Chapter 6

Voight's Point of View

The water was like ice as it consumed me, but I was determined not to give up. My daughter needed me and I had to save her. So I swam deeper and deeper praying the car would come into view. It felt like and eternity before I saw it, but I did. Adrenaline racing through me I made my way to the passenger side where I had last saw Erin. Thankfully she was still there, unconscious but there.

I pulled as hard as I could at the door and on the second pull I freed it. It swung open and I was able to get to Erin. Getting her seatbelt off was another challenge. It was jammed tight and no matter how hard I pulled it wouldn't come free. Desperately I looked around for something sharp to cut it with. However it was no use and I was forced to return to the surface to get something.

"Al you got a knife?" I yelled as I emerged from the water.

He nodded and tossed me his pocketknife.

"Did you find her? The fire department is here. Severide is getting ready." I heard him call to me as I took a deep breath and swam back to the car.

As I made my way back towards Erin I saw her father was conscious. He was beside her and looked a little out of it. It was a different story when he saw me. He looked pissed, almost like he knew who I was. I hesitantly made my way to Erin's side and started cutting at the belt never taking my eyes off the man. He was struggling to get free but as long as he was trapped Erin was safe.

The belt cut easy and I had her free in seconds. Putting my arm around her and immediately swimming up, it was then I felt him grab me. I tired shaking him off but it was no use. So instead I pushed Erin up and turned my attention to the man. We fought and somehow managed to make it to the surface.

"You should have left us alone!" The man gasped as he took in the much needed air.

"What and let you hurt my daughter? Not a chance. I would never let you ruin her life!" I spat in response.

"Your daughter? She is mine. You all kept her from me. I bet she didn't even know I was still alive!" He hissed as he took a swing for me.

I quickly grabbed his fist and twisted it.

"She didn't even ask about you. I looked out for her, I was at her wedding, and I was there through every bad decision and every good decision she has ever made. You are nothing to her, and I promise you, you will regret ever coming near her!" I assured him as I punched him hard across the face.

Once he was out cold I turned to the others. Severide was in the middle of hoisting Erin out of the water. I swam to the steps and climbed up just as the paramedics rushed to her side.

"Get him out of the water. I want him in the station no later than tonight." I instructed Severide.

"He will need a hospital." Severide replied.

"I know. So the sooner you get him out of the water and there, the sooner I make him pay." I told him.

Severide, who I think still held a torch for Erin nodded and made his way back to the water. Once he was gone I went straight to Erin.

"Please tell me she will be ok?" I asked the hard at work paramedic.

"We have a pulse and she is breathing again." She replied.

"Again?" I whispered as I took in Erin's appearance.

She was pale, had a busted lip and her lips had turned a light blue.

"She stopped breathing but we got her back. We need to go now." The paramedic told me.

"Of course go." I said as I stepped out of their way.

"I will follow." I added.

"You can come if you want. Just hurry." She said offering me a smile.

"Olinksy I'm going…" I began to say but he cut me off.

"Go." He said in understanding.

Within seconds we were speeding towards the hospital.

"Come on kid I told you I didn't want to be in this position again. You promised you wouldn't do this to me…." I whispered to Erin as I took her hand and prayed for her to wake up.

"S-Sorry.." I heard a small voice whisper.

"Erin?" I sniffed as I wiped away tears.

"Are you crying?" She said with a small smile.

"Me? No, you must be dreaming kid." I joked.

She managed a small laugh before she started to cough.

"Erin take it easy." The paramedic scolded as she adjusted her oxygen mask.

Once we arrived at the hospital Erin was whisked off for tests. I found Jay in the waiting room.

"Please tell me some good news?" I sighed as I sat beside him.

"Where's Erin? You better have found her!" Jay questioned.

"I did. She is going for some tests but she was conscious and talking." I told him.

"What about Alex and Bunny?" I asked.

"Alex is good she is sleeping. Her and the baby are doing fine, Chase is in there with her. Bunny on the other hand was rushed to surgery. From what Alex managed to tell me, she took a bullet for her." Jay sighed.

"Bunny got shot?" I gasped.

"Yeah and she saved her granddaughter in doing so." Jay replied.

"Huh, I guess people really can surprise us." I commented.

About an hour later we were allowed into see Erin.

I have never seen Jay move as fast in all my life as he made a B line to her room. By the time I caught up he had his arms around her.

"How you feeling kid?" I asked as Jay clung to her.

"Guys were is Alex, please tell me she is ok. Neal shot her and I don't know if she made it. Everything is a blur, last thing I remember is hearing her hit the ground….is….is she….did she make it?" Erin sobbed.

"What? Oh Erin, Alex wasn't the one who was shot. She is fine Chase is with her. She is resting. Bunny um Bunny on the other hand…" I trailed off.

"My mom?" Erin whispered.

"She is in surgery we don't know anything yet so don't go getting worked up." I assured her.

"Did you find Neal?" Erin asked concerned.

"We did." I replied.

"I want to be there." Jay said suddenly.

"Halstead this is where you need to be. Me and Al have got this." I told him.

"He took my wife, daughter, mother and law and future grandkid hostage. I want to be there when he takes a walk off the pier." Jay stated.

"Wait is that what your planning?" Erin gasped.

"Erin he doesn't deserve anything else. Don't argue with me on this one, I agree with Jay he will walk the pier. Nobody messes with my family." I replied.

"Fine I won't argue." Erin sighed.

"Good then I will let you get some rest. Halstead think you could let her go for a minute?" I laughed.

Jay blushed as he slowly allowed me to give her a hug. However the minute I let her go he was right back in there.

"Ok then get some sleep and I will see you tomorrow. Halstead if you really are up for this, I will see you tonight." I said before leaving them alone…
