AN: First and foremost thank you so much the reviews! I am back in school so writing has lowed on my priority list. I do not have a beta and so please forgive any errors in this chapter. I wrote it, read it, skimmed it and tried to get any typos and whatnot to my best ability. Enjoy :)
By the time Sesshomaru had decided to return, Kenichi was sleeping with his head in Kagome's lap and Kagome was half asleep herself.
"Kagome," he called just loud enough to get her attention but quiet enough to not disturb his son.
She looked up to him, obviously wide awake again, but a little disoriented. After taking a moment to gather her bearings she scooped her sleeping child up and cradled his small body against her chest. He stirred in his sleep, moving into her warmth.
Understanding that their son needed to be put to bed, Sesshomaru nodded curtly to Kagome and he lead the way to the room that was designated for him. He had already gone over it when he arrived with Kenichi, but the boy was asleep and Kagome was unaware which room was chosen.
The adults avoided eye contact with each other as they tucked their son in and took turns kissing him goodnight.
They would leave the door open and the hallway light on so that if Kenichi woke up in the middle of the night, he would have an easier time remembering where he was and finding his way to his parents safely if needed.
Sesshomaru followed Kagome to the room she would be staying in and they both walked in without saying a word. They would be silent until the door was closed and there was little risk of them waking up their child.
Sesshomaru was the one to close the door, and after it clicked shut he stood facing the wood. He took a deep breath but Kagome spoke before he got the chance to start.
"Are you going to tell me what happened earlier?"
Sesshomaru turned around and found her sitting on the edge of the bed with her arms crossed over her chest. He leaned his back against the door and looked at her, finally without glaring.
Kagome quickly realized how much more calm he was than before and found the courage to return his stare. Her head tilted, signaling that she was patiently waiting for his response.
Eventually Sesshomaru spoke, but he found it difficult to make his thoughts form into words that actually made sense.
"I find myself irked that my son likes your boyfriend."
"…" Kagome's head moved forward and her eyes widened. "You're jealous?"
"I am jealous of no one." Sesshomaru felt his blood boil at her accusation. He was never jealous. He was perfect. People were jealous of him, but he envied none. "I have no reason to be jealous of your pathetic boyfriend," he sneered along with the last few words of his sentence.
"First off," Kagome held a finger up, "his name is Koga." Another finger was lifted. "Second, he is not pathetic." Her ring finger joined the other two. "Third," she threw in defensively, "you should be jealous of him because he is amazing."
"Amazing?" Sesshomaru mocked.
"Yeah," she nodded curtly. Her face was red with anger. "He is amazing. He makes me happy and he's great with Kenichi."
Then, for the first time in years, Sesshomaru lost his temper. Kagome stopped her tirade at the loud noise of Sesshomaru punching the door.
The room was silent as Sesshomaru removed his hand to examine it. The expensive wood was cracked and Sesshomaru's hand was already bleeding. It would hurt terribly the next day, but for now his adrenaline would keep him from feeling anything. It was a miracle that he didn't break anything, he should have. He would still suffer for a couple of weeks during training.
Sesshomaru stalked up to Kagome, he looked like he did in the kitchen, but this time worse because now he had blood dripping down his fingers.
"I will never be jealous of your pathetic boyfriend."
Kagome did not say a word in Koga's defense this time. She stayed silent.
"I loathe the fact that this loser," he said referring to Koga, "has so many opportunities to build a relationship with my son when I have to fly across the damn country just to visit him."
Sesshomaru calmed down instantly after his confession and his right arm from the elbow down began to throb. He could feel his heart stop racing as his adrenaline ran out.
Kagome let the words sink in and she realized that Sesshomaru truly was jealous. He was in denial as well. Probably for the first time in his entire life, but he wasn't just mad because of her relationship with Koga. He seemed mad because of Kenichi's affinity with the man. When their son said her boyfriend's name of course he would be upset. Kagome would be insanely jealous about Kenichi getting so excited over seeing a picture of another woman. Sesshomaru could be jealous of Koga because for all he knew, Koga could be in the process of replacing his place in Kenichi's life. She tried to put herself in his shoes, wanting to say something to calm his fears of being replaced and forgotten, of being less important.
"There is no man that Kenichi cares more for than you."
Sesshomaru turned away, uncomfortable with the feelings he was experiencing.
"Maybe," Kagome continued as ideas formed in her head of ways to make things better. "You and Koga should meet."
"Hmph," Sesshomaru found her suggestion ridiculous. The only result of that meeting would be Sesshomaru making sure that Koga stayed away from his son.
"Then you can see it for yourself, Koga is a nice guy, he's good with kids, but Kenichi is your son. He knows this and he isn't going to try to steal your family from you."
Sesshomaru looked at her. He supposed that it would be a good opportunity to make sure that the man knew his place.
"I mean," she stuttered, "not your family but Kenichi and I." Her eyes widened and she hurried to correct herself. "No," she shook her head. "What I meant to say was that he won't try to steal Kenichi... Not that I would ever let him." She started to rush. "I would never let him do that. You will always be Kenichi's dad."
"Enough." Sesshomaru used his left hand to grasp her shoulder. She was tripping over her words and he understood her point. "Schedule a day and time while I am still here for me to meet this Koga."
The reality of his words hit her like a ton of bricks. What had she just done? He threw the biggest fit over Kenichi saying Koga's name, and now she wanted them to meet? 'Oh because that would turn out just lovely.'
"I apologize, Kagome." Sesshomaru looked away, ashamed at his actions. "I have not lost control of myself in many years. I believe it was a really long day for the both of us. My mind must still be leaving the beach." He'd deduced that because he had gotten the taste for a fight earlier his mind was still expecting more. He would spar with Inuyasha to relieve himself from this state but the man was not here. So instead all of the aggression was building up inside of him. It had exploded and he was sorry. "Forgive me."
"You did get a little crazy there," she added in a small voice.
"Hn," Sesshomaru closed his eyes and let out a breath. "I suppose I did."
"Yeah," Kagome nodded in agreement, feeling slightly more confident that the incredible hulk had finally calmed down. "Like, really crazy."
"I understand," he said curtly. He was fully aware at how childish he acted, she did not need to rub it in. "It will not happen again."
Kagome nodded at his words.
Then they stood there, awkwardly. Neither knew how to act next. What would a couple, that isn't really a couple, do after an argument? No kissing and making up because well, they weren't together. And most beings that would anger each other to such points reached today wouldn't continue any type of friendship with each other.
Kagome huffed, uncomfortable with how awkward she felt. "Now what?"
'I suppose we can't pretend this never happened,' Sesshomaru thought morosely. "Hn."
They continued standing near each other before Sesshomaru spoke.
"I think I'll retire now." He began to exit at an exaggerated pace, he didn't want it to look like he was running away.
"Okay," Kagome chirped, still standing, frozen in the same spot. "Goodnight!" she called out as he opened the cracked door.
Sesshomaru gave her a barely there nod. He closed the door gently behind him and as soon as it was shut, he sped walked to his own room.
He was not tired but he needed to clear his mind. How did he come to be so riled up? He was never one to have such a temper. Maybe he'd been spending too much time with Inuyasha lately and his little brother was rubbing off on him. He laid in bed, trying to understand the effect that Kagome had on him. He was so quick to lose his control around her; she was the only person who could do that to him.
It was only fifteen minutes later till Sesshomaru heard a knock on his door. He was wide awake and sat up from his supine position.
"Enter," he called out, expecting to see Kenichi.
The bright light from the hallway burned his retinas as the door opened. The figure stood in his doorway, waiting for further invitation.
"Are you sleeping?" A pretty voice called out. Golden orbs widened instantly when he realized it was Kagome.
"No," he answered. His lips turned downward at the stupid question. He was obviously not asleep. "Come in," he said to her, confused as to why she was in his room. They just had a big fight and were supposed to be going to bed. What on Earth could she want now?
Kagome hurried over to the edge of the bed so he could see her better. The light in his room was still off and she had closed the door most of the way so it was pretty dark and neither of their eyes had yet to adjust.
"Are we okay?" Kagome asked timidly, leaning towards him.
"What?" He didn't understand her question.
"Are we okay," she repeated, sitting down. "Like, I just don't want things to be awkward between us after…" she leaned her head from side to side, thinking of the right words. "Well, after all that." She waved her hand in the air for emphasis.
"Hn," Sesshomaru understood. "Yes, we are okay." He watched her nod, his eyes now adjusted to the darkness. As a man, with fully functioning parts, he was naturally inclined to notice that the beauty before him wore nothing more than a tight tank top and extremely short shorts; short enough to let half of her bottom hang out as she sat next him. The tank top was tiny enough to ride up on her waist and tight enough for him to see the shadows of her nipples against the fabric. He had to swallow the lump in his throat as his hormones began to react to her. Sesshomaru realized where his thoughts were headed and he forced himself to look straight ahead, ripping his eyes away from her enticing body.
"Good." Kagome placed a hand over her chest as a wave of relief washed over her. She let out a breath and looked upwards, thankful that their crazy argument wouldn't have a negative effect on the strange relationship they had.
After taking a moment to herself, Kagome stared at Sesshomaru. She had expected him to express his relief as well, but he refused to look at her. Instead his gaze was fixated elsewhere; a bored expression on his face.
"Okay," she said uncomfortably. "Well I'll let you go back to sleep now. Sorry if I disturbed you." She couldn't help but discern that he was not interested in speaking with her any longer.
"Hn." Sesshomaru finally turned his head but it was to his left while Kagome was on his right.
"Goodnight." She got off the bed and listened carefully for his response as she walked towards his door. She did not notice the way his eyes scanned over her body the second she got up, following her every movement. "You know," Kagome stopped before she stepped out, one hand on the door and the other on door frame. "It's rude to ignore someone when they're talking to you."
"I was not ignoring you," he defended; offended that she would call him rude. If only she knew what she was doing to him, then she would know that he was being respectful.
Kagome rolled her eyes. "Now you answer…" she shook her head and opened the door all the way. As she stepped out he called her name, causing her to look back at him from the hallway. "What?" She asked grumpily. He could ignore her when she was talking but when he had something to say he expected her to listen. What a jerk!
"Am I not a man?" He asked hypothetically. He watched her make a confused expression and she nodded to him before answering.
"Um, yeah?" She stood in the doorway, interested. Where was he going with this?
"Then do not come into my room so scantily dressed again."
Kagome's blushed and looked down to examine her clothes better. She didn't realize how uncovered she was. The room was dark and Kagome could not see Sesshomaru, but could feel his gaze on her. She instantly flashed back to the last time he checked her out in his room. It caused her body to heat up and without thinking she closed quickly closed his door, accidently slamming it.
"Sorry!" she called out before practically running to her room. Neither knew if she apologized for slamming the door, or for basically putting her body on display for him and bringing up memories of their one night together. The embarrassment had her heart pounding against her ribcage.
That night, she dreamt of a man… and it wasn't her boyfriend.
Kagome was woken up the next morning by Sesshomaru's miniature twin. The group of three ate breakfast together and Kagome was pleasantly surprised that it had been made by Sesshomaru. It was a healthy breakfast with eggwhite omelets, various fruits, and toast on whole wheat bread.
Kagome kept her eyes on her plate the whole time. Their meal had been cooked to perfection. 'He just had to be a great cook.' She thought morosely.
The adults focused all of their attention on Kenichi and the boy loved it. Kagome could barely bring herself to look the man in the eye, not after the things she dreamed of him doing to her. Sesshomaru limited his interaction with the young woman; she made it easy by avoiding him as well. He too had been plagued by similar dreams as the ones Kagome had. If she didn't have a boyfriend he would have thrown his resolve out the window and gone to her room to fulfill his and, unknowingly, her fantasies.
After clearing her plate of the amazing food, Kagome said her goodbyes to her son and Sesshomaru as she left. Sesshomaru had been observant enough to call a cab that would pick her up just in time for her to finish eating and saying bye to their child.
Kagome nearly ran into the taxi that was waiting for her. She was eager to put some distance between herself and the man who she needed to get out of her head. Luckily, she had planned to spend time with Koga later. That would help.
Kagome frowned at the phone in her hand. She had just finished telling her son goodnight and once they had hung up, she felt a pang in her chest. The apartment was quiet, as Sango was out of town with Miroku and she was alone, waiting for Koga.
They decided to hang out at her place since she had it all to herself and it would be more convenient for him to just drive over instead of picking her up to go to his house.
Hearing a knock on the door, Kagome quickly hurried over to open it. Not before checking through the peep hole of course. She was surprised to see a dozen pink roses staring back at her. She swung the door open and smiled.
"Hey," she said, grinning.
Koga moved the flowers away for a moment to lean down and steal a kiss. "Hey yourself," he told her, "these are for you." He handed the lovely arrangement over to her.
"Thank you, Koga," she said sincerily. "They're beautiful." She turned to go into the kitchen so she could get a vase with water for them.
"They are okay," he admitted while following her. "You are beautiful."
Kagome stopped in her tracks as her face heated up from his flatter. She couldn't help but have the cheesiest smile at his adorable compliments. "Thank you."
He smirked and tilted his head. He was only being honest. As he watched her go under the sink for a glass vase, he noticed another set of flowers set out on the table.
"Kagome," he frowned, feeling guilty. "If I'd known you liked flowers so much I would have bought you them more often. You don't have to buy your own." He had assumed that she got them herself, seeing as Sango was out of town.
"Huh?" she looked up from the sink before realizing what he was talking about. "Oh!" she exclaimed, "uh, yeah. Sorry." There was no way she'd tell him they were from Sesshomaru. He'd take it the wrong way and she knew it.
After putting the flowers in a good spot, Kagome made her way back to the living room where her boyfriend was standing. He'd been looking through the shelves for a good movie to watch. She waited on the sofa for him after he had picked one and once it started playing he joined her. They cuddled for most of the movie but after halfway through, Kagome decided to talk about the elephant in the room. Well for her at least, he had no idea what she was about to request.
"So Koga," she said to get his attention.
He looked down at her. "Yeah?"
"I was wondering, would it be alright if you met Kenichi's father? I figured he had a right to know who's been around his son."
He didn't answer immediately, pondering on her words instead. Did he want to meet the guy? That was a serious step for his and Kagome's relationship. He realized that he would have to if he wanted to have a future with the woman. Kagome looked nervous to hear his answer; she held her breath until she heard the words.
"Sure."
"Really?" Her eyes lit up. That was so much easier than she had expected. "Thank you, Koga!"
"Yeah." He gave her a cocky grin. "Anything for you, babe." Koga leaned down to capture her lips in his. Their lips meshed together as they made out for a few seconds before Kagome pulled away. She was smiling.
"You're the best!" She meant it when she said it; he was so considerate of her. Always willing to do anything he can to make her happy. He didn't care that she had a kid, or that she used to dance for strange men. He didn't hound her about what she was doing all the time, or give her trouble when she was around Sesshomaru. Never had she met a man who could be so dedicated to her happiness, he put her on a pedestal, and she reveled in it.
It only made her feel that much guiltier when she was unsatisfied that the blue eyed, black haired man kissing her did not have golden orbs and silver tresses.
