The black umbrellas raised to shield their holders from the soft rain, a closed wooden casket sat just next to a hole six feet deep. The box slowly descended into the depths with the help of a few men, including Wasabi and Fred. Hiro approved the head of the grave, "I have something prepared." Hiro fished around in his pocket till he came back with a folded and slightly crumpled paper. He cleared his throat and read aloud. "It has been one week since she left us, one week and life has gone on without her, even though it's painful.
Tonight we don't just bury a girl, we bury one of our own. An ally, friend to all, but more to some." He looked to fred, his slicked back hair falling just over his shoulder, his trembling hand had a white knocked grip on his black umbrella. "She was a great addition to the team, to our lives, no matter how brief. She showed us things about our self we could have never known without her.
But we will meet again, not in this life but the next, she will be waiting for us with open arms. No matter what tragedy strikes we will fight with her face in our minds and her name in our hearts, even if she never could remember her true name, we have our given one. Brains we will miss you, goodbye from our world, we will see you in next."
The group stood in a tight circle, their backs to the world. Honey wore a black knee length dress, Gogo wore a black shirt and a slakes. The guys, who all wore jackets, had their jackets off and held them either in their hands or thrown over an arm. They spoke sweet nothings to each other, trying to keep everybody happy. Eventual Hiro but his jacket back on and excused himself, they let him go without questions. He walked down to the road and stared at the rain soaked concrete. After a while Gogo appeared beside him, "That was nice." Hiro felt she wanted to say more, but she held herself back.
"I guess, i think i could have done better. But that's what i came up with." Hiro rana hand through his gelled hair, barely noticing the difference in how it felt. The hardened gel retaining as much shape as it could.
Gogo looked at him with a quizzical look, "why do you think you that, you did fine? You know what, don't answer that. You did the best you could and she would have loved it." She wrapped her arms around him.
"If you don't mind, i want to be alone. Just for a little while, i have something i need to do alone." He wanted to be alone, but simultaneously enjoyed her company.
She obliged, "ok, i'm going back to the gang." She folded her hands in front of her and walked away. Hiro let out a sigh and walked down the road for a few rows, then abruptly turned and continued walking . He stopped and knelt down in front of a grey headstone, the name Tadashi Hamada etched into the stone.
"Hey bro, still miss you but that's not going to change. Glad you could meet Brains, i hope you like her. It hurts seeing her gone, not as much as you, but still a fair amount. But we got all the bad guys, all for now atleast. There will probably be more, but for now we're good. I don't know what to do anymore, besides keep inventing. But it feels like when i invent things they always come back and blow up in my face. Even the suits blew up in my face, they couldn't even protect us." He took a long pause and a few deep breaths. "Sometimes i wish i would have taken your offer, just stayed there with you and mom and dad. But i just can't leave yet, and i don't want to be here. I'm lost, i'm really lost." Hiro placed a hand on the grave, as if it would somehow help his brother guild him. He ran his thumb along the grooves that spelled out his brothers name.
Hiro didn't know what to do, so he just knelt there feeling the damp stone under his fingers. He was lost, but when there was a bright flash of light from behind him, he was even more lost. He turned his head to see a man standing a row behind him, a carma raised and pointed straight at Hiro. He didn't know what to do, so he just stared at the man. The cameraman pulled out a pad of paper and a pen and begun to write things down, instinctively Hiro rose and cut impatient the head stones. "What's going on sir?" He didn't have very much patients in him.
"I'm with the times, that was a very good shot. I just had to take it, so i take it you're here to bury your friend, is that her grave?" He spoke confidently, like he was about to get an interview he wasn't expecting.
"Don't you people know when to give someone a break?" He could feel the anger bubbling up in his gut, that was a private moment i didn't even want to share with my girlfriend. It was his thing to do alone, to remember his brother. Now with this man stood in front of him like he was doing the world a service.
"I'm sorry, this must still be very traumatic for you. Tell me how close were you two?" His pen flew across the pad, recording Hiros expression, body language and just about everything else.
Hiro was even more lost, never in his life had he met someone so rude, even Krei and Callahan had their decency. "I'm only going to say this once before i turn and walk away. Leave me alone." He did just what he said he would, with a quick turn in the mud he walked through the row of headstones, back up the road and back to his friends. The feeling of anger at the man never leaving him.
Hours later the rain stopped and the gang found themselves in Hiros apartment. Everyone in the living room, a T.V show played in the background. Hiro sat in the reclining chair, his head a few inches from the floor and legs hanging off the headrest. he felt his pulse pounding in his head. The show ended, and somebody turned the channel. "Hiro, why can't you sit like a normal person?" Honey asked, her normal happy cheer in her voice.
"You have know me for years and you really have to ask that?" He countered with his own question. He looked over at the girl who launched the question, she sat with her legs folded over her knees, in the lotus position. "Do you really have room to talk?" Wasabi chuckled, Fred snickered and Gogo ignored all of them, flipping through the channels.
"I'll have you know this is very comfortable, and it's really good for you core and back." She raised her finger, pointing at him.
"Oh, you have got to be kidding me." It was Gogo, her shoulders slumped.
"No really it's-"
"Not that, this." She interrupted, everyone turned to the tv. The channel surfing had stopped on a news broadcast. As per the usual of the past week, Hiros face was plastered to the screen. "Are they ever going to stop showing that? I know you revealed your secret and you're the leader but they don't need to constantly remind everyone in the city."
The camera cut away from the broadcaster and onto a still image, of Hiro kneeling down, his hand resting on Tadashi's grave. Hiro couldn't help the anger that bubbled back up inside of him. He didn't need to look to know all eyes were on him. "Turn it up i want to hear this."
Gogo did what was asked. "Thanks Aiko, i was on sight with at the cemetery today. I also did try to get a few questions out of him but he stormed off in a fit of rage, much like a child not getting what they wanted. Are we really sure we want to leave our security up to a young boy and his rag tag group of friends?" Images of each of the other team member appeared, all in armor, all with faces hidden away behind their visors.
Hiro, not knowing what really to do, righted himself on the chair and searched for the words to make his point. But found nothing, instead letting out an exaggerated noise of frustration and walked up to his room. Upon arriving up the stairs he quickly punched the wall. Shaking off the pain he walked up to the window next to his bed. he heard the sound of footsteps on wood and knew who followed him. "I hate the media. After everything we did no casualties, among civilians anyway, this is what they say about the team." Hiro spoke to the window, not bothering to check the presence he knew was behind him.
He felt Gogos slender arms around his waist, her head falling on his shoulder. "We can't help it or change it. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion."
Hiro went silent for a few moments, simply enjoying Gogos presence as close as she was. "To think after all this, we might be done. We got all the super bad guys, the police can do the rest. Now what do we do?"
"Go back to normal, everyone is getting jobs and we can actual live normal lives again, well most of us. But i will be with you the whole way, we are a team even if we don't wear suits."
"Thanks, that actually sounds nice after all this, even if ours won't be as perfect as the others." They stood like that for a while, before returning to their friends. Returning to their lives they left behind all those years ago to avenge Tadashi and capture the bad guys.
