Chapter 9
(Jason's POV)
We eventually found his house and Janice knocked on the door. It was a tall man who answered. He wore a brown business suit with kahki pants and brown dress shoes. He had brown graying hair that was combed to the side, and held a clipboard in his hands. He looked down at us and smiled.
"Ah, you must be Jason and Janice. I have something for Professor Elm." He asked us to come inside and I immediately began to look at all the equipment in the house. There wasn't as much as Professor Elm's but it still looked high tech. He directed us over to a capsule with a sheet over it. "Now, we all know that Pokemon are capable of laying eggs, and they usually have identifying marks on their shells. However, this one has me stumped."
He took off the sheet and I saw the egg. The egg was completely white in coloration, and had triangles sparsely covering the surface. "At first, I believed it was a Togepi egg. However, I noticed that the triangles were a different color." Janice and I looked at the egg and saw he was right.
Normally, Togepi eggs had blue and red triangles, but this one had orange and red. "I believe it might be a new species, so I want you to take it with you and when it hatches, give me a call. Here's my lab number." He wrote the number on a slip of paper and gave it to Janice.
"Uh, Mr. Pokemon, sir?" I asked. "What exactly do you do here?"
"Ah, yes. You could say I am a partner of Professor Elm's, aiding him with new discoveries in our world." He told us some of his recent discoveries, including his research on the Whirl Islands. He talked for a few minutes before the door opened behind us, and a man older than Professor Elm and Mr. Pokemon entered the house.
"Oh, sorry to intrude. I left a few things behind by accident."
Janice seemed to recognize the man, and said, "Professor Oak! I can't believe it, it really is you!"
I recognized the name as well, and asked, "He's the professor from Kanto, right?" Janice nodded excitedly, and the proffesor went over to a desk past the oddly colored egg, which he paid no attention to. The professor began to look through the desk drawers until he pulled out a sketchbook.
"Aha, there it is." After retrieving the sketchbook, he turned to us and said, "So, I heard from Professor Elm that you two are new trainers, Janice and Jason, correct?" We nodded, and he turned to me. "I also heard from Professor Elm that you have a peculiar Cyndaquil with you," he said looking at Typhon, who was now on my shoulder. "Interesting," Oak said, a smile on his face that clearly showed curiosity. "If you don't mind, I would like to test your Cyndaquil to see if Elm's claims were true." I was a bit surprised, someone as old as him who still battled with Pokemon, and looked at Typhon.
"What do you say, Typhon? You up for a battle?"
"Quil!" (You bet!)
"Alright then," I said, a confident grin spreading across my own face, "let's do it!"
(Oak's POV)
We went outside to the front of Mr. Pokemon's house for the battle that was about to begin. It would be a three on three match, and I had four very special Pokemon with me to choose from. Mr. Pokemon refereed the battle, "This will be a three on three match between Jason Gilman of Azalea Town and Professor Samuel Oak from Pallet Town. Trainers, send out your first Pokemon!"
"All I need to use!" Jacob shouted, confidence in his voice like a burning fire. "Get going, Typhon!" His Cyndaquil jumped off his shoulder and onto the field, the flames on his back erupting. I pulled out one of the pokeballs in my lab coat pocket, and tossed it.
"Go, Squirtle!" The pokeball opened and the small water turtle appeared, "Squirtle, squirtle!" Jason pulled out a Pokedex, apparently looking for information on Squirtle.
Jason smirked, and shouted, "Alright Typhon, let's start strong! Eruption!"
His Cyndaquil stood on its hind legs, and I shouted to Squirtle, "Use Bubble!" Squirtle fired a flurry of bubbles just as Jason's Cyndaquil dropped on all four legs and its back erupted in colossal flames, sending out fiery rocks like a volcano! Squirtle's Bubble hit, but Squirtle was unable to dodge the flaming rocks in time. Squirtle was hit several times, and fainted after a few hits. I recalled Squirtle, and Jason cheered for his Pokemon. 'Amazing, just like Elm said, a Cyndaquil with powerful moves. I wonder...'
I picked the next pokeball in my pocket, and tossed it. "Go, Charmander!" The pokeball opened and this time an orange lizard-like Pokemon which stood on its hind legs and had a small flame at the tip of its tail appeared.
"Char, char! Charmander!"
"Charmander, use Metal Claw!" Charmander's claws began to grow and shine with a metallic gleam.
"Typhon, end it quickly!" Jason shouted. "Lava Plume!"
'Another powerful Fire-type move. And after that...' I watched as the Cyndaquil's back erupted in flames again. This time, it arched its back, making the flames spread out towards Charmander. Charmander instinctively tried to dodge, but the flames had it cornered left and right, and Charmander was engulfed by them. Once it died down, Charmander was barely standing, severely weakened by the powerful Fire-type attack. Cyndaquil was preparing for another attack, but I stopped them.
"I am deciding to withdraw Charmander. It's obvious that he can't go on." Jason nodded, and Cyndaquil's back flames went out. I returned Charmander back into its pokeball, and felt for the last two pokeballs in my pocket.
"Let me guess," Jason called out, "the final Pokemon you have is Bulbasaur right? You already sent out Charmander and Squirtle, so it has to be, right?" I smiled, knowing that I actually had another Pokemon with me other than Bulbasaur. This Pokemon I brought out was only used to truly test trainers, and now I thought was the time to use it.
I pulled out a Luxury Ball, a special kind of pokeball, and tossed it without a word. Instead of Bulbasaur, a small, quadropedal, dinosaur-like Pokemon, a Dragonite appeared. Dragonite was a 7 foot tall, mostly orange colored dragon pokemon, with medium sized wings, arms, and legs. Jason and his Cyndaquil now seemed to be terrified, not expecting me to pull out a fully evolved Dragon-type. Then something unexpected happened.
Jason's face went from fear to confidence.
"Alright," Jason said, "now we finally get a real challenge." I was surprised at his change of attitude, I don't think anyone in his position could have the same confidence he does now. His Cyndaquil looked back at him, and they nodded to each other. "Alright Typhon, let's give it our all!" Cyndaquil's back flames erupted into flames again, and I knew this would be an interesting battle.
"Alright, Dragonite use Thunder Wave to paralyze it!" Dragonite roared and shot out a pulse of electricity from its mouth.
"Typhon, dodge and use Flamethrower!" Cyndaquil barely jumped over the Thunder Wave and shot a stream of flames from its mouth. I didn't expect it to do much, but it seemed to take its toll on Dragonite, inflicting a burn as well.
"Dragonite, pin it down with Slam then use Thunder Wave again." Dragonite flew into the air and brought its tail down, barely missing Cyndaquil. Dragonite fired the Thunder Wave and it hit Cyndaquil's back, causing its body to become rigid.
"Typhon, hold on!" Jason dug around in his bag until he pulled something out. He tossed at Cyndaquil and it landed right in front of it.
"A Cheri Berry!" I realized. It reached down and picked up the berry with its mouth, eating it and curing it of its paralysis.
"Okay Typhon now use Flame Wheel!" Cyndaquil rolled itself into a ball and began spinning while its back flames grew larger. "Keep holding it Typhon!" Jason called, Cyndaquil beginning to pick up more and more speed.
"Dragonite use Ice Beam to freeze it in its tracks."
Dragonite shot a beam of ice at Cyndaquil, but Jason shouted, "Add Lava Plume to it!" Cyndaquil's flames began to grow, and the Ice Beam only reached the flames before it turned to mist. "Keep holding it, and add more Lava Plumes and Flamethrowers!" Cyndaquil's Flame Wheel grew and grew with the added power of Lava Plumes and Flamethrowers, and I decided now was the time to end it.
"Dragonite use Hyper Beam!" Dragonite began to charge power, creating an orb of orange colored energy. Jason didn't make any commands, and Dragonite fired its attack.
The moment it fired, I heard Jason shout, "Now!" Jason's Cyndaquil sped forward straight into the Hyper Beam. The flames surrounding it protected it from most of the damage, and Cyndaquil smashed into Dragonite with full force. Dragonite grabbed onto the fiery orb, but couldn't hold it for long as Cyndaquil finally rammed into it's chest and forced it towards a tree. Dragonite howled in pain, and the Cyndaquil stopped the attack, hopping back over to Jason. Dragonite moved back to its original position as well, and I could see both Jason and Cyndaquil panting. I found it unusual for Jason to be panting as well, as it was his Pokemon that was doing the attacks.
"Had enough?" he asked between breaths.
'Jason continues to amaze me,' I thought to myself. I looked over at Dragonite, who was still weak from his burn, 'his Cyndaquil, barely trained at all, can somehow match the power of my Dragonite.' I smiled, and decided the battle was already over.
"Dragonite, stand down." Dragonite looked back at me surprised. "There's no need to continue Dragonite, you're badly hurt and I'd doubt you'd survive another hit." Dragonite shook it's head furiously, not wanting to let this battle end.
"Seems like he wants to continue," Jason said. I looked over at Dragonite, who nodded his head, and I smiled.
"Alright then, let's continue. The next hit should win it." Jason and Typhon looked confident in themselves, and I knew this would be the most exciting battle of my entire life. Well, maybe second compared to that one day.
"All right, Typhon! Flame Wheel with Lava Plume and Flamethrowers!" Cyndaquil began charging the same attack from before again, the flames growing bigger and bigger.
"Dragonite, charge your Hyper Beam!" Dragonite opened it's mouth again, and an orb of orange colored energy formed in its mouth once again. I looked over at Jason, and I could have sworn I saw actual fire in his eyes. His confidence and determination were like a wildfire reflected in his eyes. 'Just like before...'
"Go now!"
"Fire Hyper Beam!"
Cyndaquil charged forward at immense speeds and Dragonite fired his Hyper Beam, causing an explosion that kicked up dust that blocked my field of vision. It was hard to see, but I could still see a light moving around in a circle. The dust cleared away and I saw Dragonite was still standing, and the light was Cyndaquil's Flame Wheel. The Flame Wheel dissipated and Cyndaquil fell to the ground, swirls in its eyes.
"Typhon is no longer able to battle, Dragonite wi-"
At that moment, Dragonite cried out and fell as well. Silence for a moment then, "Dragonite is also unable to battle, the winner is Jason!" Jason ran out onto the field to his Cyndaquil, and pulled something out of his bag.
He held Cyndaquil in his arms and said, "Here Typhon, eat this." He put some type of plant in its mouth and helped it chew. The Cyndaquil swallowed, and almost immediately it sprang up and began to try to spit the plant out. "Sorry Cyndaquil, I guess I should have given you a Revive instead of a Revival Herb." As Jason's Cyndaquil began to yell and point at Jason, possibly about the Revival Herb's bitterness, I returned Dragonite to its pokeball and walked over to Jason.
"That was a tremendous battle," I said, extending a hand out to Jason. He shook it and I continued, "It's quite hard to believe that Cyndaquil managed to pull out for so long, considering Dragonite is a fully evolved Pokemon." Jason smiled and rubbed the back of his head.
"I guess it was just luck. After all, Dragonite did faint by its burn and Cyndaquil fell first." I nodded my head in understanding, and felt around in my pocket.
"Jason, how would you like another addition to your team?" I asked, grasping the three remaining pokeballs in my pocket.
Jason smiled, eagerness in his eye, "Yes sir, I would." I pulled out the pokeballs and tossed them, releasing Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle. I healed Squirtle and Charmander and allowed him to choose one. Jason looked at all three, pulling out a Pokedex and gathering data on them.
Once he was done Jason said, "I think I'll choose Squirtle." I nodded, figuring he'd say that.
"All right, Squirtle," Squirtle looked up at me expectantly, "meet your new Trainer, Jason." Squirtle jumped in the air for joy, clapping its hands. "Squirtle seems happy to go with you," I said to Jason, "it must want to travel with a powerful trainer like you."
Jason rubbed the Squirtle's forehead and said, "Welcome to the team, Blaster." Squirtle, now nicknamed Blaster, cheered at his new nickname.
"Uh, Professor?" Janice said, meekly. I turned to her and noticed she was pushing her index fingers against each other. "I know it might sound rude, but could I..." her sentence trailed off, but I knew what she was trying to say.
"Go ahead," I replied. Janice looked up at me and I nodded to her. She squealed with delight, and immediately went to the Bulbasaur.
"How about you? Do you want to come with me?" Bulbasaur nodded its head wordlessly.
"I should let you know, Bulbasaur is a bit shy."
"It's no problem," Janice replied, "I'm just glad to have a new member of the team." She rubbed Bulbasaur's head and asked about its gender. I replied that it was a female, and she began to think of a nickname. "I know! I'll call you Belle!" Bulbasaur, now called Belle, nuzzled her head into Janice's hands.
"Well, I'd best be off," I said, turning to Mr. Pokemon. "I have to get going soon, I have a radio show in Goldenrod to get to." The three said goodbye and I made my way down the route and towards Violet City. I began to think about Jason and his Cyndaquil, something about that fire in his eyes reminded me of a memory. I remembered another boy who also had a Cyndaquil, and he had that same determination in his eyes. He would even put himself in harms way for the safety of his own Pokemon.
'Maybe I should have said something.'
Alright, I finally updated. It will be a while before Jason reaches Ecruteak, but until then I'll be sure to throw lots of challenges his way.
Jason: I can't believe you're going to end me like this. *Holds up a paper with details about the end.*
*Takes away the paper* Just to make sure you don't spoil anything. So now that that's done, R&R, PM, and see you next time!
