AN: Thanks everyone for the reviews. I apologize that it took a couple weeks to get this chapter posted; but I did update one of my other stories so at least I accomplished that instead. Oh and I have to mention that I spent quite a few hours on this chapter just EDITING! It should hopefully show in certain parts of the chapter with the caliber of description raising a notch from previous chapters. I really hope I did a good job, because it made a HUGE difference from the first to final drafts.
"Well today was a fucking nightmare," Kagome said to the handsome man leaning in her kitchen doorway, watching her wash the dishes. They had just finished dinner and their son was in the bathroom taking a shower.
"Hn," he nodded with a smirk on his face. "It was mildly entertaining."
"Entertaining?" Kagome looked up from the sink to raise an eyebrow at him. "You barely spoke to me for two hours after we left the beach. That's not mentioning the traumatic experience we had leaving the beach."
"It was not traumatic." Sesshomaru suppressed a chuckle at her concern. "Those men were all talk. They didn't lay a finger on me."
"Whatever." Kagome rolled her eyes. "Even so, Kenichi falling off the monkey bars and landing on a rock, scuffing his knee badly sucked. Then he cried because he was in pain and we had to leave the park. Making spaghetti and meatballs for dinner was a bad choice since Kenichi made a mess with the sauce and then he got it on my white dress."
Sesshomaru stared at her as she went on with her rant. She was scrubbing the dishes with more force than what was necessary, probably taking her frustrations out on them.
"The maintenance man still hasn't fixed the building's washing machine so it's not like I'll be able to clean it in time before the stain sets in…" she sighed. "Oh, and the temper tantrum Kenichi threw about showering was great for the headache from everything else."
Sesshomaru shook his head at the high strung woman.
"You need a break." He told her, walking up and patting her on the back. He felt sorry for the woman; she was having a melt down over a bad day. "Lucky for you I am here."
They didn't hear the sound of feet walking up to them as Sesshomaru continued speaking.
"I will take Kenichi for the night, you try to relax."
Kenichi heard his parent's plan for him and he was not happy with it. "What? No," he pouted, deciding to making his presence known.
The objection from a small voice caused the adults to turn and look at their nude son with his arms crossed over his chest, ready to throw a tantrum. Kagome let out a breath and here she thought his terrible two's were over and things would get easier.
"Kenichi," she scolded, "what did I tell you about walking around naked? You're lucky it's just your dad and I here or you'd be in trouble."
The child scrunched up his nose at her chiding. He ran back to the bathroom and grabbed his towel, wrapping himself in it before running back to his parents.
"Now," he said, "you're not coming with me tonight, Mommy?"
"No, this is time for you to spend with your dad," she explained. Sesshomaru was nodding in agreement.
"Please mommy." Kenichi pouted. He wasn't ready to spend a night without her.
"No, honey, I'm sorry."
Kenichi realized that she was serious. He didn't want to leave her here. So he turned to his dad instead.
"Stay here tonight."
"I can't Kenichi." Sesshomaru said. "I already did last night. I have nothing packed to stay here. We are going to my place tonight."
The young boy sighed, defeated. "Okay."
Kagome was reading a steamy romance novel and drinking her favorite wine when her phone started to buzz on her lap.
"Hm?" She picked it up, reading the caller ID. It was Sesshomaru. Kagome took a large 'sip' of her wine as she swiped to answer.
"Hello?"
"Kagome, I'd appreciate it if you stayed the night." Sesshomaru sounded irritated.
"What's wrong?" She asked warily.
"Has he ever spent a night away from home before?"
"Um…" Kagome thought about it for a second before answering. "No."
"That doesn't surprise me. He is obviously uncomfortable and keeps asking for you."
"Oh, I'm sorry." Apparently Kenichi was too much of a momma's boy.
"If you could come over tonight I believe it would show him that it's safe here. Then tomorrow night he could adjust easier without your presence."
"I get it," she agreed. It would be like weaning the boy off of her. A night in a new house and without his mom was a big change for the boy. They needed to take baby steps with him. "I still don't have a car yet…" she trailed off. It would be such a hassle for Sesshomaru to come back and pick her up.
"Hn." A frustrated exhale was heard. "We need to look into that. I will call a cab and I will pay him when you get here."
"Alright," Kagome frowned, closing the book and standing to start packing an overnight bag. "I'll be there soon."
He hung up on her.
Kagome glared as she heard the call end. It drove her crazy at his lack of manners.
"Can't you ever say bye!?" She yelled out, glaring at the phone. She downed the strong wine and frowned, her night was getting so much better too. "Oh well."
Kagome packed her things and locked up the apartment to wait for the taxi in the lobby. She did not have to wait very long before the car pulled up. Traffic was sparse so they made it to the Takahashi residence in no time. Kagome had sent a text to Sesshomaru when she was a couple blocks away. So he had been waiting outside for her, ready to pay the driver. Kenichi was right behind him and ran into his moms arms when she exited the cab.
"Kenichi," she bent down on a knee to meet his eyes. "I am not here to reinforce your behavior if you were being difficult just to get me here. I only came tonight to help you adjust to sleeping here when your dad is in town. Tomorrow you will be staying here with your dad and him alone. Do you understand?"
"Yes," he nodded with a frown.
"Good," she gave a curt nod and stood up, walking towards the front door where Sesshomaru stood waiting for them.
They all walked in the house and Sesshomaru led Kagome to the guest room where she could sleep. She placed her bag on the bed and then left the room.
The guys had gone to the kitchen to get ice cream for Kenichi. Kagome had brought the book she was reading earlier, hoping to read a few chapters; if she could read fast enough she would read the whole book. Something caught her eye as she made herself comfortable on the sofa.
Sapphire orbs widened and she immediately stood up. She made a beeline towards a wall that was full of family pictures.
"Oh wow," she whispered. A small smile spread as she carefully touched the frame with her fingers, as if to see if it was real.
"What are you looking at, Mommy?"
Kagome quickly turned around to look at her son. He was in his pajamas and carrying a bowl full of ice cream, chocolate, and sprinkles. He was the epitome of the word cute. Warmth spread through her chest at the sight, she loved him so much.
"Come look," she held her hand out to him. Sesshomaru took the bowl from Kenichi and both men moved forward to see what she was looking at.
Kagome lifted the child into her arms so that he could see the picture. Sesshomaru stood next to her and smiled when he realized what she had discovered.
Kagome then pointed towards the large frame. It was a collage; the theme was Inuyasha's high school graduation. One image in particular was the object of everyone's attention.
"Mom, that's you!" Kenichi pointed at the younger version of his mother.
"It is." Kagome nodded. "Your uncle and I graduated from school together. We used to be very good friends." Then she turned her attention to Sesshomaru. "I never knew your parents had a picture with me in it, especially not one hanging up."
"Really?" Sesshomaru tilted his head and took a few steps to the left. "There is another right here." He nodded towards a different frame that was set on a nice table. The table displayed an array of memories over the years and most of the frames had a unique way of standing out amongst the others.
Kagome walked over, carrying their son. Her eyes roamed over the Takahashi family's cherished moments of time. Inside of an ornate silver frame was a 5x7 of Kagome and Inuyasha at their senior prom.
"Oh my gosh," she gasped, disbelievingly. "I haven't seen this picture in years." It was a bittersweet feeling. Her copies of this print were left behind at her mom's house, presumably in a box in the attic. It was odd to see her old self. She gingerly picked up the frame with the hand that wasn't holding onto her son, and examined it further. The girl standing next to Inuyasha; it was her, but it wasn't her. She was a completely different person back then. Convinced she was in love with her best friend, had thought strippers were as dishonorable as prostitutes, she wouldn't have believed it if someone would've told her she'd be a mom within a year from that night by giving birth prematurely. Even more inconceivable was that the child would be from Sesshomaru.
She was distracted from her wandering mind at the sound of said child's voice.
"Where are you and daddy?" Kenichi innocently asked. He enjoyed seeing this young version of his mother, he wanted to see more.
"We… don't have any." Kagome frowned at the realization. It is said that a picture is worth a thousand words and unfortunately they all would tell the same story: Inuyasha and Kagome were best of friends while Kagome and Sesshomaru did not associate. It was painfully obvious that they were practically strangers leading up to their son's conception. So when Kenichi was old enough to put two and two together… her heart dropped.
"Oh," the little boy frowned. His eyes squinted in concentration. "In the phone?"
One side of Kagome's mouth turned up while she answered. "No, not in the phone either."
Kenichi was surprised by her answer. He could not understand why his parents didn't have any pictures together when they were constantly taking them with him. He got an idea and turned to his mother with a smile on his face. "Mommy, take one now. Me, you, and Daddy."
"Uh," Kagome tilted her head. It was a good idea but, "I don't look presentable enough right now." Sesshomaru was picture perfect no matter what, Kenichi was perfectly adorable as always, but she was dressed in comfy clothes. Her hair was thrown up in a messy bun, which looked great, but she wanted more than the comfortable look for their first family photo.
"Nonsense." Sesshomaru turned to her. "You look fine."
Kagome blushed and looked away under her lashes. "Thanks." She still did not want to, though. "Kenichi," she said, faking a frown, "we don't have anyone to take the picture. I don't have my camera with me and my phone doesn't have a timer."
"Selfie!" The boy shouted excitedly, even though he was still being held in her arms. Kagome winced as she felt her ear drums being stabbed by the sheer volume of the boy's voice.
"He knows what a selfie is." Sesshomaru observed aloud, frowning at Kagome. He couldn't stand the entitled teens who were concerned with nothing more than what the world owed them as well as what their social media standing was. His son reminded him of a middle school girl, excited about taking a selfie. Sesshomaru had probably never even used the word in his whole life until now.
"Of course he does." Kagome jutted her chin out, defending her parenting. "What? Is he too hip for you, old man?"
Sesshomaru almost laughed at her insult. Instead he smirked and shook his head. "I am twenty five, in the prime of my youth, young lady," he teased.
Kagome rolled her eyes at his statement. She walked away from him and put Kenichi down. He was growing every day, and her arms felt like jelly from carrying his weight for so long. Her phone was on the sofa and she reached out to pick it up.
"I wanna do it!" Kenichi jumped up to take the phone from her hands. He was unsuccessful as his mother lifted the device out of his reach.
"No, sweetie, I'll do it."
"He can operate your phone?"
"Yeah," Kagome nodded. "He knows how to do a lot of things on it. I learned that the hard way." She frowned at the memory. "He bought himself a game once… That's when I had to put a password on here."
Sesshomaru was impressed at his son's smartphone skills. Sesshomaru was always intelligent, but he couldn't believe his three year old could work a smart phone; especially buying an app. He, himself, had a leapfrog computer as a child as that was the highest technological advancement out for children back then.
"You should watch him play with the tablet you bought." Kagome smiled. "He knows how to work almost all of the apps on it."
Kenichi blushed bashfully from hearing his mother's praise.
In seconds Kagome had the phone's camera ready and she walked over to Sesshomaru with Kenichi following behind.
"Let's take it with all the pictures behind us," she suggested. "It would make a nice background."
Sesshomaru nodded and reached down to lift Kenichi, holding the boy near his right side. Kagome stood on Kenichi's right and she instinctively placed her left hand on Sesshomaru's triceps while stretching her right arm out to hold the camera at a good distance and slant.
Kenichi smiled as Sesshomaru stared at the screen impassively. Kagome rotated the phone back and forth until she found the perfect angle, then she smiled and tilted her head a few degrees towards Kenichi.
She took quite a few shots. Seven to be exact.
Kagome then went to her picture gallery to view the images, swiping left to view each one.
"I like that one!" Kenichi said about the third one.
"Your eyes were closed," Kagome noted with a laugh.
She swiped her finger again to view the others.
Sesshomaru had the same expression in every one of them. At first glance he was lackadaisical, but with further inspection his golden orbs were smoldering with… something; he was a captivating enigma. The looks on Kagome and Kenichi's faces varied. Kenichi had a grin that fluctuated sizes, but in two of them his eyes were closed, another was mid blink. Kagome's expression changed with each and none had the same smile twice.
Kagome let out a frustrated sigh as she accidently brought the next picture in her album onto her screen. It was of Kagome and Koga on another day. They had taken it during a trip to the park. Kenichi had been playing on the jungle gym while the adults sat on a park bench. Koga had told Kagome that she looked too good not to take a picture with him. She had thanked him and figured that she could use it for Koga's contact image in her phone. He told her to take another and moved to kiss her cheek. Koga kissing Kagome was what Sesshomaru was being shown, by accident of course.
"Koga," Kenichi pointed out.
Sesshomaru glared at the screen and within an instant was walking out of the room with Kenichi still in his arms, leaving Kagome standing there by herself and feeling guilty. He was obviously upset from what he saw and Kagome understood why. Whether they were together or not, she didn't want to see pictures of Sesshomaru with anyone he was dating, having sex with, seeing or whatever. It probably bothered him to see who was spending time with Kenichi when he was not around. Not that Koga spent a lot of time with the child, but he had been able to see him a few times when Sesshomaru did not even have the option to unless it was over Skype.
"Sesshomaru!" Kagome called out as she moved to catch up with him.
He ignored her and picked up his pace. He would have continued until Kenichi's voice stopped him.
"Dad my ice cream…" The child's complaint stopped Sesshomaru in his tracks.
He sighed and placed the child down. "Go get it." Then Sesshomaru followed the boy back into the room.
Kagome stood still in her place and waited for Sesshomaru to walk past her before following him from the hallway.
"Sesshomaru," she said his name again. A stern look was on her face at his behavior. Yes, she empathized with him but he didn't need to throw a fit. They needed to communicate. She wanted to apologize and he was acting like she was going to continue making him upset or something.
Much to Kagome's displeasure Sesshomaru kept ignoring her. She stood in the doorway as she watched him turn on the television for their child and put it on an appropriate channel.
Kenichi had a big smile on his face as he ate his treasured dessert and he nodded towards Sesshomaru when his favorite cable channel was put on.
Only when Kenichi seemed to be one hundred percent into the program did Sesshomaru finally look at Kagome.
He sent an icy glare her way, and it chilled her to the bones. If looks could kill…
He then walked past her, and she followed him to the kitchen. They could still have privacy but be near the living room in case Kenichi needed them.
Kagome stood and leaned against the granite counter while waiting for Sesshomaru to calm down. He was currently pacing back and forth and it had her worried. She did not realize how upset he'd be from a mere picture.
After what felt like forever to Kagome, but was really no more than a minute, Sesshomaru stopped pacing and turned to face her. The wild look in his eyes caused her to unconsciously scoot a step away.
"I'm sorry you had to see that." Kagome said in a small voice, her blue orbs were cast downward. "I wouldn't appreciate seeing pictures of other people in your phone either and I should have been more careful when I was going through my gallery." After her apology and explanation she finally took a deep breath and looked up at him. If it was possible, he seemed even more upset now than before. He was looking at her like she'd grown five heads.
Within seconds, his look of shock and disbelief transformed. His eyes narrowed into slits, his nostrils flared, and his mouth turned into a scowl. Kagome would have sworn that he growled before speaking.
"You think I give a fuck," he enunciated each word slowly, "about that picture?" He stalked up to her until he could feel her soft breathing on his body.
"Well," Kagome gulped before answering. "I did." She tried to make herself smaller, or shrink away, but he had her trapped against the counter. "But now I'm not so sure." She looked straight forward as if she could see right through him, not wanting to look him in the eye and feeling foolish and confused as to what she had done. She thought she did something little that he was blowing out of proportion but now she realized that he was upset about something much worse and she had no idea what it was.
"I am going to the gym," he told her in a grated voice. "Wait with Kenichi. When I have calmed down I will return." Sesshomaru turned around and was out of Kagome's sight in an instant.
Kagome placed her hand over her rapidly beating heart and let out the deep breath that she didn't realize she'd been holding in. She was full of anxiety as she made her way over to her child. He was oblivious to her distress as he leaned into her side and they cuddled on the couch. She could just imagine Sesshomaru taking his anger out on the punching bag, thinking of when he beat those guys on the beach so easily. It sent a shiver down her spine that she had made him this angry. She'd never seen him so upset.
AN: I don't own leapfrog. I had one of their computer's as a kid though. It was the coolest and none of my other cousins had it. I still have it at my mom's house in a box; if I showed it to my godson (2.5yrs) he would probably frown and ask for my phone. I also don't own Skype if you didn't know that already. If I did own Skype I would be rich enough to try and by the rights to Inuyasha! Ha. So nope, I own nothing.
I invite you to check out my story What You Do. It's nearly finished so no need to worry about updates since you can read most of it as is. Once that story is complete I will be able to dedicate more time to this story, but I will be starting my fall semester next week and unfortunately writing will come second to schoolwork. So review please, you guys motivate me to do my best with this story.
