged that he had a later time to start, but had to work till later too.
"Let's go." Yami said, holding out his hand. Juudai immediately grabbed it and walked with Yami to the elementary school. It wasn't too far from Yami's apartment, about fifteen minutes walking. Juudai almost skipped the way, he had wanted to go to a public school so badly.
"Excited?" Yami asked with a chuckle as they waited for a green light. Juudai nodded his head with a huge smile. "Yes! The orphanage school wasn't fun. All the kids were mean." His smile turned into a pout as he said this.
"Don't worry. I'm sure the kids will be nice here. If they're not, they will have to deal with me." Yami said, striking a little pose. Remembering he was in public, he straightened up and cleared his throat. Juudai was laughing and bouncing on his feet.
The two were immediately greeted once they stepped on the kindergarten playground. A young woman with short brown hair and sparkling blue eyes greeted them with a smile. "You must be Sennen-san and this must be Juudai." She said, lightly petting the brown hair of the boy. Juudai giggled at the affection.
"That is correct." Yami said. After he said this, the woman grabbed him by the arm and pulled him into the building.
"I have already received the information that Juudai would be coming." She explained as she led them through the hallways. "Juudai has been put into the ladybug class since that was the one with the least amount of students in it at the moment. I am the teacher of that class and I can assure you that everyone is very nice." She told happily. Yami could see that she loved her job. They passed a couple doors, all with vibrant and colorful pictures on them.
They passed the Caterpillar class; which had green caps, the Bumble Bee class; which had yellow caps, the Butterfly class; which had blue caps and finally they came to the Ladybug class, which had red caps. Anzu opened the door for both boys. They took off their shoes at the entrance. Yami got slippers while Juudai walked on his socks for the time being.
They took a seat on the mats on the floor, since the chairs were too small for both Yami and Anzu. She quickly briefed them through what they would teach here and the schedule, when Yami could pick him up, what time they closed. Yami nodded as he listened, while Juudai had a bigger interest in the room. The walls were decorated with grass and ladybugs. There was a corner with all kinds of toys and on one wall the hiragana letters were written.
"Juudai can leave his bag in the shelf over there." Anzu said, pointing at a shelf near the door of the classroom. "Then he can go onto the playground and play till it's time to start class." The three got up. Anzu showed Juudai his own shelf. The boy slid his bag into the shelf. There was already a pair of white shoes ready for him. These shoes were for indoors and the classroom only.
"Alright then Juudai, would you like to go to the playground and meet your new friends?" Anzu asked, holding Juudai's hand.
"Yes!" The boy cheered. They retraced their steps back to the playground. It had gotten a bit busier since they went into the building. Children of all sizes were scattered over the playground, either playing, talking with friends, or with the more younger ones, stood close to their parents. This was not what caught Yami's attention though, it was a certain someone. He smiled and inhaled to call but someone else was ahead of him.
"Yuugi!" Anzu called with a big smile on her face and waved with her arm at the short young man. Yuugi looked up from a miniature him and smiled, waving back. Yami's smile fell immediately. Anzu called Yuugi by his first name?
"Anzu!" he shouted back, taking the miniature Yuugi's hand and walking over to Yami and her. "Hey Yami, surprised to see you here."
"Y-yeah." He stuttered. "It's Juudai's first day here." Yuugi smiled and looked at the little boy who now had a little pout on his lips. Now Yuugi would also be here when his daddy brought him to school.
"I see that Juudai has a red cap. That means he and Omote are in the same class!" He said enthusiastically, gently tugging his miniature self more to the front. The little boy was on the short side like Yuugi was. His and Yuugi's hair were identical, only the little boy had vibrant amethyst tips while Yuugi's were more magenta colored. His yellow bangs were more curvier than jagged. He had a chubby face and big round eyes, his cheeks flushed pink.
"He is a little shy with new people." Yuugi chuckled. Juudai blinked. As if one wasn't enough. "Omote there is a new friend for you to play with." Yuugi said, looking at Juudai, only to see that he was gone. "Where did he go?" Yuugi asked, looking around him.
Yami looked next to him to see that Juudai was indeed gone. Panic took over as he looked around frantically. Anzu put her hand on his arm and pointed to the swing set. Juudai was there talking animatedly with another boy his age. The boy had teal colored hair and was a bit taller than Juudai. Next to them stood a young man, which Yami also recognized.
"Bakura-san?" Yami asked. The man looked from the children to the adults, giving a small smile.
"Good morning Sennen-san." The white haired male replied. Yami recalled that Ryou was married and had a child too. He hadn't known how old the child was so he was a little surprised to see the other here. "I never knew you had a kid." Ryou said after he walked over to the little group of adults.
"Y-yeah… I just got him." Yami said awkwardly. Yuugi involuntarily glared at the white haired newcomer. He was quite good looking and knew Yami. The polite usage of names totally slipped his mind as he felt jealousy welling up in him.
"Ah I see." The man said, looking at the two kids who were now playing on the swing set, the teal haired kid pushing Juudai. "That over there is my son. His name is Johan." Ryou told. "I assume that Juudai is yours?"
Yami nodded. "How did you know?"
Ryou gave a small smirk and shrugged his shoulders. "I haven't seen him around here yet." He simply answered.
"I see." Yami said absentmindedly, eyeing Yuugi and Anzu, who were standing much closer together now. They were whispering and giggling, making Yami jealous. Just what was their relationship? "That is quite an odd name… are you married to a foreigner?" He asked, trying to make conversation to make Yuugi jealous.
Ryou shook his head. "No I am married to a Japanese person. I adopted him from Scandinavia." Ryou told. "A friend of mine there was going to give him up for adoption anyways and asked me if I wanted to take him. After talking it over with my spouse we agreed to take him in."
Yami nodded, glancing at Yuugi and Anzu again. "Yami as much as I would like to stay and chat, I think we should head to work now or else we would be late." Ryou said. Yami nodded, looking at his son, who was now pushing Johan.
"Juudai!" He called to grab the attention of the boy. Juudai looked away from the swing and Johan skidded to a stop, also looking at the man. Yami quickly walked over, a little embarrassed about screaming through the playground. "I'm gonna go to work now okay? You will have to stay over after school is done till I pick you up."
Juudai looked crestfallen. His new father wouldn't leave him here behind… would he? Johan grinned at him, showing of his mouth full of teeth, with two missing. "It's okay Juudai, I will have to wait for my dad too, we can play together." Juudai smiled brightly.
"Okay dad!" He said and hugged the man. Yami quickly hugged him back.
"Play nice." He said after letting go. Juudai nodded and returned his attention to the swing. "Oh and be nice to Omote, Yuugi's little brother." He said before going back to Ryou who was patiently waiting for him and Yuugi and Anzu who had watched the small exchange.
"I have to go now. I trust they are in capable hands, Anzu." Yami said with a smile and nod. Anzu returned the gesture. "See you later Yuugi." He said to the small male, kissing him on the cheek before rushing off with Ryou.
Yuugi had let out a small squeak of surprise at the sudden kiss, even if it was something so innocent. He knew that Yami was very patient with him and rather waited for him to make a move. Anzu had a smirk on her face, lightly nudging him with her elbow. Omote just stared at his big brother in confusion.
Yuugi's cheeks had turned into a bright pink color, as he held his cheek with one hand. "Has someone finally conquered Yuu-Yuu's heart?" Anzu asked suggestively.
"S-shut up!" He snapped halfheartedly, his cheeks heating up even more.
"Yuu… who is that?" Asked the miniature Yuugi, tugging at his brother's sleeve. Yuugi smiled softly, his eyes taking on a dreamy look in them.
"Just a very important friend." He answered with a small sigh. After he said that, the bell rang, indicating that class was about to start for toddlers. Anzu clapped her hands to grab the attention of her students.
"Okay children! Say good bye to your parents! Class will start soon!" She shouted over the playground. It got a little more rowdy with all kids saying goodbye to their mother or father and then running back to the teacher.
Yuugi sank to Omote's level and gingerly kissed the little boy's forehead. "Be nice to everyone okay? I will come pick you up after school." The little boy smiled brightly and nodded.
"Okay Yuu-Yuu! I will miss you!" He said cheerfully. Now that the strange people were gone, he felt more comfortable.
"An-chan!" The boy screamed, jumping into the arms of his teacher.
"Down ˈMote!" She giggled, slightly peeling the little boy off of her. She loved the little boy but she didn't want it to seem like she had favorites. Omote could always glomp her whenever she visited Yuugi at home but not at school.
"S-sorry." The little boy said with a little blush and let go of his teacher.
Yuugi laughed and rubbed soft spikes of his little brother. "Alright then, I will see you later." He said, starting to walk home.
"Bye Yuugi, tell your mom I said hi!" Anzu shouted after him. Yuugi didn't quite hear it. His mind was elsewhere. Specifically, at the image of Yami's retreating form with that other character… his name was Bakura if Yuugi recalled correctly?
Why did he hate this feeling he got when thinking about him?!

Juudai was trembling with excitement. The class had gathered into the classroom he was showed earlier and they sat in a circle on top of soft cushions. Johan sat next to him and smiled encouragingly, while Omote, who sat at his other side sat quietly and glanced at Juudai from time to time.
"Okay class, as you can already see, we have a new student joining us today!" Anzu said enthusiastically. The other little students had already noticed, since they were all staring at Juudai. A new face made them all curious. Johan gave him a small push on the back, smiling brightly. Juudai blushed, looking at Anzu, who was also looking at him encouragingly. Was he supposed to do something?
"You have to stand up and introduce yourself" Johan whispered in his ear. Juudai's mouth formed an 'o' as he understood. He got up to his feet and suddenly felt really shy with all the eyes on him.
"M-my name is Juudai and I'm five years old. I uhm… like to play and the color red." He said, looking at his teacher rather than his classmates. He did notice the eyes still on him and made him feel very uncomfortable. Anzu seemed to notice this too.
"Nice to meet you Juudai-kun! I trust everyone to be nice to Juudai!" Anzu said enthusiastically, clapping with her hands. The other students cheered and clapped along with her, making Juudai feel more at ease. "Okay, first, how about Johan and Omote show Juudai around today?" She suggested. Since the other children hadn't interacted with Juudai yet, they were okay with other people doing that job.
Since no one objected, she appointed the other two boys to teach Juudai about the kindergarten. The lessons started after Anzu told what they would be doing today. With the guidance of mostly Johan, he managed to get through them. Omote was just a little too shy. He stuck to the children he was more comfortable with. Juudai would glance at him from time to time.
He tried to like Omote, but the more he looked at the boy, the more he saw Yuugi. The eyes, the face, the smile, the laugh! What if… what if Omote stole Yami from him too! He clenched his fist from the thought.
"Juudai?" The call of his name snapped him back to reality.
"What is it Johan?" He asked, unclenching his fist. Johan looked at him funny, before smiling brightly and grabbing his wrist.
"Come on! We can play outside now!" He cheered, dragging the brunet boy into the playground, where multiple children were already playing. His eyes stopped on Omote, who was already on the playground, building what appeared to be a sandcastle.
Johan had gone and gotten a ball from the toy shed. They played with it for a while, until Juudai threw it so high it got stuck on some tree branches. This got the attention of the playground, as they were fascinated by how high the ball was and how the kindergarten teachers were getting it out of the tree.
Juudai saw that Omote was oblivious to the crowd and continued building his sand castle. He jogged over to it, before the ball was gotten out of the tree. With a quick glance, he saw that two of the teachers were trying to nudge it to fall with a broom.
The shadow looming over him, made Omote look up from his castle. He gasped as he saw Juudai. "J-Juudai-kun, do you want to play in the sandpit too?" He asked, a little nervous. Juudai said nothing and kicked the sand castle. Being incredibly fragile, it collapsed.
"Stay away from my daddy." As Juudai said this, he didn't see Omote, he saw Yuugi. "And don't tell anyone about this."
Omote looked at the collapsed castle. Juudai quickly kicked some sand into the face of the little boy. The little boy immediately rubbed his eyes, starting to sob as the sand stung his eyes.
"Things will get worse if you tell."

Author Notes: Just imagine Omote being the Yuugi from Season 0. The smaller cuter variant. Omote (表) is how they call the normal Yuugi in Japanese. It actually means the surface/exterior/right side or something along those lines. I didn't want to just give the little brother a random name. I wanted it to be related to Yu-Gi-Oh! Somehow and the best I could come up with is this. I'm pretty happy about this one actually.
Also, don't hate Juudai for this! You'll all see that he has reasons for doing this and it will have a big impact in later chapters.
