Chapter 10
Jay's Point of View
We arrived at the restaurant just behind the kids. Making sure they didn't see us we took the table on the opposite side of the room.
"How are we supposed to hear them?" Erin complained.
"I don't know." I replied as I strained to lip read.
"They look happy at least." I added.
"Oh wait look Alex is doing that hand waving thing!" Erin said as she stared in their direction.
I turned to watch and saw what she was referring to. Alex seemed to be dramatically telling Chase she wasn't ready for marriage. He was nodding and listening until there was a loud banging noise from behind me. All heads turned in our direction, including the kids. Turning around myself to see the cause I was shocked to see Erin on the floor.
"What the hell?" I gasped as I helped her up.
"I tried to get closer and the chair tipped." Erin moaned as she rubbed her butt.
"You're an idiot." I laughed.
Sticking her tongue out in response neither of us saw Alex approaching.
"Explain." She hissed at us.
"Als fancy seeing you here…..your mom and I were just out for lunch." I lied.
She arched her eyebrows and stared at me.
"Fine we wanted to be nosey." I admitted.
"You two are unbelievable!" Alex complained as she sat down beside us.
Chase was looking incredibly nervous as she slid in beside Erin.
"Um how's your butt?" He mumbled.
"My butt is fine Chase thanks for asking." Erin smirked.
"I hope you realise you two owe us a lunch for spying." Alex told us.
"Fine but only if you share what is happening." I replied.
"Deal." Chase answered before Alex could argue.
As so as we ordered our meal the kids launched into their explanations. Turns out they had both been feeling overwhelmed for a while but couldn't admit it. They admitted it was nice to get things of their chests and both of them were happy when I suggested re-evaluating marriage after their baby was born.
"Guess we should have asked your advice a long time ago." Chase sighed.
"Yes you should have, could have saved this." Erin replied.
"Well we know that now." Alex complained.
"Good I'm glad you do." I smiled.
"Were here for all those little problems so make sure you use us." I added.
After lunch Alex and Chase decided to head to the cinema while Erin and myself headed home to get to Jay J. We didn't expect the phone call we received the minute we walked in the door.
"Hello?" Erin said answering the call.
"Erin it's Hank, we need you and Jay at the hospital right now." He said over speakerphone.
"Why Hank?" I questioned.
"Halstead save the questions just get here." Voight replied.
"Be there in 5." I said as Erin hung up.
"What do you think is wrong?" I asked, as we got ready to leave.
"Beats me." Erin shrugged.
"Mom, think you can watch Jay J for another bit, something work related came up." Erin asked Bunny who was making her dinner.
"Of course I can, I love watching my little grandson. Everything ok?" Bunny replied.
"Yeah think so we shouldn't be long." Erin assured her.
How wrong she was.
Arriving at the hospital I was surprised to see the whole unit waiting on us.
"Guys what's up?" I questioned.
"Chase and Alex were involved in a shooting at the cinema." Voight told us.
"Oh god!" Erin gasped.
"Are they ok?" I cried.
"Chase is in surgery, Alex is fine but um….." Voight trailed off.
"But um what?" I pressed.
"She lost the baby Halstead…." Voight sighed.
"What?" Erin whispered.
"Hank where is my daughter?" She pleaded.
"In here." Voight replied as he showed us her room.
Opening it slowly to see if she was asleep I was shocked to see her sitting wide-awake and staring at the wall.
"Alex?" Erin whispered as she walked closer.
"You ok?"…
Until next time ;-)
