Chapter 11

Erin's Point of View

"Alex, honey?" I tried again as I walked closer.

She hadn't even turned to look at me. I looked behind me to see if Jay had followed but he clearly got that we needed a moment. I saw him close the door quietly behind himself.

"He shot at us." Alex mumbled as I approached.

"Als are you ok?" I begged.

"He just pulled out a gun and shot." She continued.

She was sheet white and didn't even seem to be blinking. I reached over and gently turned her head so she had to look at me. As I did her eyes filled with tears and she flung herself at me. I climbed onto the bed just in time to catch her, once I had her in my arms I held her and allowed her to cry.

It seemed to go on forever but eventually she stopped, and gradually became still. I pulled her hair back from her face to make sure she was ok. Her eyes were closed and she seemed to have cried herself to sleep. I didn't attempt to move, I just sat holding her. Jay slowly opened the door after about and hour. I could see the concern written all over his face as I waved him in.

"How is she?" He whispered.

"She hasn't spoken since I've been here. She just cried and cried until she fell asleep." I sighed.

"Poor kid." Jay mumbled as he reached over and carefully pushed her hair from her face.

"Any word on Chase?" I asked.

"Yeah he is out of surgery. They think he will be ok." Jay told me.

"Well that's something." I smiled weakly.

Well became silent after that, not wanting to disturb Alex. However her sleep was short lived as she jumped awake about half an hour later. She began hyperventilating as she looked around the room.

"Hey, hey its ok!" I assured her.

She gradually began to calm down as I placed my hands on her shoulders.

"Mom, Chase got shot and I-I-I lost the baby!" Alex sobbed.

This time Jay stepped in. He wrapped his arms around Alex and held her tight. I could hear him whispering something in her ear but didn't quite catch it but whatever he said seemed to work as Alex slowly stopped crying.

"How about something to eat?" Jay suggested as he released her.

"I'm not really hungry." Alex mumbled.

"Ok let me rephrased that….kid you got to eat so either tell me what you want or I will pick something and you know what I pick." Jay smirked.

Much to my surprise this earned a small smile and a small laugh.

"Fine how about a sandwich?" Alex replied.

"With?" Jay pressed.

"Salad?" Alex said.

"Coming up." Jay said as he winked at Alex and headed out.

"I don't know how he does that." Alex remarked once Jay was gone.

"Me neither." I replied in amazement.

I had been in with Alex for over and hour and hadn't really gotten anything out of her. A half and hour with Jay earned a smile, laugh and she was willing to eat.

"Guess you're a daddy's girl." I said pretending to huff.

"Guess so." Alex sighed.

A short silence fell before Alex spoke again.

"Is Chase really ok?" She asked hesitantly.

"Yeah he is out of surgery, doctor thinks he will be ok." I assured her.

"Good." Alex mumbled.

"Alex what happened?" I asked hesitantly.

"In the cinema?" She replied.

I nodded in response.

"Crazy guy with a gun started shooting people. He aimed at me but Chase shoved me to the ground. Next thing I knew he was laying beside me bleeding." Alex told me as the tears threatened to return.

"You know what happened isn't your fault right?" I asked.

"Doesn't seem like it." Alex complained.

"What do you mean?" I questioned.

"Mom don't…" Alex whispered.

"Alex if you're talking about what happened with the baby that isn't your fault. There is nothing you could have done!" I cried.

"Mom!" Alex yelled as her eyes filled up.

"No Alex I need you to listen, blaming yourself for what happened will not do you any good. What happened was awful and it will take time to accept but it isn't your fault!" I said.

"Doesn't seem that way." Alex sighed…..

Until next time ;-)
